My husband, daughter and I went last evening for the first time, combination Mother's day and birthday celebration. We all loved it. The martinis were tasty, food was really very good and generous portions (eggplant rollatini, spinach raviolis, and osso bucco), prices very reasonable, and the wait staff was friendly and attentive. First visit for my wife a I for dinner. Very impressed. Excellent ambiance, open kitchen and flat bread oven on one side and bar on other side with high top tables in the middle. Nicely decorated. We had veal Marsala and eggplant ritoli that were excellent. Generous portions allowed for takeout. The leftovers the next day were still excellent. Would have been 5 stars but food was slow and waiter was inexperienced. We understood one cook was missing. Appreciate that our food quality was not compromised. One of my favorite places on the North Shore! The pizza is phenom and the beer selection is great. But my absolute favorite is the mandarin salad. Tip: the salad is plenty big to split as an appetizer for two. Ask to split the salad and they'll put it on two separate plates which is convenient. 2 great dinners! First, it was very busy night but waitstaff were so great and just communicating and attentive and smiling! Had salmon but with the scallop sides, risotto and fresh asparagus. I miss the sweet potato mash but the risotto was a great replacement with just the right bits of asparagus! Yummy! Salmon was perfect size and perfectly grilled. My husband had chicken parmigiana. He always orders this meal because they always nail it! Do you know how difficult it is to cook chicken parmigiana the same way every time? OTV consistently provides entrees with fresh, quality ingredients. And, isn't that what you are looking for when you dine out? I can't wait to go back! Loved the atmosphere here. Nice and dark, rustic. The staff was attentive and kind when I came in to pick up my takeout. Pricing was quite high, but I knew that going in. The pizza we ordered "Nick's Shrimp and Roasted Garlic" was really, really good. Large shrimp, cooked perfectly. Crispy with lots of topping and flavor. The dinner, however, was not so great. Average size portion of chicken (Chicken Francaise), tiny amount of angel hair. The sauce was "eh". The real problem lied with the way the chicken was cooked. It seemed cooked, but the first problem was that I couldn't cut it with the side of my fork. I attributed it to a tough section, and got a knife. As I chewed it, something seemed off. I cut into the next piece, and realized that it was not cooked. Mind you, this was chicken cutlet, so less than a half inch thick. I ended up microwaving it, and eating it. I didn't get sick or anything, but it was quite a downer for the $38 we spent on these two items. I then went to their website and wrote them a very nice email, explaining what happened, and how I felt about it. I expected at least some sort of acknowledgement or response.. but got nothing. I'm not one to complain at restaurants... I know things aren't always perfect.. And, coming from the restaurant administration world, I know that feedback is very important. I give this five stars because of the staff, atmosphere, and flatbread. The dinner (and the way it was, or wasn't, dealt with, is what brought it down to two stars. It seems that customer complaints are not dealt with well (according to many other reviews here, as well as my own). If you're reading this, Off the Vine, you may want to pay a bit closer attention to emails and comments. These are the things that get around to other people and make them choose a different establishment when contemplating dinner plans. read more

Our FAVORITE restaurant!!!! Everything about this restaurant is right on. The bar is the best in the N. Shore. I would give this place zero stars if possible. We came in with 2 kids and they sat us at a high top table. We asked for a high chair and they told us they were unable to give us one due to a reservation. The server/host was extremely rude. Very unaccommodating for families with small children. This restaurant needs to be called into the Board of Health!!!!! My husband and I were sitting at our table, waiting for our meal, in what seemed like Grand Central Station. It was complete chaos, and I don't see any reason for wait staff to run, in a restaurant! Other than that our meals took :57 minutes to be brought to our table. As I sat there, I looked up at the "open ceiling" concept.... IT WAS DISGUSTING!! How can they possibly be getting away with THAT!! There was literally dust and whatever else hanging off the large vent tubes! Blowing around by the fans. I asked our waitress if the owner was working, or the manager. She told us that "they" were on vacation. Apparently they are married. She also told us that they go on a lot of vacations, 2-3 per month??!! MY SUGGESTION: STAY HOME FROM VACATION, and CLEAN YOUR FILTHY RESTAURANT!! Don't ask your waitstaff be responsible for deep cleaning that restaurants require.... It's not their job, ITS YOURS!! .... Went for the first and LAST time this weekend (Memorial Day). We had a Groupon and use them to check out new places. This place has great potential due to its atmosphere and great looking bar. The staff was pleasant enough, ours seemed to be young/new to the job. The menu offered a variety of items but none seemed to stand out over and above other Italian restaurants. We ordered drinks that were small but tasty. We ordered dinner then it started. There was a loud very obnoxious woman sitting in the corner drinking a martini acting as if she owned the place. Well, it turns out she did. It started with her telling one of her staff she wasn't mad at them (which she obviously was). She then proceeded for an hour to hold what seemed like an employee meeting. She was very upset because she had to sweep her own restaurant. Within minutes each girl had a broom and was sweeping under and near tables with patrons at them (I'm not kidding here). Then the owner decided everyone had to sing Happy Birthday to someone at the far end of the bar. She announced this very loudly and told her employees she would fire them if they didn't sing. Needless to say this was not a great dining atmosphere/experience at all. The food was Ok but not great and the portions were small. Among several regrets one was that we didn't order a pizza - they looked good. We have another Groupon for this place. Gonna give it away with a strong advisory attached. read more

Went there. Wish I could say how it was. Could not get service. Bartender served me a beer then sat with her friends and ate lunch for over 30 minutes. My husband and I visit this restaurant on a regular basis (about once a month, sometimes more). We live nearby and this is our go-to place when we've had a tough week and need to relax and feel taken-care-of on Friday evening. This restaurant is consistently great. I read through some of the other (many poorly-spelled) reviews and was genuinely surprised by some of the negative feedback. The atmosphere at this restaurant is very different than others, but I like that. If I wanted an in-the-box Applebees atmosphere, I would have gone there (yuck!). Their tables are a bit close together, but not unbearable. If you've ever been out to dinner in the North End of Boston, it is certainly not as packed as those places! Their menu is varied with some Italian selections, wonderful salads, good specials, and unique flatbreads... something for everyone. They do not advertise themselves as being a hard-core authentic Italian place, so the comments about their menu not being authentic enough are unwarranted. Some of the staff are young, but they try hard and are very nice and accommodating. I find that if you are a reasonable customer, you'll get better service no matter where you go. I was a service person... I never felt the need to be nice to someone who was a jerk to me. The owners have always been pleasant, often sharing with us what is "up next" in their menu or beer line-up, and go out of their way to recognize and appreciate your business. Most importantly, the food and drink are solid. Just like any restaurant, there are some things on the menu that are better than others. Some of my favorites are the butternut squash ravioli (which is a plate-filling portion, NOT like a previous reviewer who said they got "5 raviolis", that's just a plain lie), my husband and I love their nachos (HUGE portion, with all the fixin's including beef), they have a wonderful homemade spinach/artichoke dip, my husband loves their fried calamari, they also have an impressive osso bucco, very large antipasto plate... and any of their salads are also large and tasty. Their drink selection is wonderful, the owner takes great care to select craft beers that would appeal to a large variety of tastes, and he rotates the draft selection often as well. Mixed drinks are wonderfully balanced and a good value for what you get (rather heavy pour, and no cheap-o booze). Overall, this is not a "cheap" place. If you want to have appetizer, dinner and drinks for under $40, again.... go to Applebees (yuck!). BUT, this place is not expensive, either, and certainly doesn't have the uppity snootiness like many of the other north shore restaurants have. This is a nice, middle-of-the-road place, with pleasant staff, and good food. Ignore the negative reviews and give this place a try for yourself. We have never been disappointed, and frequently bring friends and family here as well, and get nothing but rave reviews from them. read more

Love the fun atmosphere, it's a tad loud BUT I actually really like it because u don't feel like ppl can hear your whole conversations. Not a place id bring the kids since it's mainly high top tables and the bar is a focal point but who cares! Called ahead to ask about timing needed to prepare 15 flatbreads as appetizers for an engagement Party. Pizzas were ready exactly on time and exactly what we expected for cost. Just got home after enjoying a perfect meal here with my sister. She had the eggplant rollatini which she raved about. I had the butternut squash ravioli with a butter and walnut sauce. Perfect! I am shocked their star average isn't higher. This is my favorite restaurant in the area. I've had many meals off their menu, and have always been blown away. The pizzas are delicious and I especially love the spinach artichoke dip. Every time I'm there, the place is packed, and that always makes me happy for them. Been here before so expecting good things. But had a 45 minute wait for a table. Drinks served fairly quickly. Then ordered a few gourmet flat bread pizzas. Waitress said they were backlogged on the pizzas and it would take over 45 minutes for 2 pizzas. We decided to order entrees instead as we were assured it would be out quicker. As soon as we ordered the fire alarm went off. It screeched for 20 minutes. We could not bear it and no one could figure out how to shut it off. It was an excruciating 20 minutes . Needless to say 50 minutes later the meals arrived. We wish we had gone with the pizzas. Eggplant came out with ice cold pasta. Husbands veal parm was good but mothers veal francaise they forgot the sauce. Mother went off on waitress which I did feel bad as it was not her fault. Management offered us free dessert which we declined as we had no intention of staying there any longer. But were shocked when the bill came and there have been no accommodations for the fire alarm or the two errors on the meals. Needless to say I don't feel the urge to rush back. One out of three meals just isn't a good enough number to get me back. read more

Not worth the time or money. Although it only took a minute to get seated, it took probably 5 minutes for the waitress to come back for a drink order, another 5 to get the drinks, another 10 to come back and take our order, and another 15 until we got our food. It wasnt crowded and the place isnt that big, so there was no reason it should have taken so long. And, considering its an italian restaurant, I was disappointed we didnt get free bread because I was starving while we waited for our food. I ordered the angel hair pasta with shrimp, and in the description it said it was tossed with olive oil, fresh basil, garlic... when I got it, I realized it was in a bland white sauce, not olive oil, and there was a few sprinkles of dried parsley, there was no basil to be found. there was a tiny bit of garlic, but barely noticeable. and the portion was small. When I go to a mid-range italian restaurant, I expect enough food for lunch tomorrow. The shrimp I could tell was the pre-cooked frozen kind, and it was chewy with not much flavor. and this was $15.99. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice and cozy though. It would be a really nice place to go with friends after work if you just wanted drinks and an appetizer. But for mid-range italian food, you're better off going to the Bertucci's on 1A in North Beverly where the portions are bigger, the food is tastier and cheaper, you get better service, and fresh baked bread with oil while you wait. read more
