The best in customer service EVER!!! I came to CA to teach an invasive cardiology class for 70 people at Highland hospital and had to get all the binders and printing done. Arriving on a Saturday night I got to the office max 5 min before closing on Easter eve. Ahmad, the store manager pricematched the price for binders I saw on line at staples and even found better prices on their two pack binders. Leroy in the impress print department began printing the first powerpoint and reference cards, dividers, articles .....all when the store was actually closed....these guys stayed and helped get this project started till 10pm. Ahmad helped me find the hilighters, pens, and supplies I needed for the class and recognized how jet lagged I was and provided me with an energy drink to keep going!!! I could have cried when he said they would be close the next day on Easter.....because I was forced to go to Kinko's. No comparison to Ahmad and Leroy....bad attitude, no pricematch on anything, and wow say more expensive. I only had the printing done there at that rip off joint that I had to have for Monday....40 copies of the remaining powerpoints. I came back to get the other 30 copies at Office Max on Wed morning and met Racquel. She worked with me all morning to finish the printing and help me with technical questions re my computer while still providing excellent customer service to all the other customers who came in. Then to top it off, I asked if she would be interested in helping to put the binders together and she agreed to help me that night at the hotel. God bless her she made such fast work of what would have taken me forever and there were done perfectly...I was more than glad to pay her for her time. She helped me clean up and load everything in my car. She also pricematched to procopyand print's advertised prices on their website of $o.29/ color page and $0.05/ B&W page. So the printing was less than half of what I had to pay at Kinko's. I had Racquel make four binders that were all in color and they looked perfect. Sooooo.....If you want to have great service and competitive pricing go see Ahmad, Leroy and Racquel at this Office Max and tell them Char sent you. Bring any coupons or advertized specials from competetiors and they will match it. Whenever I teach again in Northern California....this is where I am having my work done. Today was the final straw. I emailed pdf to store for them to make a poster. Told them I needed it by 3:00 and to let me know if there were questions or problems. Leroy emailed me and said he would print it. I arrived at 4:00 and the poster was not even printed, and Leroy told me the laminating machine was not working. He proceeded to tell me how busy he was. I asked him why he had not called me to say he could not complete the work. I asked to speak to the manager and he was absolutely no help. Sad to say that this was my third bad experience getting posters printed, and Office max has lost my business. read more

This store is alright. I rarely come here since I usually don't need any office supplies but when I do go they usually have everything I'm looking for. I bought a couple things from here 2 or 3 days ago and the employees were really nice and helpful. I would probably shop here again. read more

In this modern age of online shopping convenience, good customer service is all the more important for brick-and-mortar stores. Here, the Officemax in South Shore Shopping Center in Alameda fails completely. They only had 1 person cashiering and the line was super long. I stood around and waited around the area with bookshelves for 30 min, seeing if one of the floor sales staff would come over to ask if I needed assistance. Having previously worked in a retail store a couple of years back, I had been trained that a customer shouldn't have to go and find someone to get some customer services. Floor sales staff should be roaming the store, looking for people who need help, not invisible, hidden and unseen. I didn't see anyone on the sales floor. Only people I saw were the 2 people in the printing department, and the poor person working the check out line as quickly as they could. Where was the store or shift manager? Nowhere to be seen. I was kept waiting for so long, I just gave up and took my business elsewhere. I'd have given them 1 star for the terrible customer service instead of 2, but they do have a good selection of merchanise. If they just improved on customer service they'd be a better store. Which is ironic, because I interviewed for a job there a year and a half ago, and the manager stressed customer service as being a high priority. Guess she was lying, because from my experience today, customer service is really a very low priority for this store. read more

Horrible return policy on our items that have to be assembled. Purchase the desk there when I open the box it came in 1 million pieces half of them are not labeled and the schematics are terrible. I will return and purchase something else. That will be my last ever visit to an OfficeMax. read more

This is your typical Officemax and is normally a 3-star (+/-1) experience on any given day depending on the crew running the floor and/or what items they currently have in stock. After tonight, however, I have to give them a whopping 5-stars for the surprisingly easy time I had with returning a $160 office chair I'd purchased a day after Christmas which was beginning to cause me dull neck pains in just over a week. Though I had the original receipt, packaging box and materials, and even a $30 3-yr service protection plan I'd also purchased initially, I was anxious since you just never know about the fine print; I expected it might be a battle. But to my relief everything couldn't have gone smoother. The cashier (an older woman, "Meg" or something like that) was very helpful; told me to go ahead and get the tag of the chair I did want so she could see if it's in stock, even before I'd brought the returning chair from the car to be inspected! Better still, the new chair I wanted (normally $10 bucks cheaper at $150) happened to be on sale for $50 off since the previous time! 'Meg' asked if I wished to continue the 3-yr plan and I said "sure" which was also lowered due to the sale price of the new chair. When all was said and done, I had a new chair for $100 bucks ( normally priced at $150 with the seat-tilt feature I wanted but the prior chair lacked), PLUS a renewed and cheaper 3-yr service protection plan AND $80 bucks cash given back to my pocket! 'Meg' asked if I needed help out and after thanking her, told her I'd managed; she walked part way to the door and came closer to said, "That protection plan is a great deal, seriously. If your seat cushion goes flat, which it will, just bring it back and you'll get a new one just like that." Maybe it was the good non-busy time I went (off-peak around 730pm) or just happened to catch the right helpful person, but I've got nothing but good things to say about a place that gives me hassle-free returns and puts $80 bucks back in my pocket! read more

I have been living in Alameda for years and have signed up for yelp to quite frankly support this store and there friendly employees. As with any retail store today you will have your young part time employees who are just getting their taste of customer service and how to deliver it. As a lifetime Alameda native, I can attest that we do expect more from our local businesses and this store certainly delivers. As one review read the store is very clean and organized and the staff is always very welcoming. Our Sunday routine includes breakfast at the cafe across the street and a stroll through the store new advertisement in hand. I particularly enjoy browsing their technology section as Alameda really doesn't have a business as such. Their associates are fairly knowledgeable and provide good wholesome advice......and no I am not a self proclaimed techy( as one review claims) but know enough to carry a good conversation. Officemax converted away from rebates unlike their competitor across the freeway and offer instant savings on all weekly ad products. I recently purchased my newest laptop and instantly saved $200 at the register.....Amazing!!!! Myself working in retail for years has proven this type of atmosphere is driven through good leadership. One particular associate by the name of Tony( young guy at that) always greets me when we walk in and always offers to provide me their weekly ad.....I figure buy now he would notice I am there every Sunday with my own ad but nevertheless always enjoy his good morning greeting and overall politeness. Tony is just one of several employees who deliver grade A service....compliments to the person in charge of hiring. I have many friends throughout Alameda and all of them share the same view. Please don't let a couple young self proclaimed techies ruin your views of this place as they are always trying to do their best. read more

REALLY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! The cashier was some mean old chinese lady who didn't greet me, didn't look at me, and simply threw my supplies into a bag, basically saying with her actions, "Just get out of here!!" I was so insulted. Seriously, who wants to be treated like that?? Later, I decided to return something. The lady made me pay like a dollar even though I was returning stuff, so I calmly, politely asked her why. She half yelled something like, "Blahblahblahhh!!!" Dude I don't even know WHAT she said, except that she was hella pissed at me for no reason. So I was like, "I need to talk to the manager here!" and she said, "Wait over there!" she waved me imperiously away, so I stupidly walked over to the other desk and waited. Fortunately, a much nicer woman was there, and she quickly explained the pay-back money situation that I was so confuzzled about. Whew!!! I hope the other old cashier gets fired. read more

We came to refund a planner that I purchased the day before because we bought the same one 40% cheaper at OfficeMax in Emeryville because that store is closing down. However the clerk that do out refund was RUDE!!!!! Her name is IRENE. if she does not like her job she should quit. But I came up to the counter smiled and asked for a refund she snatched the receipt and said "what's the reason?" I told her I didn't need it anymore. She proceed to scan the receipt and then scan the planner then said "sign there" and as I was signing she THREW the planner right on front of me which was an arm reach from her. So I looked at her then sign the pin pad. The. When she was done counting my change. She once again threw the coin change into my hand. No thank you no anything. I work in a hectic place and customer service is key. I know what customer service. I know ppl have bad days but she must've lost her sense of politeness today. I walked away angry. Customer service here sucks! I will never step foot in this store again. I spent at least 20 minutes, wandering around, and not once did any of the several employees I saw stopped to inquire as to whether I needed help. When I checked out, the cashier didn't say one word--no hello, no thank you, no good bye. Time to get to college, I first walked in knowing NOTHING about computers and what electronics i should be using for lectures and dorm life. I walked in and was greeted by a store associate, then someone helped me to find the laptop that perfectly fit my needs. the store associate who helped me, tell me the pros and cons of each laptop and the difference between each processors. The associate helped he find the right laptop and printer that would be the best bang for my buck. Afterwards he offered this protection plan that covers me for 2+ years. Their coverage covers any accidental damage is such a great deal. With that in mind, he said that I get a free battery replacement too. I went home and checked the price for the replacement battery which is around 120 dollars and the protection plan is around the same price so its a STEAL. I love this place alot. the workers know what they are doing and they can take care of you. I highly recommend my friends to this place. plus..they PRICE MATCH. read more

I typically buy all my supplies in San Francisco only cause I have a high end taste for stationary products. FYI be careful you dont go crazy in high end stationary. But I digress I come here when its something simple and the staff is typically nice to me say for a particular person. I dont really need a lot of help I know what I'm doing. Today was really the last straw for me. I duck in to buy a roll of tape to refill my dispenser. Well this particular person always follows me when I walk in. First time she didnt even listen to the words coming out of my mouth and kept saying yea you just check in your bag. Which I have never heard of before. But I do it cause I try to be easy. Anyways today she tells some new guy to bug me while I am trying to buy tape. I see you lady out of the corner of my eye and you following me to the counter. NOT SO SLY! After being harassed from the tape section and having her follow me down the isles pay for my overpriced tape using my Officemax card I leave and decide no I dont need this. Ive already spent over a grand in the last year here If being a regular customer still puts me on the suspicion list maybe Im to suspicious to shop here. read more

Recently I was at Office Depot looking for something and the entire floor was EMPTY of sales people. So I was pleasantly surprised to go to Office Max and have two friendly salespeople on the floor ask me if I needed help finding anything. A lot of the big stores these days have few salespeople on the floor so I appreciated the friendly and helpful staff here who showed me what I was looking for. read more

Once again I forgot why I avoid this OfficeMax location. Their selection is spotty at best. They keep product tags available for items that are not in stock; a fact which you discover at the cashier station. But most important, their customer service is non-existent. I would say don't buy a computer here. I followed the advice of a salesperson, after speaking with him a few times. I bought a Toshiba laptop on sale. It had glitches from the beginning. I was still in the haze of, "oh they will fix that for me". I also had bought the extended warranty. When I took it in to them to fix, it couldn't be done, and they said I needed to buy the super duper repair thing for another $150. This repair still didn't make the computer run like it should, but it was a little better. A few months later I couldn't get it to run any program. Using the super duper online Office max repair, after about 4 hours on my weekend, the guy's result was that I had an embedded virus that meant the hard drive needed to be wiped clean. To top it off the computer didn't come with an operating disc. Office max has not offered any help with it, even though the computer is now about 6 months old. I will never buy anything but basic paper supplies there again! Also, I mistakenly bought an updated phone the same day I bought the computer. The sales person was really good, about saying the phone was upgraded in ways it wasn't! Now I'm stuck in another 2 year contract! read more

Since ODOM has grown larger, I find their customer service deplorable. I called the San Leandro location for information regarding a furniture order and when I was told they do not deliver, do not assemble unless we make an appointment for them to come to me after the item is delivered to my SF office, I was then told, "it's sort of like I need to get across the street, but they won't move the curb for me".
