An excellent coffee in an extremely cute cafe. Plenty of sweet toys/entertainment for kids. Great vibes, very friendly owner.

Excellent chicken salad sandwich on a flaky croissant…read more It was a hot summer day and I was craving something cool and light. I was staying at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Downtown Portsmouth and found Dwntwn Grocer & Cafe just a short two-block walk away. The space is a small, bright market-café with cheeses, salamis, drinks, and a focused food menu. Natural light fills the room through the large windows, and they also offer fresh coffee and lattes. Two young women working the lunch shift were genuinely friendly and made a delicious sandwich. The croissant was outstanding: ***light and flaky*** and the chicken salad itself was refreshing, with grapes and red onion. The only change I requested was leaving off the pickled onions. It was so good I ordered a second one and finished it. I already plan to go back for lunch tomorrow....!

They offer fresh brewed coffee (Blue Harbor Coffee Co), coffee/espresso drinks, chai/tea drinks, baked goods, and made to order breakfast sandwiches. They also stock small grocery items, frozen items, snacks, candy, cold drinks, beer, wine, tobacco items, and essentials. The place is order at the counter or online and there is seating in the front area and along the windows. I stopped by here recently late afternoon. I already had coffee, so all I needed was a breakfast sandwich, which is offered all day. I got a BYO Egg Breakfast Sandwich ($8.75 plus tax) on an Everything Bagel with goat cheese, pickled onions ($), pork sausage patty ($), round egg patty, tomato, & romaine lettuce ($ subbed for spinach), which was prepared to order and ready to go in 6 minutes. I headed back to my vehicle outside and enjoyed this tasty thick bagel egg sandwich with my black coffee, which was my quick dinner before heading over to a gathering. I would definitely return to Dwntwn for another breakfast sandwich and muffin next time.

We stopped by after having to go someplace early as we did not have time for breakfast at home before we left. The location has changed a lot over the years. You still make your own coffee. Great coffee and I'm not much of a coffee drinker. They make specialty drinks themselves. More options of food. The sandwiches are really good and very filling. There's a place to sit at tables. Very friendly staff. We can't believe we've missed out all these years. We will be going more often.

They were substantially filled with cheese eggs and bacon and or sausage. I ordered chorizo on my sausage bagel sandwich. Everything is made to order. My sons said they really liked their sandwiches which were bacon egg and cheese on English. Most of the sandwiches are on the menu with homemade biscuit but we ordered with English muffin. They have ugly sticks and the first time we saw that was many years ago after moving to York. The sticks are made from buttermilk batter and come in differing sugary coatings. People love those and they sell out fast. St Joes is known for its benes. The little beignet dough balls. We have never had them, but customers were coming in and ordering a dozen at a time, so I feel like these are very popular here. They also have a great selection of coffees and lattes. Their prices are on par and reasonable. The staff were personable and friendly. There is a small area to sit inside although that fills up pretty quickly on a weekend. There is online ordering although, one of the staff told me they shut it down when they are really busy. Young people, old people (like me) all seemed to enjoy coming in here. I think St Joes has a large following and for good reason. I'll come again with my 13 yr old twins and try some of those benes soon. I'll let you know, but I am sure anything prepared in this place will be good. I would show a photo of our food but we ate it too fast!

No frills, no crazy pricing, and no attitudes. Everytime we've come here, our drinks have been consistent and exactly what we ordered. I'm also surprised by the amount of negative reviews regarding customer service as we've always had the friendliest baristas in the drive thru and in store.

I paid with a gift card and believed I heard the barista say there was $10 remaining on the card. When I asked about it, she responded rather rudely and said she had told me I had a $10 balance to pay. My husband paid the remaining amount by credit card. After waiting for our order, we received only one bagel. When we questioned this, the barista insisted, that we had ordered only one. Since it was early and I thought I may have misunderstood the gift card situation as well, I assumed I had made a mistake and we ordered another bagel. Then my son noticed that the bag was marked "Order 1 of 2," confirming that there were two items/bags associated with our order. My husband went back inside to explain that we had originally ordered and paid for two bagels, but had only received one, and that we had then been charged for an additional bagel. Unfortunately, we did not have the receipt, but we were very clear about what we had ordered. My husband has since checked his credit card statement and discovered that instead of being credited for the issue, he was charged again--leaving us charged for four bagels when we ordered two. The combination of the rude interaction, the missing item, and ultimately being charged for twice the number of bagels we ordered was disappointing. We would appreciate this being reviewed and corrected.
