Walking down 4th to Kiss and Fly I thought I'd show my gay BFF oil can harry's since he had only been to Rain and Kiss and fly. We go to the door. Cover is free for everyone, which is perfect because I'm 21 and he's 20. The bouncer at the door checks my ID and goes, "THIS AIN'T YOU!!!! WHO IS THIS BITCH?" I blink and say it's me, and he starts saying how this looks nothing like me, etc. He tells me to smile and I do, and he goes "ohhhkay" and gives it back. The only thing different is that I have brown hair in my ID photo from high school. Have they not learned to look at facial features? Then realizing I'm thoroughly pissed, he comes up and says "Hey I was just joking with ya. Seriously! I was being completely sarcastic." Then he asked if I had just gotten out of the shower. Then he said "Let's hug it out." No thanks. So after they mark up my friend to high heaven, we go in. No drink specials, no dancing. Place is packed but nothing is going on--it's like everyone in their own little group standing around. Then the bouncers were surprised when we left 5 minutes later? "you're already leaving?" OCH, there's a reason why Kiss & Fly and Rain get better business. read more

I'm a big fan of Austin. When I fell in love with it, I was not able to enjoy the gay nightlife. So when I was finally able to check it out over a recent visit, I really couldn't believe what a feeble gay scene this city has. I imagined that the city would have really great bars and a playspace or two. Chain Drive has tumbleweeds blowing through it. And Rain and Oil Can Harrys' are trying to mimic the 6th St hetero formula: Loud, bad music to encourage plastic lookalikes to hook up. Austinites are so friendly but not so in the gay bars. It's the all-male cast of Mean Girls. Next time I'll try the Cockpit. But I wasn't really encouraged by these awful bars. What are there 6 gay bars total? in a city this size? That's just sad. It's shocking to me that Austin's scene is way lamer than Houston or Dallas ..which are not in any great shape themselves. read more

I went to Oilcan Harry's for the first time with two of my best friends, and had such a great time! There was no cover charge, and it's one of the few 18+ places in Austin. The people were really friendly- staff and patrons alike. The dance floor was a pretty good size. Cool lights, fog machines, and a platforms to dance on. The DJ played great music that was so much fun to dance to! My only complaint is that it gets really hot on the dance floor with all the people... but the patio is a nice place to take a break and cool off. OCH is a good place to go with your girlfriends. It's a much better alternative than going to some of the sleazeball bars on 6th only to be grinded on by sloppy drunk guys. I would definitely recommend Oilcan Harry's to anyone who wants to have a fun night out! read more

There was hott dancers but really overpriced gross drinks. No cover which is great, it happened to be really crowded the night we went there but the music was decent. I did not like the cost of the drinks though in my opinion it was over priced and didn't taste good at all. The bartenders were slow. read more

I'm from here but moved away several years ago. I came here with my partner who is hispanic. And, I must say this place ....for being in Austin, they're not welcoming at least that was how I felt. Now, I don't think my experience had anything to do with my being white. I think it had to do with how the Management chooses to run this joint. First, when we walked in the bartender who faces the front door immediately asks you what you want to drink. In most places that's no problem but here they have signs all over the place that one must not think about "Parking" = basically not to nurse your drink because you will be asked to leave if you're caught doing this. The only place I've seen this happen is in a straight strip joint I went with my brother to once. My gripe is only because I know Austin as a friendly city. One that caters to all people. Maybe a new breed has moved in and now Oilcan is not the place to go anymore. I do vaguely remember Oilcan's being a stuffy bar when I lived in Austin but I used to be part of their Friday/Saturday nights and I always had a good time. I remember some of my buddies used to tell me they didn't feel welcomed at Oilcan's. Very sad to give this bar a BAD RATING. read more

At tonight's show, a category game was hosted. My fiancé and I were looking forward to having a great time at the bar where we thought we could fit in and be ourselves. We summed up the courage to participate in the contest with another couple we just met and went up together for the "faces" category. We were told we had to perform individually so we immediately moved off the stage. We were publically made fun of by "Naomi" and told we didn't follow directions, stating "that's why you have two ears and one mouth, to listen". She followed up by stating "if you're not pretty enough to be on the bottom of the barrel magazine then don't walk my stage". It felt very uncomfortable, so all four of us moved to the side. Naomi then proceeded to walk over to us in a confrontational manner stating "y'all are pretty but you don't listen, listen to the directions." We stated we were done participating and she continued to try and convince us of what she believed we had done wrong in regards to the game rules. She then stated "because I work here, I am going to walk away but if we were somewhere else right now we would be having a different conversation" in a threatening manner. We all felt bullied by her and unwelcome. We felt safer as gay women on 6th street with heterosexuals than we did at Oilcan Harry's. We are disappointed by our experience and would never recommend this bar to anyone. We were playing a game.... even if we didn't play it correctly, we were not being disrespectful; we hadn't even finished our first drink of the night. This is not how we wanted to remember our people or Austin. We can't believe, of all places, we would be treated so poorly and we are embarrassed of Naomi's behavior as a reflection on our LGBTQ community. read more

I am here by requesting that anyone who reads this stop doing bussiness with Oil Can Harry's or as they are commonly known,as OCH. I was in their establishment on July 29, where they were running a series of carnival games which included a game called "tip the tranny". For those of you who dont know, "tranny" is a derogatory term that is very offensive to the trans community. I spoke to their management and they were not at all sympathetic to the situation. I am asking for a boycott of OCH until they publicly appologise to the trans community. read more

Great venue. Visited on a Friday night and a Wednesday night. Not quite as busy on Wednesday but the Friday crowd was friendly, intelligent, and attractive. Had a great time here before heading out to Rain on 4th a few doors down. read more

i might upset sum people with this review but oh well my friends & i came here this past sunday 2 see jujubee & raven from rupauls drag race. the drag show started at 1030 & we were sooooo not impressed! were all from chicago so we expect great drag shows. these girls didnt even do a lot of dancing & some looked horrible. we were towards the back & the acoustics were bad so we couldnt even understand some of the things they were sayin. the person who was suppose 2 be putting the camera on the show was off & not centered or just had poor angles at times. it was so bad & unentertaining that we left without seein jujubee & raven. ;( read more

What a great place. This is where I started going after the Boathouse closed down. It has seen many changes over the years, but Larry the current owner is just the best guy around. He is not only philanthropic and gives back to our community, but he has amassed one of the nicest most fun staff of bartenders ever. On October 5th, I went to see the newest Drag Survivor, thinking it would be something amazing, like when Honey St. Claire performed last year. But no. Last night, Maya M. Moore did a routine as Bob the Drag Queen, and did it in BLACKFACE. What is this, 1920? That sort of performance has no place in drag, and should never have been okayed by the establishment. It was incredibly insensitive, incredibly insulting, and incredibly divisive, in the worst way. It was really, really terrible. Oil Can was so empty on last Friday night. I waited more than 10 minutes for even an acknowledgement while the bartender was gossiping with his girlfriends. He had such an attitude. A group of four straight girl friends wanted a night out and decided to check out a gay bar. I had meet the owner of OCH prior so we decided why not OCH, and we are glad we did. The Friday buffet was great, Rose was very nice and even fixed some extra food for us. She is a gem!! The bartenders and staff were all so nice and prompt and for a busy Friday night we never waited for a drink. The crowd, though younger than our group was very friendly, very fun. The music was great, dance floor was fun. It was an all around great night. One of the best parts is not having to fend off drunks hitting on you which you have at the "regular" bars. I think we have found our new bar hangout because it was pretty much a perfect night out!!!! read more

I have worked at this place..As a female. One of the only bars that still have a female bartender...that works regularly. ..not a ladies night...but works every night. No other bar in the industry can say that....no other bar can say they have a female bartender on fourth. Bathroom thing....it's unisex....no one has ever been kicked out for going to a wrong stall because it's not yours. They treat women and men the same. They support everything and anything....best bar in austin....greatest MALE AND FEMALE BARTENDERS......so to say they don't support women or lesbians.....um sorry they employ women....no other bar on fourth that is still open has....love this place and the owner who has showed nothing but love and support for ALL!!!!. OCH is definitely a staple bar of Austin...it reminds me of J.R.'s in Dallas and DC, or Hula's in Waikiki...it's somewhat predictable as a video bar, playing whatever music videos the gays feel is all the rage with a few nostalgic old school videos or funny clips played in between, a huge ass bar with super friendly bartenders (I honestly did not find one of them rude at all!), a dance floor that is either really empty with one or two drunk gay guys or a gaggle of straight girls complaining there's not enough gay guys, an adjacent "sports bar" that is waaay to bright and lit up in there although paradoxically over the top cruisy, a pool table, and an outside patio area with its own bar where all the smokers and "social" smokers can go out and chit chat and hear the latest gossip or bitch about something...and that's OCH or any other gay bar in the country....I have to admit, I'm not used to seeing so many straight girls go to the gay bars more than I have here in Austin...don't get me wrong, I love it but it's more estrogen than I'm used to...although the one big pet peeve is that it's always for some bachelorette party. Either way, OCH is a great stop to any bar hopping night...I'm used to going on the weekends so don't forget it is FREE Friday night but there's a COVER on Saturday. Drinks are surprisingly not THAT pricey esp for beer like stella, but it does rack up if your tipsy self starts buying cocktails and shots. read more

Rude terrible bouncer. Me and my friend drove an hour to see Katya on Sunday and we gave the bouncer our IDs and the bouncer told my friend "you caused problems under aged drinking last week I'm not letting you in" and we explain he wasn't there last week, he hadn't been to OCH in about a month, but the bouncer says "part of getting in when your 18-20 is getting past me first, the answer is no. You're not allowed back til you're 21" And pushed us out of the door way. That is such bullshit, me and my friend couldn't get in because he LOOKED like someone who caused trouble? Why don't they actually document who the people who got in trouble were so they don't confuse them with innocent people. Also word on the street is the manager also bans boys he likes from ever coming in because they don't find him attractive. Word of advice to the bouncer: if you're that old to where you can't remember who caused trouble only a week ago maybe it's time to retire, hunty. read more
