We ordered takeout from this place after reading reviews. I saw a mixed bag of reviews so I wasn't keeping my hopes up. I called around 4 pm on a Friday and someone picked up immediately. I ordered 9 sushi rolls for my family (yes, we can eat, lol). It was a variety of rolls, can't remember all the names; I remember my favorites, and those were the shrimp tempura, eel avocado, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and Philadelphia rolls. The person on the phone said they will call me when the order is ready in 45 minutes; I thought that was odd because I never had a place say that. The restaurant is in a quiet plaza and looked like it was a sit in restaurant at one point but turned into a takeout only place. They also gave us a couple egg rolls and crab rangoons for free; it was okay and had little to no filling, but I guess it's the thought that counts. The sushi was fresh, tasty, and CHEAP. I read that if you order sushi too late, they can run out. We got all our sushis and was very impressed by the quality and quantity for the price. This is definitely my new favorite sushi spot. Local Chinese and Japanese restaurant. It is pick up only and good to call an hour and a half to two hours ahead of time. They'll bring the food out to your car when it's finished. They are still practicing COVID protocols so you won't be able to eat inside. Very cheap for how many pieces of sushi you get. We usually get the sushi platter and hibachi chicken. Takes a bit longer since we're getting a cold dish and a hot dish. The hot food is separated from the cold dishes and that's really nice for food safety reasons. read more

This is the most interesting restaurant. At one point it probably was dine-in as well as takeout, but since the pandemic it's only the latter. They have a wide selection of sushi and teppanyaki to offer. The sushi is always fresh and they buy in small batches which can run out during the course of the day, sometimes forcing them to declare "no sushi today" when you place an order... ... and that also leads to the odd thing with this restaurant. It seems that only two or three people work there, which means only one cook doing everything. So be prepared to order dinner at 6pm only to be told it won't be ready until 8pm because the line ahead of you is so long. However, if you're willing to wait, the quality of the food is really terrific at a very low price point. My lunch runs about $20 and that includes four-ish rolls, a bit of appetizer, and utensils. I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, but often we're perplexed how this restaurant can be so good at this price point when the competition charges twice the amount for food that doesn't taste nearly as good. Additionally, the hours can be sporadic. While they're closed Mondays, they will routinely also stop answering the phone either if they're overworked or have run out of food, so it's always random whether you'll be able to place an order and how long it will take. But if you're looking for some solid Japanese food, this is your place in the area. read more

Can you say wow I am impressed by this Hibachi and Sushi takeout restaurant. It looks like it used to be a sit-down restaurant it seems to me that it's only take out as of now. I must not be the only one thinking that it is this good because when I called it was a 2 hour wait for takeout at first I almost said forget it and then I decided let's just wait if it's a 2-hour wait there has to be something special about it I did call at around 5:30 she did suggest next time to call before 4:00 to place my order because they are really busy. So we ordered three steak Hibachis one chicken hibachi and each Hibachi dinner not only came with the hibachi but it also came with a side salad two spring rolls and crab rangoons all for $9.99 and that was a crazy good deal to me. The Hibachi and noodles were so good you could also get rice but we always get extra noodles the Yum Yum and ginger sauce were both amazing. The steak was very tender and cooked medium exactly how we all wanted it and the chicken was also very tender and cooked well done the way we wanted that. It was honestly a perfect meal and for the price you cannot go wrong and there were so many leftovers. I suggest you 100% try this restaurant I was so impressed I will definitely be back to try the sushi and of course for the hibachi but I will be calling at an earlier time but I have to say it was worth the wait. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. The things I love... It's relatively close to home; it's in the middle of West Simsbury, in a strip mall that's like a little "island" of shops surrounded on all sides by farmland and residences. It also has relatively fair prices for sushi rolls and hibachi dinner sets. They usually give a "free gift" with your purchase (of a lot, as I'm ordering for a family of 4-5 people); they give an order of fried spring rolls or crab rangoon -- or both if you order a lot. What's to hate? They're inconsistently open/closed. You call to order take-out, and they tell you there's no sushi tonight and it's only hibachi or vice versa. You call and they warn it'll be 1.5 - 2 hours until your food is ready. They seemed to have switched (after COVID?) to a take-out only business model; you can't dine in. read more

There are only a few reasons I would ever give 5 stars. I stopped in here because I was taking a call and saw the sign and thought why not I'm hungry. The lady who served me was one of the best waitresses I've ever met. I didn't order a lot of food. Just three rolls. They were all good. That's not why I'm giving this place three stars through. They brought me several small single serving appetizers before my meal came out. I have no idea what they were. They were good. Again nothing really amazing but they were good. Updating to five stars. This place is absolutely tremendous. We had a sit-down dinner for two and paid thirty bucks including tip. We even took home leftovers. The freebies here are amazing!! Bowl of edamame -on the house Two crab rangoons -on the house Two spring rolls - on the house Two fried shrimp in rice paper -on the house orange slices- on the house slice of cake- on the house We both ordered one of their $12 Bento boxes - a very generous platter with three shumai dumplings, a 6-piece California Roll, a scoop of rice, an entrée and a salad. I had the General Tso Bento and it was a solid portion of golden chicken with some broccoli in a sweetish sauce. It was excellent. So lets review what we ended up with - a really nice Bento Box dinner plus 6 different things piled on our table that were totally free. horrible service I went here last night and sat down after a long day at work. There were 2 tables of a total of 5 people there. They were not busy. I acknowledged the waitress , and sat down. I waited 15 minutes, I was never offered a menu, glass of water or acknowledged by the sushi chef. She continued to take orders for take out but never came over and took my order even though I kept trying to make eye contact. I got up and walked put &still was not acknowledged or apologized to. First off, I'd like to say that I think this is a pretty small operation that has certainly been affected by Covid. This was my first experience and I'd say that it's promising and I'd definitely go there again. I think they are doing take out only right now and I went and grabbed some food after work. Currently the takeaway is: if you live locally, it's one of the better options around. If you're from out of town looking for a place to knock your socks off, take a drive somewhere else. Appetizers: the streamed veggie dumplings were good but unfortunately overcooked so we're falling apart. The crab Rangoon was cooked a bit too long and the overly crispiness almost cut my mouth, but otherwise tasted pretty good. Salad: Kani salad was fresh and good. I was missing the crunch of cucumber and tempura, maybe a little tobiko would have been nice. Luckily, the tuna hand roll was accompanied by lots of extra crunchies that I threw on top. Special roll: the rainbow roll was fresh and delicious. However, it was rolled too loosely and fell apart when picked up. Sushi roll: the spicy tuna hand roll was good, would have liked a side of spicy mayo as there was just a drizzle on top. The sushi here is very good and it's priced much better than you'll get at Meadow. Only drawback is that I think they're probably understaffed....order well in advance of when you want to eat. This hidden gem is great. For me, it's the simple things that give a place a high rating, like: - Cleanliness - Tasty food choices - Fresh ingredients - the fresher the better - Friendly and accommodating - Creativity with cuisine is a plus Oishi excelled in each. And the funny thing is I would have not expected it when I walked in. The decor and ambiance is nothing fancy or special. No bells and whistles. There isn't a bar there. The menus are paper. But it's simple and clean. When looking over food options, it's not overly diverse or trying to hard. But it has great staples for Japanese with a few originals like the West Simsbury roll. The waitress was very nice and service was fast. To make things even more great were the unexpected free samples they provided that were delicious. One was a spicy tuna Gyoza - spicy tuna enveloped in a perfectly deep fried wonton-like dumpling. Spicy tuna sauce zig zagged on top with a handful of tempura crunchies. Unique and delicious. It also unveiled the chef's creativity and talent for presentation. What I loved the most was the freshness of the food. From the nori wrapped around my avocado roll to the miso soup (which was not like some places where u can tell it was made from a pre-made mix). I had the west simsbury roll and every ingredient was very fresh from the Shrimp to the crab to the avocado. And one more nice touch was after they cleared our dishes we were given a plate of freshly cut oranges that were so sweet and juicy along with a nice square of cake with chocolate frosting. I recently moved nearby, and was excited to try Oishi based on my love of sushi and the Yelp reviews alone. But each time I drove by, there would be no cars in the parking lot. I went in once to grab a menu- there were no other patrons inside and the place was stark and uninviting... I decided to keep going to my usual spot in Southington. Last week, however, an acquaintance was raving about this restaurant. "So good!" she said, "They are just not very well advertised, but you have to try it!" So, since this restaurant is only 5 mintues away and it does have good reviews, I thought maybe my impression was wrong. I went ahead and tried it this past weekend. ...and I should have stuck with my 1st instinct. Don't get me wrong, this place wasn't bad. It just wasn't good. Yes, there were a lot of 'freebies,' but the blandness I initially felt when I walked in there was echoed throughout the meal. Between the lack of ambiance, the server's meh attitude, (seemed like someone's teenage kid who was forced there to help out) and the completely flavorless "spicy" rolls...I still can't figure out what this lady and the other Yelp reviews raved about. Bottom line: even though this restaurant is right down the street, and very cheap, I probably will never go back. Sweet Mango in Southington- FANTASTIC food, sushi, waitstaff, ambiance... A great experience everytime I go, and I will continue to gladly make the drive. FYI: The acquaintance who recommended this place- she was also talking about how her family LOVES Subway. So, I'm compelled to update my review after my experience today. I placed a pick up order over 30 minutes ago and I just got a call from them updating me to say that my order will need another hour and a half to be prepared. That is over two hours for two salads and four sushi rolls. Poor customer service I've been here once and ordered from here a few times. When we came with the family they were very welcoming and they offered several free samples from their menu. Food is very good. The location is certainly off the beaten path for a sushi restaurant, but they put out a very good product. The few times I have been there they have not been busy, but that may just be my timing as we are typically early diners with young kids. Would definitely recommend the restaurant to others. read more

I discovered this restaurant because I was visiting the restaurant next door, and noticed that this one was called "Oishi", which I knew - because I had been learning Japanese - means "delicious". Otherwise, the restaurant is so unassuming that I would not have even noticed it was there. I visited Oishi soon after, and was delighted with the food. They bring an unexpected series of appetizers and little treats while you are waiting for your actual order. The sushi is terrific; not any resemblance to supermarket sushi! The bento boxes are superb. I'm less enthusiastic about the egg rolls and puff pastry appetizers, which consist almost entirely of dough. Unfortunately, when I called to place a takeout order, I was told "sorry, but we have run out for the night." I questioned it and she clarified that I could not place an order because they had run out of food. No more sushi at 7:30 on a Friday? Nothing? Of course this could support that the food is amazing since they sold Everything...but at a minimum, management food ordering practices could be improved. Wow! Oishi is TOP notch, especially for where it's located. This restaurant would still be a 5 star even if it was located in the city. We each started with a sushi roll of our choice, but before we were served the sushi, we were spoiled with three small appetizers ranging from spring rolls, fried tuna, and salted edameme! Then we all received salads, which were delicious. Then we got our sushi rolls. We were so full but not knowing about all the extra complementary appetizers we ordered meals too! The salmon hibachi bowl and steak bowls were AMAZING! THEN!!!!! She brought us free dessert. I can't say enough about this place. We live in the center of the city, and we will gladly travel the 25 minutes to Simsbury to eat at this FANTASTIC restaurant. Thank you so much for your kind, generous hospitality. My meal played out like a symphony of flavor hitting every crucial note to leave me satisfied and smiling. Upon being seated by a dynamic family duo of presumably mother and son, my family and I were treated with complementary appetizer upon appetizer.
