The restaurant was clean as always with a nice ambiance. The servers were all so sweet and helpful. We ordered miso soup to start. It's a favorite that is consistently excellent. I ordered udon noodles with veggies and my friend ordered soba noodles with veggies. Both of us loved our meals! They were hot and delicious. For dessert we got the tempura cheesecake. Wow! Beautiful presentation and tasted creamy and not too sweet. The tempura was a bit challenging to cut with our spoons but it was worth the struggle. Another amazing meal at Umami! It was Valentine's Day and they were busier than usual, but we still received the same FANTASTIC service and AMAZING food!!! Everything about this meal was perfect, from start to finish. We were seated immediately despite it being quite busy. Enjoyed a bottle of Josh Cabernet for an incredibly reasonable price. My partner's meal arrived fresh and piping hot -- my sushi arrived beautifully arranged (with the CUTEST soy sauce plate art!). We even made friends with our table-neighbors. This is my go-to spot for sushi in the area. Fish is fresh, portions are reasonable, price is good, and the staff is very friendly. I particularly like their Tamago sushi served warm. Came here on a monday evening (around 8pm) for dinner. Place was practically empty except for one more table. We were quickly seated and attended to. Food came out pretty quickly and it all tasted amazing. Chicken was just a tad dry. The beef teriyaki was devine, and so were the rolls. Best crab rangoons i've had in the area so far! While eating, server was always checking up on us and providing refills to our waters. The restaurant itself is cute. Small inside but nicely dimmed with yellow lights and a cute toy motorcycle collection by the sushi bar. Very calm and delicious experience! Stopped in here on our way home after doing the Oak Ridge farm dairy tour. Wasn't sure about the place just based on the outside, but walking in we were greeted by lovely staff. The nice waitress took care of my children and myself very well. She even brought the children extra cherries for their Shirley Temples which was absolutely sweet of her. My son and I ordered the yellowtail tuna, the Yankee roll, and some shrimp sushi which were very yummy. My other two children shared shrimp fried rice which my daughter inhaled most of the shrimp. We also got an appetizer of shrimp shumai and edamame beans. Unfortunately, a few of the shrimp shumai did not taste very good. I did not want to bother the waitress, but I'm sure if I had told her she would've remade it. They were very attentive and very caring staff. TLDR = tiny portions for the money. I go to a lot of Japanese for sashimi. I just had it lost night, for example. My wife and I had Spicy tuna hand roll Sashimi Platter ($54.99) Shrimp Teriyaki A Sprite and a water. Without tip it was $86 We figured the spicy tuna hand roll would come first. Nope, Shrimp teriyaki. Then Sashimi. Then/with the very dry spicy tuna hand roll (as she made 2 quick trips) The fish WAS VERY FRESH (WHICH is why I'll give them a 1 out of 5 stars) The portions were ridiculous. (See photos). So small that the smallest piece was SLIGHTLY larger than the diameter of the disposable bamboo chopsticks. All of the pieces were 1/8th inch thick OR LESS. We asked why they were so small, and in compensation they have us 1 piece of imitation crab. Oh well. Service was decent considering there were only 3 people working there - husband (sushi chef), wife (waitress, and very good), and a busboy/cool. They should price things right and sell you what you order... Not provide pieces which are about 25% of normal size. read more

A place I would travel to for an amazing sushi evening!!! I always forget how good this place is because it is my backyard and not in a "foodie" area. However, I know my sushi and this place never disappoints. Always fresh, well balanced rolls with precision cuts and preparation. I love the Kani salad and peppered tuna salad (no salad) as appetizers. Fresh clean flavors to brighten the palate. Tonight we did two rolls the Flaming mountain roll and the Royal king roll. Both were well balanced and tasty, and very different from each other. Which I like. Both had texture and didn't just mush in your mouth with so many other sushi places do with their rolls. Thankful for yelp or I wouldn't have found this place! My friend lives near here so we decided to go for a sushi lunch date. It was a Friday afternoon and there were only a couple other customers. Staff was kind and attentive. My friend and I have tried many sushi spots in the state and we usually get gyoza as an app. We both agreed this was the best gyoza we've had! Their lunch specials are great, we got three rolls for $15 each. All my rolls (sweet potato, California, and spicy crab) were amazing and I loved the presentation! Looking for a new sushi place and found Umami. They do a lot of takeout but we were early so it didn't impact service. Also a few parties of 10. Very casual place. We liked the food a lot. The sushi pieces were on the smaller size based on my experience, but very tasty. Rolls were much better as was the special roll. Prices were decent also. Not too high like other places. We were looking for a sushi place to go with friends and stumbled upon this place that had good reviews on yelp. It certainly did not disappoint. It's had a hole in the wall feel to it, by that I mean it doesn't give off an overly elegant date night feel but the food certainly makes up for it. We started off with a few appetizers- the crab rangoons were good but our favorite was the rock shrimp. The gyozas/dumplings were solid- we tried both the fried and steamed. The fried were by far my preference. The main meals were what set this place apart. The presentation was a nice surprise and everything tasted great. We had the sushi/sashimi combo, Naruto roll, spicy crab roll and bumble roll. All got fantastic reviews. And teriyaki chicken for those looking for non sushi options. Lastly- highly recommend the tempura cheesecake for dessert as well. If I had something bad to say it would be the service wasn't extremely fast, but we weren't in a rush either. read more

Their sushi menu is also hugeeee. Seems like they get mostly take out others rather than dine-in, so we were like one of two groups there. My boyfriend and I are new residents of Manchester and decided to make the drive to Vernon in an effort to find our new go-to for sushi. You are able to make reservations but on a Saturday night at 6:30 pm, they had plenty of tables available. We ordered two salmon hand rolls, the Narcato, Seattle and Vernon roll. Everything was so fresh and delicious. When our plates got delivered, it came with cute little drawings and a welcome message. Our server was wonderful and very sweet and asked us at the end what our favorite roll was. It was really hard to choose but we went with the Vernon roll even though everything else came pretty close. The shrimp tempura in the Vernon was huge compared to what we've had back in LA. I've lived in CT for 4 years now. Of all the restaurants I've visited in CT, Umami was always the most enjoyable. A delight to my tastebuds. The shushi rolls are exquisite and stylistic with good taste. The fantastic rolls, the sunshine rolls, the union street rolls,the wonder woman rolls, the crab Rangoon are all equally excellent options with many more to choose from. Haven't been here in a spell, last time was a couple of years ago and it was great. The interior was pretty benign and lacking warmth but food and service was great. We went there to splurge for our birthday dinners (we have the same birthday). What they changed was the atmosphere and decor. It is much more pleasant and accommodating. Earlier that day we attempted to go to Ginza's in Bloomfield (previously our favorite Japanese sushi restaurant) to get our "free" birthday entree. Unbeknown to us Ginza's was permanently closed due to owner convicted of federal charges. We had our sights set on Japanese so we returned closer to home and ate here at Umami's. The food and experience nothing short of excellent. Instead of a 40 minute drive to Ginza's, Umami is literally in our backyard, 5-10 minutes away. It is our new best place for Japanese cuisine. I like to order a lot, for appetizers, we had a fried soft shell crab and steamed shrimp shumai dumplings, for entrees, I ordered 2 different Chef's Special Rolls- "Umami Roll" and "2019 Roll" for my meal..... Wife had vegetable tempura with asparagus that she enjoyed immensely. Nothing was wasted and we walked out full and very satisfied. Decided to check this place out after seeing the reviews on yelp. Relatively new but definitely lives up to the 5 star rating! We had the crab rangoon as an appetizer. It came with 5-6 huge pieces, perfectly crispy. There's a lot of options on the menu but we went for the sushi. They also had a couple of special rolls available which sounded pretty good. There were a variety of rolls on the menu and all of them sounded delicious! The rolls were very creative and just not your standard California, rainbow, or spider rolls. We ordered the out of control roll which is wrapped in soybean paper, yankee roll which is lightly fried, Snow White roll which had fried banana and mango sauce on it, and the ultimate king roll which had tuna, salmon, crab, and the lobster salad in it. All of the flavor combos were really good and tasted fresh. The presentation was also beautiful. Great food & excellent service! Our waitress was really friendly and attentive. The chef brought over some treats for us at the end of our meal. Restaurant is pretty spacious and also has a few seats at the sushi bar. I order the Sushi special roll #s 4 12 15 24 All four were beautifully plated and tasted extremely fresh. The hype is real! And Miso Soup- I got a small and it was a bit above average portion. The taste better than most but I've had better. Seaweed salad- came with a slice of fresh tomato on top but otherwise a very typical portion and taste. Rock shrimp- the sauce is their spicy mayo I think but it's just a light drizzle with more on the side. These folks are imaginative, serving up fresh skillfully prepared sushi, sashimi, tempura, even the miso soup was definitely several cuts above standard fare. This was such a great find in the Manchester/ Vernon area. We were attracted to this place because they have Japanese items, fried noodles and rice, and noodle soup options (options besides just sushi are preferable for us). Our waiter was extremely friendly and prompt. We started with the fried pork gyoza and it was delicious. It was perfectly crispy on the outside and the sauce was good. Then we ended up with a spicy tuna roll and a fast and furious roll. They were both fabulous. The raw fish is fresh and has perfect flavor. For my meal I had the miso noodle soup with soba noodles and added tofu. It was very good and a huge portion. I really enjoyed that for the tofu and gyoza they asked if we would like it fried or steamed. And they have a 10% off coupon for yelpers!! Overall, YUM.
