On several occasions (my back, my shoulder, my knee) I've gone to him because I've hurt something and he's spent a great deal of time working on it resulting in substantial, sometimes almost complete, improvement. He's also tall and strong and has huge hands and is strong enough to massage me the way I like, and gentle and knowledgeable enough to back off when necessary and take a more oblique approach to get the desired result. I believe he also has a sports massage background amoung his studies and often does some active stretching towards the end of my massages with him which really helps. It's a small thing, but I've never encountered it with anyone else. A+ He does house calls too, which is rather convenient. I've had massages both at his place and at mine, and honestly I kinda prefer to be in his set up but it's nice to just have him come over. Oh, and he's also relatively reasonable on price. Massages in this city can get quite expensive. Of course, good as he is you may want to become a client before he gets so popular he starts raising his prices for new people.

He has transitioned out of his office in Mill Valley, and now does mostly house calls in San Francisco. He works on a lot of people that do yoga, dance or otherwise bend their bodies into strange positions. A lot of his clients are also very active outdoors - hiking, cycling, rock climbing, and so on. I think he enjoys the challenge of working with active people, helping create harmony in their body so that they can continue being active and healthy. I have had trouble with my knee and hip for years (car accident) and his skillful hands have offered me the first real hope for healing the injuries. I use to get regular headaches - due to botched chiropractic sessions - and after a couple of sessions with Mike, headaches have become rare. Mike shows up at your door with everything he needs to provide a stellar healing session: table, sheets, music, and a deliciously warm heating pad for the table. All you need is space to set up the table.

For example, he told me to tense my bicep (I'm there for lower back which he has not yet addressed) so I "made a muscle". He said "I didn't ask you to tense your whole arm, just your bicep." Which was true so I tried again but it wasn't intuitive to flex one muscle without others, so I did it wrong again. He then grabbed my wrist and bent my arm and said "see?" Oh, not flexed like I thought. I didn't know. This went on and on -- basically he was showing me I involved too many muscles because I was tense but it was like trial and error with no focus on my back pain. Finally, 55 minutes in he gets to my problem area and ultimately had to go 5 minutes overtime (making a to-do about resetting some sort of timer) and telling me that other practitioners only do 50 minutes. Maybe so, I thought, but they probably also give you treatment on the problem area and not a game of really hard (for me) "Simon says" until 55 minutes have passed. Anyway, bad fit for me who had an acute issue and needed treatment fast.
