Seen this on social media finally trying it out. Had the salad, vegan & Oko fries, Takoyaki, JFC, Yanki Burger, Oka chicken bowl and spicy tuna bowl. The pre-order system is perfect for certain types (like me). Staff member I interacted while picking up the food with was very friendly and the truck was clean with nice graphics on it. Food-wise, I appreciate that my chicken bowl isn't full of onions (like at most other places). Very tasty, will definitely order again. Takoyaki was great, the addition of red pickled ginger cut down on the heaviness I often feel from overindulging on these. JFC stays crunchy and had a good flavor to it. The vegan fries were also very tasty and the Oki fries offer a unique flavor. They were the first to be gone. The salads were fresh and the dressing was tasty. My kids enjoyed the burger and tuna bowl. Okamoto offers foods you don't normally see out of a food truck and it's well done. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for them now and will visit again the next time they're close by. read more

I remembered that in 2021, I tried some of the menu items from this truck and it was horrible then and it is still horrible as of today. This is the culmination of flashy and overhyped food, I do not understand the hype at all. The JFC was dry, and the sushi burrito is just meh. The truck itself has a nice vibes, the artwork is phenomenal, and yet that is where all the wonders stops. I tried this place again today, went to visit the Asian American fair in Pierce College. I ordered the sushi burrito, and boy I made the wrong choice. The rice was not cooked all the way, so you can still feel "crunch" as you byte into it. The wrapping was so lazy, they could not be bothered to wrap the ends of the burrito, it spilled from both ends. The fish was ok, but the ratio of fish to rice was disappointing. I saw some "streaks" of avocado, if you call it that. Finally, they should not call this a sushi burrito, because the rice does not have any making of a sushi rice, its just plain rice. Tried this food truck for the first time in Torrance. I had signed up for their two dollars off coupon through Facebook, but unfortunately never got the email with the coupon code for it. I let them know in person about it and they said they'll honor the two dollars off but it has to be a minimum purchase of $18 or more. I was going to try their curry chicken sandwich, but because of that coupon minimum I just decided to get their mochi cheese sticks instead, which was very good and different from anything I have ever had. I've seen this food truck parked on Torrance Blvd. on my way to Redondo Beach so was very happy to see it at the Cherry Blossom Festival today. I tried the fried chicken plate and 6 pc takoyaki. Servers are very friendly. Chicken plate has a very generous serving of chicken with salad and rice. I asked for the teriyaki sauce which was very tasty. It's been a long overdue event but shoutout to Gerald and his team for making our daughter's birthday event a hit! Gerald worked patiently and politely with us to obtain the proper permits to host the food truck at our event. I heard about this food truck originally since they go to FGC (fighting game community) events. One of the founders is a fighting game player himself. I had the great opportunity to try them out because they came all the way out to Arizona even though they are originally based out in southern CA. I saw their menu online and was looking forward to trying out a specific menu item but was a bit disappointed that they came to the AZ event with only 3 food items. I ordered a Katsu curry sandwich which cost me $14.96. It's definitely a bit pricey for just a sandwich but everything about it tasted absolutely amazing. The buns and the Katsu chicken were crisp and full of flavor. I'm verily impressed by just their whole system. They've got anime figurines for sale and their whole truck is represented by these anime characters. They even kickstarted their own short anime series too. Had lunch in Thousand Oaks today.... The Okamoto Kitchen truck was parked at a park, and it seemed like they were staying busy. I ordered the Kastu Curry Sandwich, the Okonomi Fries and the Goku Style JFC (Japan Fried Chicken!) The Okonomi Fries has good flavors, yet they were unexciting. Not sure where the mark was missed on these. They look great and the toppings seemed to be good, but they just didnt deliver that satisfying bite after trying them. Next I tried the Goku style JFC. The fried chicken is good, fully battered nice and evenly and was very fresh. I enjoyed this on its own however.... That hot sauce is where it takes it to another level. It is so good! It is spicy, and flavorful and really completes the chicken. I really enjoyed the hot sauce. If I had any complaints about it, it would be that they didn't give enough for the amount of chicken served. Finally, I tried the Katsu Curry Sandwich. The chicken Katsu was breaded and seasoned well. It was a good sized piece of chicken and the curry sauce was very good, not spicy (hot) at all and it made for a well done sandwich. Overall a nice experience, great location for a lunch truck. The winner of this meal was the Goku JFC. I'd get this again any day. read more

I tried Okamoto Kitchen when their food truck stopped in Simi Valley (They were located on Tapo St). Service was fine, but food was mostly just okay. I wasn't in the mood for a burger (which makes up most of the items on their menu) and opted instead for an Okamoto bowl with Beef (Gyudon) protein and white rice, Japanese BBQ flavored House Fries, Classic (Lemon and Mayo) flavored Japan Fried Chicken, Spicy Tuna Stack, and their Sakura Latte drink (not pictured). Starting off, the Sakura Latte was not great. It's a really bright color and looks bubble gum/neon highlighter pink. I'm not sure what their Sakura Latte was supposed to taste like, but my sister and I took one sip each and couldn't drink the rest after. It had the consistency and taste of Pepto Bismol. This was the worst of the items we got though, the rest were better. I liked the fries because they were thin and crispy. The chicken was crispy as well but maybe too much to the point it was hard to bite and chew. The tuna stack was small and it tasted fine, I've just had better. Lastly, my sister and I agreed the best item we got was the Okamoto bowl with Beef (Gyudon). I thought it was supposed to come with veggies but ours didn't, which I would've liked. The beef was really good though! It tasted like the ones I get in restaurants or Japanese markets. If I were to come back, I'd get this again. The "Japanese Comfort Food" painted on the colourful truck hits "the nail on the head". 1) Chicken Katsu Curry Burger: Moist, soft, slightly sweet Brioche style bun yet sturdy, egg wash golden brown shiny finish. Fried chicken breast, that is moist, meaty, good sized, is well coated in Japanese Panko bread crumbs for a crunchy, crispy finish.  Curry that has sweet, "hot" spices like fenugreek, chiles, black pepper, turmeric, etc., is thick, sweetish to stick onto the Panko chicken. Mayo for eggy, rich acidic oiliness. Shredded cabbage for refreshing watery, crispness. (I took the burger home & added my own purple onion, tomato slice, avocado for more vegetal accents.) 2) Fries à la Okonomi(yaki): Okonomi Yaki is a savory pancake often topped with Sōsu/Worchester Sauce, Ao Nori/green powdered seaweed, Katsuo Bushi/thin shaved dried bonito fish, Beni Shōga/red, salt pickled ginger, Mayonēzu/mayonnaise, sometimes Sakura Ēbi/small dried shrimp, green onion. So the above topping ingredients sans Sakura Èbi used for Okonomi Yaki are used to flavour the Euro French fries. Like all ancient cuisines, Japanese food has had "fusion cuisine" influences for thousands of years. 3) Kara Agè (kah rah ah geh) can be anything deep fried in oil. Chicken seems to be the default and is marinated in Shōyu/soy sauce, garlic, ginger then coated in a light herbed, corn starch to add a light crunch when just fried. 3a) Chicken Kara Agè is topped w/ Teri Yaki style sweet Shōyu sauce. Sprinkling of roasted white sesame seeds adds a toasty, oil fragrance. 3b)  Goku means extreme in Japanese. In this case, the ketchupy, spicy Miso/fermented soy bean paste and dusting of Sichuan chile powder adds an earthy, sweet piquancy.  However, I couldn't sense the peanuts. Goku may not be the "hottest spicy", but definitely not for chile wusses. Okamoto Kitchen serves hearty Japanese fare. It's not delicate, nuanced cooking Kappō style, but it's meant to be filling, stick to your ribs food. I have been curious and wanting to try this food truck for a few months now, and finally did. The workers aren't that approachable. The first time I stopped for this truck, I waited for a while to be acknowledged by an employee who opened the food truck door but with no acknowledgement from them. And then finally got told by another customer I had to order online. I didn't know. On this second time around, I ordered the 3 hit combo meal of Yanki Burger with Okonomi fries with a side of Soy Garlic Butter but was actually given a wrong side of fries it seems. There was no flavor or seasoning at all. Had to double check my order and the box had "soy" written on it, but definitely no flavor. Bummer. Was looking forward to the garlic flavor. The burger was surprisingly a decent size. Good... definitely can taste the sesame seed oil through the marinade. I love sesame seed oil flavoring, but it tasted just like that and only that for me. My son enjoyed and ate all the okonomi fries except for the ginger. I am 50/50 on whether I would order here again or not. Kind of pricey. But I am curious about their other food items. read more

Ordered online from a stop in Oxnard. Writing a fresh review because I've always loved the food but service time and quality was going downhill for a couple months. I'm happy to say that the last few trips out to my area have really turned around! Truck window was still open, they recalled me by name (I had to do a quick change to my order via support email), and order was packed up very smoothly. I am updating my review of this food truck, I had written a good review of this food truck before but I had driven a long way to buy my lunch at their Sherman oaks location and surprised to see their truck parked but with their windows closed, I knocked and they refused to take my walk-up order (nor were they taking Walk-up order) their truck window was closed. It was already 1:30pm I guess they didn't want or need my business since they are too busy with their pre-orders, I had driven a long way to buy their food but I guess they can't be bothered to take my order. It was strange to see a food truck with it's windows closed and not taking orders parked along with 3 other food trucks, I mean why bother having a food truck that goes to different location each day if you are not going to take walk up orders. You might as well just have a brick and mortal store and have them delivered to their customers. It must be nice to be able to turn away customers who sees a food truck and wanted to try out their food. I do not like to order my food and pay for it online I try to go after the lunch rush, their food isn't cheap but good, I was following them on Twitter and FB to see when they will be coming near me, but no more. I know when my walkup business is not appreciated. I rather go where my patronage is better appreciated. When I found out that this truck was coming near me for the day, I immediately placed an order online after seeing the menu photos. I got three burgers, and now I'm regretting that I didn't try the rice burger too. From best to least favorite: Yanki Burger: Nicely cooked beef patty with a yummy sesame-garlic teriyaki sauce. I absolutely loved the fried egg on top; the yolk came oozing out and added even more flavor to the patty. Combine this with the onions, cabbage, and mayo, and you get the perfect burger. Nom Bomb: Teriyaki-glazed deep fried chicken with cabbage, tartar sauce, and jalapeno. This burger was good, but kind of plain. For the price, I'd rather buy a few McChicken sandwiches. I appreciate that there is a vegetarian version available (chicken replaced by tofu). Bird of Fire: Deep fried chicken with relish, mayo, onions, and cabbage. The chicken was the same as the the chicken in the Nom Bomb. It was mainly the sauce that made this sandwich different. The Goku sauce is a medium level of spicy. Nothing very exciting about this. I liked the Japanese bbq house fries, which were thin, crispy, and delicious. It was a super easy process to order and pick up the food. I received an email when my order was ready. It kind of sucks that the time slots for pick up are by the hour, so you don't really know when to expect your food between that whole hour. Okamoto is a food truck that travels throughout LA. They've been advertising on my Facebook feed for years now, given that they do visit Alhambra and San Gabriel during the week, which are in my neighborhood. I saw this month that they were making a pork belly sandwich with rice patties for buns. My wife loves rice burgers, so I sent an email to the owner requesting if they could make the Yanki Burger using rice patties instead a of a standard brioche bun. Graciously, he was able to fulfill my request. As he instructed, I went to the food truck at the Alhambra location in the evening. I asked for a few rice burgers, and they accommodated my request. My wife and I both loved the rice burgers. We actually cannot find Japanese style rice burgers anywhere in LA, so this satisfied our cravings and were amazing. The burger was cooked to about medium temperature, the egg was over easy, and the sauces they used were amazing. The rice was crispy around the edges but became soft around the center, and complimented everything really well. I wanted to thank the staff at Okamoto Kitchen for going out of their way to complete a custom order for us. We understand it can be difficult to meet the needs of all the customers, but we really truly loved our rice burgers. We will definitely come back again! read more

More like a 3.5, but I'm rounding up. We were pretty lucky that they were in our area because despite going to every SoCal anime convention for the past 10+ years I have always avoided going to Okamoto. Don't get me wrong it's not because I had any qualms prior to trying their food. It's because at every anime con I've gone to, you can ALWAYS count on their truck having the longest line. I'm already in 20 lbs of make up and in a cosplay and wig that are destroying me. I don't want to suffer any further by waiting potentially hours in line (based on how huge their line was for their Persona collaboration at AX last year). But I digress... We saw that they were in our area and ordered online. You pay through PayPal, they give you a receipt and you can choose a window of time to pick up your food. They also give you a text reminder as well. At the time slot for picking up the food, we only had to wait like 2 minutes for our fries to be ready. Service was cordial. We got the: 1) Nom Bomb: -Lots of teriyaki sauce (great to dip the fries in) -Chicken is very moist on the inside and nice and crisp on the outside despite being drenched in sauce. -You get a nice latent heat with jalapenos and it mixes nicely with the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce and sourness of the tartar sauce. 2) Katsu Curry: -Great quality katsu and a decent amount of curry. -Not bad. 3) Japanese BBQ Fries: -Probably the most disappointing pick of the bunch. -Despite being the last thing that came out for our order, it became the coldest quickest. -For around $4, there was barely any of the Japanese BBQ seasoning powder on it, so it just tasted like regular fries. -I'd skip this tbh. Both sandwiches were super filling and I could barely finish one by myself. Price-wise it's typical of food truck prices. Overall not bad seeing that I pre-ordered. With that in mind, I don't think I'd wait 40+ min in uncomfortable shoes and cosplay in 100 degree weather just for their food though. read more

The food is excellent and delicious, at the perfect temperature. I have NEVER had a problem with them. Sometimes the people who post all these 1 or 2 star reviews expect absolute perfection. These super nitpicky people (who I noticed complain about the tiniest things!) need to be reasonable especially when Okamoto Kitchen is doing the best they can in the middle of a pandemic, no less. Relax, guys. If the food truck runs out of something, order something else! Everything on the menu is delicious. I love the house fries, takoyaki, Japan fried chicken, spicy tuna stack and the katsu curry burger! Seriously, you cannot go wrong with their food. Try them all and see what you like - they price their food so competitively compared to other similarly-themed restaurants and food trucks. And it's such creative cooking. I love how they are always trying to meet the wants and needs of the customers. For example, to order on line, the window went from 1 hour to 30 minute windows. That way, we are not waiting around for long. You also get an message that your food is ready for pick up. When I get the email, they are in my neighborhood, I find myself waking up a little earlier than normal because I'm so excited. Saw that they were in Downey by my job and I wanted to try them out. I ordered the bbq fries, fries chicken combo and their punch. I ordered same day about 10am for a 12-1pm Delivery time. My fries were Luke warm, so they would probably Be better if fresher. I enjoyed the light bbq flavor on them tho. They didn't send any ketchup with them tho. The chicken was pretty good. I love Lemon so I wish they would've given me more than one slice. The salad and dressing were very delicious. The white rice was a tad too stuck and a bit dry, but overall it was a good lunch. It's a uniquely difficult time for restaurants, but Okamoto Kitchen continues to thrive. Not just because they're mobile and equipped for delivery but because they consistently make delicious food. And they go everywhere, including the South Bay, even Torrance and the beaches! You can't go wrong with anything in their menu, starting with the JFC. Okamoto style is great, with a soy/teriyaki-esque house glaze, and I'm curious about the spicy sauce. A side of Fries is a must. Both the Japanese BBQ and Soy Garlic Butter are awesome. Eat all the sandwiches. The Nom Bomb is a fantastic fried chicken sando, the crispier Katsu Curry oozes deliciousness, and the the Yanki Burger is probably the best hangover cure for miles. All are served on a buttery brioche bun which is definitely a bonus. This stuff doesn't travel well, mostly because of the frying. It's meant to be eaten hot and fresh in front of the truck in a busy Saturday night. But don't get confused. This has been one of the easiest deliveries I've had during COVID. Ordered on their website, paid via PayPal, and they were outside my door in an impressive 30 minutes for a contactless delivery. I ordered the Bird of Fire (deep fried chicken, dill relish, cabbage, pickled onions, mayo, Goku sauce, and a touch of honey) along with Japanese BBQ fries and a sushi burrito. Delivery of this kind of food is definitely not the same as getting a meal hot and fresh off a truck, but I am happy to support businesses like this one that are adapting to safely deliver food to customers around town. Thanks for keeping us fed during a pandemic! The Bird of Fire sandwich had some succulent tender fried chicken - like juicy goodness inside. I also really liked the combo of dill/pickled onions and touch of honey. Next time I might try the ghost pepper action and spice it up even more! There were two food trucks sitting next to each other and 90% of the business was going to Okamoto's, so many people must really like it. Unfortunately, we only thought it was "okay". SERVICE: Online ordering was easy, however there were no options to choose sauces, and none were offered when picking up the food. FOOD: I ordered one of each: Spicy Tuna Stack, Sushi Burrito, Nom Bomb sandwich, Katsu Curry sandwich, and House Fries. I tried to order Croquette Classic, but not on the online menu. Trying something new, I ordered the BIRD OF FIRE (deep fried chicken, dill relish, mayo, pickled onions, cabbage, Goku sauce, honey) with HOUSE FRIES (shoestring fries seasoned with katsuo-tougarashi). Typical for this truck, the lines for pick-ups & to order were both long, but they usually bang out the orders quick so my wait was only 15-mins. Not too bad. Just like curry sandwich, this bird was served hot & fresh! I love the flavor & texture combination, & the yin-yang temperature of the hot chicken & cool veggies... a bit sweet, a tad tangy, a little tart, a slap of heat, & lots of crunch! The bird was on the skinny side in comparison to other food trucks that serve fried chicken... they have more girth/weight than OK's. That being said, the good thing was the batter not overwhelming the chicken, which I hate because I feel like it camouflaging the protein to make it appear larger than what it really is. The Japanese BBQ fries was alright; the shoestring fries were perfectly fried but they were salty as heck! Once I rubbed off some of the spice, it tasted pretty good. Being a lover of hot chicken sandwiches I was hoping for the best but was sadly disappointed. Chicken was moist and tender but there just wasn't much flavor unfortunately. Even the crispiness wasn't that crispy. With a name like Bird of Fire I'd expect it to be hot and spicy... with flavor exploding and me crawling to find a tasty beverage to wash it all down. Sadly... none of that surfaced. It was just okay. My final conclusion to this truck is that it really has potential. You have GOT to eat everything HOT right when they hand it to you. I actually drove home before I ate it which was only about 10 minutes but even that apparently was too long since my experience suffered. This is a fantastic food truck I always keep an eye out for it when I'm in LA. Found it today and it was exactly what I expect from them. Delicious and innovative food combinations executed well is what these guys do. I love their fried chicken options in particular. They have mastered the balance of breading to chicken that's is delightfully crispy and well seasoned. If you see the truck out it is worth a stop every time. read more

My go-to place for food at Anime Expo and other anime events. I always enjoy their katsu curry sandwich. The chicken cutlet has a nice balance of crispy and juiciness and goes well with the curry. They sometimes also have other items as well, such as the yanki burger and curry rice, that are just as delicious and filling as the sandwich. Recently, at AX Chibi 2023, I tried out the okonomiyaki fries since Okamoto Kitchen was out of the katsu curry sandwich. It is like chili fries except the fries are topped with okonomiyaki toppings such as ginger, JP style mayonnaise, and okonomiyaki sauce. The okonomiyaki fries are now of my new favorites from this place. It has a delightful balance of sweet and savory. The fries were also crispy and weren't soggy. If you're at an event like Anime Expo, I recommend visiting Okamoto Kitchen before or after lunchtime/dinnertime because the lines become long, and you will have to wait a while. One important tip is that during Anime Expo and other events like it, they only accept credit and debit cards. Be prepared for that. Furthermore, if there is an item that you absolutely want, I recommend visiting the booth ASAP as some popular food items like the Katsu Curry sandwich sell out by the end of the day. read more

I had already picked up lunch somewhere else but was in the mood for a drink outside the norm of soda or water or juice or alcohol, etc. While trying to figure what to have, Okamoto Kitchen just happen to be posted during my walk back from where I was coming from and figured, "Eh. Let's see what they have." First and ONLY thing I saw was their green tea latte. It was all tunnel vision from there. As I pulled back to wait, I noticed a lotta people waiting for their order numbers to be called. I also noticed all food orders coming out were not only aesthetically pleasing, they were also of quantity. But back to the drink: it was exactly what I was craving for. It had that signature green tea taste with a hint of cream and served nice and cold. I was overall impressed enough to consider trying their food next time they come around. Flavorful but oily! That fryer ain't hot enough Had this at ALA, and it was the only food truck I was interested in. I got the Okinomiyaki fries and chicken karaage. Fries-- interesting!! - this was really nice! I love Okinomiyaki. So the sauce and mayo went perfectly well with the friends. I was actually surprised how pickle ginger worked so well with the fries. The ginger gave a refreshing cut through the savory fattiness of the fries. I just wish the fries were crispy and not soft. Karaage -- skip - Came with a slice of lemon and container of mayo. Had this at ALA! And it was definitely a mix of enjoyable and disappointing. We had the Japanese fried chicken, the chicken katsu curry sandwich, the okonomiyaki fries, and the punch drink. Fried chicken: it was pretty dry for typical Japanese fried chicken and definitely NOT crispy enough. The flavor was also mostly just pepper and didn't have anything that stood out. The sandwich: it was tasty, but definitely needed more curry! The katsu was overcooked and dry and you can barely taste the Gouda cheese. The fries: these were on point delicious! Bad thing? Fries are not crispy. It seems their frying with different menu items is... variant. The punch drink: OMG. The only thing I would get again here. I drove by and noticed the red truck on the main street. I decided to come back and give it a shot - RUDE SERVICE! It's a shame that good food with a bad impression overall equates to not going back! I patiently waited for the crowd of school girls to leave due to covid. I overheard to the gentleman in front of me they said we had to wait 5 minutes to take our order due to online orders. I get that they take online orders, but we were treated like second class citizens. Also can they post that they prefer online orders on the truck so someone new like me is not broadsided? I patiently wait for my turn and begin ordering in the most direct and polite manner with please and thank you, because I understood they were busy. But my time wasn't respected. I asked for the burger and then I said I please did not want the shredded cabbage and I would like to make it a combo since it said that below the item on the menu. The man talking my order said, "well, you're just going to have to wait." He helped another customer while I stood there. Then he got a pad and pen and wrote down the order. They were out of the Lime drink during lunch time, so I opted for the punch drink. The food was fine, but after waiting 45 minutes when there was hardly anyone else there and only 1 person came to pick up food in the entire time, I was given my order and shown the paper and he said, "see? I made a custom order for you. I actually appreciate my order being correct and them "customizing" it by leaving out an ingredient, and I'm sorry if I come off as unreasonable, but the tone and the urgency and frankly if there were other people there I would be embarrassed.
