To your response I don't know what part of "it was very hard and hard to chew" did you not understand because it was definitely not crisp on the outside soft on the inside. All you did to mitigate the problem was explain to me how things are cooked. Which still doesn't excuse how bad your food tasted. Like I said, I've worked in many different japanese restaurant that cooks crispy rice differently to know how it's supposed to taste. I've also tried rice buns before so please, instead of telling your customers wrong just acknowledge that your customer had a bad batch and have quality control. You're not even there to actually check the quality of your food when it was served. I asked for a refund, I even said on the phone that the katsu was fine, you decided to be hurt about my comment, told me to not come back, talked over me, and hung up. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. If you can't even handle one complaint from that day, why are you even in the food industry that requires customer service? I picked up my food within the time frame I was supposed to. I picked it up 30 minute later than the "ready" time since it took me a bit to drive there, but still within the time frame. My food was understandably not hot anymore, make sense so that wasn't the issue. The problem was the quality of the food. The fries was hard. It tasted like it was old, like it wasn't even cooked that day. Both the yanki burger and katsu burger was alright. The bun tasted stale and the burger itself lacked flavor. And don't even tell me I don't know the taste, I lived in Japan, I know the flavor profile. I also ordered their spicy tuna on crispy rice. It was hard and tough like bad beef jerky. It was very hard to even try and bite off. The owner actually contacted me when I asked if I could get a refund which was nice, but he was rude after. He tried to explain to me how it was made like it justify how hard it was. It make sense if they put the dish back in the fridge for it not to go bad but you know what happens to potato starch or corn starch that you fry and let it sit in the fridge? It becomes chewy/hard and worst case, inedible. He seemed to be nice at first handling my complaints, but he quickly told me to not come back there to eat again. I threw my food away so yes, I would not be coming back. He also asked what ethnicity I was like it mattered...it was weird to be honest. Thank you for the prompt refund, but you shouldn't be treating your customers in a rude manner, especially when they have valid complaints. Also, stop using "essential workers" as an excuse for your bad behavior, unfriendly staff, and bad product. I saw an ad for this place on IG and they were going to be parked by my favorite taco food truck. So I decided to give it a try. They suggest ordering online. However the online ordering for pick up isn't very clear. I finally realized that you have to click delivery, then the option for pick up orders is there. You can't customize anything , but they do take PayPal payment. So that's convenient. You sign up for a one hour order time window. Then they will make the food and let you know when to pick it up. I was not in the area, so I picked a window, then headed over when I could. Unfortunately the food was ready about 20 minutes before I could get to them. So my food was kind of cold. It was ok because I was able to bring it home and give it a boost in the air fryer. Still, husband and I weren't impressed by anything that we ordered. We got: * Fried chicken - This tasted like it was cooked in old grease. The sweet sauce that came with it tasted off and unpleasant. * Potato Balls - If you're used to Porto's, these will disappoint. Again they tasted old. * BBQ Fries - This was the best thing we got. But they were just regular fries with some seasoning. * Side Salad - Basic mixed greens with 2 grape tomatoes and a few slices of cucumber Since everything tasted stale, I don't see myself trying this out again. Have seen them advertising on social media, decided to give them a try. Ordered the katsu curry, sushi burrito, and soy butter fries. Ordered for pickup and when I arrived and truck was closed up, knocked on the back door as instructed. There was no answer. So pounded on the door instead and it was opened. I recommend knocking loudly as when they opened the door I heard loud music coming from inside. Gave him my name and he disappeared back into the truck and re-emerged a couple minutes later with my order. We will start with the katsu curry. Flavor of the curry is good, not a whole lot of it on my sandwich, wish there was more. The chicken was extra thin about a quarter of the thickness you see in the menu picture. and mostly breading. It was extra crunchy. The menu says shredded, cabbage, and mayo, but what I was not expecting is a sweet coleslaw, so it wasn't a nice crispy cabbage and mayo spread on. It was a dripping cabbage coleslaw, which was very sweet too sweet for me. I did not taste any pickled onions. The french fries were good. I'm not a fan of crispy fries, so these ones were perfect for me. Soggy fries with good seasoning. The sushi burrito was a big mess for me. As my friends and I made our way around the NorCal Night Market, the list of foods I wanted to try was more than I could count. So many things, so little time! However, while it was tough to figure out what to start with, it was easy to figure out which food truck to check out. Sure, their bright lights and flashy anime decorations may have been what caught our eye, but Okamoto Kitchen's menu is what actually hooked us. Curry katsu sandwich? DONE. Even despite the ridiculously long line... Now, in the interest of fairness, I have to admit that our experience with Okamoto Kitchen came under less than ideal conditions. During the peak hours of NorCal Night Market's dinner rush? With the line holding steady at 45 people deep? If you couldn't guess, waiting 90+ minutes in line for food is just as awful as you'd imagine it would be (yet, it wasn't even the worst line we saw either...). At least we had plenty of time to decide on what to get. Not that I needed it, mind you... While several of their sides looked really interesting (particularly their Japanese Fried Chicken), the event's lack of seating meant getting just one thing to try - their CURRY CHICKEN KATSU SANDWICH ($13). For the most part, this was pretty decent, though not without its flaws. The shredded cabbage, pickled onions, and gouda cheese were fine and I really liked the chicken cutlet (crispy and juicy). However, it needed more curry (the sandwich felt dry, as there was only a thin layer) and I didn't care for their choice of bun, as the brioche added a sort of "greasiness". Note: 3.5 stars for this visit. Been a long time since we've had them so we opted to give them another try. As of Sept. 2022, they have rolled out an online ordering system. If you make an online order, you are more likely to be guaranteed what you want as you can order ahead of time. To what I saw, they also paid attention to online orders so they wouldn't run out of food for those that ordered online when a person came to order in person. Although, we ordered it for pick-up at 5:30pm, we honestly didn't get the food until 40 minutes after that. So, a bit of managing orders and making the food on time needs a bit more work. Food-wise, we had their JFC, katsu curry burger, and their gyudon (beef bowl). The fare wasn't too bad, but I think the quality suffered a bit due to the number of orders and they were rushing to get everything cooked and done. Visually looks okay despite the to-go aspect. For my food, I had the katsu curry burger with the okonomiyaki-style fries. The fries were honestly better than the burger I thought. Mainly because the katsu chicken tasted a bit burnt. It was either the katsu batter that was burnt from trying to cook faster on hotter oil or the curry sauce was a bit burnt from being heated on the stove for too long. I couldn't distinguish it, but I surmise a little bit of both. The curry taste was very mild so it doesn't give off a large amount of spice or heat for those hesitant to try a curry. Your tongue won't burn and it's very mild. The fries were better because I liked the sauce accompanying it and the fries had a good exterior crunch to them. A decent amount was provided and the taste profile did taste like an okonomiyaki so a winning combination in my opinion. The family's gyudon was adequately portioned and the beef tasted a little under seasoned to me, but that might be due to the curry affecting my taste buds. The JFC was moist, but it had a lot of batter on it. I think they double battered it on accident, which resulted in some gummy residual batter inside. Luckily, it was cooked through, but it wasn't appetizing to eat some gummy batter with the chicken. All in all, they aren't bad if you are into anime-styled food that comes from a food truck. I still enjoy them once in a while for different things. Despite the misses this time, I would still consider supporting them in the future, because I understand it's food truck food and not a restaurant. I've been a very loyal fan of Okamoto Kitchen and have tried basically every item on their menu from all the times they've come to town. Last weekend I went to the OC Japan Fair 2022 and wanted to show my girlfriend how good Okamoto Kitchen was. I made her get my favorite item (the Katsu Curry Sandwich) and was excited for her to try it. However, the after being told to wait 10 minutes, we both tried the burger and it was straight up cold! The inside of the chicken was cold and the buns were dry. It was clear that the food wasn't made fresh and had either been refrigerated or sitting out for quite a while. We couldn't finish our sandwiches and I was very disappointed at the lack of consistent quality Okamoto Kitchen had shown. I could've used more curry on my sandwich, it was a little lacking. Otherwise delicious. The gyudon was yummy when I first ate it, but as leftovers, it evidently became too salty and sweet. I am obsessed! They been to Hacienda Heights locations twice so far and I ordered from them twice. Extra points for delivery with no extra fee! There's more on the menu that I still need to try. We ordered food for 4 people and 2 drinks which totalled $65.00 After 3 hours of waiting we were handed a bag with 2 Styrofoam containers and questioned if there were 4 orders. We received 2 orders in each of the Styrofoam containers. One container had tuna poke (cold) mixed in with a hot chicken sandwich. The poke was warm and tasted like fried food. Ok, can you say yum? This is such an awesome concept! Mobile Japanese food - how neat. I was super excited when I saw an advertisement on Instagram saying the truck would be near me and I jumped on it! Their social media suggests ordering online ahead of time, so I did that. Easy to order and pay. But it's easy to track the location of the truck on their social media sites. Went over at our assigned time and THE TRUCK IS SO CUTE! I came across this establishment on Instagram. I didn't know anything about them but I saw their truck would be in town the next day. The whole family was excited to try their food. You order online, you choose a pick up time and they will contact you when your order is ready. You also pay online so during this pandemic it really is a contactless transaction. My pick up time was between 11-12. At 11:01 I received an email informing me my order was ready. My daughter wanted the Bird of Fire chicken sandwich but she was worried it would be too spicy so we ordered the sandwich with the spicy tuna stacks as her Back up. My son wanted the katsu curry chicken sandwich, my wife did the nom bomb and I decided on the yanki burger. The food was great and everyone was happy. My daughter said the heat from the bird of fire got her in the throat. I tried it and I though the spice was perfect. Not overpowering but too spicy for her. I've been a fan of Okamoto Kitchen for a while. I always buy their food when they were at Jiu Jitsu Tournaments. My favorite is Sushi Burritos and Katsu Curry Sandwich. Since the COVID-19, the tournaments were postponed so I was missing the Okamoto Kitchen. Lucky me! I follow their IG and found out they were coming to my city!! Needless to say, I had to have it. I loved the Num Bomb Burger. It was tender and with yummy sweet yet salty sauce. I was a bit disappointed with Chicken Karaage. Usually they are so good but it was fried too long... Very dark and hard. But considering, the hot weather, many people, this happens. My kids ate them regardless and love them. Next time, we'll try again... Attended a graduation party this past Friday and this food truck was catering. Something different but the guest of honor is a huge anime fan so made total sense to have Okomoto Kitchen there. There were four appetizer and four entrée options to choose from. I went with the potato balls and the sushi burrito. OMG both were amazingly good and the portions were absolutely spot on! Folks also said that the Okonomi burger with the fried egg was also very good. The truck showed up on time, the service was fast, the food was delicious, staff were professional and everyone was totally satisfied. Just settling down from an AWESOME weekend spent celebrating my brother's grad that started with Okamoto Kitchen's wonderful catering. We had a party of about 80 people and Gerald and his team went above and beyond to ensure everything went smoothly. They were on time and service was fabulous! With safer-at-home in place, one of Okamoto Kitchen's occasional stops has been one of my only sources of non-chain fried chicken, and certainly the only source of sushi burritos. They're still not all that exciting. Their fried chicken is chunks that are larger than bite-sized but smaller than whole pieces, the original is better than the kind of weird "hot", but neither is anything I'd want to eat if I had better choices available. One of the fried chicken sandwiches was somewhat more palatable but not anymore distinguished. Sushi burritos are okay. Tuna or tofu. Eat fresh, even 30 minutes old something oily inside soaks through the wrapper and it gets gross fast. Oh my gosh! How good can a food truck get? Well, let me tell you. Okamoto Kitchen has my vote for top Japanese comfort food truck in LA. The wife and i took love Japanese food especially after our trip to Tokyo a few years ago. Life is good when you can have a local contact take you around to some of the best restaurants but also local hot spots most tourists never get to experience. When we found out about Okamoto Kitchen, it was like a blessing given the shutdowns we all have gone through thanks to Covid19. Look at the picture. There's so much variety from the Poke (which they were sooo nice enough to customize for me and my who do not eat anything spicier than ketchup!) to the Karaage to the Yaki burgers! (Also had the curry burger too as well as a sushi burrito that you don't see as it found its way into my belly long before my brain said "Stop!! Picture first!") The flavors are pretty close to what we had in Japan and the ease / short distance of travel makes it a deal to go get. They deliver too if you aren't up for a quick drive to their truck. Try it. Just one dish to start. You won't regret it. My recommendation would be the yaki burger. Now, go get some!! read more

Review for Truck in Monrovia. 8/17/2020 Wow these guys were busy! So busy that they stopped taking orders at the truck! After ordering online, we waited nearly 35 minutes in the heat to receive our small order of two entrees and two drinks. Which by the way, we had to wait for an email to receive the food. Only 3 staffed in this tiny truck with No air conditioning, yix! They must have been hot and our food was definitely sweaty because of it. Our Yanki burger was dried out for sure, not even the egg stood a chance. The classic style JFC chicken was nothing impressive but the drinks were excellent ! Wow Yuzu lime soda and the Japanese milk tea REALLY made this 3 star review the side salad was so soggy it reminded me of soup, whose idea was it to place cold salad with hot chicken? great job guy. My brother actually brought passed by their food truck on the way home and picked up some food to try. We got the Japan Fried Chicken Plate and some fries. We chosethe Goku style and that sauce is hot, especially by its self. It was an interesting flavor, that's a little hard to describe; you can taste a little sweet but it was still spicy hot. I got used to the spice as I ate it with the chicken, but I will say having the rice & salad on the side helped cool down the spice. The food overall was good. We ordered couple things but only the takoyaki considered ok, the burgers (bird of fire and curry) are too simple in terms of flavor which they need to put more thoughts there, the protein need to be marinated to accompany with your sauce and veggies not just throw it in there cluelessly. The curry wasn't strong enough to stand out for our expectations. The fried chicken was dry and the meat is kind of dark meaning it could be doubled fried which was a shame.. not a place I would reorder sorry man read more

Hands down the best food truck experience! Gerald and his crew always whip up an incredibly tasty meal and do it with an upbeat, positive attitude. Not to mention the creative and easily recognizable design on their food truck. Taking it a step further, I also found their website to be extremely user friendly, informative, and stylish. You can tell they definitely went above and beyond with the details compared to other food trucks. Okay, onto the fun stuff... Most recently, they agreed to cater at our wedding after we told Gerald how much we loved the food and wanted to incorporate a fun alternative to the traditional wedding meal. He agreed but immediately told us to sample the interesting food options first to make an informed decision. It was really neat how he didn't pressure us and offered to be part of the process instead of simply providing a transactional experience. He also provided us with full transparency on the pricing details and catering options available. The initiatives that he took made the wedding planning experience that much more stress-free. To top it off, he even came by the wedding venue to run through the plan for the event as well as discuss all the little details to make sure we were in agreement. Needlessly to say, we received SO SO SO many positive comments and praise for the professionalism, efficiency, and, most importantly, great taste of the entire dinner reception thanks to the hard work of Gerald and his team. Man I love this truck and fair warning for everyone new to this: Be prepared to wait! even without these times of physical distancing this truck, has had super long lines during conventions and other events. I mean it's a food truck still! It is not a restaurant with a large kitchen. I have gone twice past couple weeks when they were in Santa Clarita and had no issues. Best bet is to use their online ordering system and pick a time to go you know it probably won't be busy, like between lunch or dinner times. If you are in a hurry, this probably not a good time to do a walk up order to this truck. As for the food, I absolutely love the JFC Goku Style if you just love fried chicken with some nice spicy kick to it. I also recommend the nom bomb or the chicken katsu curry sandwiches. First time visiting Okamoto Kitchen... Tried the Japan Fried Chicken, Okamoto style (special glaze, sesame seeds and green onion). It was really good - I'd definitely recommend it! It was piping hot, the chicken moist and very flavorful with the glaze, which was just right and not overpowering. The Okamoto truck happened to be at the Tanabata Festival in DTLA Little Tokyo. After surveying all the food choices, the Japan Fried Chicken was really the best food offering--- turned out to be a relatively good value choice for $7. The only drawback was that the wait was so long in the unbearable heat! Also, the menu choices seemed limited, and they ran out of some of their beverage items. But would love to try some of their other menu items in the future! read more

Always saw this truck outside of Anime Expo but never got it due to the line for the truck and the line to go back inside the convention center. Finally got to try their food truck when it came to SCV. The Katsu curry burger was pretty good! The curry didn't make the Katsu super soggy. The vegetarian nom bomb was alright. It's pretty much tofu for a burger. And the fries and drink were what you'd expect. Overall it was pretty good and I would go back if I get the cravings for their Katsu curry. read more
