This is the best sushi spot I've found on Long Island! It's such a hidden gem. I highly recommend!!

A simple hole in the wall sushi spot. If you are looking for showboating and flare you may be interested to look elsewhere, however from the moment you walk threw the door you will receive a friendly greeting in a clean welcoming establishment. I eat sushi everywhere I go, trying any suggested restaurant I'm told and from the day I found this local gem I have found myself there at least once per week for at least the well priced lunch special. The fish is fresh the staff is attentive and friendly. I recommend this to anyone looking for a return spot. After two years I feel I need to reiterate how amazing this local sushi spot is! Okeno is on of my favorite sushi places. The restaurant is very casual and clean. The fish is always fresh and prepared well. It's also never crowded which is a plus. I highly recommend the fireball appetizer. It's absolutely delicious and works easily as a starter for two people. The gyoza is also very good. My favorite rolls are the dragon roll and kabuki roll. I have tried about 10 different rolls here and have never been disappointed. I would recommend this place to anyone. read more

The staff was very attentive to what you needed when you needed it and to what you didn't need on your table. When walking into the restaurant it honestly smelt like a dirty fish tank. I only stayed to eat because my best friend recommended it to me. Even though the place smelt like old fish, I had to try the fish. I ordered the salmon teriyaki bento, the dinner option, it came with a soup or salad, and sushi or sashimi. To come with it, I ordered the sushi and salad. I also ordered the vegetable udon stir fry. Everything came out good, (I even took my leftovers home), including the fish that I was wary about. Although I didn't eat all of the raw fish, it tasted ok but the smell of the place kept throwing me off. Besides the smell it wasn't bad food. If you like udon soup, stir-fry, teriyaki, or cooked rolls, this is a place to try. Since today was my only time at Okeno Sushi, I can't say that the smell is always like this, maybe they had a clean up error or something. read more

Went with my daughter and decided to sit and not do take out, well when I say big mistake, it was a big mistake! This smelly hole in the wall is exactly that and that hole must be where all the gnats flying around come out of! They were crawling on the walls and was everywhere. My daughter and I were so grossed out we barely ate and left after 15 mins. So if you want the extra protein this place is for you, but for you others, order or eat at your own risk! read more

Used to order frequently then got food poisoning from one of the tuna rolls...never again.

I have been going to Okeno ever since they opened and still do even though I moved out to Ohio for college last August.. I love the food there. To me it is by far the best sushi I've had. It's freshly made and well prepared. The atmosphere fits in perfectly. It's the best!! The staff I would be greeted by was super friendly, had amazing customer service. And actually knew my name after becoming a long time customer. I would recommend this place to everyone! Even coming back to visit for breaks or vacations I'd make it a point to stop by with friends or family to talk with the owner Mae and have a nice plate of sushi! It always had that welcome home feeling to me. Me and my friends would just pop over to okeno randomly for a snack sometimes. **And to be fair the ones that complain about them closing during 230-4 (don't remember specific times). But the Japanese Ramen "tensuke express" I work at by my college in Ohio. We close at 230 so the cooks and cashiers can prep for the next group of customers in the dinner rush and also relax and have a break and eat if they are there all day. So don't get angry if you happen to call or go to okeno when they are closed.*** The first part was for how it used to be! But the last two times I came to visit I noticed a whole entire new staff no Mae or anyone I recognized. To be honest they aren't really friendly or sociable like the old staff was. It made me feel more of your just a $ sign to us then that at home vibe you'd get. staff they make me feel rushed while eating and quickly grab plates off our tables like right after we finish. The next thing I noticed that the sushi wasn't tasting right and a lot of the regular things I ordered were totally made different with new things added. I also ordered a couple orders of plain salmon sushi now you normally got two pieces for one order I ended up getting just two pieces when I ordered 2 orders that equal to a total of 4 salmon pieces. But the menu says two per order. So I'm not sure if they changed it and just didn't update the menu? As much as I love okeno I do miss the older staff tremendously. I will try to give it a shot more with the new staff and changes to certain items on the menu but I think I'm going to slowly drift away from them and maybe stop by only when I go there with friends if they are going there on their own. I'm not going to bring up to go like I normally would. And it's sad. I do wonder what happened to the old staff... That being said I'm not going to give it a terrible review. What a nice surprise!! Drove by this place for years. Jump off the expressway at exit 68 south and your there. Small strip mall, small little neighborhood Sushi take out place. Big value for great sushi, fresh well made sushi right on my way home. I ordered three specialty rolls none of which was more than $11.00, you cant go wrong!!!! I'm so disappointed. I've been going to Okeno almost weekly if not more for the past year and half! Always a great 4-5 star experience. But, recently discovered it's under new ownership.. I usually get the Red Dragon which is Spicy Tuna, crunch & topped with a slice of regular tuna. I got it the other day, it was so spicy & almost bland from too much of a mix for my senses. Tonight, was a whole new level of a bad experience! I got the Lost Roll which is Spicy eel, crunch , topped with spicy tuna crunch , layered with avocado. ( normally 1 of my top 3 recommended specialty rolls) tonight it was just a mushy Saturated combination. No real good taste. I grabbed a regular Yellowtail - scallion roll, the yellowtail smelt & tasted ultra fishy! ( yah, fish that smells fishy you're probably laughing at me) but it's supposed to have a clean light ocean taste not smell like the bunker fish I use a bait at the docks ! Also, grabbed a regular California roll just as something to balance out the flavors. Ended up just being a huge chunk of avocado & tiny piece of crab meat! I remember it have a piece of cucumber in it but not tonight... the other day when I got it, it was an over ripe piece of avocado when it's hard & tasteless... but shrugged it off. Now I'm starting to think it's the new ownership & new workers. The final straw tonight was the miso soup, I open the lid up to get hit with such a stench that my gf just looks at me like I go to drink it from the container, it just smelt like dirty dish water! Didn't have more than a few sips but it was watered down & bland. I would of gave it a 1 star but the despite the new front of house/ cashier / servers being so new(first day for one of them & one of them made common errors, they were very nice & professional. Hopefully they get their sh*t together cause I'm not going to go back for at least a month! I wish I went with my original idea of a Caesar salad from Carlos pizza next door..... read more

My husband and I cannot get enough of this restaurant. It's a perfect place for a quick bite to eat or a carry out dinner. Prices are on point and do is the food at all times. We love their vegetable seaweed roll and their red tiger roll. Okeno has never failed us except for the one time we forgot what their business hours were. So always check before making a big order and realizing you'll have to wait an hour before they reopen. read more

Who knew a strip mall sushi spot would be a five star rating. This place serves fresh fish sushi rolls and delicious cooked dishes as well. The staff is friendly and inviting, they seem to know everybody that walks in The door. My husband and I enjoy coming here when we are visiting our Beachhouse. This sushi spot should not be overlooked. My only wish is that they had chicken Katsu on the menu :-) read more

This place always serves the best sushi. I've never ever had a problem with any order, the service, or anything else of the sort. My main point is tho that they have the absolute best egg fried rice I've ever had; and if anything about it were to change I would be very, very upset for a very long period of time. I am always skeptical of new sushi places despite it being one of my favorite foods. Don't let the run down market next door fool you, this little place has some of the best Sushi in the Mastic, moriches Shirley area. Blows Tony's Asian Fusion out of the water. I have no idea how so many people have rated this place at 4 and 5 stars. I heard of this place and decided to Yelp it...got decent reviews, so I decided to try because it's close to work for a quick lunch. To be safe, with any unknown sushi joint, I ordered a California Roll and a Miso Soup. Can't mess that up, right? Wrong! The California Roll was microscopic, lacked cucumber, and was nothing to write home about. The wasabi was just "there" and the reddish ginger was kinda dry and just weird. The miso soup was "hot enough" I guess, had plenty of seaweed and little tofu pieces, but it was just too watery and lacked flavor. Another way of cheaping out on the customers. Service was just ok, the decor was like waiting at a local bar that was poorly decorated. Glad I only ordered this stuff, I don't care HOW cheap this place is, the quality shows it. Have some more respect for yourselves, people, you can do much better. Overall, a generous 2 stars, and a big Thumbs Down from me. read more

Since my last review I've probably eaten here 5 more times. The staff here are extremely friendly and the restaurant itself it clean and beautiful inside. If you live in the area and are ordering take-out, it's worth it to go there in person to order because they offer some really creative and delicious specials on the specials board. Had the spicy tuna roll, snow dragon roll and out of control roll the other night and all were very fresh and presentation was beautiful. If you're a fan of pepper crusted tuna you must try the tuna carpaccio app. w/wasabi sauce, it's out of this world and the wasabi sauce it comes with is probably the best I've ever had and boy is it HOT ! Great Value and quality fare bring people in to this outpost in the middle of normally Chinese-Pizza-7-11 fast-food Long Island. It's a bright, non-intimate venue that's very clean. No liquor license, but the strip mall has a liquor store and convenience joint a few doors away for alcoholics. The menu is big on rolls. A ton of styles, but beware. The "snow crab" is a processed into a spread, mixed with mayo to hold whatever is started as together. And nearly all rolls are drowned in sweet sauce that masks the flavor. The above is not a criticism of Okeno, but more a reflection of what has happened to the simplicity and beauty of sushi over the past decades. Many say they love sushi because it is doctored up with crunchies, sauces, fruit, etc. Many of these creations look more like party favors than food. My advice: If you REALLY love Japanese cuisine, forego the rolls that are topped with the "snow crab" mess. Also, skip the ones with 4-6 kinds of fish or shellfish. Your palate can't discern that many flavors at once anyway. Tell 'em you want the sauce left off and either order it on the side or skip it. That way you shall enjoy the really high quality ingredients used here. Most of the best items are found at the back of the menu, where the more traditional Japanese offerings are found. Also, the prices are less for the "real" items! The staff is great, with a real desire to please. Since everything is made to order, there's no shame in tailoring your food the way you wish it, so don't be shy about leaving things off or adding more of something. Not a lot of plain sushi/sashimi items, but all the usual fare is covered. Again, not picking on Okeno, but don't order "white tuna". It's not tuna, and is actually illegal to serve in Japan and Italy, as it's responsible to many cases of gastro-distress--meaning -laxative- emergency. Tuna is red. Toro (fatty tuna) is less red. "White" tuna is escolar. Not related. A long review, but here's the poop, so to speak: Nice place, high quality, good people. Fine prices. Don't fall for the trendy "disco" sushi that they (and everyone else) offers, though. Order from the back of the menu, or design your own rolls. Wish Okeno continued success! read more

Great suhi, especially with their prices for lunch specials (3 rolls for 11 bucks with a soup or salad). Sushi tastes great and the service is very friendly. I have gone like 6 times in the past 2 weeks and everytime the sushi has been as fresh as can be. The sushi Chefs also gave my co-worker and I some free sushi from the bar! Spicy Yellow Tail roll, Spicy Tuna roll, Spicy Salmon Roll, Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese roll, Alaska Roll, and Eel Avocado Roll. The for our Appetizer we ordered the Fireball. I just can't even begin to say how amazing this was. Soup Salad we ordered the Tuna Avocado Salad. Totally to die for!! I can't give it enough thumbs up!! Just had lunch here today and it was great. There aren't many sushi restaurants around where I live so I was both excited and intrigued to visit. The hostess at the register greeted me when I walked in and was nice. She answered some questions I had about the menu and when I placed my takeout order offered water or tea while I waited. Seating tables are on the right while the sushi bar is on the left of the dining room. This is a small place but, very adequate I'm sure to meet the needs of locals who wish to dine. I had the red dragon roll and a rainbow roll; both of which were fresh and delicious. The red dragon has spicy tuna with crunch inside and is topped with a slice of tuna and I really enjoyed it as well as the classic rainbow roll. They have some appealing sounding salads and appetizers I'd like to try as well as other rolls. I will definitely be back for more soon! read more
