Even after moving 25 miles away, I still make my way back. Now I'm coming here for lunch with my mom, my daughter, and my grandkid. At this point, New Star has officially become a generational restaurant for our family! Over all these years, the service, food, and atmosphere have always been pleasant and welcoming. There's something special about being able to return to a restaurant you've enjoyed since childhood and now share it with the next generations of your family. I haven't tried the hibachi yet, but I've heard great things about it, so that's definitely on my list for a future visit. The appetizer platter came with 2 egg rolls, 2 dumplings, 2 bbq ribs, 2 shrimp toast, 2 crab Rangoons & 2 fried shrimp. The egg rolls were fresh and full of meat!! Very crispy and delicious! 7/10 I didn't have the dumplings I don't care for them myself but my wife likes them she gave them a 6.7/0 she said she's had better. The Ribs had a nice bite and flavor to them just a tad tough for me. 6/10 The shrimp toast was my favorite of the appetizers the were crispy not greasy and the shrimp was definitely there. I enjoyed the flavor of them. 8/10 The crab Rangoon however were a disappointment to me. They were definitely missing the green onion and crab! lol. Mostly cream cheese but fried well 4/10. The fried shrimp were ok. Average 5/10 They give you a lot of food for your money! As all the dishes had a great amount of protein in them! They don't skimp on the meat at all. The jumbo shrimp fried rice a great flavor and nice texture. You can taste smokiness in it. 7.5/10 The Singapore Noodles was loaded with shrimp, chicken and bbq pork, egg and veggies. It had a kick to it from the curry very flavorful and the texture of the noodles were spot on! 7.5/10 the pad se eew was also loaded with beef! (You have the option of protein) the beef was very tender, the sauce had a nice spice level and the noodles were perfectly cooked. 8/10 all in all i would definitely recommend checking them out! Come for the congee and you tiao (aka "Chinese long john" smh) and rice boxes, and stay for the good value and long history of this stalwart local spot. ===== The first time I came here, they were cash only and you could only order from the no-nonsense lady at the front. Now you can order from their digital kiosk or the fantuan app (and possibly others?) and use your credit card on those! I'm sure they still prefer cash, though, and you probably get a slight discount by ordering directly from the lady. We usually get the pork + century egg congee, you tiao, soy milk, sticky rice ball (it has you tiao, tea egg, pickled mustard, and pork floss in it), and tofu pudding (both savory and sweet versions). I've also tried a bunch of their other items and they were all solid (e.g. fried chicken wings, salt + pepper squid rice box, singapore noodles, etc.). The only thing I don't really like ordering from here is the siu mai since theirs is on the porkier side and I prefer having more shrimp. My nitpicks in case anyone from the restaurant actually reads these reviews lol: it would be nice if reusable plates/utensils were provided for folks dining in to cut down on waste. Sometimes the ratio of rice to non-rice in the rice boxes is a tad high. English translations for the Chinese signs on the walls for special items would help with inclusivity. And maybe if the decor and lighting were zhuzhed up a little, folks would be more inclined to dine in. Overall, though, please keep doing what you're doing. This place is super fast, reliable, and reasonably priced. Even though it's been many years now (ack, I feel old), I haven't noticed any drop in quality. I love that I see the same lady working there every time. No clue if she recognizes me, but I like to think that she does.
