Came here for a wedding celebration and the food was good. They serve some traditional Cantonese style cuisine, such as jellyfish, Peking duck, and sweet and sour pork ribs. Service was surprisingly good, and the dining experience was great. My parents are Chinese restaurant snobs, and they liked it here. Automatic "will try again" for me!

The food was tasty but salty. Both dishes we got were tasty but there was not enough meat or shrimp bc the prices range from $18-$19 so you expect a certain amount of food. The decor could use some modernization from the 80-90s feel. Street parking only and either you pay on the app or find free street parking which is nearby but you need to be lucky. The wait staff were nice and accommodating.

Hot and sour soup gets an A+, despite sloppy serving

The food/service/ambiance here: everything was good (maybe could use a good carpet-cleaning though). Nothing was really spectacular, except my daughter got the meal that came in a basket made of taro, which I had never seen before. It was interesting but not something she would order again. I always like to try hot and sour soup, and theirs was very good. It was super hot outside and I would have appreciated more water without having to ask a couple times, and we wished the mango smoothies would have come before the meals did.

Overall Thoughts: Evergreen is one of the older restaurants in the Old Chinatown area serving a diverse, expansive menu of primarily Cantonese staples. While I really liked some dishes (namely, the Fried Egg Tofu and Fried Taro Basket), other dishes were just so-so. The interior is arranged in classic, spacious Chinese banquet style, and the service is quick and direct. Food I tried: - Wonton Soup: Refreshing and aromatic, but there are better wonton soup options out there in Chinatown. - Fried Egg Tofu with Pea Pod Tips: Really good and would recommend!! Pea pod tips were well-sautéed; the egg tofu was full of flavor and had a great crispy exterior texture combined with a soft, silky interior texture. - Szechuan Eggplant: As a lover of Chinese-style sautéed eggplants, I was disappointed by this dish. The mix of eggplants with American broccoli didn't work for me, and the eggplant wasn't soft / fried enough. - Deep Sea in Basket: This is a creative dish that I haven't seen before in other restaurants in Chinatown-- it's sautéed seafood placed in a "basket" made of taro. The basket was the best part in my opinion-- it was both soft and crunchy, and had a nice subtle taro flavor, like eating taro chips. - Mongolian Delight: This was a standard, but very solid and flavorful dish of sautéed veggies and beef. The beef was tender and the flavors were rich. - Thai Pineapple Shrimp: Didn't love this dish; it was originally supposed to be mango shrimp, but they ran out of mango and substituted pineapple. I didn't love the monotonous flavor combination of the sour/tangy pineapple with the mildly sour/tangy sauce. Split between 4 people, the total came out to ~$30/pp including tax/tip, which was solid considering we were all extremely full afterwards and still had leftovers to take home. -- Price (relative to peers): 4.4/5 Food: 4.2/5 Ambience: 4.7/5 Service: 4.6/5 Overall Value: 4.2/5

Fried Oysters 2 orders for $50!!

I have not been to Evergreen restaurant in over a decade but my family wanted to come here for a traditional Chinese dinner and it was not great. We wanted the fried oysters but since there were 8 of us, we decided to order 2 orders and it was $25 each order for a total of $50 for 2! Wowza! Probably one of the most expensive meal I've had for a long time and it was not even a lot of food. Service was good but very short handed. Seems like only 1 waitress is really doing her job while the owner sat around peeling peapods during dinner rush hour which made no sense to me. Get up and help your waitress! Why peel peapods on a busy weekend dinner? Food was below average and it was just not that flavorful. For $300 and less than 10 dishes which is about $30 per dish, it is a bit absurd which I will never go back again.

We had a 70th birthday party for my brother in law. It was amazing! Food was good and the owner is always nice to us. We got to know each other and our family over many years. We had lobsters. Birds Nest, Salt and Pepper pork chop, HK steak, beef chow Mein, fish filet chow Mein , egg rolls, crab Rangoon, stuffed crab legs, crispy chicken, fried salt and pepper tofu, just too many to think of...we had 4 tables together and I think originally 5 or 6. The staffs are tentative. We also ordered a cake and brought it there! Would recommend this place.

Authentic Guangdong style seafood and everything else. Low key but solid. Great for family or close friends dining (not for fancy business dinner)

    Bean Curd With Straw Mushrooms

Chinese food in a family friendly environment. Evergreen is one of the average restaurants in Chinatown surrounded by so many others. It has about what you expect from somewhere like this. Lots of things that come on rice, average flavor. The prices are kind of high mostly. I checked it out with the woman recently on an evening. Pretty average size place but there weren't many people inside. There's a few big tables. Menu is pretty typical of American Chinese. We each got the Bean Curd With Straw Mushrooms. It's about $13 for the only size. This is only among a couple of the vegetarian vegetarian items with any tofu. It's not much of a selection. The others only have vegetables. Anyway it was pretty good. The tofu was pretty crispy and had good texture. Hard to find a reason to not like it, but still not liking this enough to regularly be coming. It's pretty average for Chinese American food. There's lots of other places to choose so we'll try around for better ones before coming back here for the next visit.

If you are looking to dine in a original 1980s Chinese themed restaurant complete with original carpet floor and all, look no further. This restaurant can use a few updates! The food is just okay. I regularly visit Asian restaurants and decided to give this one a chance. Sad to say I won't come back unless they add more flavor to the food and update decore. Service is also okay.

Service was fine, nothing standout but about what I expected. 6/10. The Peking duck was the highlight. Crispy skin, juicy meat, and tasted super high quality. Only thing is the cucumbers weren't the freshest and I wish there was a bit more seasoning, but still amazing. 9.7/10. Easily up there with some of the best in Chicago. The other dishes didn't hit as much. The cumin lamb had great flavor but was way too fatty and oily. 4/10. The dry chili chicken had a nice crispy texture but also too oily. 6.5/10. Both weren't very spicy either. Overall, come here for the duck and you'll have a great time.

I was really…read morecraving some good Chinese food but did not want to go into downtown first to pick up and then head back home so I looked this place up and had decent reviews and decided to try it out. What really impressed me was they had a specific section of the menu which was titled "Salt and Pepper". Of course I was super excited to try the salt and pepper tofu so here's what we got: - we got the salt and pepper tofu - we got the American garlic broccoli - got the mala lamb. - Got a pair of complimentary vegetarian spring rolls. When I went to pick up the take-out order, I was shocked at how heavy it was. This was clearly a lot of food. I'll start with the lamb. Very well thought out packaging, to be straight. Because the lamb had a lot of oil and liquid in it, they put it in a plastic container, which they knew is going to leak. They put that entire container in a separate tiny plastic bag and wrapped it so that the juices from that would not come all over in the main bag. Really appreciate that. Now the lamb, while cooked okay, the flavor was just, you know, it did not do it for me. Add to that they really kept the lamb as relatively big pieces. They were thinly sliced but they were just large pieces. They could have been smaller for it to be easier to eat. Flavor-wise there was just too much black pepper, which is what I was expecting, but to match that there was no flavor as such. The salt and pepper tofu was a disaster. I got it from other places. The flavor just was not doing it. It was not crispy at all. Yes I have them take out salt and pepper tofu from many other places. It does leave its crunchiness to some extent. This one had zero crunch. In fact it was weird. Every piece that was stuck to the next one had something gooey on it. Just overall the flavor was very underwhelming. The American garlic broccoli was overcooked to the extent it did not have the firmness one would expect and was overcooked to the extent where some of the smaller pieces just disintegrated. The spring roll is wild. The casing was phenomenal. It was perfect for a spring roll even after opening it after one hour. Really appreciate that. The filling, however, there really weren't many vegetables in it at all. That was very disappointing. Overall I don't think I am going to grab food from here again. The reason they get the 3.5 stars, though, is they did a phenomenal job on the packaging of all the food. The quantity was well beyond what I expected. The food, however, I have to say, was a disaster. And maybe this is my taste. It may be it's a bit too Americanized and I have not been used to eating very Americanized Chinese food for the last many years. That might be the problem.

Tucked into a no-frills corner on the South Side, Dai Yee's looks modest from the outside, but step in after 10 p.m. and it's pure magic. The room is packed with everybody--sneakerheads, nurses coming off shift, club kids, cops, and couples on first dates who somehow heard the legend. The vibe is chaotic in the best way: woks roaring, orders flying, and that unmistakable perfume of sizzling garlic, ginger, and chili filling the air. The food is straight-up stupid good. The Hong Kong-style salt & pepper smelts are crackly, spicy, and gone in 30 seconds. The beef chow fun has that elusive wok hei (breath of the wok) that most places only dream of, wide rice noodles slick with smoky char and tender flank steak. The Singapore noodles are bright curry perfection, and the Mongolian beef is saucy, crispy-edged, and borderline addictive.
