My family and I are visiting Williamsburg and I found Old City Barbecue on Yelp. It was very close to our hotel so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant was pretty busy but we got seated right away. Our waitress was super energetic and nice. We decided to order the 4 meat sampler. It was just for my husband and I so it was enough. We really enjoyed Old City Barbeque. We liked the clean and open design, yet the noise wasn't too loud. We enjoyed everything we ate. The Pork BBQ Sandwich with coleslaw was great, close to traditional expectations but unique with Tidewater BBQ sauce and the coleslaw had just a slight kick. Each taco in the Taco Sampler, ordered with Brisket, Green Chili Brisket, and Pulled Pork, had unique dressings and flavors and was very enjoyable. Lastly we took a Banana Pudding to go and it was out of this world - the best Banana Pudding we've had in a while. Absolutely delicious! We took a family trip to Virginia Beach and had researched the best places to eat. On the way back home we drove through Williamsburg and ate here. It was better than everything we ate in VA Beach and was seriously some of the best barbecue I've ever eaten. We shared everything we got, so I got a taste of many things. Everything was delicious, but for me the standouts were: pork belly, ribs, pulled pork, smoky pablano mac and cheese, and the brisket French dip. The Tidewater barbecue sauce was great as well. Being a pescatarian, I don't typically go to BBQ places, but I was with a group of friends who wanted to go and I was able to find something on the menu, so all was good. They ordered all their meat dishes which everyone seemed to like. They really enjoyed the pork belly. I got the portobello mushroom sandwich that was delicious. Solid choice close to home. More chef-fy than your usually BBQ place. Lots of interesting options. The pork belly kimchi taco is an amazing party of flavors. The beer choices are FANTASTIC. The pulled pork bbq sandwich, though delicious, is too spicy for kids & teens, unfortunately, so our family has to go elsewhere for BBQ most of the time and save this place just for adult date night. Cheese fries app is delicious even though their fries aren't crispy. Arugula salad dressing is sadly too sour...need to add more sweet to balance the flavors....we live very close by and I would go here often just for this salad & extras if they could improve the balance with more sweet...the few tiny candied peanuts are not enough to balance the very sour vinaigrette. Smoked brisket is good but not a fan of the tobacco onions they put on the sandwich. The cornbread is truly terrible and falls apart the second you put it in your mouth into its two components: sand and butter. The whipped honey butter doesn't taste like honey OR butter...more like whipped oleo or margarine. The chocolate pie seems like it was made in a factory. Overall, I wish there were some less-spicy BBQ options for the tween/teen kids so we could make this a regular family spot and hang out here more often as a family. Food was fantastic! Tasted great, ribs were soft and moist, bacon bites were perfect & sweet potato fries were cooked well. Didn't like the flavor of the baked beans but my husband loved them. The dressing for the regular salad was also great (a bit too many pickled onions). The ONLY thing that was not ok for us was the portion size. I laughed so hard at the three teeny tiny little rib bones that were on my plate. Literally not even a full bite of meat on any of them. They did take them back and agreed that there was very little meat and replaced them with two slightly larger pieces that gave me exactly 1.5 bites on each one. We had pulled pork which was delicious and no sauce needed. The brisket was a little dry but had great flavor. The St Lewis cut ribs were our favorite. For sides we had slaw, French fries, Cole slaw and sweet potato fries and all were delicious. I also had the stout beans which were just ok. With only 3 sauces to choose from, the only one I preferred was the vinegar based and my wife didn't like any of the 3. Our server was awesome but the food was slow to come out. Went to this restaurant with a fam group on Taco Tuesday and had.....TACOS lol! I had the 3 Taco Sampler; one brisket, one chicken and one pulled pork. I loved the first two but gave the 3rd to my brother in love. I am Not a slaw eater and asked for it on the side, but slaw I did eat and it was good! I really want to give one star but the food was good. We sat at the bar and my husband order one of the $10.99 bourbon speciality drinks but switched out the bourbon with Jefferson Ocean. The bartender asked if he wanted a double and he said yes. Now imagine our surprise when she delivered the bill and that drink was $32! He had two! So it was $64 for his drinks! This is a bourbon he ordered many times and has never paid that much! Not even at the airport or at our local steakhouse where steaks start at$60! Oh my goodness! I ordered a 2 meat platter with brisket and pork belly, Mac and cheese and collards for sides and cornbread. First of all the tap list has a great local selection. The brisket was tender and delicious. The pork bellies were also on point with flavor, not overly salty like others I've had. The Mac and cheese was good and OMG if those sweet pickles were sold in a mason jar I would have taken a few jars back to CT with me! The greens were tender just a little bit too much of a chili powder flavor for me palette. Corn bread was delicious too. The kicker to this meal was the banana pudding I took to go. Went here for holiday social with co workers. This was by far one of my least favorite Barbecue places. In fact the best thing on the menu was the fried oysters. They were cooked to perfection. Off the beaten path restaurant on a street lined with chain motels. They don't take reservations, but when we arrived the hostess told us an empty booth we wanted was reserved. Interesting. Casual dining space. Service decent. You can order 1, 2, 3, 4, or even 5 types of meat. I had two: ribs and brisket. The ribs were fall off the bone amazing, and the brisket was pretty good although a bit beat-up looking, a bit dry not the best but good. I liked the pickled onion - wish they would provide more than a few slivers. My side was Mac & Cheese (Great!) and Sweet potato waffle fries (crispy outside soft inside - very nice texture combo and flavor). My partner had four types of meat: pulled pork, jerk or shredded) chicken, ribs and brisket. She did not like the pork and chicken (a bit dry and tasteless). She also had beans she said were too sweet (I personally thought tasted odd). If you come the ribs are a must! The portions are small. I would have expected more for the price. But I enjoyed it. There is a tiny lot on one side (which would fool you into thinking there was no parking available if full) but on the other side is a good sized lot. Handicap parking spaces available. There is dining outdoors (or at least seating) for the warmer clients - there was a fire pit on either side of the Old City sign where seating would be. It wasn't open but if not for dining then for those waiting for a table. The BBQ here is dry rub which I prefer over wet BBQ which most of the other BBQ's in the area seemed to be serving. If you have a yearning for BBQ ribs and/or brisket- give this place a try. This is a hands-on dining experience so bring some wet naps :) They do have a roll of paper towels on the table but no wet naps. Sauces on table include BBQ and a mustard base. After a day at Busch gardens we were looking for a fun spot to grab a late lunch/early dinner. Will say we were disappointed by the atmosphere in here. It's a cool building and pretty busy but it was awkwardly quiet and just a weird vibe overall. Food was pretty good and generous portions, and a decent beer selection. Came here on a Sunday afternoon around 4:30pm. Was greeted immediately upon entering and seated at a high top table near the bar (by choice) so we could watch the Football games. They have 4-5 flat screen TVs around the bar (no audio) but at least you're able to watch each play. They have a drink menu and I ordered one of there specialty cocktail my boyfriend Victor went with an Old Fashion. The bartender Juan was our server and did an awesome job mixing our drinks and tending to our table. For starters we ordered the Fried green tomatoes, I must say these are very different from the fried green tomatoes we're used to however they were very tasty- served with bacon and roasted red onion jam and pimento cheese. My boyfriend went with "The Big Hal" w/ a side of garlic Mac cheese and I ordered the smoked brisket and pork chili served w/ cornbread and honey butter for entrées. We also decided to try their smoke and fried wings. Everything was delicious. I have not ate a good Mac and cheese from a restaurant in a really long time and todays side orders of poblano Mac n cheese and garlic Mac and cheese did not disappoint. They had super friendly staff, well kept dining area, I would definitely return back again. They seem to do a lot with pork belly as you find it mentioned on their menu multiple times in different dishes. Typically barbecue restaurants go more rustic with picnic bench seating but Old City's dining room was very comfortable and clean. I've had lots of pork belly in my days but the pork belly appetizer should be considered candy. It was sweet, a little crispy but maintained the pork's fattiness. I didn't want to stop eating it. The brisket was tender and the ribs practically slid off the bones. I'm not a big dessert eater but the banana pudding was phenomenal and like nothing I've ever had before. I appreciated that they leave the barbecue sauces, silverware and paper towels on the table. I'm a bit of a messy eater (but it's barbecue, so who isn't?) so it's nice to not have to bother the staff every 5 min for more napkins to wipe my sauced-up hands. read more
