I already knew through my experiences here with my late Lulu that Old Derby is the best - but really, they're the absolute best. You simply can't do better anywhere. I say with certainty after bringing Lulu here as a patient for checkups and diagnosing a serious health condition; after boarding her for multiple staycations (about 4 weeks in total); and after finally bringing her here to cross the Rainbow Bridge when it was time. She took a sharp downward turn, I made the decision and the staff was there for her, and for me. From the check-in at the front desk to Dr. Burke and his nurse we were treated with care, kindness and empathy. My sweet girl crossed gently. with dignity, and throughout the entire visit I also was treated kindly and thoughtfully. A handwritten condolence card arrived a few days later, acknowledging my loss, which still makes me tear up every time I look at it. When I'm ready - I don't know when that will be, but when I'm ready - my next best friend will be treated here too. read more

I can't say enough for Old Derby. EVERYONE...the vets, the techs and the office staff are wonderful. I have been a client for as far back as I can remember. I have a dog with a seizure disorder and Dr. Kimball comes out to my car to sedate her so I can bring her in without a seizure. Dr. Gorski has been my vet for 20+ years. She has an intuitive sense about what is going on with an animal and treats appropriately. The Inn and grooming are also wonderful. They truly care about my kitties and dog and I can tell that they interact with them because they know their personalities so well. She was so warm, compassionate, and helpful. Any fears I had, she calmed. I have experienced great care for my kitties at old derby animal hospital. Both vets seem to genuinely like cats and took special interest in my Maine coon boy, who I brought in as a kitten and has been seen there ever since. When he was neutered dr. Kimball worked with me to accommodate some of my concerns, and the staff was patient and kind with my many worried kitty mom questions. I very much appreciated the tech assistant making a follow up call to check on him. My only complaints are the costs, which would be great if lower, and the shrinking waiting room. My cats are stressed by the visit process and barking rambunctious dogs (which is also heard in exam rooms, and really freaked my cat out) add to their distress. Thought we needed care so I got this name from local apps, it's located in a upscale area so this seemed reasonable, now I feel nothing but regret. First, they charged me around $70 to make the appointment which I thought was very strange, it was a red flag but they said its because of lots of cancellations so I did it anyway. The visit then cost around another $700 for an old pet and I wasn't told much more than to get a same day scan test that runs around another $1400, no warnings though. 72 hours later it was a family nightmare and 24 hours after that I needed to pay about $400 more to another place & my pet was gone over for something that was said to be audible at another facility. Could have told me up front what seemed to be happening and prevented a nightmare instead of holding out for me to get that 1400 test. read more

I cannot say enough great things about Old Derby in such a short period of time that we've been going there!! In August, one of our dogs had suddenly stopped eating. The vet we normally took our dogs to didn't take our concerns seriously. I knew something was seriously wrong with her so I decided to get a second opinion. Multiple people told us to take her to Old Derby because of how great of experiences they had with Old Derby in the past. We met with Dr. Pattillo and she knew immediately that something was seriously wrong with our dog. She did everything she could, provided us with some answers and referred us to the Angell in Boston so they could watch her overnight. Unfortunately, our dog had a very aggressive cancer that did not have good survival rate. So we took her back to Old Derby to have her put to sleep. Dr. Patillo was with us through the entire process. We couldn't have asked for a better vet to take care of us through such a hard time! I really appreciated her being up front about everything and she was very empathetic. Even when we went to pick up her ashes, we were late getting there from work so they were getting ready to lock up. The woman that was locking up went back in to get her ashes so we didn't have to come back another day. I also mentioned that we have another dog, he was having the hardest time without his sister and was having serious anxiety/depression issues. When his symptoms started getting worse, we took him to Old Derby to get checked out. This time, we saw Dr. Kimball and he was extremely helpful. Now, our dog is back to his normal self! Again, thank you so much Old Derby Animal Hospital. The entire staff is wonderful and I'm so glad that we have found such an amazing place to take care of our dog and future dogs/animals!! read more

I need to update this review because Old Derby saved my dog Flynn's life. Literally. Dr. Jennifer Greenwood, in particular (though all of the Dr's here are terrific). We noticed some weird bruises on Flynn's abdomen and we were concerned, but not overly concerned. We brought him in and found out it was really serious. Life threateningly serious, in fact. He had developed ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopemia) which is an auto-immune disease that causes low platelets. If left untreated, Flynn would have most likely bled to death internally. It's not an easy diagnosis to make and a lot of other possibilities were considered and ruled out (i.e., was he exposed to rat poisoning, was it a tick-born illness, cancer) but due to her dedication and experience, Dr. Greenwood was able to correctly diagnose and ultimately save Flynn. I will admit that since Old Derby is in Hingham and not Boston and this was a matter of life and death, I wanted a second opinion. So, I took him to Angell Memorial Hospital (I also need to update my review of them as well because Dr. Meg Whalen was amazing) and they assured me that they felt Old Derby handled Flynn's case really well and they made me feel confident about Flynn's care at Old Derby. Flynn's alive, almost 3 months later, with a disease that doesn't always result in such a positive outcome and we have Old Derby Animal Hospital to thank for that. read more

I absolutely love Old Derby Animal Hospital. Everyone from the front desk, to technicians, to doctors themselves are overly helpful, genuinely interested in the well being in your animal, and you leave feeling very good about the service you receive. Both my husband and I grew up with pets, but 4 years ago we bought our very first puppy together! We researched vet's in the area, and although this one was the closest, Old Derby Animal Hospital had the best reviews. Although I love it there, I can almost always get a same day appointment if something happens, the only CON is that they are QUITE pricey! Some of their fees make me question them sometimes. I hardly get out of there even for a checkup without spending at least $300! Coming from a small town in upstate New York, where pets are seldom brought to the vet, this was a difficult transition! However, since it is our first, we want the best! I don't know if we will bring our furbabies there after we have more, but who knows! I still recommend it highly! Second tip- although we were hesitant bringing our pup to training classes as we both grew up with dogs, we decided to do it anyways as we felt we both could learn a few things. BOY am I glad we did. Our dog, is a lab, and we get told all the time how well behaved and trained he is. I owe a lot of that to Old derby! I wish I could remember the name of the person who did the classes, but if you ask the hospital, I think its the ONLY one they recommend! read more

The love of our lives; our English Lab named Enzo became critically ill suddenly at the end of October. Dr. Lauren Poganik managed his care. She was knowledgeable, kind and caring. Unfortunately we had to make the agonizing decision to let Enzo go to sleep and brought him to Old Derby on Wednesday November 3rd. Old Derby has a beautifully appointed comfort room with a soft bed on the floor. Enzo passed peacefully and comfortably under Dr. Lauren's care. Even though it was incredibly difficult it was somehow beautiful at the same time. They allowed us to stay with him as long as we needed to. A week later they called to let us know that Enzo's ashes were ready for pick-up. I was so impressed with the staff at the desk who gave their condolences and when the woman came out with Enzo she walked around the desk to hand him to me rather than passing the bag across the counter. This was such a small gesture but an important and kind one. In the bag there was a clay paw print of Enzo with instructions for baking it along with a vial with some of his fur. They also included a packet of perennial flower seeds to plant in our yard which is such a nice touch and so appreciated. So; thank you Old Derby Animal Hospital. I'll be forever grateful for the excellent care Enzo received since we first brought him for care at 6 months old to the last moments of his life. My husband and I have been boarding our furry baby, George at the Inn at Old Derby , part of the Old Derby Animal Hospital, for almost two years. The facility is super clean with a very professional and loving staff. One of the major advantages of the place is that if God forbid, your dog/cat is not feeling well while being boarded, there is a great staff of vets that can check them out. Our George had some eye surgery that we didn't plan on happening until after a planned vacation. We couldn't cancel and were concerned about leaving her but we called the Inn and they didn't blink an eye :). They diligently gave her the necessary eye drops and make sure that the area was clean. When we picked her up, she was in great shape. If you are on the south shore and are looking for top notch boarding for your furry loved one, look no further than the Inn at Old Derby. read more

In terms of professionalism, knowledgeable staff, wait times, scheduling, ect...this vet clinic is very good. However, when it comes to prices---I never leave the place without paying at least $150 each visit (that has been literally the lowest amount I pay). I admit that I do not know the costs comparisions to other vet clinics so perhaps this is normal---although, after my last bill and being a little strapped for money, I am currently looking to go to other vet clinics to see if I can find a bit cheaper vet bills. Otherwise, if you have money and do not mind the costs of vet bills AND you have a great staff that is extremely friendly and knowledgeable---this is a very good place. read more

My wife and I recently moved to the area... thank you to Yelp for helping us find Old Derby Animal Hospital. We've taken both of our dogs to this facility, but we had a problem that was handled with excellent care. Our youngest dog received a chemical burn (we believe from a local groomer). We were unaware of the severity of the burn because it was difficult to see under her fur. The vets at Old Derby nursed her back to a full recovery. The vets followed up numerous times to check on her status and made multiple recommendations for additional care to help her with this painful injury. She's back normal and we only have the staff at Old Derby to thank. Thank you so much for providing excellent care for our dogs!!! We'll be back (hopefully not too soon...)!!! read more

i have two female min pins. about 7 lbs each. somehow, between shots, food, frontline, heartworm chews and one spay, i spent $2400 there in one year. i haven't spend that much for my horse. i had made an appointment for the girls to have a nail trim, and after 45 minutes past the appointment time, they finally called me in. took five minutes and they charged me for two appointments and two $15 nail trims. what a great way to treat loyal customers! i wont ever go there again, and have since found south shore animal in weymouth and they are fantastic! read more

After my dog suffered with mange for 6 months and was treated for allergies by another local veterinary practice, I decided to switch my pets over to Old Derby. It was one of the best decision that I've made. Everyone was professional, polite, efficient, very accommodating, and not overwhelmed as my previous practice had been. My dog had a full exam and then a nail trim which is usually a very stressful experience for him. I've never had him returned to me so calm. He was not traumatized in the least. While waiting a few minutes for the Old Derby office staff to bill my insurance (which had never been I offered at my previous practice), one of the technicians took my dog out for a urine sample so I wouldn't have to do it at home. A few minutes later, our insurance responded and I ended up paying a minimal fee for the visit. Old Derby also has a app that allows you to schedule appointments, and buy food and medication, and the best part is that you earn point that lead to discounts. My only regret is not taking my pets to Old Derby sooner! read more

Every vet gives honest answers and strives to do whatever is best for the animal. I don't trust many people with my dogs and cat, but I truly believe every person there genuinely cares. The doctors and nurses take as much time as necessary to answer all my questions (and I know some of them are a little crazy) and call me back in a timely manor. Amazing care!! We changed from our long term vet to Old Derby at the suggestion of a friend. We saw Dr Vagliano for new patient visits for each of our dogs and she spent 45 minutes with each dog. Very thorough, patient, we felt that we had plenty of time to ask questions. She made several follow up calls to inquire about existing concerns. Sadly our older dog was diagnosed with a serious illness (missed by our previous vet) but I have confidence in their diagnosis and treatment plan. The poor pup also needed surgery to remove a large lump which the other vet knew about but didn't treat. With all this being said we have not felt at all pressured into any treatments. The vets understand financial constraints and have given us estimates to take home so that we could make plans for treatment. The vets, vet techs and front desk staff have all been great. read more

I have been going to Old Derby for at least 8 years and would never go anywhere else! They helped care for my elderly cat when she was sick and just kept getting sicker. Dr. Warendorf has always been very helpful, and caring which makes it easier when at a vets office with a sick pet. I now have two 4 yr old cats and am happy to say I still go to old derby and I still see Dr. Warendorf. One of my cats has bladder stones that are recurring, as stressful as it is when she has the symptoms, I know that my vet and his staff will do everything to accommodate me to make things easier. My cat has needed surgery numerous times and after all visits, the staff calls to see how she is doing. They are all very nice people. I have and would recommend Old Derby to anyone! read more

I bring my dog (and sometimes my cat) for boarding. This place is the best!! Hands down!! They have big kennels, with tile floors and glass doors. very clean. They will let you tour any time they are open. The staff is awesome. They are so friendly, so nice, and super helpful. I wouldn't bring my dog anywhere else. They do get a little crowded on the weekends in the summer, but if you plan a couple weeks in advance, you should be all set. (it really does look exactly like the pictures on their website!) the vet is good too, I brought my cat once, so I could board her. My dog I bring to a vet that's a little closer to home as we go a little more often. read more
