I really really love this place. We stumbled upon this restaurant by accident but boy am I glad that we did. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere. It just feels like history with the dark wood and leather seats. They under promised and over delivered right off the bat as we were given a 20 minute timeframe to be seated but it was actually 5 mins( score 10 points ). I ordered the meatloaf( which I never do) but it was bacon crusted and yummy with mashed potatoes. My bf got a burger and it looked amazing. It has jalapenos and bacon and looked juicy and marvelous and it must've been good because he didn't talk to me while he was eating. This place is definitely a touristy spot with the benefit of actually having good food (albeit with touristy prices). The wait on a Sat late afternoon wasn't that long, maybe a 20 min wait, but decided to sit at the bar since there were open seats. I ordered an iced tea and the fried chicken and waffles. The bartender said it was really good and they smoked the maple syrup for 8 hrs. This dish was pretty pricey at $17, but decided to go for it anyway. The dish ended up being really delicious. The smokey maple syrup was so unique and totally made the dish and the fried chicken was perfectly crisp and seasoned. This is our third visit in three days, but I am finally writing a review to sum up the experiences. We had an awesome first experience when our server paid special attention to my boyfriend's crustacean (shrimp, crab, lobster) allergy. However, on the second day, our server was reluctant to note his allergies and insisted that we did not order any oysters when all we came for was oysters... We did not return that night and had oysters elsewhere because I was turned off by how insistent that server was for us not to order oysters... On top of her poor service, we received a dozen of the SAME oysters when I had specified that we wanted variety. We came back for dinner on the third day because the oysters really are the best and freshest here. We came in to find out that it would be an hour for a table, but could seat ourselves at the bar. I was kind of disappointed because it was packed. We made it just in time for the raw bar's happy hour (3-6 PM) and our server, Arsalan, hurried to put our order of 2 dozen oysters & clams in at 5:59 PM -- much appreciated as it is 50% off during happy hour! To our delight, a VARIETY of oysters came out unlike the second experience we had here at Old Ebbit Grill. We also ordered a Ruben and chicken fettuccini this time. This was my first Ruben and it exceeded all expectations; I have never had better sauerkraut or a meatier sandwich. The chicken fettuccini had lots of fresh corn in it. Arsalan is definitely one of the best servers we've had because he was so engaging and friendly. Old Ebbitt is a DC institution and always a solid choice across the board. I've been here many times throughout many stages of my life: as a tourist when I was a kid, then as a college student in DC, and then as an "adult" (always a kid at heart) working at a law firm across the street. As a regular here's my summary: Reservations: When in doubt, make them in advance. The wait can get really long here even during off times. During those times just getting through the archaic revolving door past the droves of people and to the front desk to get your name on a list can take 20 minutes. Plan ahead! Brunch AND Breakfast: Yes! They have both! Their classic Eggs Benedict is by far my favorite in DC. They offer a few different versions during both breakfast on weekdays and brunch on weekends. Dinner: Their cheeseburger is (again) one of my favorites in DC. Chicken #1 sandwich is a close second. Carry Out: Super quick and a great option if you're staying in a hotel nearby and don't want to wait for a table. If you call in your order be sure to pay attention to which bar they tell you to come to when picking up your order. There's a few bars here (oyster bar, main bar, corner bar) and the bartenders take the orders. While carryout is quick, if you're not paying attention, you may end up with cold food because you spent ten minutes in line waiting for your food at the wrong bar. Hours: They're basically open all the time. Not 24 hours but close to it. The kitchen is open for dinner until midnight and remain open until 1am with a limited Late Night menu. Definitely a huge plus in this part of town where restaurants have off hours especially on weekends. read more

Located right near the White House!!!! This restaurant has deep historic meaning as one of DC's oldest restaurant! It not only was a place for former US presidents, it is a great place for business congressmen type meetings, politics, journalists and even ordinary tourists like me to dine at! Thank goodness I made reservations because even on a Wednesday night, this place was packed! The environment is sorta dim atmosphere (giving it an old feel) with mahogany all around with velvet booths! Love the booths because they even have little coat hangers! Politics tend to wear those pea coats and trench coats so it's perfect. One incident that happened when I first got there, was I ran into a waiter and knocked over all his cups that he was holding! I felt so bad and embarrassed, but he was super kind and not upset at all. We came here with our friends since of them suggested this place. Our waitress seemed a bit snooty! She had such attitude and was sorta nice at the same time it was weird..... Anyway this place is known for their reasonably priced, amaze-tasting seafood. I got the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake in the single. You could order a double, but one crab cake was enough for me. BEST TASTING CRAB CAKE ever. It was perfect and not too crabby! They use ALL REAL crab (sometimes the canned crab gets a gross crabby taste). It comes with corn and potatoes. The corn was fresh from the cobb too! YUMS. I must say a legit tasting crab cake dish for $14? that is a pretty good deal. The boy got the Maine Lobster and that was only $19! Really good deal considering it is lobster AND they give you such a big juicy WHOLE lobster! In CA, you could probably expect to pay $34 for a "decent" lobster. Loved how the lobster was vibrant in its coral-red color. The meat inside was super tender, cooked to perfection. They give you coleslaw and fries too. Our other friends basically got the same thing as us so I didn't get to try more of their wonderful foods. Old Ebbitt is so AWESOME I wish we had one here. The online menu is a little misleading because it does not say they serve burgers and other sandwiches during dinner which when you are traveling with kids is a must. Last time I visited DC we decided to go big and visit 4 restaurants and the National Zoo in only 8 hours. Old Ebbitt Grill was our third stop in DC and we had never been so thankful to have reservations in our life. The line for Old Ebbitt Grill was out the door and thanks to our OpenTable reservations we only waited 10 min. After already hitting up ShopHouse and GBD Fried Chicken & Doughnuts we had to dig deep down into our hunger reserves to clear space for an amazing dinner. Old Ebbitt Grill is the oldest restaurant in DC and one of the Oldest Restaurants in America. With its legendary history and diverse menu it was an easy pick for ending our day in DC.... well almost, we hit up Baked & Wired right after but that was just for a quick sweet tooth fix before leaving DC for good. Ella got the Pumpkin Ravioli with sherried onions, roasted butternut squash, wilted Swiss Chard, and cranberry-sage butter. She really liked how sweet the pumpkin was and how it blended well with the tartness of the cranberry-sage butter. Anyone that knows me knows I DONT EAT SEAFOOD... but for some reason I was feeling extra adventurous tonight and couldn't stop eyeing the Grilled Atlantic Swordfish with tomato confit, sautéed spinach, potato croquette, and arugula pesto. It may be the biggest cliché in the world but for my first experience with Swordfish it taste just like chicken. The taste, texture, aroma, it was all chicken and I loved every single last bite of it. The best thing on the plate wasn't the Swordfish though... it was the tomato confit with the potato croquette. Those two flavors swimming around in my mouth were the best in DC and the only thing I've ever eaten that came close was dinner night at our (chef) friends house :) Old Ebbitt Grill has been around for over 100 years and won't likely be going anywhere in the next 100 years. I have tried the 11:00 p.m. Happy hour on several occasions and it never disappoints. Gather up a few friends and order the Orca! Three bars to choose from. I like the one closest to the shucking action. Pair the Orca with your favorite adult beverage and indulge. After all, is that not why you go to the gym? The Orca will come with lobster, crab, oysters, shrimp and clams. Several dipping sauces to choose from. My friend was not a big fan of raw clams so the bartender graciously substituted more oysters for us. Came here after my family (a party of 15; 5 kids under 10 and 10 adults) took a tour of the White House. (Sidebar - if you ever wondered if the floral arrangements at 1600 Penn were legit, they are. But that's a story for another day.) We had a reservation for 1:00 pm, but the staff were kind enough to seat us all around 12:40. Trey was our server & he was top notch. Super personable, excellent memory, and gave great suggestions. He was able to convince my uncle to have a side kale salad (and he's the definition of Mr. Meat and Potatoes) with his burger. They had their brunch menu available (brunch is from open to 4:30, a very nice plus!). I ordered a Moscow Mule & a grilled chicken sandwich. My drink was strong & full of ginger, which I love. The chicken sandwich was good; definitely juicy and cooked well, but some more seasoning would have elevated the sandwich that much more. The amount of food served was worth the $16 it cost. The food came out in a fair amount of time, considering the size of our crowd & the overall crowd of the restaurant (a Saturday brunch/lunch crowd) - we didn't have many modifications to make to our order, either. My mom ordered a smoked salmon Benedict, but didn't realize that the fish would be raw (in appearance, not in preparation), but they were able to switch her order out for grilled salmon and French fries. They even brought out applesauce for the smallest of our crew (11 months & 16 months, respectively), but the 16 month old was just as happy with the pile of French fries on my plate.
