Definitely 5 stars! I took hubby here for his bday last night, and very glad I did!! ...the atmosphere is rustic but elegant, cozy and romantic..the staff was attentitive and very professional. Great service!...I ordered a margarita to start, and I know a good margarita; this was a good marg!! Lol...now to the food, we started with fried calamari-great!..I ordered the fish and chips-excellent. Served properly with malt vinegar on the side! ...husband ordered the special; hanger steak, he subbed out the mash for the steak fries..also comes with green beans which were so tasty! We both loved are meals and will definitely be returning. We got there around 5:30 so it wasn't crowded yet, by the time we were all done about 7, the place was getting packed ..so if you don't want a long wait and a more mellow atmosphere, go a little early. Not a family friendly place. No kids menu. Only option is to order a side of fries, or Mac & cheese (I wouldn't recommend this for kids). Service was slow, but friendly. Food: their signature dish, a marinated flat iron steak, little flavor, nothing special. Fish & Chips was decent. The braised short ribs were a terrible disappointment. I had been a fan of Old Fields since I first went to the Greenlawn location over a decade ago- particularly for the crispy fried onion strings. But over the last few years the onions at the Port Jeff location have been getting consistently colder, greasier and less appetizing. Last time I was there the onions were barely even warm when served and basically ice cold after the first two bites of the burger. They're also just not as good as they used to be. Even on the rare occasion when they are above luke warm. I was last there on March 25th, 2019. I had a few pieces of fried calamari (they were actually really delicious and the reason for the 2 stars instead of 1) a cheese burger and some cold onion strings. The burger was alright but I only ate about a quarter of the cold, grease strings. Later that night I got violently ill. After laying awake feeling nauseous for what felt like hours, I headed to the bathroom where I proceeded to retch a total of 9 times. I rarely throw up and couldn't remember the last time I threw up that bad. I was ill for another few days and had a lasting sore throat from the vomiting. Oh and last summer the bartender with the beard tried over charging me for a classic burger with cheddar and bleu cheese- $19 for the burger on the on bill. I did the math, even at $3 for the extra cheese the $12.99 burger should have been $16 tops. Argued with me when I brought it up. This last vomit fest sealed the deal- I will not be returning. read more

Went to Old Fields last night, we both ordered the burgers ( medium ) and man ol man were they good. The waiter came over as we were in the middle of eating and asked how everything was going. I said we ordered medium cooked burgers, he said yeah, I said well they are actually medium cooked. He looked confused, I said do you know how many times we've gone out and ordered burgers only to find that there is no pink anywhere to be found and they are over cooked and dry? We have gone to Old Fields for lunch outdoors during the COVID pandemic four or five times and really enjoy it every time. The fact that this little gem is hidden away from the Port Jeff craziness makes us more calm as we like to keep social distancing and there aren't a lot of customers on a typical Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I came here for my birthday a couple of weeks ago and I was very happy with my selection. I was shocked that I never saw or heard of Old Fields beforehand, even though I'm Down Port at least two times a week. Thanks to Yelp I was able to find a bunch of new places to try. I walked in and I loved the decor, they had a chalkboard in the front that had the next train and ferry times (which I think is the most helpful think I've ever seen, even if I wasn't in need of either the train or the ferry this time - great for visitors!) Everything just seemed very "my style" from the moment I walked in and for that, I was already really happy with everything. We sat in a booth and it was a little small for the larger of the group but it was nice and cozy. It felt like we were having our own dinner instead of being in the same place with other families. The drink menu had variety and even offered a drink made with Pimms (gin), which I never really see in American bars. I studied abroad in London and they drink Pimms a lot so it was very nostalgic for me and I was excited to get a drink with Pimms - not that this is relevant but I just had to share. The menu had everything from spinach dip to burgers to seafood - my family tried some of everything. I had a burger with cheddar and bacon, my mom had a lobster roll, my aunt had crab cakes, and my boyfriend had a burger that was in between two grilled cheese sandwiches (and they put cheese on the actual burger). We were all thrilled with our meals that we even got dessert. I had a smores type thing in a mason jar that was amazing! If you want to rate this place on service and the temperature on the steaks then I'd say 5 stars. But when you can't use salt and pepper to season things it becomes a 2. Lets hit the basics: Crab Cake - Bland NE Clam Chowder - Loose and Bland Ribeye - Bland I will admit the marinated skirt steak had a bit of flavor on the marinade, but even that was missing basic seasoning. First time here and WOW this place is incredible. We started out with the Spin Dip which comes with warm pita chips, so good! For an entree, I had the flat iron steak and O M G it had to have been one of the best steaks I've ever had. It was cooked perfectly, and the marinade complemented the flavor of the meat very well. Really good food, although I'm not sure if the price matches the food plus experience. The service was a bit slow, and mistakes were made that had to be corrected. We were there during lunch and there wasn't many other patrons, I've noticed that some restaurants struggle when there's not a rush that may have contributed to the pace. The menu is small, due to Covid I'm assuming, but enough options to suit anyone. We ordered the cod fritters as our app, Birria tacos & fried chicken as our entrees and the s'mores dessert. Let me start of by saying our waiter Franco was amazing. Usually with my recent outdoor seating experiences the waitstaff hasn't been attentive. Franco was on the ball with everything. From his taco suggestion to making sure our glasses were never empty he was your ideal waiter. The cod fritters were delicious, not too fishy and the dipping sauce they came with paired perfectly. This is the perfect app for 2 maybe 3 people. I got the Birria tacos and although I thought the pulled pork had too strong of a taste, I'd probably try the grilled shrimp ones next time. My boyfriend got the fried chicken and we were blown away. First off the portion is HUGE. So much chicken!! For $21 you get a heap ton of chicken, a deliciously warm biscuit, fries and mashed potatoes. This is so worth the price. For dessert we got the s'mores sundae and it was the perfect portion for 2. Warm brownie at the bottom, delicious marshmallow & ice cream on top. I definitely suggest it. Overall the price for dinner for 2 wasn't bad at all. My wife & I went to the Port Jeff Ice Festival yesterday & decided to get dinner at Old Fields restaurant for the first time. There were a million people there & even though the wait was long, the manager Jillian was super accommodating & even bought us each a nice glass of wine & thanked us for our patience. When we were finally seated for dinner, Franco was our server & he was quick & attentive. We had a delicious dinner & are super happy with how wonderful & caring this staff is. It was Saturday night and my fiancé really wanted a steak. We had plans to go out to dinner but we really weren't sure where to go. After debating for a bit, we decided to try someplace new. Off to Old Fields we went . . . I called ahead to try and make a reservation, but they said they didn't take reservations for parties of 2. So, we arrived around 7:30pm and put our name on their list. We waited about an hour and were finally seated outside. The ambiance was really nice. It was decorated for Fall with mums and pumpkins (I wish I took pictures). But, it was a little too cold, especially with the breeze. Other tables around us went to their cars for coats. We didn't have that option. We had dressed to be in doors and left our jackets at home. My fiancé ordered the onion soup to start. He really enjoyed it. I ordered the muscles. The portion size was large. But, they were full of sand:(. My fiancé tried them and almost chipped a tooth. I should have sent them back. But, I always feel bad doing that. For our entrees, my fiancé ordered the marinated skirt steak. He was happy with it. He said it hit the spot. So, that made me happy. I ordered a classic burger. It was good, but nothing special. I had high hopes for this place but I really wasn't impressed. I think Ruvo is a much better option, directly across the way. 3 stars because I loved the ambiance and my fiancé enjoyed his meal, which is what lead us here to begin with. This place is not the same anymore. Food is still tasty but service level is terrible now. We went for a late dinner for NYE. The food is the only reason why they get 2 stars instead of 1. Maybe it's the difference between when Rory is around to keep an eye on things and when he is not there? Our first problem was when our waitress did not come to tell us that kitchen has closed earlier than we were told. We were actually proactive. As soon as we sat down, since it was a late dinner, we asked what time they close the kitchen. She said 11:30. Then at 11:10, when I asked for a few more slices of (grilled) bread, she told me that they closed the kitchen and the grill is off. Wait, shouldn't you have come to told us and ask for last call orders? Since when is it the norm to not tell customers and just close the kitchen earlier than told? She definitely was walking about the floor for a while before I stopped her to ask for bread so she clearly didn't make any effort to come and tell us. What's even funnier is that at about 11:42, about 6 different warm dishes kept coming out from the kitchen for a different table. Really??? You don't think I would notice that? After being rejected for simple few slices of bread, looking at 6 different full warm entree dishes coming out 20 minutes after your kitchen supposedly closed? I would love to know what happened. Our issue number 2 was when I wanted to wrap up the left overs of my 'Bacon Slab' appetizer dish and asked for the sauces that came with it, that was an issue. This is when my husband finally said something. After a few minutes, a manager came over and with the sauces but really??? What was that about? I never remember being any request being this problematic in this restaurant, when Rory was around. I remember Old Fields as having exceptional level of service and always taking that extra step to make customers happy. Apparently not anymore. I'm still not sure if we witnessed the decline of this place or if it was just Rory's absence. Either way, it's unfortunate because we probably won't go back. read more

I wanted to love this place but I don't. I do like it though. I'll list the positives first: their entrees are fantastic. Fresh fish prepared perfectly, large portion steaks, and I had the short rib with mushroom truffle risotto and it was totally fab. Nice large portion sizes too, even on the sides and veggies. Here are my negatives: Their drink menu is too weird. I tried 5 speciality drinks (we were a large group) and they all sucked. I just gave up and ordered a screwdriver. Even their wine menu just doesn't have a large enough selection of wines by the glass. Apps were ok- they have the standard calamari and crab cakes but if you want to try something interesting get the Mac and Cheese. It's got some tasty kick of sage in it. The chicken with biscuits were only 50/50 good. Chicken- amazing. Biscuit- hard and burnt. Dessert was good. Try the s'mores brownie. I had a apple tart with berries and added ice cream and it was pretty good. The icebox cake is to be passed on. Make it at home, you can make a whole cake for the cost of a slice. Lastly the staff and settings were 5 star. Good people working for this establishment. Go there for a steak and a beer and don't get a doggie bag in order to save room for dessert. "A hidden gem on Long Island" as another reviewer has kindly stated couldn't be more true. This is the type of restaurant and experience that I will hopefully never have to miss. My first experience with Old Fields was in Greenlawn which was a good experience but I was attending a small party and didn't get to really sit down and go through things with the staff. The experience alone though was enough for me to try the one in Port Jeff out and has now become a staple/"secret weapon" of sorts. I grew up in Nassau County and will bring friends from out there here and have never had a lackluster experience yet. I really love the aesthetic and look of the place itself, and the well managed wait staff, busers, and bartenders lend to a pleasant experience. The cocktail menu if replaced by any mainstream restaurant could be a GAME CHANGER. The classics and modern day mixes really gives old and young something to choose from and love. Oh yeah, and they are actually made to price point and I'm not in Manhattan buying $14 watered down cocktails. Silly me. Food? Choose anything and be wow'ed. I don't say it too often and HARDLY ever say this in any other review but I could probably name on one hand less then 3 things that didn't totally wow me here and I've tried out most of the menu. It would just be easier to say the thing that I liked the least and it was... the chicken and waffles. Everything else though go for it. This literally is one of my favorite places to get a steak and they cook it to perfection to spec. I'm reading other reviews here where complaints are about no reservations - which technically isn't true, you need a party over 6 (common rule) and complaints on wait time? Seriously? You live on Long Island and you probably tried to come here at 7 PM on a Fri/Sat... I've never waited longer for a table of 2-3 people for longer then 30 mins. It's usually a good sign when a restaurant business is overcapacity... The past two times I've come here, they've messed something up. They "lost" our reservation for 6 people last Saturday night, forgot to bring us menus, and forgot our dessert at the end of the meal. BUT the service here is *always* *always* impeccable and professional. They fix every problem immediately and with a smile. We scored a bunch of complimentary cocktail tickets, and the dessert was on the house. The hostess who helped us get our party seated when there was no reservation in the books never made us feel once like it was a hassle (though I know it was) and managed to seat us within 10 minutes of our original reservation time. And the food is AWESOME. I wish they had better salad options, but the roasted chicken, french onion soup, and burgers (that side salad is on point) are always top notch. My fiancé and I try to go out for a nice dinner once a week. We have compiled a list of some of our favorite high end restaurants but decided to try something new to us last night. Old Fields is what we landed on. I will start by saying the ambience and service were equally impressive. The issue is the kitchen. This included both the procurement of product as well as food preparation. We started with shrimp cocktail and oysters. I've seen shrimp as small as the ones we got but I've never seen blue point oysters that small. They were literally the size of little neck clams. My fiancé had one of the "specials" petite filet with shrimp and scallops ($72). We asked for it with no sauce. The shrimp and scallops, while tiny, were flavored well. The filet was just that, filet. Literally butchered, trimmed, grilled, and plated. Not one bit of seasoning on it. Not even salt and pepper. The Brussels sprouts were tiny and very bitter. We ordered a side of "roasted corn" and it came to the table as a corn, pepper, and zucchini medley. That's not acceptable for roasted corn and again it was bland and flavorless. I ordered the skirt steak. It was the best thing we had on the table last night. The mashed potatoes were not good though. They were very lumpy and not flavorful. On the way back to my truck we said that the service was great but we prepare better food ourselves (and trust me we're not chefs). We enjoyed ourselves just simply by being out with each other but we really didn't enjoy the food. It's a one and done for us as we will not return. The reality is that cost of goods have increased. A formula for success and keeping your head above water is to raise your prices which you did. Unfortunately, a formula for failure is buying lesser quality products and still raising prices. Love this place. After the old Pace's closed, it was nice to see the owners of Old Fields spruce up the interior of this restaurant. I love the look and feel here, it's warm and cozy and overall very nice. I've had numerous dishes here but absolutely love the ahi tuna burger as well as the turkey burger. The tuna burger is always prepared perfectly, not over cooked like you'll sometimes find at other places. Their shrimp and grits is also awesome, and my boyfriend never stops raving about their Sunday special fried chicken. They've got a good selection of beers and mixed drinks; this is a nice place to sit down for a late night beverage if you don't want to brave the crowds at a place like Spycoast. The thing that Old Fields really gets right is the service. The waiters/waitresses and bartenders are over the top friendly and go above and beyond to give good service. We came for last night for dinner , but have been here a number of times before. This happens to be one of our favorite restaurant. We ordered the spinach dip for the table and my husband had the shrimp and grits for his appetizer. Both we perfect. For main course I ordered Daves chicken. I loved it but seemed to get full very fast. My husband and daughter had steak. When they were delivered to the table our waitress who by the way was awesome, asked them to cut into the center to make sure it was to their liking. Both were cooked perfectly. The rest of table had burgers and the chicken nuggets and fries. All were excellent. Each one of us took some of our meals home which is perfect for lunch today!! We all got there on time. Ordered our Appetizers- the spinach dip was good but the wings were awfully spicy. Then our food came out- a little late but they brang my fiancé out the wrong dish!! So now everyone has their food except for him. NOBODY at the table liked their meals. In fact, everyone hated their meal sorry to say. Finally 15 minutes later his dish arrived. Upset nobody was eating their food-I decided to pull aside my waitress after waiting in the hallway for 10 minutes. Telling her what had happened. And believe me..I really don't like complaining/ she proceeded to try and make things right. Telling me we could order something else. Or bring desserts. I agreed- then I went to sit down and NOBODY came. Leaving us HANGING-Frustrated, I walked over to her and asked why nobody had tried to make things right ? Port Jeff is a friendly seaside down. I know port Jeff like the back of my hand. Madam Garant was at my play at theatre three and I played on rocket ship park since 3.IM A LOCAL OF 30 YEARS and I know port Jeff BETTER than this. OLD FEILDS- YOU WILL NOT LAST LONG in PORT JEFF TREATING YOUR LOCALS LIKE THIS! It's word of mouth that gets you your ticket. This is NOW one of my favorite go to places to eat when in Port Jefferson. Old Fields has nice atmosphere and the wait staff was amazing. they were always making sure that we were OK with our meals.
