I am so happy we have Old Gui Lin near us and we have access to gooood Gui Lin Mi Fen (Gui Lin rice noodles). I've been 3 times and always get the A1. The flavors are amazing and the crispy pork belly, clear soup and rice noodles make it a pretty perfect bowl. The beef pancake roll, fried buns/man tou, and beef brisket noodles are delicious too. There might be some language barrier as some employees only speak mandarin but they've all been very kind so far. The highlights of this place besides the food: - toppings bar where you can help yourself to whatever toppings you want like pickled long beans, bamboo shoots, pickled greens, peanuts, fried soy beans, cilantro, etc. - they don't charge tip!! The pos system completely doesn't even pressure you with a tipping prompt. Doesn't matter if it's dine-in or to go. They do expect you to clean up after yourself and bus your dishes, though employees do come by and wipe down tables too. I came here for lunch. They have communal seating. It was packed with happy customers. Luckily with only two of us we were able to find a seat quickly. We tried the braised pork and braised beef dry noodle. Both come with a bowl of broth. You go to the self service station and put whatever toppings you want on your dish and add splashes of broth until it's just right. The chili oil, peanuts, and fresh cut scallions are fantastic. I enjoy the pickled veg flavor and texture, but I'd recommend trying a little of it first if you're unsure. The noodles were so smooth and light. I will definitely be back! read more

Heard really good things about this new spot on Freeport Blvd. There are tons of Chinese restaurants in this area, so it can be pretty hard to stand out amongst the competition, but this place does something pretty different. The menu is food that is from the GUI Lon area, which is definitely different from the typical Cantonese cuisine of Sacramento. There are various rice and noodle bowls to choose from, along with a wide selection of appetizers and drinks. I ordered the A1 GUI Lin special which is noodles topped with a variety of meats including roasted pork and sliced beef brisket. I would highly recommend this dish to anyone who likes noodle soups. It came with a side of broth that you can sip on the side or pour over, but also an unlimited toppings bar where you can add picked veggies, peanuts, green onions, cilantro etc. I also ordered a green onion pancake with was filled with sauce and beef, but it was just okay. Although this place was quite busy even at 1:30pm on a weekday, the service was really fast and attentive. Came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch after hearing good reviews about this place. Ordered the Guilin Rice Noodles which came with some crispy pork, and two other types of meat. They have a cool little section with pickled vegetables, peanuts, and chili oils. The portions are good, the price is good, but the noodle dish itself was lacking flavor. Very little options in town for Guilin noodles, this place is very popular among Chinese to get some spicy everyday noodles from the mainland, it's considered more of a street food with very affordable prices in northern China, noodles here is very decent, but the side dishes such as cucumbers salad, pig ears in hot oil and the chicken feet were too light in flavor, I have to add some hot peppers flakes, soy sauce and vinegar to enhance the flavor, price is very reasonable and sign on table is no tipping needed, will definitely return when wife is craving. read more

The noodles didn't really feel like guilin mifen either - more of a fusion between hong Kong/teochew style meats/soup with the Guilin/mainland suan la (sour-spicy) and rice noodles. My dad also experienced the same thing. We got different types of bowls and different toppings. I have eaten here 3 times in the past 7 days. Bottom line is...this place reminds me of Chinese food from CHINA. If you want to eat something that reminds you of China, come check out Old Gui Lin. Now for those that are unfamiliar with what this restaurant serves, let's take a quick tour of China! Many people are familiar with Dim Sum, wontons, dumplings, noodles, and barbecue goods of Canton or Guang Dong; however, just south of Canton is the providence of Guang Xi. Guang Xi is home of many famous rice noodle soups including snail rice noodle soup or lou si fen. Lou si fen is also called "smelly noodle". But this is not the only famous noodle from Guang Xi...there is also Gui Lin Mi Fen which is what Old Gui Lin serves so delicously. Now I haven't tried every dish yet but I will eventually. So far, I recommend everything that I've had. The first being the OG, gui lin mi fen. This is a soupless noodle served with perfect crispy skin pork and flavorful braised beef shank slices. When you take it togo, they will give you a small container of braising liquid (liquid gold) that is super tasty and brings the noodle to another level. Because it is a dry noodle, they also give you a bowl of soup on the side to quench your thirst. If you order it togo, they have conveniently put the soup in these plastic pouches (genius idea to prevent spilling in the car!). After you get your noodles from the counter, you will head immediately to the right and see the treasure of toppings or condiments. For me, I add everything because it is like a paradise of flavors. From memory, I recall toppings of preserved mustard green, bamboo shoots, preserved long beans, preserved hard vegetable, freshly roasted peanuts and soybeans, green onion, cilantro, and occasionally fresh thai chili peppers or tian jin peppers. My only gripe about this toppings station is the spoon is sooooo long and the scoop is too small...I think tongs would serve me better since I love all the toppings. Now when eating gui lin mi fen you can either keep your soup separate or literally pour it into your bowl. I've tried both ways and lean more toward dumping the soup in. 10/10 The next noodle I would recommend is the beef brisket rice noodle soup. The beef is so tender and it includes a mix of brisket, tendon, and shank. The soup is the same soup as you get on the side when you order the gui lin mi fen. If its a cold winter day, I definitely would recommend this one! 10/10 The third noodle I've tried is the Pork Ribs Rice Noodle Soup. It looked like spareribs and was very soft. The meat falls off the bone. It has a very similar taste to the beef brisket noodle soup. Because it has bone, you've got to be a little more careful when eating. 9/10 The fourth noodle I've tried is the Braised Pork Noodle Soup. This one is very similar to lu rou which is a style of braised pork belly. I really liked this one but thought that because the meat was a little too fatty for a noodle soup. I think the braised pork would be perfect on a bowl of steamed rice. 9/10 The appetizers that I've had include the beef rolled pancake and pumpkin pancake. The beef rolled pancake is packed with braised beef shank slices with cucumber and sweet bean sauce or hoisin sauce. The pancake is chewy and flaky. I have had it while eating at the restaurant and to go. I recommend to eat it in store to preserve the pancake texture. 8/10 The pumpkin pancake is rather delicious. It reminds me of pan fried mochi with sesame seeds. In fact, it is similar to the sesame ball dessert but there is no filling inside. Once again, because it is a freshly pan fried dish, I recommend to eat it in store to preserve the pancake texture. 8/10 Lastly, their milk tea is pretty decent. It actually reminded me of the previous shop's milk tea (Boba Cafe). I've only had the almond milk tea and its always been my go to when I am in China and Taiwan. 9/10 Overall, I have not been disappointed at all. I dare say that this is one of my favorite restaurants in Sacramento and maybe even the bay area. Give it a try and don't just take my words for it!!! read more

Food was great! I've never been here before, but it seems like they've been here for a while. Not sure how I haven't heard of Old Gui Lin, but their noodles and meat are great! We got the cucumber appetizer, too and that was good as well. I'd definitely come back again! Only gripe is that the tv is sort of loud, so it's hard to hear when you're sitting near it in the back.
