I read about the grilled cheese at Cafe Luxembourg in the West Side Rag and knew I would have to try it sometime. WOW, it lived up to the hype. This is undoubtedly the best grilled cheese I have ever had. The bread is soft yet crisp, the mixture of Gruyère and cheddar is wonderful, and the fries are perfect. Luckily I was able to mooch off of my sister's grilled cheese, because I tried the breakfast club sandwich and wasn't as impressed with it. The top half of the brioche bun was hard and the avocado didn't seem completely ripe. The breakfast sandwich is a skip. Service was great and the outside patio was cute and cool on a hot day. I visit NYC often and dine solo for breakfast at Café Luxembourg nearly every day I am in town. The restaurant has always been welcoming, accommodated my request to dine at a specific table, and practiced unfussy hospitality -- until today. I spent 45 minutes enjoying a two-course breakfast and reading the Times on my iPad (which sat flat on the table, like a magazine) when a manager approached and informed me that "iPads and laptops are not permitted in the restaurant." I had been eating and reading in that same spot for the entirety of my meal, had done so the day prior, and during every visit before then. The manager confirmed this was a newly-instituted policy. I paid my bill, then canceled my reservation for the following day. While I'm mindful that laptops and other work setups may detract from the dining environment Café Luxembourg wishes to cultivate, my reading device was no more obtrusive than a folded newspaper. In fact, it was the manager's discourteous policy enforcement that detracted from the hospitable environment I once enjoyed at this restaurant. If a restaurant enforces unusual policies like this one, they should be stated in writing somewhere -- ideally in the reservation confirmation -- so diners are not caught unawares mid-meal. read more

The Good: Food was delish through and through. Croque Monsieur, Steak Tartare, Moule Frites, Salad and Onion soup. My family and I loved them all. Service was also impeccable! The Bad: Spot seems to be only nice and clean place in an area that was once nice when I lived here in the neighborhood. The Ugly: A bit out of the way from Midtown Manhattan, where we are currently staying, but could also be a nice "getaway" since it's a tiny bit mire subdued in terms of busyness. read more

The area we were sitting the chair I was sitting in got bumped a few times, due to spacing of back to back chairs, but the servers were aware and apologetic. Everyone did a fantastic job! Cute little French spot for a Sunday afternoon late lunch. We arrived a bit early but the host was able to seat us right away. I almost gave this place four stars bc the table was so tiny but!...this is NYC! and I forget that most restaurants have to be tiny. Super cute French restaurant on the UWS. Came here for lunch on a weekday and it wasn't too crowded. Service was fast and friendly. Ambiance is very cozy and Parisian-- kinda wish the seating was better spaced out though, because it would was hard to get around the restaurant! - Moules frites: 9/10 (pretty good moules frites with a strong garlic flavor) Overall, I'd try to come back in the evening when the weather is good, so I can sit outside. We ordered: 1) Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, 2) Frank Frites, 3) Steak Frites, 4) Pan Seared Branzino, 5) Chocolate chip cookies w/ vanilla ice cream, 6) Creme Brulee. Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail - WOW! We had no expectations w/ this, but the shrimps were so succulent, juicy and high quality. It was probably one of the best shrimps I have had in awhile. We were going to a show at Beacon Theatre on a Friday night so decided to stop at Cafe Luxembourg. We arrived at around 5pm without a reservation but they were able to seat us. We timed it well as about 20 minutes after we arrived the place was completely full. We had never visited this restaurant before but the atmosphere was great and it felt like being in a bistro in France. We started with the Oysters, which were lovely and fresh. I then ordered the molues frites and my other half ordered the branzino. Both of us loved our dishes, the sauce with the mussels was so tasty and I highly recommend asking for some bread to mop the leftover sauce up. We decided to share the lemon meringue dessert, which had the perfect balance between lemon tartness and the sweetness of the meringue. Service was prompt without ever feeling rushed and our server was very attentive. Prices are a little high but given the area that is to be expected. There is nothing groundbreaking with this place, it's just classic food done well. We also shared a bottle of wine and our total bill, including tax and tip, was $260. A little expensive but to be expected for the area. We both agreed that if we had another show at the Beacon we would probably stop here again. read more

I haven't been here for 20 years and today I realized what a mistake that has been! This is one of the original places TO BE in the early 90's and if it reminds you of Balthazar or Lucky Strike or Pastis it's because this used to be owned by Keith McNally and his now ex wife but now owner of this place now! The Breakfast Egg Sandwich I ordered was undercooked with terribly over-fried bacon , a brioche roll that fell apart after a single bite, and dry and utterly tasteless home fries. We visited NYC during the week before Christmas, dining at a number of French restaurants, and Cafe Luxembourg was easily the best. I had the chicken au jus, which was accompanied by creamed spinach, whipped carrots, and wild rice. Everything was absolutely delicious. My lovely bride ordered the Luxemburger with bacon and roquefort - she finished it off easily and said it was even better than the Black Label burger at Minetta Tavern. We shared the frisée salad and haricots vert - both excellent. For dessert we ordered the sticky toffee pudding and the profiteroles - the most flavorful desserts of every restaurant that we tried. The bread was not good. Is it too much to ask a French restaurant to have fresh crusty bread? That could've ruined my meal as both dishes had the most dippable sauces. I realize other things exist on the menu here, but I don't really need them. The vibes are old school UWS French Bistro, and you just want to keep coming back, the service matches that of a friendly neighborhood server, but in a french way. Ignore the hype. What was once a nice bistro-esque dining experience on the upper west side has become a tourist-trap at best, or a bit of a monstrosity at worst. There are just too many people in the space to make for any sort of relaxing meal. That was my impression on a recent visit, on an otherwise quiet Tuesday evening. And as for the food, both my dining companion and I ordered a martini and the steak frites, and wouldn't you know it, the drinks didn't arrive until after the food did (with no apology), the steak was unremarkable, and the fries were dried out to the point they had to be sent back for new ones, all making for a rather hectic, disordered meal. My wife and I, visiting NYC, had dinner at the bar at Cafe Luxembourg right before we attended an event at Lincoln Center. While we had earlier reservations, we'd had to cancel them, so we walked in without any. The Host was somewhat accommodating, be we secured places at the bar after the kindly folks already there moved to allow us seats together. Amanda, our bartender and sever, was absolutely wonderful. Extremely friendly and very accommodating, she took care of our every need. I had the Flank Steak and Frites while my wife had the French Onion Soup and a Luxemberger. She also ordered the whipped potatoes and chives. Pistachio gelato for desert. The house champagne was excellent. Our meal, the awesome, friendly service, and the ambience of Cafe Luxembourg truly helped make our weekend in New York very special. Amanda was the best! Ambiance and service 5/5. We had the absolute sweetest server who told us about being a singer songwriter and his creative experiences during COVID. He was just so nice and friendly and waited on us with such care even though we were only there for apps and drinks. Outside seating was lovely on a spring day! Food 5/5 for what we ordered but I wasn't in love with the menu options (4/5) and prices ($$-$$$). I absolutely loved the zucchini fries which came out piping hot and moist inside and a yuzu aioli dipping sauce which is why I had ordered it. My friend I dined with us a chef and he was impressed. We also got the broccolini, a classic dish, which was delicious. Mocktails 4/5 - we came to drink mocktails as both of us were not drinking. We were surprised to find a robust mocktail list; my friend got the phony Negroni and he sipped on his. I got this peach puree ginger mocktail which was delicious but not a large portion for $14. I would like to try some of the other mocktails if I come again.
