This venerable restaurant was once the epitome of local fine dining in a historic colonial setting. It is fine dining no more. The charm of the site remains, but the quality of the experience has diminished greatly over the years, A year ago the service was bad, abysmal. During last week's visit, the service was much better. It was encouraging to see the improvement, The food can be good, but also can be very mediocre. On Sunday two of us ordered baked stuffed haddock. It was obviously a processed, frozen piece of fish baked on top of stuffing and served with a tasteless sauce covering it. The fish was dried out and excessively fishy tasting, not much of an improvement over what might otherwise have been a tv dinner. We live in New England where good seafood is revered. Its menu description is "fresh native haddock with a seafood stuffing, topped with a lobster newburg sauce". What was served was terrible, a real travesty. Not sure I will return. read more

What a lovely place for lunch! The restaurant is requiring masks, prefers reservations, and is cleaning between each table. I'd never been here before but when I asked friends from the area they all suggested Old Mill for lunch. We were early for our noon reservation so we "wasted time" admiring the view and the adorable birds. There's a gift shop in the front lobby having a 75% off sale so we picked up some small items for stocking stuffers on the way out. The food was delicious! The pecan rolls that come with the meals are so delicious they sell boxes of them for you to take home. I got broiled scallops with mashed squash and it was prepared well. Would order it again. Update my last review was my first visit and I left a great review next 3 times I visited not good the third visit was only to use the gift certificate I was given for it being not up to snuff. I get it some places have bad nights. Usually due to short staffing and poor management I think it was the latter in this instance 1 out of 4 nights is what I got. Doubt I will return. Inside had many rooms big and small, we usually eat at the bar but the bar, downstairs, is closed. Hostess is pretty direct, how many 2, ok follow me, sit here. The waitress was much better though she seemed pretty new to this. We sat in a big empty room with a nice view of the pond and it gradually did fill up so felt a little warmer. drinks were ok but small but priced accordingly. The server was pleasant. Calamari was good as was the corn fritters. My rare burger was, well medium at least, though nicely sized. Wife really liked the vegetable pot pie but she likes the boring stuff!! Was very excited to try here and as my family had talked about it for years. Our highlight was feeding the ducks and the scenery outside. We waited 30 minutes for a table after being told 20 but still not bad. But then we waited a good 20 minutes before anyone came to the table and at least another 20 minutes for water that was never refilled although it was empty before the meals came. The food was solid and I would enjoy a meal from there again if the service wasn't so painfully slow. We asked for a box and the check and waited over 45 minutes for it. Our server was busy, there were lots of tables open but it seems there servers need more help. Overall we were there for almost 3 hours. All we ordered was dinner for 3. Not terrible, but not great. I've been here a few times for various reasons--a wedding, a celebratory brunch, a few lunches, and some week night dinners. All the staff have been lovely, friendly, and attentive. The food fluctuates with being very good to mediocre. It seems to have the potential to be very good to great, but it's not quite there. There are some flat flavors, not-so-fresh salads or extras on burgers. Rather off putting. I won't complain about the pecan rolls (hit or miss) as they are complimentary. The consistently delicious fritters make up for it. There may be a time that I will stop making excuses for things and not go back. For now, I remain hopeful! read more

This place is great, highly recommend! Corn fritters and pecan rolls to start, so damn tasty, I appreciated something a little different (than bread). Service was top-notch, from the hostess to the waitress. Seated right away, waitress stopped by within minutes to take drink orders, and kept beverages topped off. Spinach dip app was good, everyone enjoyed main entrees (haddock, steak, blue-cheese salad). We went down to the pub for an after dinner drink, and sat outside. We love the food, prices, and atmosphere most times. Our only negative experience was on 9/3/23. We were put into a room with maybe 5 tables which included a party of 10. It was just us and the large party at the time. There was a little kid and she was as talkative as most in her age range but not loud which was fine. However her grandmother was obnoxious, doing nursery rhymes with her, clapping her hands for 1 or all of them. We asked to move which happened, and the obnoxious woman further insulted us as we left. No one could ask them to stop treating the room like they were at home? The waitress was nice but it would have been nice if the manager apologized. read more

The Old Mill was one of our go-to restaurants. Loved everything about it. Unfortunately they took the one entree I almost always ordered off the menu. They made the best Yankee pot roast around. We were in town for a wedding and searched for the nearest restaurant and this came up. With no one from the area in our party we took a chance. We had 11 in our party, so we gave a courtesy call that we were en route. They were able to sit us as soon as we got there. Between the 11 we got a variety of different items from the menu, and I didn't hear any complaints about the food. I picked the Old Mill to celebrate some good news with family. I had been there many years ago & enjoyed it then. The night was tainted with really wanting it to be good. We went on a Friday night, I made reservations for a party of 4 @ 7pm in advance. When i arrived the hostess was a little gruff when i asked if we could have a table outside, just not very friendly or service oriented. She seemed annoyed that i asked. We landed at a great outdoor table next to the pond...that was the saving grace of our experience. Location, location, location. That's it. This place seems to expect diners to be grateful for the location regardless of the service or food quality. That seems to be the business plan.The place was not busy, plenty of empty tables.The waitress had to be found for drink orders, water, dessert...it was like we were invisible. The food was meh, a far miss from fine dining. The famous pecan rolls were stale. We all had cocktails which were fine, no complaints. Our party of 4 each had a different menu item with similar experience; Prime rib was dry & tough- it was overcooked & the red potatoes were hard. The Spinach ravioli was a very small portion but the sauce was tasty. The blue crab ravioli was good but also, a very small entre portion and lastly the BBQ ribs were dry, tough and lackluster the sauce was nothing special or memorable. If the food was good, the price would be a plus. Dinner for 4 with one round of bar drinks for 3 out of 4 was just over $200, so not bad..but the food & service was sub par making that $200 seem like a punch in the face. It's a shame as I really wanted this place to be as awesome as I remembered and it just wasn't. I will never go back...not even for the location. read more

We love this place! We only come here when we've been skiing at Wachusett or apple picking out on Rt 2. The bar/lounge downstairs is so cozy! We prefer to eat there but tonight we were early so had to eat in the restaurant upstairs. It's very nostalgic. Best clam chowder. The corn fritters are delicious and such a nice, different thing than regular table bread. (Although tonight it was served with fake syrup instead of traditional maple syrup which was disappointing.) The service was great, food was cozy and delicious. We recommend the clam chowder, onion soup and buffalo chicken dip. We wish the beer list had more craft beers. read more

Today was a return to an old favorite that I haven't visited for about 10 years. Now I have to ask myself why did it take so long to return?' Today is Mother's Day and the Old Mill was quite busy. However, our service was superb and the food did not disappoint. My wife loved her salmon and my daughter enjoyed her steak tips. The setting was rustic very pleasant. I grew up coming to family reunions at this establishment to great success. Tonight we had a wedding rehearsal dinner which started off perfect. Food was great, bartenders and drinks were exceptional, and the ambience was wonderful. We paid for an open bar with the family and had a wonderful time until realizing the restaurant was cutting our bar off. The "owner" said we we were "too" drunk to keep drinking, an hour or two before our agreed upon time. There were some awkward interactions while we waited for our shuttle bus back to the hotel. When confronted with the matter, the man who claimed to be the owner or manager said he was "calling the cops" on our family party of 60+. The cops never came which was unfortunate as we wanted to discuss everything with them. All we know is we'll never come back to this restaurant after the way we were treated! read more

Just walked into this establishment. Stood there a few moments while 3 employees conversed at the gift shop. Finally had to call out that customers were here. This isn't much, but it just ties into the past couple of times we have gone here. The service is certainly not what it used to be and neither is the food. Just based on their corn fritters and pecan rolls I will continually come back. This is a go to spot for my friends and I during the summer when we're riding to mount Wachusett. We typically sit on their porch along the pond to see the various geese and ducks. Over the years I've ordered numerous entrees and lunches and I've not had a complaint yet. I am sorry....but I was disappointed! We have been coming to this restaurant for three years since my daughter moved to MA. The first couple of times were good. Since then the food has gone downhill. Maybe a new chef...I don't know. My daughter and I got dinner on 10/15/21. She got the stuffed duck and I got the traditional burger. For an appetizer, we got the fried calamari. The fried calamari was chewy and seemed like it was frozen. The stuffed duck did not have the same great stuffing that my family loved. The hamburger seemed like a frozen patty, not Angus, as it was described. Bun didn't seem to fresh and the tomato and onion were put on a wilted piece of kale! The pecan rolls were stale and warmed. I don't know what is going on at this restaurant, but it surely ISN'T like it used to be. We won't be back! read more

We have enjoyed this restaurant for over 10+ years and so you can imagine how truly disappointed we were when we experienced the type of rotten food and horrendous service this past week for Father's day. When our meal first arrived, it was clear the vegetables (broccoli) and salad had been withered, yellowed, and crusted in a way that was weeks old at best. The chicken was extremely dry and the steak was burnt to a crisp. When we politely noted this to our waitress, she denied the issue and refused to replace the dish. Rather then go into further detail, I just wanted to forewarn those who have had great experiences here in the past.
