Fantastic! This was my first time here but my parent whom I was with had been many many times and raved about it. I got the country fried steak, mash potatoes, & Mac and cheese. The steak was fork tender lightly breaded and so yummy. It did have brown gravy which was different than I am used too (white gravy) but I was pleasantly surprised they went fantastic together. The sides were yummy too. The mash was a little lump which I love. Reminds me of something you get from your grand mothers. The mac and cheese was baked and reminded me of what I mom would make growing up. We are going back for breakfast tomorrow and I am looking forward to it! Great little restaurant. read more

Holy delicious breakfast! This place has the breakfast nailed - hands down the best around the lake. The egg benedict were fabulous. I don't know what they did, but ti's better than the standard dish usually thrown down for breakfast. Maybe it was the home fries? Those were toasty and hot and perfect for a cold morning. I had to help myself to bites of everyone else's breakfast. So if you're heading over to Old Oak Cafe, I have to recommend a few things - the sweet potato pancakes - not your normal pancake, yes i know, but if you don't try this, you're going to live with regret for the rest of your life. - eggs benedict - like i said before, i'm not sure what they do, but it's a great dish. it's not too salty and the home fries were awesome - coffee - i like that they serve their coffee in glass mugs. there is something about it that makes it feel clean and fresh - and the coffee IS fresh :) if you're on the other side of the lake, make the drive, this place is totally worth the breakfast! read more

I haven't tried the breakfast which I hear is wonderful, but their lunch needs a little help. I ordered the Chef Salad which is a simple salad, I believe. You have the choice of turkey and/or ham. I chose the turkey. The vegetables were wonderful. Bright & fresh grape tomatoes, cucumbers & greens. The hard boiled egg was fine, but the cubed turkey was disgusting. Blubbery & had a chemical flavor. Looked like the processed loaf turkey. I don't understand if you're going to have fresh veggies, why the fake nasty meats? I put all of the turkey cubes to the side. You would think the waitress would've asked if something was wrong with the turkey. Nope! Not to mention this waitress in particular wasn't very friendly, concerned or attentive. We came here with a large group today for Sunday brunch. They offered a buffet along with their regular brunch menu. The buffet had a great selection of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, fruit, muffins, and more. It was all homestyle. Nothing complicated, just tasty and fresh. If you ordered the buffet, and didn't want the scrambled eggs offered, they would make you fresh poached or fried eggs for no additional charge. Our server was very pleasant and handled the large party well. She was attentive and detailed. This place is the perfect place to go to when looking for a casual spot to grab a bite to eat. Old oak is a great place to eat. Great breakfast lunch and dinner. Just good home cooked food. I am hesitant to buy seafood at places other than seafood restaurant but the fried shrimp and seafood are really good as well. Owners are great people and very friendly. They are always willing to accommodate you if they can. It is a regular go to place to me whether I want comfort food like burger and fries or something healthier like grilled chicken breast, sweet potato and steamed broccoli. All delicious!!!! Our breakfast favorite at Smith Mountain Lake. Crispy bacon and great pancakes. It does tend to get pretty crowded on Saturdays and Sundays so be prepared for a bit of a wait. The Sunday buffet is a big hit. read more

We've been coming to SML for many years, but only recently discovered the Old Oak Cafe. Nothing fancy on the inside, but all of the food we have had there for breakfast and lunch has been very good every time we visit. Definitely recommend the BLT! read more

I grew up around SML and am still there pretty often. This restaurant changes my whole perspective about eating before noon at the lake. The breakfast here is as good as it gets. Spent Saturday at the lake and decided to give Old Oak Cafe a try on the recommendation of a friend. Good food, reasonable prices and fast, friendly service. The restaurant is clean and bright. We ordered breakfast (served until 2 pm) and the food was plentiful and very good. I recommend the hash brown casserole! I will definitely eat here again the next time I'm in the area. read more

Visited after a girls night out around 9:00 am on a Friday morning. It was busy but not overwhelmingly so. We waited a few minutes for someone to come and take us to an empty table. Then we waited a few more minutes for a waitress to come and take our drink order. I couldn't decided whether I wanted the sweet potato pancakes or a blueberry waffle so I got both. The other girls got French toast and biscuits and gravy with a side of hash-brown casserole and fried potatoes. The food was delivered in a short amount of time. The food was okay but nothing I would ever tell anybody they need to go there for. The sweet potato pancakes were ok, they didn't really have a lot of flavor. The blueberry waffle was also bland and the blueberries were not mixed in they were just put on top of a bland waffle and they weren't even fresh blueberries, they tasted like blueberries out of a can. Not good at all. The biscuits and sausage gravy were not impressive, only half got eaten the gravy was nothing at all like what you would make at home. Tasted like it was some kind of bad mix. The hash brown casserole was ok it kind of had something of a southwestern taste to it, they didn't taste fresh either. Fried potatoes were decent if you drenched them in some ketchup. The French toast was just ok as well nothing special. The service was not impressive either. Our waitress is not the person who brought out our food and out waitress never came back to our table to ask us if we had everything we needed or to ask us how the food was. She showed back up about five minutes after we all finished eating (or at least what was going to get eaten) she didn't ask if boxes were needed she only asked if the check was all together. Food, amazing and over exceeded my expectations. The service? Horrible. It wasn't the waitress or anyone else but it was one of the owners, with dark brown hair. From the moment my party of 4 walked in she was rude and disrespectful. From us asking just how long was the wait, to her asking if our meal "made us feel better" at the end. Maybe I should have tried the breakfast since the reviews on the breakfast seem to be great, however I did not. I ordered a burger and honestly I have had much better. The burger did not seem to be freshly made. It looked like a prepackaged burger. Also while yes we had a some what large party (7), it took a very long time to get our food especially when 4 of 7 just had salads. Also the service was substandard. If the service was a little better I could over look the long wait time. Would I go back to try the breakfast?? No there are other places I would stop at. read more

The food here for breakfast is wonderful but the service is terrible. This was our second visit after having a luke warm experience the first time. When we entered the restaurant there was no hostess. We stood for about 10 minutes without even being greeted by any staff member. Another couple came in behind our party of 5 so there was a large group waiting at the front door. Two waitresses and a kitchen staff member all looked at us, then turned around and walked away without even saying "We will be right with you". The phone was ringing off the hook and no one would answer it. Again, the breakfast was delicious but when we mentioned our concerns to our waitress she acted like she could care less and did not even say sorry. We will not be back again. read more

I was part of a table of 8 on July 25th and we all enjoyed the food; was fast and friendly. Cannot remember the waitress name, she had cool arrow earrings, was great smiled a lot. Prices are good. Only complaint we all had was that the lights in the building kept dimming constantly. Obviously a short in the wiring. I find this very dangerous not just for the guests but also for the staff. No one wants to be in a fire, been there no fun. owners please spend some money and fix your electrical issues. Will definitely come back on our next visit. read more
