Over the past few months I have ordered "Chinese" (actually, Americanized Chinese) food for lunch MANY times from several different Chinese restaurants in the Tysons/Vienna/Oakton area, and today I am going to review several of them, so you can check out all of these reviews to see my conclusions. I have been ordering takeout from Old Peking since the late 1990s when I lived in Oakton. And there is a reason that they have survived so long. That is because they offer excellent food and a great value. First off, the portions are large. I always easily get two meals from one lunch portion. And their egg roll is one of the largest in the area. The quality is very high. Their beef with green pepper in particular is amazing - and has been so consistently for decades. They give you a lot of beef, and the beef is always tasty and very tender. Never tough or chewy. The vegetables are fresh and crisp - never soggy. Absolute perfection! I am less a fan of the sweet and sour pork, for example, but it's still quite good. And the egg roll and fried rice are outstanding. The prices are higher than some other places, but the portions are so large and the quality is so good that it's still a great value. When you place or pick up your order, the woman who greets you is polite and friendly and their website and phone app actually work - hooray! Bottom line is that this has long been one of my favorite Chinese takeout restaurants in the Tysons/Vienna/Oakton area, and far and away my favorite place for beef with green pepper in particular. Saturday dinner 6:30 pm. Probably our 4th time here. Seating available immediately. Nice dining room with table clothes. Classier looking place and the lady who runs it is dressed nice. They charge about $3 more per entree than comparable chinese restauarnts. The attempt to be classy is partly cancelled out by the disheveled waiter who works there routinely. A bit lacking in courtesy and tact. Food is about average. Kung pao chicken 7/10, orange chicken 6/10 (not much orange tatste), walnut shrimp 8/10, wonton soup (7/10), egg drop soup (8/10). This place is the real deal!!! Go in and order the Peking duck. You will crave it forever! The setting is nice and service friendly. The food is amazing. I'm in love with their egg drop soup. Pass on dumplings (unless you prefer thick coverings) and save room for the perfectly cooked duck. It may be a small restaurant located in a strip mall - but I promise you will leave with a full belly and a huge smile on your face! read more

Ordered takeout. Arrived 30 minutes later. One customer was in front of me at the desk. The clerk continued to pick up the phone and talk instead of helping us. When it was my turn, I gave her my phone number, she checked all of the bags that were ready on the desk and then started helping the next customer. Continued answering the phone. Rang up several people before finally finding my bag right in front of her on the desk the entire time. Apologized and tried to make it up to me by forcing a second fortune cookie on my daughter, even after I repeatedly said no. We were in the restaurant almost 30 minutes trying to get takeout which was ready and waiting when we walked in. General Tso's was good, but definitely different than most places. It's not as sweet as other restaurants. Decent portion for the price. Tofu- I don't care much for tofu, but my wife seemed to enjoy it. Portion size was good. We only received one portion of white rice for 2 dishes. Did not receive $29 value for the food or service. Won't go back. read more

This is a surprisingly pretty and small restaurant. We originally went based on Yelp reviews. We each had a "tiki" type drink and both were really good. Kind of a fun thing to find! Lunch was pretty busy with both business people and friendly groups eating there. We saw a good bit of take out business too. Our appetizer was fried wontons - nice gingery filling. Served with hot mustard and duck sauce. The wonton soup (what can I say, I like wontons) had a clear yellow broth which looked bland, but had a good flavor. There was some finely chopped "Szechuan vegetable" along with two wontons. I wish there had been 3 wontons, but it was a nice soup. Broccoli with garlic sauce was a bit on the sweet side for me. Shrimp with lobster sauce was soupy, but tasted great. Our star was the beef with scallions. The beef was tender but had a nice charred flavor. My husband was there on a second visit where the broccoli was not sweet, but nice and garlicky. He also enjoyed the pork with black bean sauce. Service is very good. I feel like it is a place you could take a date, a friend or a business group and be happy. read more

Unfortunately I have to drop a star as on a recent visit we were served old meat in two dishes--This is completely unacceptable. Luckily the other dishes were very good. But I am hesitant to get any beef dishes here again. So far the chicken dishes and prawn dishes have always been yummy. read more

I went in tonight with my brother. We ordered Kung Pao Beef, Singapore Rice Noodles & Mango Chicken after they finally came up to us to take the order. (I Actually had to call over the lady as almost 10 minutes had passed). I would have thought they'd bring us water right off but they didn't. I figured they'd bring it with the food but they didn't. I ended up having to grab our male waiter. The food did come fast but unfortunately I think It should have spent more time in the kitchen. The Kung Pao Beef was surprisingly bland and unspicy considering it had a bunch of peppers in it. I didn't actually eat the peppers but thier essence usually comes out onto the plate. If that does not happen thats typically a result of old/stale peppers. The Mango Chicken had a pleasant sweetness and had nice big chings of sliced mango but it was too mild. The sauce it came with also had an offputting hint of watered down ketsup. Finally the Singapore Rice Noodles were decent but a bit heavy on the yellow curry. Surprisingly they were spicy (in a good way). Ironically it was spicier than the Kung Pao. The icing on the cake was that we had to ask for the check twice from the male waiter and took several minutes for him to come back with it. It wasnt even that busy. In short, If you're not in a hurry and don't have taste buds; This place is perfect for you! read more

I'm not a frequent Yelp reviewer, but I have to say something about my experience here. I was really excited to try it because it had a dining room, not just a take out counter, a nice menu, and was a bit more expensive than other places nearby, so I was expecting Chinese food a cut above what I'd been ordering lately. Sadly, I was very disappointed. Now, I can speak only to the take-away and only to what I ate, but of that, none of it was good. I love trying new places, especially during the lock down, and so when I do that, I order a variety of dishes and make three or four meals out of it, but I'm not looking forward to finishing these leftovers. Here is what I experienced from each dish I had. The Hot and Sour Soup, had no spice and no sourness. In fact when I dished it out I thought they had mistakenly given me egg drop soup, but it had just enough of the distinctive hot and sour taste, and none of the salty earthiness of egg drop soup, so have to think it wasn't a mistake. The egg rolls were not terrible but nothing special, about the same as the large egg rolls at Panda Express only oilier. The steamed dumplings were thick and doughy, and the wrapping completely eliminated whatever taste the pork filling had. In the beef fried rice, the rice was wet and mushy, the beef was dry, and everything just tasted like oil, no saltiness, no flavor, just bland. Similarly, the Kung Pao chicken had no spice and none of the sweet, salty, or sour flavors characteristic of that dish. I even tried one of the dried chili peppers it had been tossed with, and even the pepper had no spice or flavor left in it! I have no idea what was done to it to make it like that! This is probably the most popular Chinese take-out dish in the world, and I've eaten it literally all over the world, and believe me I'm not exaggerating when I say this was just a plate of bland nothing. I recognize we're in a pandemic, and when its over, and they're offering dining in again, I may give Old Peking another chance. But I will not order for take away from here again. What a shame. read more

This has really gone down hill. The last 3 takeout orders have bordered on inedible. We had an issue a while ago and phoned about items being left out of the bag and they made no apologies, and it was a nearly $200 order for a family get together. Tonight food was old and cold. My girlfriend and I ordered takeout and got the sesame chicken (white meat) and the crispy beef, as well as the steamed dumplings for an appetizer. All three were very good with exceptional flavor. The only thing I was a little thrown back by was the price, $40.00. Although the food was really good, I didn't expect that price for only two entrees and an appetizer. We also only got one rice for the whole order, I figured most places give rice for each entree. read more

My wife and I are not "foodies", nor are we hard to please, but I'm not kidding, this is the worst Chinese food either of us had ever tasted. Grocery store frozen Chinese food is better. ...and we chose it because of all of the great reviews. We got our order "to go" and as sometimes happens, they forgot the soup (no big deal. It happens). Then we got a taste of things to come... Our spring rolls had some sort of sewer aftertaste and we simply couldn't finish them. It was disappointing that they didn't have traditional egg rolls, ...but the smell from the spring rolls.... Our Orange Chicken was served with some sweet goop poured over it (I assume the sauce), but it had absolutely no "orange" flavor to it. It just tasted like some sweet corn-syrupy ooze. The Sesame Chicken fared no better. It was virtually the same sweet slop poured over the identical breaded chicken cubes, but with some sesame seeds sprinkled on top. We were blown away and just laughing with disbelief. For the first time our lives, there were no left-overs to pick at the next day. ...it was all thrown out in the trash. What a huge waste of money. We could have had King Crab legs or fillet mignon instead. read more

I'm a fan of this nearby family-owned and operated table-service Chinese restaurant. Friendly and attentive service meets soft lighting and clean, cozy ambience where comfy booths with long tables facilitate sharing an entire family's assorted entrees with plenty of room for everyone. Our visits have been lucky to miss any crowds in the restaurant and there is always plenty of parking in the little strip mall on the corner of Hunter Mill Road and Chain Bridge Road. We are always greeted at the door and seated promptly. Food arrives with no big delays and is cleared right away--but we never feel rushed or intruded upon. It's a nice balance for a week day sit down meal with no fuss. My husband really likes the chicken dishes here as he has a choice between succulent chicken thigh or "all white meat" for Sesame, Ginger, or General Tsao's. I prefer either the spicier fare (although you may want to ask them to increase the heat, as many dishes which are marked as "spicy" don't seem spicy at all to me) or the Peking Duck. You can order half a duck for $19 and if you order an appetizer, it's a gracious plenty for two to share. read more

In Hawaii we would know an ethnic restaurant was authentic if it was filled with people of that ethnicity chattering loudly and incoherently (to me) in that particular language. So when I walked into Old Peking and saw it was filled with Caucasians, I figured that authentic Chinese was not what I was going to get. Which has never been a problem for me. If food is good I'm not snobby - bring it on! Over three different visits we've ordered the Moo Shi vegetables, vegetable pad thai, Ma Po tofu (steamed, not deep fried), and vegetable of Four Seasons with tofu. The only thing we didn't like enough to order twice was the Ma Po tofu but the Moo Shi and Pad Thai were both so good that we've had them every time we've gone there. After our second visit a friend who was sensitive to MSG said she thought they used MSG so on the third visit we asked if they could do the dishes without it and they had no problem. The food tasted as good to us and my friend didn't get that weird halo feeling that MSG gives her so they really didn't use it. Hooray! So what every time we walk in the place is full of Caucasians and we're the only Asians there. I am part-Chinese but have so little of it in my blood I probably wouldn't know authentic Chinese cooking if it bit me on the tongue. It's ok and our go-to since the Chinese place on 29 closed. They don't use canned mushrooms, but they do use a lot of bell peppers in their food which to me is just filler. Food is good. Nothing really special. read more

The decor was very impressive, however, the food was not. Don't get me wrong, it was okay. We started with steamed dumplings. The meat was fairly bland and the dipping sauce lacked the flavor that I am used to--it seemed more like slight watered down soy sauce than anything. My dining companion had the combination lo mein with beef, chicken, and shrimp, which was quite tasty and had a generous portion. I had the general tso's chicken, which was a bit overcooked and too battered for my liking. Maybe my standards are high because I lived in New York where Chinese food was cheap, delicious, and plentiful, but I would prefer PF Chang's to this. read more

I went here for lunch recently and ordered one of the lunch specials of hot and sour soup and hunan chicken. The soup we really good and I enjoyed it. The hunan chicken came out looking good, but unfortunately the chicken had a very old taste...yuck. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she offered to provide me with a new entree or an entree to take home with me, but I wasn't hungry anymore. When I asked for the check, they charged me the full amount for the lunch, including the bad entree :-( read more

We enjoy this restaurant for what it is..old school Chinese that doesn't try to be modern or Asian fusion. The fried dishes like General Tso's Chicken are not doused in too much breading and are reasonably meaty. We have stopped in every now and then and have enjoyed their food and service during each visit. read more

The food was terrible. It's was so dry that I couldn't even eat the wings I order for myself and I had to get my own sauce to soften the rice because they didn't give us any!! We ordered over $40 worth of food as all of it was terrible. One person even ordered soup and she said it was ok but on the menu it said it was $5.95 and on the receipt it said $12! It took forever to get here and the driver wasn't good either, he walked in on the phone and didn't even get off and demanded a bigger tip because he didn't like what he was given, and WAITED out front until everyone put together more money for him. We will never order from here again, we threw away all of the menus we had along with majority of the food we ordered. read more

The food has been consistently good each time we have picked up takeaway. We have had the crispy beef which is very tasty but too expensive and the basil chicken is amazing. Lettuce wraps are pretty plain but good. Hot and sour soup has been delicious each time. Overall it is a great local place. Friendliness and service are the downside to the place. Quality food, fast service Old Peking - Oakton is my family's favorite restaurant so far. We ordered the food from there many times since we know it last year. The environment is very clean , the food is always with good quality, the front desk is very kind, courteous and accommodating ! Menu has wide variety, we tried most of them and have never been disappointed - everything is fresh and tasty. We love Old Peking Crispy Beef , Old Peking "Sizzler", Comb Drunken Noodle with Beef, Chicken & Shrimp, BBQ Sparerib with Honey is my son's favorite appetizer. The waiter was very rude to us. We had young children and wanted to order our food with our drinks and he yelled "this is just drinks". He proceed to take over 30 minutes to bring us our drinks and took everyone else at the restaurants orders but ours. Once we finally got our food he brought everyone else's food but mine, my husband's and daughter's. Our checks were also wrong and he doubted us when we said we didn't order sherbet (we never ordered dessert). Really a 2.5 star visit Food : 3 Stars Service : 2 Stars Decor : 3 Stars 1st Visit. Their hosting area is not terribly well laid out. Cramped and unwelcoming. They sacrificed this to get more tables. They also seemed confused as to what to do when I stepped in by myself. And they didn't say 'good bye 'or 'thank you' when I left. The owner (lady) was occupying the reception area. Ordered 2 dishes. One tasted relatively good. Both came out lukewarm to cool...not hot as expected. Rice was also lukewarm. That means someone was slow to run my food once it was ready. No one checked on me to see if I was enjoying my food. I could only see 4 or 5 tables in the main dining area -- so not very busy. Portion size was excellent. I'm going to give this place one more try when I want American Chinese food. Hopefully they'll serve me hot food on my next visit. Will try them at lunch time next. I really need to find a good American Chinese restaurant in NOVA...sometimes you gotta have that General Tso's! read more

This place is conveniently located right near our home. They are quick and efficient on the phone and typically get our order right. Today, the egg rolls were some of the best I've tasted, but the meal left much to be desired. I ordered dark meat and received all white meat. I also placed an order for two entrees and only received rice for one dish. This place is too expensive to not get a full meal. I went to James Madison High School, down the street from Old Peking. My best friend and I hung out there after school at least once a week, dawdling over the $5 lunch specials until we found something better to do. The szechuan shredded chicken and crispy beef are awesome. My friend, a vegetarian, and I both loved the szechuan bean curd with mushrooms. Fast forward 10 years. We've both fled Virginia and never looked back. But she's in DC for a law school internship, and during my visit we decide to make the pilgrimage to Old Peking. The decor is snazzier, the prices higher. And the old owner comes out beaming to greet us: "Szechuan bean curd?" We almost fell over. He got a huge tip. read more

Ordered take out.... mediocre at best... fried dumplings were way to much dough and barely fried... dumplings in the Wonton Soup were basically raw! General Tsao's chicken... was ok. Fried rice was ok, mushy... as I said, Mediocre at best! Also, be advised... ordered from DoorDash. The Wonton Soup listed on their page is $12.75! They are located in a small strip center so you won't see from Chain Bridge Road unless you know it's there. We live down the street so we drive by every day on the way home! Everything we have ever ordered has been fabulous from the LoMein to the Basil Beef. Not greasy or too salty and always very fresh and hot. The reason I didn't give 5 stars was due to the fact that many of the meat dishes tend to be way too heavy on the onions and/or veggies. We have to ask every time either no onions or light and will pay extra for more meat. Especially, the Basil Beef which is probably the best we have EVER had but just the entire dish is probably 60% onions. Also, the chicken wings are big and juicy, not overly fried however, they are in a very heavy brown sauce and would suggest getting sauce on the side! Keep up the good work!! read more
