I love this place. The steaks are awesome, especially the bone in rib-eye. The noodle bake (their version of mac'n cheese) is fantastic. The mushroom appetizer is great, the deserts are awesome, great beer selection,good wine selection, etc. On top of it, many of the people eating here are local regulars making the place feel like a neighborhood bar. You come here for the ambiance. The restaurant is basically a quaint, old shack with cool vintage decor. There is a very long bar that stretches the length of the room. we were able to secure a reservation with little fuss. I definitely recommend making a reservation. The place is packed. The food was good, but not amazing. I had the chicken pot pie with mashed potatoes and my sister had the cheesy noodle bake. My dish was much better than hers, which was bland. My beer was fabulous. They charged $11 for a small glass of chardonnay. Food was also pricey for what you get. Service was relaxed and friendly. Dessert was the best part- baked fruit cobbler. read more

Wow, wow, WOW! I cannot say enough great things about this place. My boyfriend and I heard about this spot from some guys at the Rosenthal Winery tasting room-it sounded quirky and off the beaten path so we wanted to try it. It is really tough to get a reservation so after trying a couple of times (albeit, very last minute), we decided to take the restaurant's suggestion and just show up and try to find a place at the bar. We were forewarned that we would probably have to give our name and wait. They told us to go to Cornell next door (tasting room), enjoy a tasting and they would call us over there when our table was ready. (Cornell was awesome too!) Let me just say, the food was out of this world! We were expecting very basic meat and potatoes but it was anything but! There were 4 of us and we had: appetizers-wild mushroom skillet (freaking amazing), artichoke, and gator tots (that's right, gator not tater). All came with awesome sauces that we sopped up with thick sourdough bread. dinner- pan seared alligator (soo good!), ribeye steaks (the thickest juiciest steak I have seen at a restuarant) and chicken pot pie. Dessert: berry cobbler, and chocolate bread pudding (WOW!) Everything we ordered tasted amazing, the service was fantastic-it was just a warm friendly environment- and we can't wait to go back! I have been to countless restaurants, written many reviews, and can easily say that the Old Place is one of my top 3 favorite restaurants ever! I go here mainly for breakfast on the weekends, which is excellent! Bacon is heavenly, if you like super thick, rustic-style bacon. The home-made cinnamon rolls are to die for. Both breakfast and dinner menus are small but have all the basics. Everything is served in cast iron skillets. coffee strong and hot. Wash everything down with a "manmosa" which is a pint of champagne and a few tablespoons of orangejuice or a cold beer. Staff is always friendly. My favorite thing is a grilled cheese with bacon, tomato, and an over easy egg... The ambiance makes this place amazing... Some things to know: This restaurant is small. It is an old bar converted into a restaurant. Most of the seating is at the bar on a long bench seat or stools that you climb in to. You can make rsvp's for a table but they require 4 people to be there. Brunch on the weekends is extremely crowded. It opens at 9, I like to get there at 8:50.if you come between 1030 and 1130, it will be a 1-2 hour wait! (however, next door you can go over to the winery and have some wine or a cold beer and they will come get you when your name is called) Once you are in, enjoy yourself and listen to the live music! read more

The portions were large and to my mind, can indicate quality could be lacking. However don't let the size fool you. Hi, This past Saturday my husband and I took 2 friends to the "Old Place " for the first time. We were there ealry, around 9:15 AM. I had been there prior in December and had told them all about the good breakfast my cousin and I had then. Unfortunately it was nothing like that this time. I was embarrased and totally disappointed. The normally delicious cinnamon rolls were not hot and fresh out of the oven, but seemed more like leftovers from the previous day, slightly heated in the cast iron skillet. The frittatas too looked like they were scrambled eggs from the day before, put together with some pieces of ham, no sausage was found at all. The toast was not grilled like before, just toasted, and was delivered after we had finished our frittatas. Such a disappointment. I asked the waitress if there had been a change of personell (chef) and she confirmed that indeed they had changed chefs in January. Too bad.... My friend wrote a review of this restaurant, and received a response from the owner. His response has prompted my review. He did not address the specific issues that were outlined in the review - electing to berate the customer who wrote the review. The facts - Tim did not honor his word in seating us, not by a long shot. He gave us false hopes several times, for more than an hour and a half. When we sat at the bar, he said he would have to check a "list" to see if we could sit. We exchanged no words of frustration with this person while we waited. He does not accept any responsibility for the poor service; not keeping or caring enough about his word; or the quality of his food. An attitude of how full you are does nothing for the customer - most of us recall how such arrogance is short lived. read more

this place rocks!! we had a little bit of a wait, but it was damn worth it. they have a great outside setup while waiting too with people walking around playing instruments and singing. also a wine bar next door to chill at where theyll call when your table is ready. now for the food. I started with the noodle n cheese bake, which is made in a cast iron dish, along with several other plates and was terrific! then I went with the beef stew, also really good. It was super hard to figure out what to get, everything sounded so good here. One friend had the chicken pot pie, which I want to get next time for sure and another had the pale ale chicken. I'll end with the service. I sincerly felt as if I was at a family house. everyone that works here seems to love their job and it definitely shows! OMG...This place was amazing! My boyfriend and I went last night to celebrate my birthday - and it was incredible! We put our name on the list and walked to the winery next door and were greeted by Marley, the resident australian shepherd and a cute girl named Taylor who recommended a delicious pinot noir. They came to get us when space was available and we sat the bar and got to know our neighbors and the bartender Jenny - sweet as can be! My boyfriend had the ribeye and I had the fresh sea bass with mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. Absolute perfection. His steak was cooked perfectly and my sea bass was spicy and so tasty. My neighbor saw me salivating over the big bowl of clams he ordered and offered me one - wow..will definitely order those next time. I've been four times and each time is as great as the last. The service is usually friendly and the food is consistently good. While the menu is small, the quality of the meat is what stands out and why people no doubt keep coming (that and the kitchy-ness and experience). I've had beef stew twice (it's a very good beef stew with a lot of flavor; you can tell the broth or stock is made with attention) and two different cuts of meat (one was a special of the day which is purportedly rarely offered and was very very delicious, tender and cooked perfectly, the other was a mainstay on the menu and also good but not as tender and tasty as the former in my opinion). Side dishes are all right, not bad but I haven't had one that I'd write home about. I'd give five stars if vegetables and accouterments were organic and more options were available for paleo/ grain, dairy, etc-free folks. But, they usually are kind enough to offer a substitute like salad or veggies instead of potato sides or the like. I will keep coming back! Also, I've always sat at the bar and never tried a booth. Almost everyone I've sat next to has been pretty friendly. read more

This place is great. I'm not a breakfast person but I'll get up for this. The food is all around amazing. The Frittatas are to die for, the blue corn pancakes with a touch of sweetness are amazing, the sausage patties are great and large, the mimosas are HUGE with a good dose of champagne, and the prices are reasonable. It is a fun eclectic place to go and there is a nice wine tasting place next door. I drive all the way from the Westside to go here, which I wouldn't do for breakfast (my least favorite meal) if it wasn't absolutely worth it. Only downside is they are busy and it is a small place so they sometimes rush you out the door a bit, but it isn't enough to make me not want to go. Love this place!! read more

I should have reviewed this place a year ago, when fellow yelper and master food critic Bob Schriner of Forkandkey.com introduced me to the goodness that resides in those canyons. However I think it's good to frequent an establishment at least 5 times before committing an valid opinion and this one is long overdue. For one, The Old Place is usually packed, for solid reason. The food is not atypical comfort food. If you're looking for steak and potatoes your expectations will not be disappointed. Sitting there eating my filet mignon cooked to a what seems a scientific perfection, baked potato loaded with bacon and chive, I couldn't help but notice the staff having fun. Don't confuse this with bad service. They were on point, just like every time I've visited in the past. It's clear to me they love their jobs and their good vibes are infectious. After having a good meal, I sat on the porch, taking in the crisp clean air, and listened to the crickets and tree frogs. Yes, it's true, this place is that cozy. This is a five star restaurant in respect to quality, atmosphere and service. I applaud you! read more

If you go for lunch, know that the menu is very different than dinner. No steaks. No baked potatoes. Basically just salads and sandwiches. Which are still great... but we waited an hour and a half, hoping to have a steak, and then finally got in, and saw the only offerings were steak salad, steak sandwich (chicken sandwich, etc). Not the full menu. Which would otherwise be fine for lunch, but I wouldn't have normally waited an hour and a half for a steak sandwich, and my wife wouldn't have waited an hour and a half for a grilled chicken salad. BTW - we got there around 12-1230pm. If you're looking for breakfast, come way, way, earlier (we weren't looking for breakfast, but we saw many people who did want breakfast/brunch, but couldn't be accommodated). read more

A favorite ritual for me and a few neighbor buddies as we all live nearby and meet every week. I suspect we are not the only ones. Sit at the bar, order some awesome meat, drink some wine or Allagash Curieux beer (watch out -that stuff will kick your butt). The food, while always a bit smokey, is undeniably delicious. My husband surprised me out of the blue and took me wine tasting next door. Once nice and toasty, we ventured over to the Old Place for dinner. One of the someliers at the vinery informed us thhat there is only $5 corkage fee if we bring a bottle we purchased at the vinery to the restaraunt, which was great. From the looks of it, I did not know what to expect. The building looked very old and rather small, but once inside I found it charming and was quite happy that there was no music playing, so my husband and I could carry on a conversation. Once we got our food, I was even more pleasantly surprised. We got a calamari appetizer, which was very good, and I ordered a sirloin steak, which was fantastic. So was my husband's rib eye steak, which was juicy and flavorful. The most amazing part of the meal, however, I must say, was the chocolate lava cake with ice cream, which was baked to order in a skillet and was a great finish to a fantastic meal. Our waitress was very friendly and accomodating. The whole experience was very plesant and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, it's good for couples and large groups as well. Their booths are separated by tall barriers, so it feels like you are sitting in a private room. What a great evening! read more

Had a great dinner on a Friday made reservation for 830pm. Ordered the Mac & Cheese for an appetizer and shared it between 2 people. Definitely one of the best around so try it. Ordered the steak with a loaded bake potato and the potato is massive, steak was cooked perfectly. Also ordered chicken pot pie also the best around. And the dessert was the apple crisp it's more like a small apple pie that blew my mind and this guy enjoys some apple desserts. Make reservation and go you will be happy. read more

If you enjoy drinking a nice bottle of wine out of water glasses, eating a mediocre steak and being reminded at least three times during your meal that you have to be done by 6:30 before the next seating...then this is your kind of place. After hiking at Paramount Ranch I took a lovely winding road down Cornell and spotted The Old Place Restaurant. It was rather busy which is widely known and a great sign of a well established eatery. My friend and I were able to secure two seats at the rustic bar and ordered a beer and wine along with the Rosemary chicken sandwich and grilled cheese. Absolutely delicious! From the friendly staff to the wine, beer, food and atmosphere. What a wonderful find in my neighborhood of Agoura. I'm definely making more stops for breakfast, dinner or just drinks. Talk about a hidden gem. My wife and I came here for breakfast on a Sunday morning based on the Yelp reviews. This is a cool, funky place on a country road. I had what I though would be simple 2 eggs with choice of bacon. Bacon is an understatement. It was more like three thick slices of bacon steak! The smoky flavor was otherworldly. I honestly could finish only one slice of bacon, otherwise I would have OD'd on the rich smokiness. My wife had the Wild Mushroom & Goat Cheese Frittata - individually prepared in a cast iron skillet, with thin sliced crispy potato base and topped with a sourdough herb crust - which she thoroughly enjoyed. This is without a doubt the best breakfast we have had in a long time. I took off one star only because the seating is very limited. We can't wait to come back here for dinner some time. read more
