What can you even say about Old Place. In all honesty if I had a friend in Los Angeles for only a day and wanted to take them around to a handful of spots that reflect Los Angeles, Old Place would be on that list. Old Place has adapted nicely to the changes brought on by covid, and I was thrilled to see that the place was packed on a Saturday evening. The logistics are simple (wait in line, order, sit), and I challenge you to find nicer people running a restaurant just about anywhere. There are families, there are locals, there are a few tourists here and there, but if there's anywhere that embodies the quaintness that is the bubble comprised of Thousands Oaks, Agoura Hills, etc. then this is it. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? It cannot be at all understated how large the portions are at Old Place. Monster steaks, sides, cookies and salads stack up on what is otherwise a very simple menu, and while it isn't cheap, you're talking multiple meals worth of food here. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? I'll admit that nothing at Old Place blew me away from the steaks to the sides to the cookie, but that's not to say it wasn't both good and worth it. ***RUDE*** run do not walk from this place! They automatically charge you 18% on top of everything you purchase so the prices of food/drink as posted are not the actual price. There is absolutely no service whatsoever. You order the food from a counter kiosk then get a buzzer to fetch it when it's ready to go in a brown paper bag. Seat yourself, clean up after yourself (and even before you sit down). I was not offered any receipt after ordering and I watched others ordering and they were not offered receipts. It was only when I happened to look at my phone where there was an alert of the charge and I couldn't imagine how it added up so I asked for the receipt. The 18% charge was there and I also noticed they charged $16.00 for cinnamon rolls and it was posted $15.00. I asked nicely to refund the 18% as it wasn't right and the manager Christy completely flipped out on me yelling and calling me a nasty rude person for requesting this and not wanting to pay the extra charge which they claim is for kitchen staff etc. going on and on about how awful of a person I am. Well I believe in giving generous gratuity (by choice) for good service, a waiter but not take out food! The cost of the $23.00 BLT is what should be covering your kitchen staff Christy. Side note the BLT was the worst one I have ever seen. I couldn't even eat it, the so called bacon was a very thick nasty pork belly looking meat that was simply awful. I threw it all out along with a pound of potato wedges that were cooked halfway. I merely suggested nicely to Christy after she finally refunded the 18% (after dragging her feet for 20 minutes claiming she couldn't) that it should be added in the menu description that it's thick cut "bacon" and she screamed causing a huge scene for me to get out of there and this place wasn't for me! This is one of my husband and my favorite restaurant. I brought my husband here for his birthday and he was such a happy man. The ambience has an old southern feel. There is a Small 3 person band that comes to each table for entertainment. The food is awesome. The lamb was moist and had perfect flavoring. My favorite is the mac n cheese. It is crispy on the outside and cheesy in the inside where the cheese just keeps stretching. Make sure you make reservations because it's a small restaurant and very popular. Oh my gosh where do I even begin? I'll start with the food - absolutely incredible food. We ordered so much to share, and everything I tried was delicious. To start, our group had the creamed corn and the noodle and cheese bake. Both were incredible, and the portions were more than enough for four people to share, I had to do my best not to completely fill up on that alone. For dinner we had the rib-eye steak (with a loaded baked potato), the vegetable salad and the oak-grilled sirloin. What really stood out to me was the rib-eye steak - it was very juicy, tender and had amazing flavor. This is coming from someone who doesn't like eating a lot of meat too. For dessert we had the apple crisp (and they put a little candle in it for my friend's birthday). Everything was delicious. The restaurant itself is cute on the inside - small, dimly lit, rustic decorations and definitely requires a reservation (we saw someone who had to be turned away as he didn't have a reservation and it was already packed). In order to get there it's a little bit of a drive, but you get to take the scenic route past the Paramount lots (where they do a lot of filming) which was very cool. Love, love, love The Old Place! Although things have changed drastically since Tom and Barbara cooked up steak and clams for the locals, and then served "leftovers" as beef stew for the surfers on Sundays. Now, under new management (still a family business, from my understanding), the menu has grown and everything that comes out of the kitchen looks delicious! I cannot stray from the Old Place sirloin, butterflied, medium well... it's my go-to every time! The dishes here are enough to share. We were in luck and after a 10-15 wait we were seated. So much character inside and out of the restaurant. We ordered the Salad with Oak grilled Chicken and Beef Stew. The server confirmed that we ordered a decent sized amount of food. Complimentary bread and butter came out first and was delicious. OMG the Oak grilled Chicken was so tasty. The food is superb. I've been here for brunch and dinner and everything I've tried has been wonderful. The last time I was here my husband and I got the mushroom starter, I ordered the chicken and grilled vegetables and my husband got the ribeye. The mushrooms were succulent and full of earthiness. It comes with bread for dipping and cheese! My chicken was perfectly roasted with smokiness and very juicy. The herbs were well balanced and the char on the vegetables really rounded out the dish. I seriously believe this place is the gateway to Hell. The cook comes out and offers you the best meal of your life in exchange for your soul.... So i guess I have a nice seat down there. Created in 1907, this place is now run by the son of the original owner. What makes this place unique from other 'open grill' restaurants is that they cook on oak, which tends to be very messy to cook with but provides a great taste that the cook feels is worth the cleanup. So where to start... First, we went in as a group of 12 and rather than sitting in the cramped quarters they opened up the 'mail room' and let us all feast there... This I think (in the end) was the extra bump that was need for a 5 star experience. Immediately after being seated they started with the barrage of tasty food starting with several loaves of locally crafted bread, which the cook slathers with cheese and all sorts of good stuff... It came out hot, and as soon as the last piece was chomped down, another loaf was on the table. We looked at the appetizers, and decided on the Noodles and Cheese.. As expected this was pretty awesome, as it was cooked in a cast iron skillet (as are many things here) and made with noodles rather than elbow macaronni. On top was a ton of yummy crispy cheesy stuff..... It went down fast. At this point, we were all damn happy and just way impressed... The wait staff and the cook were quite incredible. They were in the room quite often checking up on us and making sure we all had smiles on, with thier witty stories and reparte'. The dinner, was amazing. I got the prime rib, which i usually shy away from because it turns out being a pink mess with globs of fat... This was so not the case here... Out comes this amazing slab'o'meat that was cooked, and then grilled. It not only melted in your mouth, but exploded with flavor... Several in the party had the Sheppards pie, which came out in a cast iron skillet, and in between mouthfuls all you could hear was 'oh my god'. I didn't get to sample it because, i really didn't want to offer any of mine, so i got what i deserved, and possibly a reason to revisit. Everyone was quite satisfied with what they got... Not one bad comment. Lastly was the desert... I can't even believe we did this because we were all spliting at the gut, but we had to go for the gold... We ordered one of everything, the pan skillet cookie, the apple crisp, the berry crisp, and this gooey chocolate magma cake thing that was off the chain... In the thirty years we've been going here this place has stayed true to its quirky roots. Constructed of random bits and pieces, and little bigger than a shoe box, the ambiance is what it's all about. You still have to sit at the bar unless you're a large party, and you still have to go outside to visit the restroom. But the food and wine list have been upgraded significantly. You can still get the clams as an appetizer and the steak as an entree. Those were the only two dishes originally. But now there are more appetizers, and the baked potato has grown from from the size of a golf ball to a softball. There's also a wonderful chicken entree. The wine list has also grown, from two jugs to a couple dozen nicely chosen bottles, most available by the glass. Service is friendly but constrained but the strict three-seating schedule if you have a reservation. If you haven't been to The Old Place you really need to go. It might be a little bit out-of-the-way for you but it's well worth the drive. It's in an absolutely beautiful area. This little gem has been there for years and years and it wears it well. Food is absolutely out of this world. Having no freezers anywhere on the property, fresh is what you're going to get. Everything is made by hand. An oak fire grill, is lit daily you can smell it from miles it's fabulous, with no knob that are able to adjust the heat, the chefs are masters at working the fire to ensure your food is mouthwatering. Often the fish is Caught fresh right off are Coast. The Old Place has become extremely busy place for people to gather mooring a night. Especially on the weekends. (but you better call for cove hours) It's my recommendation that you call for a reservation. You don't and you just show up which is absolutely fine, if they don't have a table or a place at the bar right away you'll on their waitlist. I love how to handle their wait, nope person takes precedence over anyone else. Many actors politicians people who think they're extremely important walk into that restaurant. And they go on the waitlist as well. People who feel so they're in a hurry have quite a bit of money walk into that restaurant and they go on the waitlist as well. They are not able to slip the hostess $100 bill to get pushed ahead of everyone else. They wait like everyone else. It's amazing and wonderful and how life actually should be. A fantastic rustic atmosphere, a truly well seasoned and cooked steak (they understand what rare is), a strong beer and wine selection, unimaginably good side dishes. Always crowded and difficult to get a seat, would it be better if they had more seating? No. The space is just fine the way it is. Tucked away in Agoura, it's worth the trip (heck, we went during a storm when the bridge was out -- but it was worth risking a mudslide to eat here). You will not be able to whoever you are dining with. It was one of the worst meals I've ever had. My salad was filled with enough pepper to repel all the rats in Malibu and beyond. My pepper steak was the backup in case a rat didn't die from the salad. What a shame to drown out the flavor of a great piece of meat. Absolutely, not worth the price. Neither was the wine list. As rustic as it gets. The old place is an old school style eatery with a limited menu that features a few seasonal items here and there. They are known for their Ribeye steaks and pork chops. Also not to be forgotten is their clam chowder, which is one of the best anywhere and definitely worth a try. We didn't know about the Old Place for many years. How'd we miss such a gem for so long?? The rustic ambience is the real deal. This is a historic building reminding us of the tales of the Old West told in the hills. You can smell the woodsmoke oozing from its pores. They keep the menu on the small side so they can serve quickly and with high confidence in the outcome of each dish. We've only been for dinner. One time we got a reservation ahead of time for one of the tables. The other times we've taken our chances for bar seating. I used to love this restaurant. It was charming, the rustic location was amazing, and the wait and waiting list wasn't even that bad given the bucolic setting. I went on 11/4/2022 with my wife. First time I've come back here since March 2020. I called in advance to inquire about the line and was assured there was plenty of outside seating. Now I know why. The "features" I described at the beginning of this review accurately sum up what this "restaurant," now an overpriced takeout stand, has become. When I asked for water after picking up my sack of food, I was advised I could buy a bottle, or fill up a plastic cup at a fountain. There is no wait staff, there is no metal flatware. You pay the same prices, get no service, and all the food comes together in takeout containers served in a grocery bag. I suppose if you enjoy taking a steak to go, this would be ideal. But the Habit, which uses the same notification buzzer the Old Place employs, has better service. At least the Habit has have fountain drinks and free water that doesn't come from a faucet! For the price this place chages, I expect more. I will not be returning. I hope they get back the charm they once had. read more

Haven't been here for many years but last night at about 7.45pm we decided to try for walk in seats at the bar. Wait was about 45 minutes but it was a beautiful evening and we sat outside happily listening to the frogs and soaking in the location. We were hungry when we were seated at the bar and definitely over ordered! A caesar salad starter would have fed at least 4 people ...we both ordered a steak and each plate with mushrooms, asparagus and a huge Baked potato was enough for two people. On our way home from the Malibu hills -- we randomly found this restaurant on yelp.com and decided to stop by and check it out. It was an interesting find! This cabin/lodge-like restaurant was nestled at the bottom of the hills (in Agoura Hills)...and supposedly a yummy place to have brunch/lunch or dinner! We parked in their lot behind the restaurant, signed-in our names on the clipboard, and waited about 30-40 minutes before we got seated (around 230 pm)! Can't believe there's still a line of folks waiting to dine here even past 2 pm... It was bustling and packed full house when we arrived. Fortunately, after waiting 30 min or so...a couple seats opened up at the bar and we were able to get seated (3 of us). The standard here is "wait wait wait"...because once we were seated, it took quite a while before the wait staff actually took our order. Goodness! After we placed our orders though, our food came out relatively fast (strange)! We had the following: (1) steak and eggs - My husband ordered this dish (he seems to order steak and eggs every time we get breakfast) and the steak came out nice and juicy (medium) and eggs were over easy (just the way he liked it). It wasn't anything out of the ordinary though, so his take on it was good. (2) frittata with ham sausage grilled onion and Irish cheddar - I ordered this dish and thought it was just OK. It was basically eggs scrambled together with sausage, bacon, onions and cheese. I honestly could have made that dish myself and it would have tasted the same, haha! I always make reservation via email, because although I found their phone system very time consuming, but they usually reply to emails quickly. We only tried their dinner menu and most of the food we got were delicious especially the clam appetizer. Most unique lunch experience I've had in a while. They have picnic tables spread all across the property between trees and other props around the lot. It's awesome and feels like you're in an old western town. The food, albeit a bit pricey, was delicious and well worth it. It was a take out and eat at one of the tables kinda set up. You get an alert pager, so you can sit far and just wait for the buzz. We got the steak sandwich and grilled cheese which were both phenomenal and the wedges are well seasoned and super flavorful. The grilled cheese had goat cheese in, which I hadn't had before, but it worked so well. Would definitely recommend this place and will definitely be back. Holyyyyy RIB EYE. The Old Place lived up to all the hype. A restaurant nestled in the middle of nowhere with odd hours and dinner reservations that are nigh impossible to get BETTER be good. Expectations were exceedingly high for the Old Place but they were certainly met, and perhaps exceeded. I made sure to arrive as soon as the restaurant opened and was able to get to get a seat at the bar without reservations. According to regulars here, the bar is where you want to be anyway. The Old Place is off the beaten path in Malibu. Pulling up to the restaurant, it feels like a scene from the old west--like you've traveled to 19th century saloon when a gunfight could break out at any moment. It's worth coming here for that sheer novelty. Dinner here was PERFECTION. All the comfort and heartiness I would expect with the ambiance. I started with the mac and cheese which was phenomenal--the goat cheese and breadcrumb crust put it over the top. I also had the clams which were huge and succulent, and steamed in the most delicious broth. The broth was so good, I packed it to go to eat later--I did not want a drop of it to go to waste. The star of the meal was the bone-in rib eye cooked to a perfect medium. It was one of the thickest hunks of meat I have ever encountered. The plate alone could probably be shared amongst many people. The accompanying baked potato was the best I've ever had--HUGE, buttery and baked to soft perfection. I think it took me three sittings total to finish it. Service was so friendly. The Old Place is a must for any Angelino or anyone looking for a unique dining experience with outstanding food.
