Ok, here's the follow-up--it turns out this guy is a flake. 9 months after the flooring refinish I notice a pretty sizable piece splintered off a plank. The floor is 80 years old so it's hard to say if his work caused it or not. But I will say, it never happened prior to his work. But I just so happen to see him at a liquor store, so I asked him to repair it and I'll happily pay for it. No, no, I'll do it for free he says. Great. We set up a time after 3 on a Monday. 3:45 rolls around--I get a text, "sorry I can't make it today." No worries, so we set up Friday 7-730 am. 7:30 AM rolls around--big shock, he's not here. I text him. He replies, "Oh sorry, I was at a flood at 3am this morning, and I forgot to call you, what other day works for you?" What a joke! Fool me 2 times bro, not a third. Maybe his heart's in the right place by offering free repairs but the dude should remember people's time is valuable. He should also remember to save the lame excuses, people aren't stupid. My advice, spend a little more and go with a company that stands by their work and keeps their appointments. read more

We chose Old World Craftsman to refinish the red oak floors in our 1950s home because of the consistently great reviews we read about their work. Mariano was friendly and responsive through the quote/proposal process, and he offered the best price for the job out of everyone I contacted. Unfortunately we had some problems with the finished work. Most of the work was done by a newer employee who needed more supervision than Mariano was able to provide while busy with other work. So there were mistakes: thick drips of poly left in the finish inside the front door, sanding dust trapped in the finish in the kitchen, and very visible unevenness in the sanding around baseboards. Mariano came over to review the work with me, acknowledged and apologized for the problems, and scheduled a time to have the same person fix what he could at no charge. But we then had to spend most of a day without access to our kitchen or our front door while the fixed areas dried, after already having moved out of our house for several days for the original job. The fix led to some new issues, like streaks and applicator marks left in the finish and rippling of poly along one of our baseboards. Mariano came over a few days later, was very frustrated and disappointed with the quality of work, and told me he'd redo the kitchen again. We asked for him personally to do the work this time, and he agreed. So we spent yet another day without access to our kitchen while Mariano and an assistant sanded and recoated the floor. It did look significantly better after this second round of rework. There was also some unprofessional communication while we were out of town for the original job. We asked Mariano to ensure that our wireless router stayed plugged in so we could keep an eye on the empty house with our security cameras after his team left each day. Everything went offline shortly after they arrived the first day, came back up temporarily after I contacted them, but then went back down and stayed down overnight. When I called Mariano the next morning asking him to make sure it would be fixed, he offered to give me "Mariano's accelerated course in English," insisted that his employee was just unplugging things to make sure he didn't bump into or break them, and then added that he didn't "need all this [expletive] babysitting." To his credit, he did then go to the house, found that his employee had tripped a circuit breaker, reset it, and called me to verify things were back up and apologize for how he'd spoken. And he was very apologetic and friendly again from there through when we got back, reviewed the issues, and scheduled and completed the fixes (twice). We trust from all the other five-star reviews here that Mariano himself does good work, and I'm sure he regrets how our job went. But based on the problems we had, we couldn't recommend Old World Craftsman to someone else. read more

Believe the hype! As a new homeowner I've had an harsh introduction to the world of contractors. Mariano (owner/operator) is a really really good guy who does really really good work. I believe start to finish took 3 to 4 days. Most of that time was letting the finish dry. Professional, on time, responsive and affordable. Just can't say enough about these guys. Would highly recommend! I gave his contact to my real estate agent to try and get them more work. I will absolutely recommend them to any friends/family for any hardwood work. Just can't say enough about them. Side note....toward the end of the project I was asking Mariano about what kind of chop saw he uses because I need to build a couple gates. He said he had one he no longer uses. I was expecting him to ask 60 or 80 bucks for it (which I would've paid). He gave it to me! Name brand Makita saw that he even dropped off. They installed an amazing accent wall, period correct trim, crown molding, and baseboards, on top of the drywall and much needed insulation throughout my entire house. We needed a large circular oak staircase and upstairs floors refinished. This required a tremendous amount of detail work - each step was curved, had a curved edge, and had molding below. Then upstairs there was a 20' edge overlooking the downstairs, also curved and more molding. Mariano and team did a great job. He came up promptly to give me a quote and started on schedule 2 weeks later. They used plastic sheets to isolate the area being worked on, taped plastic around artwork onto the walls, and generally did a great job minimizing dust. The team was very professional and responsive. We choose from 6 different stains, matching some other wood in the house. After stain, 3 coats of finish. Done in about 2 weeks. Each and every review I read through, detailed situations where the crew went above and beyond to ensure the customer was satisfied. I called Mariano in the late afternoon and scheduled an assessment for the next day. What took others an hour, he banged out measurements and a quote in about 15 minutes! Amazing job from the start by Mariano and his team. They came in mid-bathroom renovation for us, and were able to salvage our craftsman wood flooring from the bathroom to use and lay in another area of our bedroom that needed to be filled in. We had another company quote us for the same work and they said the only way to do it was to trash the bathroom wood and get new flooring for the fill in, which obviously Mariano disproved very quickly.
