Not a typical distillery tasting. It was slammed with tourists (I am one) and some of the tenders were a little impatient. It's nice to be able to sample some of their craft. But two of the samples are pickles and peaches. Those should just be samples, not part of the tasting. That said, the Ownby bourbon was good, I liked it a lot. I am generally against flavored whiskey but I enjoyed the espresso martini whiskey and root beer whiskey. I had sampled an ole Smokey moonshine years ago but didn't care for it. But sampling the razz n berry and the apple pie moonshines - I liked those. Walked out with too many bottles but I will definitely enjoy them over time. read more

We didn't get acknowledged at first. We went to two locations at the large bar today. Finally a lady told us we could try other bar areas since she already started. Tucker said he could take us, he even worked in two other couples after starting us. He did a great job explaining all the choices and helping with our purchase. We went here to taste a specific flavor. The reception desk told us we can go to the tasting bar and ask for wha we want. When it was our turn, we were told that he didn't have the flavor we wanted and could not add it unless we bought it. We grabbed a bottle to add to our tasting and then got kicked out. We are sorry if we crossed a line, but that was what we were told to do. Our friend went back to apologize as we are all business owners owners and understand managing risk. Intimate and less crowds! Drinks: great variety. Very tasty. We had 12 different drinks as our tasting. They had ranges of proof 40+ up to 100 proof. We liked the honey pecan and the blackberry. It was great having choices if we didn't want a flavor. They also have infused fruits or pickles. There was cream and non cream. Service: Fast, courteous and attentive. It was a pleasure having Ethan as our bartender. Ambiance: Very well decorated for the Christmas season. The walls of moonshine was extensive. Very well stocked. Our experience at first was great. Friendly service and reasonable prices. We bought the 5 bottles get one free with cooler deal. The gentleman checking us out wrapped them up behind the counter and put them in the cooler. When we returned home to another state the next day, we were missing almost $40 worth of product. I'd give less than one star if I could. Our bar tender, Aubrey, was horrible. He was extremely rude to myself, my husband, and another group at the bar. We had PAID for the premium service along with another group and the bar tender ended up making the other group leave after the second pour. He called the manager after we requested a new bar tender and the manager made the other group leave as well after HE was the rude one. Won't be back, for sure. read more

My short visit to the Barrelhouse was fantastic; we quickly did a tasting with Kaitlyn (who was so funny and entertaining) and walked away with three bottles and a few souvenirs. The shop is a bit chaotic, but only because it is so popular. The tastings take place on a rotating basis - so you just have to find one of the three or so bars and hop in when the next one starts. For $5 you get 9 tastings (about 2.5 shots worth) and a coupon for $5 off a purchase - so really you can't lose! I didn't realize we would be trying a bunch of whiskey - I was expecting moonshine. So be prepared if you stop - but definitely do it; it was excellent and fun! read more

This is the Ole Smoky Barrelhouse, so you'll be tasting mostly whisky and not the usual moonshines. We walked in here as our first tasting pitstop, they have all merchandise when you enter. Then you just walk up to any bar with an opening where the bartender will start the tour. We had to wait quite a while because our bartender wanted to wait for more people to join before she would start. The other customers who were pretty snotty started to get impatient after a few good minutes, and another asked if he could just sample the Elderberry so he could leave and grab a bottle on his way out, which she immediately helped him with. It costs $5 per person and you get a $5 coupon that you can stack up and use toward any purchase at any of the Ole Smoky stores. We ended up stacking four of those coupons and got a total of $20 off for some moonshines at the next Ole Smoky store we went to, it was awesome. Your experience would be affected quite heavily by how informative and the kind of mood your bartender is. Our bartender was pretty tipsy, she would heavily miss the shotglass when she poured. I found that she was mildly informative with a recommendation on what kind of your food/drink you could use each flavor with. Doing it all day everyday, it's understandable that it's just repeating the same information over and over again so it would come off as unenthusiastic and quite robotic. I remember starting off with the Hot & Spicy Moonshine Pickles, it definitely tasted just like regular pickle juice, being 40 proof I could hardly taste the moonshine. For the whisky, I enjoyed the Salty Caramel, Tiramisu, but most of all, our favorite was the Mint Chocolate Chip.. We were surprised cause on the first sip, it is just okay but the aftertaste is freakin' amazing and leaves you wanting more. Compared to Sugarlands, I found that the ambiance here in Ole Smoky did feel a lot more chaotic and disorganized. read more

We went in for a whiskey tasting. It was $8 per person and I swear he said we got to taste 8 different whiskeys. We ended up tasting 12 so I wasn't going to complain. It was really fun. We tasted one with pickle in it. I didn't like it but my husband did. I preferred the cream based whiskeys. It was well worth the money to do the tasting. Very cute place! Huge amount of merchandise, lots of sales and lots of areas for you to taste! The tastings are very tiny, so everyone needs to get their own. I believe it was only five dollars for a tasting. They specialize in flavored whiskey and some of them were delicious! They had a salted caramel, a watermelon, strawberries and cream, peanut butter, and some more! They have great deals if you want to carry bottles home and they even throw in a free cooler I believe for three bottles. I am not a whiskey person, and my husband has enough whiskey to sell on his own! So, we opted to not take any home with us that day. It was very nice to sample their local whiskey though, and it was very crowded in there! There really was no social distancing, and that place was jampacked! Must be good! read more

We went here last night and had a good time. The staff involved in the whiskey/moonshine tastings were fun and all had good personalities. They had the $5 deal where you could try multiple kinds and then apply it to your order afterward. We bought six and got two free and a cooler, so less than $100 for everything...and for quality products. The salty caramel whiskey was sooooo good, as was the apple pie moonshine. They enforced masks and we felt they did pretty well with the covid restrictions, too. We're going back to the other Ole Smokey tonight because we liked it so much. read more

Unless you want to walk to the back left corner where Justin stood in a shadow waiting to take us to buzzed flavor Town. He and his other sampling officiant "the astonishing" Mrs.Chyna was the most knowledgeable and passionate flavor delivery people we have met in the 3 days of sampling. This man and I mean MAN needs to be appreciated and the lovely Mrs.Chyna are the reasons we will be returning to collect our free t-shirt as we have completed the gauntlet of getting our ole smoky pass port filled out. The alcohol was good too and stores with merch was nice. But Mr Justin and Mrs.Chyna we will never forget you. There are lots of booze tasting places in this area now. Pick a wine, pick a moonshine, pick a whiskey...but I am from Kentucky so I am going to pick whiskey. As a side note all bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskeys are bourbon. This being said this is not bourbon but whiskey flavored for the masses. But they do a really good job at it at Ole Smokey. You belly up to the "bar" with $5 and and ID and you will try a communion sized sip of 10-15 of the items they are featuring. The bartenders are fun and lively. But the booze is tasty...I never leave here without a bottle of the salted caramel and sometimes I tasted something extra that I like and take home. It is always a stop when we are in town. You will meet new friends and after a taste buy a tee shirt. Hey you are on vacation! Or buy 3 or 6 bottles on a deal. You only live once! read more

Big Steve was our whiskey pourer for the 5 dollar taste test and he did a fine job, friendly and fast enough for sure. They have plastic barriers up for Covid in order to separate you from Big Steve. We were glad they had this both for Steve and ourselves. We received about 7 or 8 mini shots for the 5 dollars and Steve gave each of us a 5 dollar printed out coupon that we used to knock the price of some whiskey from 25 dollars a bottle to 20, plus tax of course. They were out of a lot of selections when it came time to purchase. A couple of our favorites believe it or not were Salted Caramel whiskey and Mint Chocolate chip. These two are very popular with other patrons as well, according to Big Steve. Entrances/exits on 2 different sides of this location and this place is raking in the cash being on Main Street right downtown. I can't even imagine how much they make in a year here. Crazy. They have tons of merch to browse from hats and coffee mugs to stickers, hoodies, and shirts. Spend 5 bucks and do a tasting like all the tourists seem to do and you'll fit right in! read more

Interesting place, but it is like most of Gatlinburg -- it isn't as much an experience as it is a marketing ploy. Put some money down at one of the small bars when you go in and they give you have a sampling tour. If you get an interesting bartender, they make jokes and are entertaining. If you get someone just mailing it in, it is a little meh. I am not much of a drinker, so I can't really say a lot about the quality of the moonshine you sample. I will say that my dad and grandfather were legit moonshiners back in the day and I doubt they had anything like this available lol. Expect flavors like chocolate mint, butter pecan, caramel, salted toffee and, of course, favorites like apple pie moonshine. After the tasting, you will get either a hard sell, or the soft sell along with a coupon to encourage you to buy jars of moonshine. Incentives to purchase like a "free" cooler are designed to increase spending. You will also find a variety of other Distillery related items like T-shirts and other memorabilia. If you enjoy commercialized moonshine, it will be a fun experience and if you are like me and aren't really that interested in drinking, you can still have a good time looking around, sampling a few items and observing others. read more

We did a whiskey tasting with Red last night and she was a great bartender! The tasting is pretty quick, but it didn't seem rushed at all. They weren't busy when we came by around 8pm & Red took the time to talk through the different whiskeys with us and answer some questions. Jakob was also fantastic when we were doing some shopping afterwards. He talked through some of the flavors that were on the shelves, but not part of the tasting. Even tho it's my daughters 21st birthday, she ended up tapping out and watching her Momma finish up the last few shots. That brought lots of laughs from our hilarious "bartender" and fellow boozers. The guy serving us was definitely an enjoyable character that knew his product well. I was surprised that I enjoyed some of the flavors like Mango Habenero. Cookies and Cream was even good, as was the Rootbeer, Turtle, and Pecan. The only one that I didn't care for was just the straight unflavored whiskey. Otherwise, everything was very tasty or at least interesting and enjoyable. I had to go get lunch afterwards so I wasn't trying to drunkenly enjoy the other shops in the heat, afterwards. We decided to buy a few jars of our favorite moonshines and a few shirts and little trinket souvenirs.
