My review is just for the deli/food counter there. Did not get to walk through the shop portion. Anyway they do have a very limited menu on the deli. I decided to go with a hamburger and was way disappointed. They give you this tiny, soggy cardboard, pre-formed, frozen patty for $7. I hate it when places use those mostly filler hockey pucks for burgers. How hard is it to use fresh ground beef and a little salt and pepper? I will never get food from there again. read more

Great place to stop for a meal when on the road. Half of the place is devoted to their delicious olive and olive oils, which they allow you to taste. The other half is a cafe, which serve sandwiches, many of which contain their olive products. I had a muffaletta sandwich and it was great. The prices were also very reasonable. It's always fun to stop here on our way up or down I-5. We always stop to let our visitors get a sense of the olives, oils, spreads, and wines available to them up here. The staff are polite and helpful... though I wasn't thrilled with one server behind the counter telling another server that "Shades of Gray wasn't as raunchy as I'd wanted it to be." That might be something to talk about when it's a little slower in the shop. So many things to taste and purchase! Definitely make this a stop along I-5. read more

I have been a loyal customer (by mail) for many years but this is the first time I had a chance to pass through Corning and see the place for myself. I was expecting it to be bigger and that the products were all made on the premises but their store is really awesome, even if not every single thing in it is manufactured by Olive PIt. I did not buy any olives but I did go to the deli and a got a turkey-cranberry sandwich, which was delicious. I had a 500+ mile drive back to Los Angeles. The staff were all very kind. Nice for those unique combos you aren't quite sure you'll like. Very CLEAN! I have attended a few morning bible study sessions in their café, and have enjoyed their pleasant staff. Basic coffee, sodas, and latte. Cold frig for bottled drinks. Like other reviews have mentioned, we don't consider it a local go-to place for lunch or dinner. Burgers are small and costly. Sandwiches are basic deli but large. The toppings bar is fun, nice olive selections to add to your food, but doesn't change the small patties or high price. NO FRENCH FRIS. (Kids were bummed the night we tried it for dinner.) Will go again, will buy gifts for out of town friends, will enjoy a bagel and coffee in a clean place. :) read more

Traveling through California was as expected with my car full of kids. Needing a break from the 5, we stopped because of all the signage at the Olive Pit. A tad smaller of a store than I expected but after seeing, sampling and conversing with the staff, we are sold! Can't wait to order from them online! Superb milkshake selection, I wanted to try all of them! I settled for the pomegranate balsamic and it was heavenly. Nice, clean restrooms that I wasn't afraid to touch the walls or door. Love the Olive Pit. Has always been a stop on the way to SMF or on the way back home. Highly recommended to anyone traveling through the area. HOWEVER, now I feel a bit jaded. They have allways helped support local vendors that I have seen in the past and can't even begin to calculate the $ I have spent on milkshakes, olives, almonds of all type and referring people to this wonderfull store we are all LUCKY to have in our area. I'm a local northern Ca. small buss. trying to sell a BBQ sauce and can't get in there store. Reason: "overloaded with bbq sauce ". Checked the store last time I was there and saw 1 avail. The café serves sandwiches. I got the spicy black bean burger which was microwaved but still very good. I was able to get a whole wheat bun which was soft and fresh. Whenever I pass through here I am sure to stop at the Olive Pit. The black olives are worlds better than what you are used to at the salad bar and cocktail parties. It is nice and cool in here with a bar to sample olives and a new addition of a beer and wine area. I like the broken olives, a bargain at $3 for a massive jar but I always pick up a few different specialty olives. The cajun garlic olives are amazing. There is a variety of fruit, nuts, olives, beer, wine, spices and pickled vegetables. Stop in, you will find something you like here. They will ship your orders but the I personally find it too expensive given the weight of the product. read more

To top it all off they have a wine and craft beer sampling room, currently five tastings for $5, which was great. Kayla was very helpful and we enjoyed speaking to her about our selections. This is a must visit if you love olives and artisan vinegars. The olives are plump and cured perfectly. There have a great selection of stuffed and unstuffed olives and an incredible selection of vinegars. They are high quality and worth the price which is very affordable. I am not a big fan of their little diner area because the food is just okay, but I highly recommend a wine/olive/vinegar tasting before you continue down the highway. read more

I can't help but notice that the low star reviews are from people who either don't like olives and wanted something they didn't carry like gummy bears or people upset that they couldn't con the staff into doing something like opening for them after hours. So I felt compelled to give my review. I'm not a big fan of most tourist traps having grown up & lived in several tourist towns, so for years I've given Olive Pit a miss on my trips between Washington and Southern California. Just last week I stopped on impulse -- and was glad I did. The placed is packed with a huge variety of olives, olive oils, vinegars, nuts, jams and other mostly local area foods plus a nice selection of kitchen tools and other possible gifts. They have a tasting bar which could substitute for a grazing lunch, if you are so inclined, but I skipped it because I was short on time and there was just too much to study in the seemingly endless rows of shelves. I'm a bit of a foodie and love creating instant picnics and parties out of local cheeses, breads, olive oil and vinegar dips and spreads. I came away with artisan olive oils from various area producers, several flavored vinegars (pear, fig balsamic & peach), 3 different olive tapenades, pear preserves, fig jam, fresh roasted almonds and several other items. If I wasn't at the end of my vacation budget, I would have also picked up some of the kitchen tools and supplies. The staff kindly packed my various bottles and jars in a divided box and bags for safe travel. They also offered me another sample of some freshly opened olives. The staff was young and obviously not William Sonoma trained, but pleasant and reasonably attentive to the customers in the store. The small cafe restaurant attached to the main shop offered a limited and to-be-expected menu. Not some place to stop for fabulous dining, but better than a fast food break. Your best bet would be to grab some treats and crackers, snatch up a bottle of wine from a nearby winery and indulge in a picnic from a scenic lookout or rest stop down the road. It will be a heck of picnic! And I can attest that everyone will love a gift from Olive Pit when you get home. It's now one of my regular stops on the I-5 route! read more

muffuletta! From time to time my wife and I drive the 20 miles to Corning in order to enjoy one. Invented many years ago in New Orleans and still very popular there, it is apparently unfamiliar here in the West. Many of the negative reviews are based on people complaining that the food from the ordinary part of the menu is ordinary but who did not try the house specialty. A muffuletta is large thick delicious meat and cheese sandwich based on a large bun that has enough heft to soak up the juices from all of the olive salad you put inside your sandwich. read more
