This place gets overshadowed by it's New Haven competition, but it's falafels are just as good (if not better). There is a spicy falafel wrap on the menu that is incredible, and worth every second of my 30 minute drive to get it. The baklava is a little dry and not worth the price, but it's not a big deal. The place is meant to be a take-out location and consequently has a little of that NYC bodega charm to it, complete with dusty shelves and foreign groceries unevenly stacked near the make-shift seating. The staff is very polite and accommodating, even offering samples to waiting patrons on occasion. Visiting Milford for work and wanted to try a local joint for a quick takeout lunch. Shawarma is a favorite, and a middle eastern bakery near our home is one of our go-to lunch spots. I don't mind a hole in the wall or a dive, and with several good reviews I thought, why not? My impression: Blah Chicken Shawarma wrap was ok. Chicken was nicely flavored, but I bit into a big glob of mayo on my first bite. No wonderful garlicky sauce. No spice. Just mayo. The sandwich was mostly lettuce and tomato with some chicken and a few pickle slices. Where are the pickled turnips? Where is the garlic sauce the liberally ladle over the meat? Where are the middle eastern herbs? Where is the spicy sauce? Honestly, it tasted like something I could have gotten at Burger King. Not awful, but certainly not what I was expecting from a 4+ star rated restaurant. Baklava: Looked delicious in the case. Nicely baked and not too oily or soft. However, it lacked flavor and wasn't terribly sweet. The hummus was awful. An indescribable flavor made me wonder if it had been sitting in the case and gone bad. The accompanying pita was stale. The service was friendly and quick. The bottled uludag orange soda available in the cooler was a treat, and probably the best part of my entire meal! Oh man. I love middle eastern food. Some places it's hard to come by - while there are a couple of good places in New Haven, Milford is fortunate enough to have Olive Tree right here in town. And it's definitely worth a visit - even if you've never had this kind of food before, these guys know what they're doing so you can't go wrong. I had a kefta kabob wrap, which was nice and yummy. My friend had one of their platter dishes, which all looked tasty and fresh - it took a few minutes to put our order together (we seemed to wait too long), but there was absolutely nothing wrong with the quality of our food. Next time I'll get some shawarma or falafel. I also noticed they have a lot of vegetarian options, if that's important for you. Basically if you're familiar with Arabic cuisine, one plate will make you want to try everything else eventually. I won't say the food is bad, because it isn't. I will say that I was very disappointed. I got a falafel sandwich combo with baba ganoush and Syrian salad. The sandwich was great, but a little sparse on about everything and infuriatingly difficult to eat because it was a wrap cut into quarters. Two of the pieces were just rounds of sandwich that fell apart in either direction when you attempt to eat it. It was delicious, making the falling apart bits far more infuriating. I did not eat the baba ganoush because it was so bitter I couldn't taste anything, which was a shame. My wife got chicken shawarma on a hummus platter with yogurt sauce and Syrian salad, and it was an A+. The shawarma was pretty tender, the hummus was delicious, and she mixes up all the parts to make a really saucy salad bowl that I could eat until exploding (she shared hers since I didn't get to eat a lot of mine). Overall, I'd definitely go back, and when I do I'll get something else because that quartered wrap is just a horrible idea. Maybe I'll bump up another couple of stars if whatever other dish I get is more up to par. I'd recommend this place, but I would say stay away from sandwich platters, they're just a horrible idea. read more

I've been waiting for ages for a reason to get take-out in Milford. (This is difficult when you don't live or work in there.) I have been following Jenny F.'s advice since Yelp Day One, and I love Middle Eastern food. Finally! Olive Tree has super-rich baba ganoush and yogurt and cucumber sauce, delicious fresh salads (the Syrian salad is minty), yummy hummus (with, yes, odd and delightful pickles). The rice was tasty, and the cracked wheat (Freekeh) was even better. Definitely better food than Mamoun's, though that doesn't say enough, in my opinion. Not overly impressed with their shawarmas. The meat (chicken and Lamb) tastes decent but they aren't adding the extras that actually make it a shawarma (pickled turnips, French fries, tabbouleh etc). It's more of a chicken sandwich than a shawarma (lettuce, maybe mayo etc). The other stuff looks good though so I'll check it out again. And I'm not sure what the deal is with the spit. Maybe the heat is broken but after they sliced it they proceeded to cook it on a pan. I've never seen that before. read more

I've been to dozens of middle eastern restaurants across the country. Olive Tree is one of the BEST middle eastern cuisine places I have visited. I have ordered the same dish for the past 4 years and it is by far one of the tastiest meals I have ever had. I order the Lamb Mujaddara platter with hummus and baba ganoush. The lamb is served over a bed of rice, lentils, and onions. The hummus and the baba ganoush are creamy yet flavorful. I have on several occasions bought a tub of baba ganoush because of how amazing it is. The platter is served with pita bread and makes for a complete meal. I've also had falafels from Olive Tree and they are also very delicious. If you are looking for a tasty vegetarian option, I highly recommend the falafel. The service here is amazing- usually after I call in my order, the food is ready to be picked up within 15 minutes. I highly recommend Olive Tree to anybody in the area! read more

What can I add to the other great reviews? The place is awesome. It's a little hole in a strip mall, unassuming and approachable. Ordered the lamb and while I waited, the owner (?) offered up a small bowl with a falafel ball and I'm assuming what was their spicy hummus. The first bite has me pissed off......that I hadn't ordered the falafel for lunch. But the owner knew exactly what he was doing. He had me hooked with that sample and I will be back. Inside is this beautiful green color of perfect blend of herbs and chick peas. It is a 10 out 10. And hummus was so creamy and really stands out as home made. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed falafel so much I decided to order as an appetizer and a sandwich. My hubby ordered chicken shawarma platter since the lamb shawarma was not available at the time. I loved every bite of my meal, so well seasoned and fresh. I could feel the love and pride in these dishes. I always tried to avoid chicken on the menu, since most of the chicken breast experience has been tough and dry. But the chicken shawarma here is amazing, charred on the outside from the vertical grill, soaked up in flavorful marinate and very moist and tender on the inside. The owner must have seen that I was eating my husband's chicken, he even brought me a small plate of chicken shawarma for myself! The food is my standard comparison for all other Middle Eastern food I try... the falafel are moist and flavorful, the hummus is the best I've ever had-thick and creamy, portions are generous and the meat is perfectly seasoned. To give you an idea of the type of owners they are, just about every time I go in, they give something to eat or try while you're waiting... and it's not just me... I've seen them do this for others as well. The wait has never been more than 10 mins (and that was for a large order). The Olive Tree is a hidden gem in Milford! I've turned a number of friends onto this type of food, as I'll frequently order from here when I have folks from out of town... no one has ever not enjoyed their meal! I WAS a regular customer (Eating here twice a day). The short guy that works the lunch shift, has been very nice to me. But there is a taller guy with salt&pepper hair, who works the later shift, is the problem. VERY, VERY RUDE!
