I thought the rice it came with on the side were not great though. Rice was bland and on the hard side. Note that the place is takeout only and you have to wait on the sidewalk for your food. Got these via doordash and was pleasantly surprised! There's nothing like fresh pupusas but they did a good job of delivering them hot and with the cheese all melty. The plantains were delicious too and everything was sustainably packaged in compostable boxes and a ziploc for the cabbage. Also very reasonably priced! They don't go above & beyond and divert from the menu like in countries such as Thailand where they are nicer and will run to you. I had my hopes set high on this one (pregnancy craving unfortunately) I order the caldo de res - it was bland, vegetables (at least most of them) were broken up mush at the bottom of the container. This is one of those under-the-radar Mexican-Salvadorean restaurants peppering our ethnically diverse city, and I keep stumbling upon them. OK, 'stumbling' is not the right word because I'm always seeking out menudo. My tripe obsession needs to stop, but I continue on my quest in the wilds of the Tenderloin. OK, it's not that wild on this stretch of Larkin, just a little gamey if you know what I mean. Funny thing is I've discovered all sorts of meals in the vicinity - Little Henry's Italian Food, Aria Korean American Snack Bar, Yemeni's - not all great but interesting culinary adventures. Anyway, I came here with the hope of menudo, but alas, it was not meant to be as I was there on a Monday evening, and they weren't willing to gather some bone scraps for me. Instead, I went for the large $8.99 bowl of Caldo de Res, beef soup to all you monolingual peons, and while not quite as chewy as a satisfying bowl of menudo, it came close with big chunks of tender beef and vegetables (including chayote) treading in a hearty broth (photo: http://bit.ly/17wJ3j5). Like many from yelp, I made a trip to Olivio's for one goal. Carne asada fries.. oily, greasy, delicious carne asada fries. It's been a little over 10 years since I've had some so cal taco shop style carne asada fries, far too long. Although the fries are not on the menu, Olivio's will make them for you if you ask. Upon entering this fine establishment, guests will marvel at the wood paneling, and decorative Salvadorean items. There is a bottle of Tapatio at each table and a variety of hanging plants. Back to the food. Unlike so cal carne asada fries, Olivio's offers a more reasonably sized portion (see my uploaded picture). They also use a lot more cheese and less guacamole then what I remember from so cal. What I really like is that their fries are not the frozen pre-made fries, Olivio's serves hand-cut potatoes fried with no batter. Fantastic. If the intense flavors of the cheese and the oil of the fries is too much, just grab the salsa they serve with the free chips and give your fries a good drizzle of salsa. Perfect! They are cash only, but they have a ATM on site, so it was an easy fix. I ordered a Shrimp Super burrito which was around $8.00, yet HUGE. I ate 1/2 for lunch, 1/4 for dinner and the rest for breakfast! That's how big this was. It was so tasty, even the next day. They also come with chips and salsa. I would like to preface my review by stating that I've never eaten inside Olivo's and I always call in my to go order. The size, decor, and location of Olivo's gives it a distinct, "to-go," feel. With that being said, I really love Olivo's. Reigining from Southern California, I take my Hispanic food very seriously. Olivo's has the distinct feel of a good ole mom and pop restaurant, and the flavor to support that. Be wary of the negative reviews, a lot are based on a weird personal preference. For instance, one reviewer stated that the, "salsa was runny and a bit spicy for me, the chips had almost no flavor." The user proceeded to give Olivo's one star. The review is completely nonsensical because tortilla chips don't generally have, "flavor," and salsa comes in many different forms including, "runny." read more

They're open again! Love the papusas. This is some of the best Mex/Salvadiorian in the TL. Happy to see them back in business. Papusas are just as delicious as ever. I just wish they were open late. I'm in love again. With french fries. For the past couple of years, I've had a predominantly hate relationship with them. They added pimples to my face and inches to my waist. But I think I've finally forgiven and forgotten--or at least have reason to. Because of OLIVO's CARNE ASADA FRIES! My friends and I came after our first law school exam to celebrate, and the food was so good I didn't even think about my prospects for failing. The fries were fresh, the carne asada was deliciously seasoned, and the layers of cheese, guacamole, and jalapenos melted in my too happy mouth. I dare say these fries are even better than the bacon cheese fries at Outback Steakhouse, which are now a distant second in my book. GASP. We also had the grilled chicken and fried plantains as well as the green chili pork, both of which came with your choice of beans and hot tortillas. The grilled chicken was nicely browned, tender, flavorful and just perfect with the fried plantains. The green chili pork was super moist (think Hawaiian Kalua Pig) and had a small kick. So here's what's making me fat this month : Pupusas - Cheesy fat patties from heaven. I like the cheese and pork. They give you two in an order. So I'm probably going to die about ten years sooner that I would have, had I not discovered pupusas. Totally worth it. Shrimp Tacos - Also served in twos. Large amount of shrimp chopped into big chunks. Onions, cilantro, cheese, and a couple slices of avocado. Beef Soup - I get the half soup & pupusas meal. If you don't know, you put lime or lemon into this kind of soup, which Olivio's includes. They are very careful to give you a nice big piece of meat and a piece or two of each vegetable- corn, zucchini, carrots, cabbage, and either potato or yucca. Camarones Rancheros - Olivio's cannot be making money on this dish. 6 large, butterflied prawns in on of the tastiest "Ranchero" (tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers) sauces I've ever had. I spooned the excess sauce over the rice and pinto beans (also my favorite ever), then tilted the container to spoon up the last drops. Boyfriend also loves the shrimp dishes, and has their Camarones al mojo de ajo at least once a week. Steak - Big ass steak with onions, rice and beans. Or with fries. Or with plantains and beans. Or chopped with peppers, onions, and tomatoes, rice and beans. Or breaded and fried with rice and beans. Or shredded with eggs. Or shredded with peppers, plantains, and beans. Or with yucca and cabbage salad. Or with a cheese enchilada! ALL FOR $9.50-$10!!!!!!! Chicken - I thought they gave me a ton of chicken. Then I realized there was yet a second layer beneath it. I think their fries are okay, but I prefer to have the pinto beans and their rice, which is super tasty. Or I have it with their yucca, which is kinda like gigantic french fries. The chicken is also available in many of the same preparations as the steak. As if that weren't enough, Olivio's also offers several pork dishes, sole, tilapia, calamari, and crab enchiladas. AND they do breakfast. I haven't tried any of these items so I don't know how they are. But just reading the descriptions made me want to put the menu in my mouth. Pretty much the only thing Olivio's doesn't do outstandingly is decor. Take out is definitely the way to go. Besides, you'll want to eat at home so you can unbutton (or remove) your pants. read more

The 10 year old ordered a bean and cheese burrito and French fries, hey it's what she wanted, it keep her happy and I was the cool aunt for getting it for her haha. The 16 year old ordered 3 carne asada taco combo came with beans & rice. I ordered 2 carne asada tacos & a carne asada tostada combo with beans and rice. We all ordered a soda, it comes in bottle or can. The 10 year olds food was gone before I knew it, and the 16 year old even put her phone down to get up her plate. My tacos & tostada was delsh, the meat was seasoned perfectly, and avocado was fresh, this was a great lunchtime meal This is a cash only place, so if that bothers you, then go somewhere else, just know you will be missing out on some great food. But for a Mexican restaurant in the Tenderloin, the $7.99 carne asada super burrito is really top notch and can give many taquerias in the Mission district a definite battle. At first I was surprised to see that our favorite Vietnamese lunch spot had changed to a Mexican/Salvadorian restaurant, but after having eaten there today I am thrilled to have this wonderful new place within walking distance of my office! They didn't change the decor from the previous ownership (read: sparse atmosphere of a typical TL Vienamese restaurant), however the place is now VERY clean, which was a necessary improvement. Go light on the chips & salsa and save room - you'll thank me. Pupusas - I nearly did a little dance upon seeing these on the menu, I love them so! We shared a cheese pupusa, and a pork & cheese pupusa as an appetizer. If you don't know what these are, they're like a cornmeal pancake filled with meat &/or cheese - so delicious! We were told that they are becoming "known" for their pupusas, and I can see why! $3.50 for 2 salad-plate sized pupusas Menudo - I had to try this soup as I had been hearing about its restorative properties and had been wanting to taste it. OH MY YUM. Rich tangy broth with big chunks of tripe, no hominy. Served with lime, chopped onions, and chile flakes. My friend is Mexican and her mother used to make Menudo, so from her experience she can attest that it was excellent, too. Pho, watch out, I have met Menudo and I love it! $6.95 for a bowl, 1/2 soup & 2 pupusa special for $7.95 Fish Tacos - HUGE PLATE - 2 fish tacos with a ton of fish, only slightly battered with cornmeal, so well cooked and spiced and not greasy. Served with beans (your choice of what kind) and rice. $9.95 for a huge portion It's right across the street from Brick, and is the anti-Brick - big portions, not expensive, no atmosphere to speak of. I was a disheartened that they charge 99 cents extra for more tortilla chips - perhaps they do this so folks don't camp out here to fill their bellies for near free. This place is a hidden gem. It's a hole in the wall and family run. They are a Salvadoran/Mexican fusion. Their burritos taste bomb. What do I mean? Well, you know when the meat tastes fresh off the grill and you could literally just eat these but everything else in the burrito is a bonus? Yes. All their ingredients can be standalone hits. Their rice. Their SALSA. Omg. Tasty AND Spicy. I could literally just have their salsa and chips. You HAVE to try their pupusas. They are like fluffy quesadillas but think of a bao bun but more flat?
