Found this random little gem on a Thursday night with my family. The decor is super adorable, and the restaurant gave out an intimate, small, family owned vibe. We ordered the arugula salad, seafood spaghetti, and ribeye steak. They were delicious and a generous portion! What an absolute gem this place was. I am floored. We arrived at 7pm and the owner greeted us and asked if we had made a reservation. We hadn't since we didn't know we needed to and he brought out a table and chairs to the sidewalk and set us up there. It was amazing. The ambience was lovely and the location made me feel like we were in a little part of Italy. The owner/host was so pleasant and explained the specials. I was then given the gift of their focaccia bread and I thought I was going to float away. Not kidding. BEST bread I've ever eaten in my life. The first basket was free and I wanted to order a second for $5 but was afraid I wouldn't stop. We ordered the tuna tartare which was fresh and amazing, the prosciutto/arugula pizza and one of the specials which was lobster and the most amazing wide noodles and marinara. Alta Marea is a quaint little restaurant in Pacific Beach across from the PB Library which is very nicely decorated with a handful of tables and a small patio area. Tables and ambiance was nice and open - decorated in sort of a rustic fashion with a few more modern touches. There's no bar service so you can bring your own wine (or beer) with no corkage fee. Our waiter, who I believe was one of the owners, was very nice, accommodating and attentive throughout the dinner. (We ate early so there were only a handful of tables being served.) I could imagine the service being a little slower with more tables but that's part of the family atmosphere. The first course was mussels in some sort of buerre blanc sauce (or the italian equivalent). The mussels were fresh and cooked perfectly and the sauce complimented them well without overpowering. Additionally, it was a simple dish - all about the mussels. No chorizo or other items thrown in to take away from the mussels. They served focaccia bread before the meal that was great with the sauce. For the main course, we ordered the Ribeye plate and Wild Boar Bolognese with Pappardelle pasta. The Ribeye was served sliced with tomatoes over a bed of arugula and was amazing. We were warned a couple of times that it was served sliced over a salad. Not sure the menu really conveyed this so it was a good thing she told us but it didn't matter (to us, although some people might not like that style). The steak was cooked perfectly complimented the salad and fresh tomatoes perfectly. Had a light dusting of sea salt that of course made everything taste better. But the star of the night was the Wild Boar pasta. This dish was so good I got teary eyed - no joke. The boar was just amazing with a very light cream sauce. The boar was fantastic on it's own but combined with the pasta it was phenomenal and the dish really came together! The only unfortunate thing about the dinner was that we were a bit rushed to make our play and couldn't spend more time there. But we boxed up what was left of our meals and finished it under the stars at the play downtown - which made the night even more magical. The staff was very helpful in getting us out on time. I don't know what authentic Italian is, but this is what I'd imagine it to be! I'm so glad PB has a new "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant and this one didn't disappoint. this restaurant is absolutely incredible!! oltre mare was recommended to me by my boyfriend's parents who spent a good chunk of their life in italy so i knew this place would be amazing but it exceeded all my expectations and more. the service was phenomenal and very attentive for how busy it was. and the food - the focaccia alone is enough for me to drive 45+ minutes for it. i ordered the wild boar bolognese which was spectacular & my boyfriend got a margherita pizza which he said was better than most of the pizza he had in italy. we also split the prawns which was also wonderful!! this restaurant was also so good about following COVID procedures as all the staff had masks on and tables are outdoors only and separated 6 feet apart. i felt very safe throughout our meal. i will definitely be back!! read more

Great food, good service. It's a family owned and run place. It's noisy inside (they should really work on that), but outside is nice. The food is delicious, it's the most authentic Italian food I've had in San Diego (I lived in Italy for 6 years, so I know my Italian food). I especially enjoy the parpadelle ai Funghi and the pizzas are good too. They also serve freshly baked bread which is delicious, I would tone down the salt just a bit. -1 star for the noise, +6 for the food read more

Nothing fancy when it comes to the inside or outside. I've lived in PB for 7 years now and just found out about this place a couple months back when I noticed a crowd always gathered outside at night waiting for a table. The Burrata starter was so fresh and the bread they provided had such a different sort of taste to it. For the main courses we tried the Seafood Risotto, the Lobster Ravioli and my personal favorite the wild boar bolognese gnocchi. All 3 of us were blown away by all 3 meals. My mom raved that it was some of the best Risotto she's ever had and I had to agree. The small chunks of wild boar would fall apart as they were so tender, the flavors to it were one of the kind and the gnocchi was made to perfection, not too big, just the perfect size. My parents were in town from San Luis Obispo and both said they could eat at this place every week! The menu is small, concise. The tables are close together, so be ready to hear a little conversation from the table next to you or even join in, like my dad did. Loved it, coming back, great spot for a date too! read more

Me and two other co-workers were in town for a convention. We searched Yelp for a seafood Italian restaurant. This was one of the choices. 4.8 stars. Must be great. Right? We drove to the restaurant and we did not know it was in your best favor to have reservations in advance due to the popularity. Marea still welcomed us with open arms. We were so grateful. Started with carpaccio which was fantastic - cheese was aged and delusions, mushrooms earthy and wonderful, weirdly loved the celery which gave a brightness. Three of us shared three larger plates: 1) Lobster ravioli: delicious and fresh. You get a solid amount of homemade raviolis and lobster tail with a tomato base sauce. Highlights the lobster without over crowding it. Wonderful. 2) Wild Boar Bolognese: My favorite!! Tons of flavor, was classic but also unique all in one. The noodles were perfect in every way. The sauce was not as tomato base as we thought but presently surprised with how it was. Absolutely delicious and flavorful. 3) Pizza Crudo Rucola: the best dough/crust I've had in a while. Perfect cheese on it, arugula gave an amazing bite. Tomatoes were the highlight, as is with all of their food because they use fresh product to ensure a great brightness in the dishes. I made a reservation by calling ahead a week and a half in advance of our arrival for six of us. When we arrived, they did not have our reservation. Even though she eventually seated us, she clearly was not happy about it. Then we discover they do not serve wine. No where on their website does it say it is BYOB. We were very disappointed. Our meals, however, were delicious except for the vegetarian pizza. The couple that ordered the pizza were lucky they didn't bite too hard into olive because they still had pits in the olives on the pizza. Everyone else enjoyed their meals. Disclaimer: food is 5 stars without a doubt. I have a moral dilemma giving this place 4 stars: the food was definitely 5 stars, but the service was so slow. It felt like we spent half of our time just trying to get our server's attention. This was probably because there was one person singlehandedly running the entire front of the house - so the lack of service isn't her fault at all. But it nonetheless plays a role in my review. For the food: 1. Ricotta cheese gnocchi. This was absolutely stunning. The gnocchi just melt in your mouth and you get this beautifully smooth taste. Highly recommended. 2. Spaghetti alla Vongole. Healthy amount of shellfish. The dish is very well seasoned and the herbs are absolutely spot on. I personally am not a big fan of vongole in general, but the person who consumed the majority of this dish seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. 3. Taglioni alla pescatora. Again, good serving amount of seafood. This was pretty standard in terms of presentation / composition but it served as a nice intermediate between the rich gnocchi and the light vongole. 4. Grigliata mista. Large amount of grilled squid, fish, and shrimp. The charring is spot-on and the acidity from the lemon cuts through it very nicely. 5. Pizza alta marea. I was a bit disappointed by the pizza because it just seemed like a normal pizza. It lacked a certain loving quality that all of the other dishes had. This is my go to date night restaurant, it's an authentic Italian seafood restaurant not the heavy spaghetti that American Italian places serve. The white clam sauce is delicious and me and my boyfriend fight over who gets to order it. They usually do mussels for appetizers on Friday which is perfect, save the bread for dipping in the sauce. It's BYOB which is saves a lot of money. The tiramisu is fluffy and perfect, sometimes we take one to go for the morning since it's SO good with coffee. The owners are really nice and sometimes the wife works the tables, super friendly business overall.
