Visited this location for the first time today as I am in the market to purchase a new parrot. I've visited the Santa Monica location numerous times and have always had an overwhelmingly positive experience. Some of the female employees at this location came off as standoffish and kind of rude. As a potential customer and bird lover I would have expected better treatment. Another thing that I found to be a bit disappointing was that 90% of the birds were already sold, but there were no signs on any of the perches. I had to ask about each individual bird to then find out that they weren't available. The other location posts signs to identify which are sold. Definitely will not return to this store. read more

I used to be terrified of birds. Quite recently I got over my fear by going into this store and trying to get used to big birds all around me. I went this past Sunday (Valentine's Day) and was satisified when it wasn't too busy in the late AM. One of the cashiers was pretty knowledgable about a specific bird that peaked my interest. The only negative thing I have to say about this store is sometimes they don't seem to know how to handle the little kids when they get a out of hand with the birds. It's a busy, busy store. It's not PETCO or any other big chain where you get some fake "hi, welcome to big box pet store". Everyone in the store customers and employees has the same interest..birds. The staff is quite knowledgeable about all types of birds, and your pet is treated like their pet would. The birds are everywhere, and you are likely to strike up a quick friendship with one of them before you leave. We go there for grooming, and the precious millet that our parakeets seem to crave. It's a bit of a drive from our house, but we wouldn't go anywhere else. Join the rewards club and get your card punched each time you go. I've absolutely loved Omar's and have visited weekly prior to purchasing my Princess Umbrella Cockatoo. I spoiled her with a big cage and tons of fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, millet and all. She was my #1 priority. After her 2nd birthday on a normal night going to bed I put her in her cage. Shortly after I heard her breathing heavily. I got up and grabbed her back out, in hopes of helping her but she instantly died in my hands. I went in to Omar's to ask what they think happened and they really didn't have any sympathy what so ever. Once again I loved this place, my Umbrella Cockatoo was an absolute sweet heart and my best friend. I just thought the the lady with long brown hair that always brings in babies would at least respond to my story about Angel. This is a great place for companion bird lovers. Their birds are on stands, and after sanitizing your hands, you can pick them up. They have many species and all sizes -- from parrotlets to large macaws. I just love to look at them. I have a Jardine's parrot who is 22. I bought a Senegal there named Astro, who is now six. He was still being weaned, so I visited him every couple of days until he was ready to come home. It was great -- he felt comfortable with me right away. Omar's also has a variety of pellets, seeds and treats, along with a good selection of food bowls. Their toy selection is wonderful -- Astro has many toys from them. Since I bought him there, he is entitled to free grooming -- wings and nails. They are very careful with him and do an excellent job. I highly recommend Omar's for anything bird-related. read more

Within a few seconds of me walking in, the staff told me I could handle any bird that I wanted . They had the hand sanitizer near the check out counter. They required everyone to use it before handling the birds. (Good Thing). As I walked around, I noticed every bird seemed very active. All the animals seemed well taken care of. I was actually impressed by how clean the floors were given the amount of "free roaming" animals. I also noticed a separate room where owners could leave their bird ($12 a night) if they went out of town. Only employees are allowed in these rooms. I learned that all animals that they kept were required to have proof of all vaccinations before they were allowed to stay. PROS - Friendly staff (first visit, hopefully this remains constant) - Animals well taken care of -Birds seem very healthy and friendly. -Bird Daycare. -you get to interact with all the birds. CONS- EXPENSIVE!!!! If you go here, get ready to spend. (But the impression from my first visit is that it seems to go back to the old saying. "You get what you pay for".) I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, I really did... I have been a customer of Omar's for years. I have spent well over 10,000 dollars there. They have a great selection of birds and their pets are all very healthy and well taken care of. I went in there today with the full intent of buying a new parrot with my gf and her kid. I have never been treated with so much disrespect in my life. The older woman working there was extremely rude to the point where even the other employees were shocked. One of her employees gave us a macaw to pet and hold and she shouted at us for simply following his instructions. She was insulting, rude and made everyone in the store uncomfortable. I honestly wish I could have taken back all of the times I spent money there in the past. I am still in awe at how they treated us, especially with a 4-year old who we brought to enjoy the birds. Never going back again. It's sad, I've been a customer there for about 10 years and spent alot of money there. I will be telling my friends of this experience as well. You can't get away with treating the people who pay your salary like garbage these days, that's what Yelp is for! PS: I shouldn't have referred to them as rude as "they" were not being rude. We moved from Northern California a few months back and were happy to see a bird shop not too far away from us (we have 2 birds)! One of our birds needed his talons and wings trimmed, so we brought him in. The lady who took him didn't even say hello or smile. Instead, she started preaching to us about how his beak was too long and how it was peeling and it shouldn't be (he just turned a year old, mind you). Then she started going off about what else is "wrong" with our bird, but I just ignored her and waiting anxiously to get him back. When another employee came over to help, the original girl turned her attitude around and was nice saying how sweet our bird is and he doesn't react like most of his kind. I was like "what the heck?" We got him back and he was totally fine. When it comes to their Harrison food, they charge $10+ more than any of the other places we've gone to including online. I like seeing the birds out of cages and being able to hold/pet them, but the store feels so cramped at times and when there are lots of people in there, you can tell that the birds and employees are overwhelmed and stressed. I think we'll only go when we need to have our birds trimmed or when we need a seed mix, so not very often. Pretty sad :( read more

In terms of prices, Omar's is super expensive compared to other places. For example, green cheek conure's are around $300....at my local bird farm, they're $150. Blue and Gold macaws are over $2,000 when at other places they sell for $800. Just wayyy overpriced. read more

We love Omar's but recently we had a really sorrowful experience when the little bird we brought home died suddenly. She was a beautiful, healthy cockatiel, very loving and we waited for her to gain enough weight before we brought her home. Two weeks later she died suddenly for no apparent reason! However, because I believe customer service is important to any establishment, I only gave it 3 stars because the girl that works there (Short Hispanic lady) was very short with me, uninterested, and not very helpful. Being new to bird ownership, I had several questions. Every question I asked her seemed like a bother to answer, and on occasion would walk away from me as I asked them. She needs to find a different job not involving public contact or customer service. The one in Cypress was much more helpful and accommodating to its customers. read more

I've been coming here for 2-1/2 years since my daughter received a cockatiel for Christmas. (Santa Claus gets his birds at Omar's) Staff: always friendly, informative. They love what they do and they love birds. It shows. Selection: very good, especially the bulk food for all kinds of birds - better quality and prices then large store packaged food for birds. Prices - also competitive, less than large chains in many cases, except perhaps for birds. HOWEVER, as I've spoken to staff, these birds are raised by Omar's until they are ready to go home with their people - well worth anything more you would pay. Every bird I bought here was amazing and tame. They get all the attention and love here that you know you are not going to get a wild bird like petco or petsmart. Because of that I don't mind paying a little extra for my baby birds. I bought a green cheek conure here and my apricot headed caique. They both are amazingly tame and lets you cuddle and handle them with out biting. They have great toys and the food is great. One stop shop. If you purchase a bird from them its free grooming for life so it does save you a lot of money! read more

I really like the Lake Forest Location. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. They always go out of their way to help even when they are VERY busy. They helped me take apart a cage and load it in my car. The store is always clean and I love the selection. However, I would recommend you stay away from the BREA location. They are so rude and will ignore you. I have been in there a couple of times to see if they have changed their tune and I still get the same treatment. They just look at you and never ask "Can I help you?" I don't know what their problem is since they are not nearly as busy as the Lake Forest location. I don't think it is just me because I don't know the staff and I always say "Hi" when I walk in. Anyhow, they have lost a couple of bird sales, not to mention supplies from me due to their attitudes. It's a very casual environment and the selection of birds and toys is strong. I normally get my Quail the "full groom" (wings/beak/nails). If you want to experience birds, Omar's is definitely the place to visit. It is a store that sells birds and bird supplies but anyone is welcome to hold the parrots and interact with them, like an aviary petting zoo. There were about 80 young Cockatiels, and several other larger parrots hanging out on perches and all of them were friendly. Staff was always among us assuring that none of the birds got mistreated and they were quick to help with little bird facts making this a really nice experience. I guess the word is out because it got crowded around mid afternoon on Saturday. It was a 35 minute drive for us but we will definitely return. Such a sweet place! read more

I purchase all my bird food and supplies at Omar's because they always carry what my avian vet recommends.
