They have many birds here and you can interact with them before you buy them. The main ones they sell are the cockateil birds. They breed them and they are hand taimed after you buy them because they interact with so many customers. Sweet sweet birds, a bit more expensive than average (when comparing it to swap meet) but its worth it. Well I went in looking to get a bird and got to hang out with it for awhile ended up being nippy...I started to get to know another parrot and the male worker was speaking rudely I me saying you could only give attention the the bird you want to get. This place is AMAZING and super professional! All the parrots are treated extremely well and taken care of from my observation. I was shocked to see how kind and sweet the parrots are. Have been buying our supplies for years from these wonderful ladies at Omar's. This past Saturday AFTER we lost our Cocketiel, I ran over to FINALLY get one at Omar's. Of course, Pam & Company were awesome!! I walked out of there 40 minutes later with a beautiful Pied Cocketiel which we named Riley AND a bunch of goodies for our new boy. I love how well they groomed my cockatiels! One of my birds is very, very high strung and they finished his wing trim quickly and handled him with care. They also pointed out how one of my birds (who I bought off craigslist,) had her wings trimmed wrong before, which explained a lot about the problems she was having for the last few months. We've got the bird from Omar a couple of months ago, and I went there to buy food for our bird. We took our bird too for socializing with other birds from the store. When we got off from the store with our bird, one of the workers stopped us and acting suspiciously about our bird-like we are stealing the bird from the store or something. Later she checked and realized that she was wrong, but she did not even say 'sorry' to us. I understand the confusion and she was just doing her job whatever, but it was wired & awkward feeling being treated like that. And the odd thing was that I wasn't the only one who bring own bird, there were other people that bring their birds too to buy food and trim wigs, etc. but she did that to only us. We have been to Omar's (several times over at least the past five years) with our daughter just to visit the birds. The workers at the store were very helpful when we were interested in getting a cockatiel. We visited almost every other day to visit our bird. We were new bird owners so any questions we asked were always answered. The environment overall was great. The reason why I'm giving a 2 star review is because a month after we took our bird home, he died. We followed everything in the care sheet. We knew what was harmful to the bird, and we were very diligent on taking proper care of our bird. When we first noticed something was wrong with our bird, we called Omar's and asked if they had a specific vet they recommended. They had one in Lake Forest and so we went there. The vet told us that there was absolutely nothing wrong with him, only that he was a little heavy for his age. The only thing they talked to us about was to incorporate pellets into his diet. Seeds are very fatty and pellets give them vitamins and nutrients. A week after this visit, he passed away. We called to let them know and they were surprised that the vet recommended a pellet diet since the birds they sell are mainly fed seeds. I thought that was strange especially since this was a recommended vet. The lady we talked to was busy so she asked if she could call us back but never did. We grieved our little one for a very long time. He passed away in April. We still miss him very much. I don't know if we just got an unhealthy bird, but I'm not sure if I would every get a bird from here again. read more

The only thing i liked about the store were the birds hanging around on the store floor. There were a couple that were caged, but most of them were sitting on their suspending racks eating some fruit or nuts. I didn't like: The selection: - Expensive! - Not a lot of great cages. They need more horizontal ones rather than vertical ones. I don't know a lot of birds that fly up more often than flying across. The staff: - they didn't ask me if I needed help - not very helpful when I ask them questions - the cashier made no eye contact with me when she rang me up, didn't ask if i found everything i needed, didn't say thank you or goodbye. Not friendly I don't recommend this place. I've heard people say that they LOVED it. Omar, the owner, has other locations so maybe they were referring to those. Mixed feelings about this place. When you walk in it's nice to see the birds out and able to interact with people. The layouts nice and it's easy to find stuff you're there for. Grooming is good and quick and you're out of there in a matter of minutes. But the thing that bothers me most is how rude a lot of these employees are. They don't greet you when you come in, they'd rather stand in a group talking amongst themselves. They lean against the counter and kinda just watch you walk around rather than ask if you need help or anything. Not only that but they totally go off on you if your bird has some sort of quirk-- they acted like having a dove as a pet was completely outrageous. My daughter found two abandoned fledglings on a busy hiking path in Fullerton and brought them home. We had no idea how to care for them so after calling numerous bird rescue organizations with no luck headed for Omar's to see if we could get some advice. Darleese was amazing and showed us how to successfully feed the little babies and gave us other tips on their care. She also wrote down several contacts of organizations that might help. Her recommendation of Sue at Avian Underdogs Rescue Association was very helpful and they agreed to take the babies to a professional so we feel very relieved. we also donated the little cage and bird food that we bought at Omar's to the organization. Thank you so much Darleese for your great care and tips and for giving us the confidence - that had we not found professional rescue - we think we could have cared for them successfully. Next stop is to see their WEST HOLLYWOOD SHOP! -There were more birds to hold , all of which were friendly. -Sanitizer was in a perfect place so that customers SHOULD know that they must sanitize. -Although the toys were definitely not the cheapest I have seen, they do have a great selection. -They did not ask if I needed help, but when I asked questions they seemed happy to help. (Seemed friendlier than Placentia employees) -Cashier that helped me could use some Customer service 101 training. **** MY FAVORITE PART OF THE STORE besides holding all the birds WAS their bulk food area where I was able to bring back different treats for my Zoo at home! I have been to many pet stores that specialize in EXOTIC BIRDS and the hardest JOB is to keep birds and their living quarters clean. They definitely do a good job compared to other places I have seen. Hopefully the birds' sleeping quarters is just as clean as their hanging perches. As far as cages go, it may not be the place to go if you want to look at a HUGE selection. It is definitely hard to house MANY cages in ANY store, especially if you are looking for a cage to house big birds. If you know what you are looking for, dimensions and all, then they most likely can special order for you. When purchasing a bird from a pet store OR a breeder, please bring your pet to an Avian Certified Vet within 48 hours of purchasing your bird (make an appointment right away), and ask the store you a purchasing the bird from if there is a store policy if the AVAIN Certified vet finds any illness.** There is ALWAYS a risk of brining a bird home with an illness... BUT there are many instances where the parrot/bird can become ill because it is not properly taken care of. Please make sure you understand how to care for a parrot/bird before even purchasing one! They need just as much, if not even MORE care than a puppy. I have not bought a bird from this store. My kids have been so excited to get a bird. We did our own research between cockatiels or budgies. They settled on cockatiels. I came to Omar's as a recommendation from a friend and when we walked in no one greeted us nor acknowledged us as we walked around. We didn't have many questions as we did a lot of research prior to coming in. We just wanted to know process for buying, etc. I went up to worker there who referred me to another worker. That worker told me they don't have any cockatiels ready now. I asked if I would be able to reserve or select (not knowing the process at all) and she deferred me to another worker feeding the baby cockatiels. The worker feeding told me and my kids to wait until she was done. We walked around the store for a good 20 mins. We decided to leave after no help. I've been to several bird stores now and I have to say the birds in this store are the most rambunctious and friendly I've met. Some attempted and some succeeded to jump on us when we were there and others mischievously pulled on the toy chains on the walls or ripped the labels off the product bottles. Perhaps it's because a majority of the birds there are babies, only a few months old, so they are more curious of people and seek out more human interaction and are more playful. Having bred birds years ago, my instinct is to always buy from breeders and get a better price. However, recently, this has led me to a couple of dead birds, unfortunately. I was somehow referred to Omar's and am very happy that I went there. Truth be told, I have never paid as much for a cockatiel as I paid there, but, on the other hand, I feel that, if something goes wrong, I always have someone to go back and speak to, instead of dealing with a private pary breeder. And also, the starter package that they give, when you get a new bird, includes one of their toys and a generous supply of seed, pellets and treat, which actually makes up for at least some of the price difference. Then you also get a free initial vet check. The sales girl, Amy, was also really helpful - she just seemed to love all the birds. They also groom for free as well, which is another plus. I would recommend this place to anyone, despite the price of the birds. read more

I've got a 23 year old Red Lored Amazon that has been around for the majority of my life and a 2 year old African Grey that was purchased from Omar's. I now take both of them to Omar's for grooming and have no complaints at all. The employees all know me now, are always welcoming, and about 99% of the time have some great feedback or ideas regarding the care of the parrots. The grooming is normally pretty fast and is MUCH more affordable than the vet! This is especially true for the grey who gets his stuff taken care of for free. :) One thing that sticks out about Omar's (Lake Forest) is that the staff is not trying to sell customers birds. Really, the birds sell themselves, so the staff is trying to find homes for the birds and go out of their way to make sure that prospective owners realize what they are getting themselves into. It's easy to want a parrot (or other bird), but rarely do new owners realize that there is A LOT of work and time that needs to be dedicated to the critters. Birds are weird moody creatures that don't necessarily "love" like a dog or cat, and getting to a point that they trust and look forward to seeing you is a very time consuming endeavor that does not always pay off. All in all, this is an awesome shop that I've recommended to a number of people who just want to play with some baby birds, or even own one. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for grooming and if you've got a bird you'll end up speaking with a number of other customers about any crazy number of bird related things. Toys here are typically a bit more expensive than other options, but they also do have a wide variety of options and stands. It's a good place to visit if you would like to pick a stand, see a cage, or just play with some baby birds that don't know any better than to trust every human that walks through the door. If you've got a bird and can't find somewhere to get it groomed than I would highly recommend Omar's. read more

We will start with I do not own a bird of any type. However I am an animal fan and Omar's has great birds, and pretty darn friendly parrots. You walk in and can touch and pet or hold, any bird you want. They have a hand sanitizing station for you (and the safety of the birdies). I admit to being a bit scared of the big macaws, but they are a magnificent looking bird. This particular occasion they had a Hyacinth macaw (along with other types). Wow, how beautiful. Royal blue, huge and big bright yellow rings around the eyes. This was one of the sweeter birds. I literally got to pet him or her, while the Hyacinth was sitting on a child's arm! The staff are fairly friendly and very knowledgable. The place is clean, you can see the birds get lots of special treats like fruit and nuts. They have a big selection of toys, food, chains, etc. for your feathered friend. Danielle spoke with me for quite awhile about the birds, the requirements, prices, etc. It sounds like a Goffin Cockatoo is the bird for me. Danielle also told me that when you purchase a bird from Omar's, you get included in that price, lifetime wing clipping and nail & beak shaving. There were some exotic bird owners in for this service and boy was it loud! I guess the birds don't love this grooming service. Overall, this was a fun and informative visit. I spent at least 1 hour there and was just amazed at all the fearless children. read more

I am a fan of this location! It's close by and the most of the staff is very nice and the store is clean and the birds are nice. Pam and Cinder are very nice and helpful. Also Dakota gave me very good advice on the Macaw is was looking to get. They have a great selection of food and treats. They also offer pellets for your birds diet. And great supplies and cages! Their toys are good but a little on the pricey side. But worth buying because you know they are safe for your bird and that is what is most important. After-all you get what you pay for! I also get my birds beek, wings and nails done there as well. I have had nothing bad happen with my birds when I have taken them in for those services. They do a great job! We love this place. We are new bird owners and received fantastic advice as we prepared to purchase our daughter a pet cockatiel. They helped educate us when we came in to look at birds and they were all very helpful. Most often we talked to Pam. We entered a waiting list for cockatiels and soon received photos of the baby bird who now lives with us. Our bird arrived and they hand-fed him for a couple of weeks until he was weaned and ready to come home. They gave us great advice through the first few weeks when we had questions and have made our experience a really fun one. They provide free lifetime grooming (trimming of flight feathers, claws and beaks) and are always happy to take a look at Kiwi, weigh him, etc. We look forward to our visits to the shop because of the great atmosphere and friendly, knowledgeable service. I am a bird owner myself and this is by far the best bird store I have ever been too. They have all of their baby birds out on hanging stands so you can go and handle/play with them. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about the birds. They are also very friendly and it is actually very hard to leave the store. I really have to stand up in defense of the employees being called standoffish and rude. We have purchased two birds from them. One we had to wait until it was weaned. So for months we would go an visit almost every day. We got to see how customers interacted with employees and birds first hand. Some of the customers dropped birds, would put birds on the wrong perches (with incompatible birds-one bird would attack the other and cause harm) and put birds on their shoulders they couldn't control. Some days it would be hours of people doing stupid things. Like letting their kids spin the stands with the birds on them. Or not watching what their kids were doing. Kids would come in an attempt to pick up baby birds by the beaks. Many people not familiar with handling birds will do all kinds of odd things. Like wanting to take full flight birds out of their cages. People have dropped birds, stepped on them, stole them, etc. Many people come in and think it is cool to put the big birds on their shoulders or multiple birds on them at once. They are laughing and taking photos with their friends/family without regards for the birds (many of the birds, are under the age of 6 mos. old). Most of the birds, at the stores are babies that are being hand fed. Many are not sturdy on their feet yet. A fall from the shoulders can cause a bird to crack their beak or chest bones. If you spend day after day, dealing with people mishandling babies you are grown to adore, you might be a little annoyed, too. Yes, some birds are cranky too. When you take your young kids to somewhere with a lot of activity, aren't they tired at the end of the day? Many of these babies are being handled by people who don't handle them correctly, are grabbing at them, waking them up when they are sleeping or want to handle them right after they ate. If a bird is nipping, it has usually given a warning sign, that was ignored. Like the bird may have had enough of being handled for the day. The employees work hard there. Some even take birds home to feed them overnight. As for the comment about birds being sold that are on the stands. That is a good thing sometimes. If someone has to go home and think about a bird, it may stop them from buying one that is t right for them. Many of the birds have deposits before they even arrive at the store. These people have usually gotten to know one of the birds that were sold. Then put a deposit on one. As for putting signs on the sold birds, in a big store like Lake Forest the birds may change stands daily. People put them back on the wrong stands, as well. So even if there were sold signs, the information may not be correct. There are many knowledgeable employees. Some may be direct, which may be offensive to some people. There are no other birds stores outside of California that are quite like Omars. Most cage all their birds or don't let you hold a bird unless an employee is standing next to you. Consider yourself lucky to be able to have an experience of holding such unique birds. read more

I have been going to Omars in LF for over 16 years, I would never consider taking my parrots anywhere else for grooming. They offer a huge variety of food, toys, treats and birds to purchase and pet. Not sure what the negative reviews are about so please ignore them.. the store is clean and there is NOT bird poo on the windows. lol I even witnessed professional window cleaners in there more than one occasion. I mean this is parrots we are dealing with.. this isn't a library. Parrots throw food all the time but they do sweep this store multiple times a day. I frequent this store weekly for grooming and or food and toys. The staff is amazing, friendly and extremely knowledgeable. They all greet me and seem like they genuinely care about their jobs and their parrots. I have even met Omar twice and he was just as friendly. They treat you like family and lets be honest, that is a rarity these days. They always groom my parrots with the utmost care, and always offer suggestions. Kim, Gloria, Cinder and Pam are the best!!!!! I would never take my parrots anywhere else and feel so fortunate that they are in this store. so Thank you Ladies for treating my parrots as one of your own. Visited this location for the first time today as I am in the market to purchase a new parrot. I've visited the Santa Monica location numerous times and have always had an overwhelmingly positive experience. Some of the female employees at this location came off as standoffish and kind of rude. As a potential customer and bird lover I would have expected better treatment. Another thing that I found to be a bit disappointing was that 90% of the birds were already sold, but there were no signs on any of the perches. I had to ask about each individual bird to then find out that they weren't available. The other location posts signs to identify which are sold. Definitely will not return to this store. read more
