Their estimate stated "repair is impossible" and they'd have to tear up the floor to replace the drain pipe and flange. I'm a DIY'r typically, but have recently found myself being a caregiver for a family member while working a FT job and simply didn't have the time for this project. I thought I'd throw it to a pro, expecting a $300 to $500 job and willing to go to $1,000 to get it off my plate and stimulate the economy. Sadly, they tried to take advantage of the situation. I guess the guy figured I was an idiot and would just pay anything, likely because where I live is a rather affluent area and I was honest about how hectic everything was at the moment. I did fix it myself, by replacing it. There were no cockamamy "shouldn't do that" type rigging. It was done properly to code. There was no need to tear anything up, and the job was done for $70 and a single trip to a local plumbing supply for a 6" replacement flange and items below that they loaded me up with. I cut it down to size, and simply PVC cemented in. Secure, tested with a dozen flushes, no leaks! Being a Saturday, they could not obtain a replacement for my faulty shower handle cartridge, but they did temorarily disable the cartridge until it could be replaced the following Monday. I had called another company out the previous day, but they left with the faulty cartridge still leaking. So I appreciated that Roto-Rooter made the extra effort to disable the cartridge. They finished the job the following Monday on time and efficiently. I will not hesitate to use them again for my plumbing needs.
