After many years of being disabled, I was able to regain my mobility last year through surgery. Now that I can walk again, that's all I want to do. Strap on my sneakers and walk, walk, walk. Unfortunately for my feet and back, my sneakers of choice are Converse. I have no less than 10 pairs, but not one of them is suitable for the type and volume of walking I'm doing now. I could have easily gone to a DSW or Foot Locker for walking shoes, but knowing myself I would have spun into a spiral of analysis paralysis, second-guessing, and doubt. Instead, I decided to visit On The Run, which I knew about from a former boss who was very particular about her footwear due to her own orthopedic issues. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by sales associate Rahnsom. He led me to a chair and began asking exploratory questions to get a sense of my needs. He took measurements and had me walk around a bit in my socks to see what my feet and ankles were doing. With this information he was able to immediately pull 4 shoes that fit perfectly. He helped me into each pair and had me walk around the store and go up and down a little hiking simulator to test how they felt. He chose very well. Out of the first three pairs, I could have easily walked out with two of them and been happy. Even the pair that I would have passed on was comfortable but a little too high for clumsy me. When I tried on the fourth pair, though, the Goldilocks in me knew that these shoes were just right. Regarding pricing, my particular pair of New Balance was $199. Coming from a Converse budget that may have seemed high, but I was determined to invest in my comfort and safety. Additionally, I place great value on the personalized service and information that Rahnsom provided. Had I gone to a "regular" retail store, I am certain I would have wasted money on the wrong shoe. For example, I had zero idea I was actually an 8 wide. I would have bought a size 9 shoe like I usually do then would have suffered - like I usually do - with a pair that was still too narrow in the front but with my heels moving up and down in the back as I walk. Out of curiosity I just checked online for prices elsewhere on my shoes and I consistently found them at $199. So, in my personal experience so far, On The Run isn't necessarily pricier than other stores. Even if it is, I can't put a price on being able to find the perfect shoe for my situation, in record time and with zero angst and indecision. read more

Years ago I had foot problems and my doctor recommended that I go to On the Run. I was happy with the results. A few years passed and I just had another foot issue and a different doctor told me to go there. Great customer service, no pushy sales and I realized that my interim buying on the web was risky because of the difference in seeing an expert fitter who knows what they're doing. Your feet change and those subtleties are only discovered by dealing with people who can help you work through the changes/issues. Another great experience and I can't imagine buying running shoes off the web ever again. My mistake. The difference is like day and night when buying from On the Run. The person I dealt with this time was Rahnsom. He was great and patiently listened to my unique questions about my issues. Happy customer again. BTW- my doctor shamed me for buying off the web after after having such an initial great customer experience with On the Run. I have tried to work with the store to return the defective shoes and they refuse. They are saying i have to come in person which I am not willing to do as their staff is rude and disrespectful. I plan to send the shoes back. UPDATE I got in touch with the shoe company directly, and it turns out the salesman on the run sold me the entirely wrong size. After telling me, I was a 9.5 wide he sold me a 9.0. My sister suggested that I go to this business to insure that I buy exactly the right shoes, and the salesman there did go into some detail about his professional knowledge and the high quality of the shoes; so I came away with two pairs of expensive shoes plus a couple of rather expensive inserts. Then a few days later I went into the Burlington Coat factory, which also offered shoes that fit comfortably. These look quite similar to what I had already bought but were sold at a dramatically lower price. If fact, for anyone who's OK with driving to the Serramonte mall's Nordstrom Rack, they have the biggest selection at 1/3 the price. As such, I won't be going to On the Run in the future, no matter how blessed or magical their products are supposed to be. read more

Tons of orthotic insoles along every wall and for me, I never have issues finding exactly the size of Hokas that I need here. Compared to your usual shoe place, the sales folks here are straightforward and provide a much higher degree of knowledge and competency in understanding your needs and getting you the right kind footwear, be it comfy running/street/casual/work/fancy shoes, insoles or just sandals. Parking can be a little challenging sometimes in this area but the Muni J light rail line will take you right here. read more

One of the most surprising things about my experience at On The Run was the very attentive staff who not only measure your foot and get you your shoes, but they are old school and sit down with you, unlace your shoe, hold the shoe open while you put your foot in the shoe, and then lace it up for you. I haven't had that kind of service in a long time. And they seem pretty knowledgeable about the their products. They do seem to work in commission, though, so it's tricky if you get helped by two different people on different visits. The two drawbacks I would mention is that they do not have a good return policy, only store credit or exchange. And when asked if they honor competitive prices, they only honor the manufacturer's lower price on their website. So even though I found the same shoe at another shoe store for $20 less, they wouldn't honor that price. I ended up purchasing from On The Run because of the great customer service I received. read more

I had a frustrating experience here that I think people should know about. First, they do not clearly state upfront that their shoes are non-returnable. That's a big deal, because most reputable shoe stores actually encourage you to try shoes outside and return them if they don't work--especially since many manufacturers allow returns. That's usually a sign the store stands behind what they're selling. My experience with the staff was mixed. The first person who helped me didn't seem very knowledgeable. Then I was assisted by someone who seemed much more experienced and confident--but unfortunately, the advice I got was completely off. The shoes felt great at first, but within about 15 minutes of wearing them, I was in serious, searing foot pain. Only after that did I realize there was a strict no-return policy, which felt pretty unfair given the situation. I later went to another (small, independent) shoe store, and they were genuinely surprised by what had been recommended to me. They also couldn't understand why a store wouldn't offer returns, especially when manufacturers often support it. That store made it clear that allowing customers to properly test shoes is part of good service and customer care. I wouldn't say this place is terrible, but based on my experience, I wouldn't go back. I'd strongly caution others to be careful--some of the staff may sound knowledgeable, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're getting the right advice, and without a return option, you're taking all the risk. read more

On The Run was a really great experience. Special shoutout to MJ who helped us out! My mom and I went in with the goal of getting her some comfy, supportive shoes to walk in. We special requested MJ since he helped my dad previously and my dad had a great experience as well. MJ was helping another client but right after he finished he started helping us right away. First he measured my mom's feet and got her the correct sizing (length and width are huge factors!). He got her multiple styles and was really knowledgeable about the shoes pros and cons. I was curious when he stepped away to know my shoe size so I started to measure my feet and he came back and ended up helping me out as well even though I made it clear I wasn't intending on buying anything. He helped us relace the shoes we were wearing to help us because he genuinely wanted us to have better support for our feet. MJ taught us about shoe sizing, support, correct lacing, etc. We definitely walked out knowing a lot more about the types of shoes we should be getting and my mom got herself a new pair of supportive walking shoes! Stopped in to look at some good walking shoes for an upcoming trip that will include lots of walking on cobblestones. The salesperson who helped me measured my feet and brought out three pairs of shoes for me to try. I ended up with a rather expensive pair of Hokas that's a whole size bigger than what I usually purchase, but the salesperson said it was a good fit for me. I just hope he's right because I just spent a whole lot of money on these shoes!! Service was good and friendly. The store was clean and neat enough for a shoestore. The only thing I don't care for is their "no returns" policy; once you send your money there, it's gone! You can get store credit or exchange your purchase within 14 days, but no refunds!
