I've recently been shopping, in store, at Fluevog in the Haight! I've worked in a shoe store for the past 4 years. The ladies, who have been excellent, in their dedication and ability to know when I want to be alone and when I need them, has been spot on! They are cheerful and friendly and they know their job. They deliver what I asked for and allow me time to try on, keep looking and purchase when I'm ready. I'm planning a trip next week to see what's new. I live in the foothills on the way to Lake Tahoe. I shopped here in the 2010's and had nothing but positive experiences. A recent experience, however, was way more puzzling. I did a phone order for some boots - the saleslady , Felicia, was lovely (Kudos to her for excellent sizing). The issue hit later when the boots got severely delayed in the mail, and I had a long winded back and forth with the manager. He declined to get involved on any level. Ultimately, he did issue a refund. BUT THEN....the boots showed and he rescinded the refund and re-billed me. On paper, this makes sense. But my experience with him during the 12 days that my $700 shoes were in limbo was nothing short of emotional whiplash. I'd recommend buying here in person, sure. If you want to do an online order I'd suggest a different Fluevog location. read more

For me, this is a special occasion shoe store. The designs are unmistakably Fluevog, and you can definitely justify buying for that fantasy someday party in your head. Yes, pretty pricey, but every shoe is very well made. They occasionally have very good sales, and many of the shoes are actually practical. I've given up on heels, but if you wear them, this place is your dream store. The looks aren't for everyone. The boots have this styling that says hipster renaissance gnome to me. They finally made some awesome chukka shoes in brown, pink, or green, with matching soles. Not high heel, actually comfortable, I'm eyeing a my second pair. They're really heavy, which my shoemaker tells me is because they aren't hollow like cheap shoes & sneakers. Did take some getting used to, as my shoe collection is mostly slippers with outside wearable soles. Sometimes you don't want to blend in. Sometimes you want to wear something that expresses who you are without uttering a word. John Fluevog Shoes. The design of each style makes you take a second look. The color theory (should you choose color) are often joyful, whimsical, and playful. You never regret buying them. Wearing them. Accepting compliments on them. The store is well stocked, there is a sale going on right now, and the staff are friendly. Some shoes can be resoled - so this makes price of these special shoes worth it when you do the math on the total cost per wear. We covered that math in a previous review last semester. Keep up. I feel good when I wear John Fluevog shoes because they are unique and special. I also completely buy into the company's feel good slogans, mission statements, and core messaging. So many famous faces wear and have worn these shoes. Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé. Me, you, that lady over there. (We can be famous in our own minds) Check out their stuff in person or online. I recommend trying them on in person because the fit can be drastically different from one shoe to another - at least it is for me. Get them. Very cool shoe store, but they don't carry anything under size US Women's 6, and the 6 seems to run big. So if you're a true 6, have narrow feet, or anything else, you might be out of luck. 5.5 will definitely need to go somewhere else. The lady working when we were in was willing to help us, and did help when we asked, but she seemed a bit reluctant/annoyed to do so. If we asked for something, she would make suggestions to us that we should go with another option or do something else that wouldn't require her to give as much customer service. The dynamic duo Felicia and Denny were working selling the incredibly comfortable stylish Fluevog shoes. The music had me tapping my 80s-loving feet and singing along with each fit. It was such a positive experience that... it was sooper positive. Felicia was lovely and full of suggestions about what type of shoe would be the best fit for a big girl like me. She was a great listener. I must have asked to try on at least two dozen pair of shoes in my odd size. Pair after pair, ask after ask, Felicia vanished down the staircase and appeared again with armloads of shoes. Then she would find some similar to what I liked about the ones they didn't have in my size. She also helped me to understand that even if we couldn't find the ones I wanted right there and even despite Fluevog's unique production model (they do not take special orders to my knowledge and once a run is gone, it's gone) I could find them if I checked back. I know that I tried on most every style, if not version of every pair of shoes in that store. Denny, fresh back from break was as gentlemanly as gentlemen come. He inquired as to my preferred pronouns. Without being pushy he actively listened and participated in the final selection process. For me, that can be a harrowing process. He made it easy. He is a gem. I've been shoe shopping kind of a lot. in the last couple weeks. For the first time, I walked out of there with shoes that I'm confident that I love. I fashion myself an "early adopter" of the Fluevog shoe, but I'm going to come clean here and admit that over the past decade and a half, I've had a love/hate relationship with Fluevogs. Let's start with the LOVE (picture this tattooed on the knuckles of one hand) I remember waaaay back in the 90s, when I couldn't afford them, Fluevogs were the holy grail of shoes for me. Back then, you couldn't find a more unique, well-made shoe. Got my first pair of boots (classic Fluevog witchy heel, Chanel-esque quilting). Gorgeous. HATE (tattooed on the other knuckles) I deemed them unwearable after one time. I still have these to remind me that just because a shoe is gorgeous, does not make it fit for your foot. More HATE: This happened to me a second, sad time with a pair of mary jane platforms. Could not even make it through the first wearing. LOVE makes a comeback: But then a pair of Angels (knee high lace up boots) came along and I was smitten forever. I wore these boots just about every day for years (back in the day, I didn't have anything close to the shoe habit I have right now). I'd like to take a moment and show reverence to the coolest, most beautiful boot/shoe I've never owned but admired from afar: The Grand National. If there were a shoe hall of fame, the Grand National might have its own room and there would be eldergoth chicks there worshiping at the altar. At the hefty price tag they were sporting back then, I not only couldn't afford them, but I didn't save up because there was always that concern that I could very well buy these lovelies and then be unable to wear them. Uh oh here's the HATE again: I'm not talking getting used to the shoe, ie breaking them in. No, John's shoes had this horrific tendency of cutting up my feet or putting them in unnatural positions causing agonizing situations. There was often no way of knowing this until you tried to walk a block in them. So taking chances with a 400 dollar boot? Wasn't happening. I still mourn the fact that I never owned a pair of GNs. I daresay potential suffering for the greater good (fashion!) Over the years, I've paid attention to the various styles and I've loved some except for one annoying detail, often the Dr. Seuss-esque heel that can have a cartoony effect thereby ruining an otherwise classic shoe. Then there was there were some reports from friends that the shoes didn't seem to be as well-made as they used to be. So, I put JF on the back burner as I explored and/or drooled over offerings by other designers (YSL canvas leopard print Tribute was 2008's Grand National, by the way. I am still prone to trolling ebay to find this shoe in a 6.5). What a preamble! But this is *shoes* we're talking about. So, you do understand (or you don't, and haven't even made it this far). LOVE coming back strong: John Fluevog, I'm back with you! And this store on Haight is possibly the best one I've stepped (a well dressed) foot into. I haven't crushed on almost all the styles of shoes in a Fluevog store since the 90s. I don't know what's going on, but I am loving it! Actually, I learned a bit about what's going on... You can see the styles for yourself on the website (I'm partial to the Baroques... that hexagon heel!!!). There are several designs of shoe made by a very small factory in Peru, so there aren't that many shipped to each store (these are exquisite, by the way and not on the website). Just a caveat that sizing seems a bit weird with the Baroques. A size 6 is pretty roomy on me and I'm usually a 6.5. So go for a size under your normal one. Size six is the smallest size they come in. Oh and do check out the reissues!! Love looking at the classic vogs, though I don't think I'd actually buy a pair because in my eyes, they seem a bit dated. Great for the kids who missed out on the first round, though! What makes this store special, though? Monica! No, I am not trying to put in a plug for my BFF- I just met her on my last visit. After paying for my Baroque Ruebens, we got to talking about the days of the almighty Grand National and that brought up mention of this fall's style, which she let me take a sneak peak at. I love when stores employ folks that are passionate about the brand itself. This girl isn't just trying to sell you a shoe! She dishes out advice on what works best on you and gives it to you real (yes, those new crazy wedges that are Grand Nationalesque are easier for us shorter gals to wear than our 6 foot tall sisters). I could have hung out with Monica all day and gone home with her to steal her GN boots. JF, I'll be looking at you come boot season. I'm due a new pair and I know what delights are to come! Let me tell you about a love story. Of a girl and her shoes. After a long day of shopping with several friends, they wanted to drop by the sale Fluevog was having. I was curious, having never been before, so I went along for the ride. The service was helpful and friendly without being pushy and I found the associate pleasant and inquiring without being forced. It was really quite a breath of fresh air to not get the car salesman vibe. The shoes... oh the shoes. Gorgeous. Pull on ankle high black leather perfection. And pull on's never fit me. But these did perfectly. Had they been on sale with the rest of their brethren I might have crumbled, bit the bullet and made the plunge, however at 365 dollars I just couldn't stomach spending that much on shoes I couldn't wear to work everyday cause hey, I'd be willing to give up a dollar a day. However, even with the discount, as they have an agreement with Dark Garden that purchases made at one entitle you to a percentage off within 24 hours if you bring in the receipt at the other, I just couldn't do it. I may be back for another sale, but full price Fluevog shoes are just too rich for my blood. read more

Not cheap (most pairs are $200-300) but sometimes it's worth paying a bit more for something unique. Most Fluevog designs have that funky edge with unusual heels and bold colors. Some of the designs are too clunky for me personally but of course some people are into that. I think the boots are a particularly strong point and anything that is Victorian inspired. The alternative looking designs and go well with the Haight St. vibe. I have a patent pair in blood red that would be at home at a goth club. And I had the most amazing pair years ago with pointy steel tips (swordfish shoes, similar but not identical to the ones here: http://www.fluevog.com/gifs_2/fluseum/swordfish_lg.jpg), my favorite pair for quite some time. I felt like I could defend myself with those shoes on. I wore them all the time years ago but now my Fluevogs are just for special occasions. After admiring these shoes from afar for a few years I have finally dug into the wallet and started purchasing. You only live once right?? These shoes are feet candy. And like candy it is really hard to chose just one... All the styles are beautiful, kicky, flashy, outrageous and creative. There are even styles for the less adventurous. The staff at Haight are super nice. They let you take your time and try on as many shoes as you'd like because they want you to be HAPPY with your purchase. And if you want to think about it? The staff are kind and don't make you feel bad if you walk out of the store empty handed. I wish I could remember names of the people who have helped us on our multiple visits because they have all been very nice, fun and engaging. They even have a couple pairs of black slacks that you can hold over your body so you can see what the shoes like if your wearing something that clashes... The store is clean, beautifully arranged and they encourage you to take pictures. The best part is my husband LOVES the shoes!! The only thing I am not too happy about is my daughter now loves Fluevogs. However we actually have the same size foot soooo... For the longest time I equated Fluevog with an upscale Doc Marten, so figured there styles weren't to my aging hipster tastes. After a yelper showed me her knee-high boots - sassy and sexy but oddly appropriate for any occasion - I thought it's about time to pay another visit. While the men's shoes were pretty cool, they still seemed a little too over the top for me, although their boots might entice me yet. But the women's shoes were something else: fun and flirty, boots and pumps, all with some bold yet feminine touches. The sales lady who was helping me wife was tremendously cool and ready to offer up alternative styles. Even when nothing seemed to be the right fit, she was casual but earnest in hoping to see us again. This is one of those reviews that I KNOW I'm going to regret writing. However, the fun-loving humanitarian in me has decided that I shan't be a selfish shoe b-tch. So here it goes... I'm not into fashion. I'm not into shoes. Up until about a year and a half ago, I was the kind of person who bought shoes in bulk from the local DSW. After a dear friend introduced me to the brand, I stalked the website for about a year before finally going into the store to try and possibly buy. My first trip happened to coincide with International Fluevog Day. Much to my heartbreak, I tried on about 6-8 pairs that day and walked out of the store with TWO pairs.The moment those Fluevogs blessed by extra wide, not-so-cute feet, I fell in LOVE! Cute, funky, shoes that fit my quirky personality AND are comfy?! OMG Fluevog. Where have you been all my life?! I say heartbreak because the day I brought home those Fluevogs is the same day I knew I had to toss out (donate) all my useless DSW purchases. Sadly, I made those donations without batting a single eyelash. Yes. Fluevogs are THAT magnifient! Yes, they're pricey. But I make room in my meager budget for these shoes. If I can do it, so can you:) Of course, the sales people are PHENOMENAL! I love my "dealers" with all my heart and shall the day come when I get married, I'm going to have a Fluevog table so that they can come and celebrate with me:) Finally, you know these shoes are awesome when, the Manpanion, who is SO NOT into pricey shoes, patiently accompanies me into the store, watches me try on shoes, and actually ENCOURAGES me to buy the shoes! After being a Fluevog fan for years I finally bought my first pair and boy am I a happy camper. I visited the store on Haight Street. After looking at all the cool, funky shoes with positive "embrace your uniqueness" messaging around the store, I saw the Yolanda boots with the red sole. They were super cute. Now, I usually don't spend that much on shoes, even though they were on sale, but I found myself drawn to those stand-out red soles. The staff couldn't have been friendlier or the store more inviting. When the sales clerk, Rora, asked if I'd like to try them on, at first I said no, but finally decided "what the hell." The boots were tight around my calf, which is often a problem since my calves are larger than the "norm." They offered to stretch them to fit. I had no idea they could do that. They said it would take some time and offered to ship them to me since I don't live in SF. How could I say no to that? I really liked them and they were pretty darn comfortable. Sold! They arrived so quickly. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised. My new boots were so lovingly packaged. From the shoe box itself to little gifts, a catalog, and a drawstring bag with an empowering message. It felt personal. Those are the little touches that make me happy. Like someone really cares and takes pride in the product and the shopping experience. We need more of that. A big thank you to Rora, everyone at the Haight Street store, and the Fluevog brand. I've loved Fluevogs since I was a poor newbie to SF in 1996. I'd save my pennies for them and cherished each pair. Life moved along and I sort of put them in the back of my mind. Decided this year to see what was new and ordered a pair of Investigators online. The Haight Street store contacted me same day, asking if I wanted to come in to be sure the fit is correct (various Vogs fit differently and as these are sale shoes, no returns except for credit, they wanted to be sure they were perfect). Great service! I went in a few days later and fell in love with them and another sale pair. I'll definitely be back and am digging up my older Vogs to see if they can be resoled. These are a splurge, they are art (they will make you smile and be noticed, not good for shy folks), they take some breaking in, but they are worth it. Some will make you say "woah, people WALK in those?" That alone makes a visit to their shop worthwhile. Many of their shoes can be resoled, meaning they will outlast most other shoes you own. Once they're broken in, you have a gorgeous pair of shoes for life if you treat them right. That makes the costs a bit easier to take, but even on sale, you'll be spending north of $100 or even $200 for a pair, be ready. Haven't yet had a chance to debut my Investigators out and about (darn you, rain), but right now seeing them on a shelf in my apartment makes me smile. Ohhhhhhh yummy. Love the Fluevogs. I bought a pair of boots here ten(!!) years ago. Two awesome things: first, being part of the Angels line, it says on the sole that they repel Satan. Second, they are still in fabulous shape. I have acquired a couple other pairs of Fluevogs since then. Their most notable quality aside from, well, quality, is that the heels are actually comfortable. I attribute this to the fact that they aren't stilettos and that they have rubber soles. To illustrate how absurdly wearable they are, after walking 2.5 miles the other day, including the type of hill that's so brutal it has steps, my feet felt perfectly fine. Lest you think I have bizarroworld arches or something, rest assured that after an hour of wearing stilettos I want to take them off and throw them at the sadist who invented them. In addition to being comfortable and high quality, these shoes are wicked cool looking. I've gotten tons of compliments on mine (especially the multicolored mary jane heels). If you're not a fan of color, you can find plenty of more conservative black/brown/white/etc shades as well. Generally speaking, the shoes range from flamboyant to something you could wear as an edgy version of business casual. The final note, of course, is that quality, comfort, and waaaaaay hot do not come cheap here. You will hand over a good chunk of money, so consider two things: do you think that buying a pair of shoes that will last for years to be a worthwhile investment? If so, will you continue to like these shoes for years to come? If it's a yes and a yes, you won't be disappointed with your purchase. read more

Background story for those of you who want to know what kind of people the Fluevog folks over on Haight in SF are - AWESOME! Specifically Felicia and Dee. Let me say up front, they are amazing. Last week my girlfriend bought some shoes, and in her excitement loved them so much she left the store wearing them! However, after she walked down the block she unexpectedly started to feel a blister forming on her right heel. She walked back to Goodwill across the street from Fluevogs moments later and bought flip flops to wear that day in hopes of breaking them in later. A few days later, we took the shoes back to the shop and unfortunately since she wore them outside-- even though they seemed to us to still look unworn--they were un-returnable. And we get that policy even though we were super bummed. I then tried them on in store thinking we maybe could keep since we are the same size, and I too felt something funky on the right heel. SO HERE IS THE GREAT PART! Felicia and Dee handled this in the most amazing way. Seeing our upset faces, Dee jumped in and was actually brian storming solutions in the store to our dilemma. Dee repeatedly said "We really want you to be happy, to leave happy". They offered to take the shoes to a cobbler to fix them. Turns out, nothing was wrong with the shoes technically--so there was no fix available. Fluevog was in their policy and rights to call and tell us "sorry, you'll have to resell online". But that isn't what happened. Felicia called and offered us a store credit, giving us the benefit of the doubt that these shoes wouldn't be comfortable for us. Fail-vogs! I used to really love buying shoes at the Fluevog on Haight. The last pair I had that were purchased on Haight were Babycakes. I wore them out dancing and the heel cup fell off! It ruined a rare night out with friends who live on the other coast. Since I wasn't in SF at the time I had to pay to have them repaired. This was after only having them for about 3 months and I didn't even wear them that much. I finally just threw them out since I never wore them because I was worried the other heal would fall off and ruin my night again. So embarrassing! I felt like it was a waste of $389! I thought maybe I just got a bad pair but it seems to me that these shoes are not manufactured in Canada and that many of them are now constructed with inferior materials and processes. In fact, feel free to visit Yelp reviews of many other Fluevog stores (Canada and US) and I think you'll agree that the quality is no longer worth the high end prices. It's been 10 years since I last purchased Fluevog shoes: the legendary and dark cloven-hoofed Grand Nationals - which I have in both the shoe and boot incarnation. They are daring, devious, and incredibly sexy. Who do they remind me of...? Especially when average the retail prices are higher, since the quality is higher, which is the case with these shoes. Be warned, as you walk in and find me near that sign that says SALE in big red letters. If you try to cross me I will take your bitch ass down! I will grab those 3 inch heels and impale you with them should you try to get the last pair in my size. I love shoes more than you and I am willing to prove it should I need to. Don't make me prove it!! The sales here are special. You actually get basic colors and styles on sale because their main gig is to provide funky color combos and styles that stand out. Well, I am happy to announce that my little family has added two brand new bundles of joy to our clan!! Their names are both Viardot, but I think we're going to call them "Lefty" and "Righty" for short and she and her twin sister were born a healthy size 8 1/2 and are just precious!! They both have those signature Fluevog funky little heels with not one, but two straps to adorn the tops of their mom's feet. Virtually all men have experienced the pain of shopping. Sitting and waiting while your wife browses, then hems and haws, then waffles, then doubts. And the infuriating part is when she walks away empty-handed. For me the shopping experience at John Fluevog was different. Yes, we were there for about 35 minutes, and I was bored. But for once I was also really impressed. The shoes are incredibly well-made by hand. And what impressed me the most was the women who worked there. I've never been in any shoe store--hell, any store really--where the people who worked there were so knowledgeable. They were also funky and nice, but they instilled a great sense of confidence with their knowledge of the shoes, my wife's foot shape and size (and issues specific to her arch and foot width). So although I did eventually got bored people watching, I was not bored listening to the women here figure out the perfect shoes for my wife. Thankfully she did not leave empty-handed. read more

It took a few blisters, but I've finally broken these puppies in and I love them (and so do random strangers on the bus and the street if I do say so myself). I'm mildly embarrassed that I spent as much as I did, but the flip side is that they're incredibly well-made, and I was told that I can get them re-soled for $50 and re-heeled for $25 when the time comes. Comparatively speaking, that's not too shabby, and they'll last forever. Salespeople were nice too. The best part is that these are subtle enough for work and cool enough for going out, and I'm all about multi-purpose. Yeah, I'm cheap, but quality counts too. read more

I LOVE this store. I actually met John Fluevog himself. In the flesh. He is a stunning man with really nice hands. He told me he created boot for women with legs like me. uh, yeah, I walked out of there with two pairs. Customer service is stellar. I cannot buy shoes anywhere else really. read more

Fluevog has some of the best customer service I have ever experienced. The first time I ordered from them online I received an email telling me where the shoes were shipping from and when they would arrive, got a call to discuss sizing, and after I received them I got a postcard in the mail thanking me for my purchase. I felt so cared for! I recently returned a sale item that had been sent from the LA store. The piece was somewhat worn and I emailed to ask if I could exchange it. They wrote right back saying that the SF store had the item in stock and that I could return it to them. The SF store followed up with me and must have sent the new item the minute they received my return because I got it faster than I even expected. You guys raise the bar for customer service! I won't even get into how wonderful the shoes are. I love this company!! read more

Holy smokes do I love this place. It's kind of scary how easy it is to drop tons of dough on quality shoes that will last a lifetime when the sales people are so great and accommodating. I have bought a wide range of sizes since the shoe styles fit so differently. Definitely listen to them about stretching possibilities, they can work wonders. I am on my feet for hours at a time at my job and some of their styles make it feel like nothing. I bought a pair of platforms that added six inches to my height with no incline so I can walk an dance in them for days. If you have a problem dropping a $200+ on a pair of shoes that are handmade and will last a lifetime either wait for their sales or get your disposable made in a sweatshop shoes elsewhere. I absolutely love Fluevog shoes! Each time I have visited the Haight store, I was treated magnificently by the staff. They are incredibly helpful and kind. I can't say enough about their excellent customer service. Are the shoes a bit spendy? Yeah. But they're worth it. Really comfortable, fun, and stylish. If you're the type of person that looks at the price tag a lot (I do), don't worry about being judged in this store. It's high end without the snob. read more

My first Fluevog love beckoned in a pair of Knee-High, Lace-Up, Red Faux Hair 3-Inch-High-Heeled Boots. My inner satyr was deliciously happy to be incarnated. My sister, on the other hand, looked scared. Yesterday, I tried on Wedding Cake White leather pumps finished with pleated trim and curved heel that made me, or at least my feet, feel like they'd stepped out of a Brenda Starr panel. Then: biker boots, creepers, sneakers, button down Victorian style ankle booties, and much more, all with a twist. Where your mind's eye expects a pump, JF throws in a Rococo inspired faux carved chunky heel. A dainty stiletto re-tooled into a smooth, arced, tusk of black heel. A simple Mary Jane transformed into cartoonish, Betty-Boop-Minnie-Mouse flavor, capped with the signature pedestal JF rubber heel and swirl. Unexpected studs, buttons, laces, ribbons, visible seams, swirls, curls, arcs done in whimsical, fanciful, artful, bygone inspired yet bellwether and surprisingly comfortable style. Remixed and reimagined... for your feet! was never this much fun. read more
