I haven't came here since before covid. I was at the sprouts grocery store and decided to have a salad from here. I've always ordered the taco salad with steak but decided on chicken. I get to my car and peek at my salad. They gave me something completely different! Ok no problem it's a mistake that can happen to anyone. They quickly gave me the correct one. Sorry but the chicken was not good at all. It felt dry, no flavor and it tasted like it was from the day before or earlier in the day. Maybe I'm exaggerating but I feel like they've lost their flare. Mexicali Grill is one of those places that I often pass by but never stop to check out. I decided to remedy that situation and give it a try after reading the positive reviews on Yelp. Having never dined here before, I wasn't quite sure what to order. The girl behind the counter was very patient and informed us there was no hurry. I asked about the fish tacos since I love a good fish taco. She said they were really good. I decided to order the combo plate since I could get two fish tacos plus rice and beans. I didn't realize that I could choose the kind of fish I wanted (salmon, snapper or shrimp) until she asked which fish I preferred. I selected the grilled snapper. The server brought out our food a little while later. It's nice to know that our food was made to order. I will say that the white sauce on the tacos was a bit spicy. I don't mind a bit of spice here and there, but if you are a person who does not like spicy food, I would definitely ask for the fish taco without the sauce. Just a suggestion, but like I said, I personally like my food a bit spicy. All in all, I'm happy I gave Mexicali Grill a try. I will definitely be back when I want a quick bite to eat to give me sustenance for a round of shopping in McHenry Village. ;) read more

Went here again. Love their new versions of burrito bowls . I got the power bowl with brown rice and veggies with added broccoli . I wish they had an added veggie option like they do with the fish and meat it was a little bland for my taste , but then again so is most most food. A few cups of hot sauce later it was delicious . Sooo. I love this restaurant, I come here all the time. But today is the absolute last time. My office placed an order for lunch. I ordered a salad without cheese or sour cream. When I opened the box, not only did the salad have both cheese and sour cream, but when we called, we were told they were "too busy to fix it." You're too busy to fix a customers incorrect order. A customer with a food allergy? You don't have time to fix it. Ok. I drove over to talk to a manager, which there wasn't one. The girl at the counter opened the box and accused me of eating some of it and said they usually don't do this but they'll make an exception. We wanted something healthy to eat after we picked up our son from school. I tried this place once before, and it was pretty good. That's the only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 1. This is what I still remember two months after our last visit at Mexicali Grill in McHenry Village: 1) Bad service #1: A smile or simple greeting is expected. Nothing here. The cashier didn't smile or speak one word as we stood in front of her reading the menu on the wall. Felt awkward, so I said "hello" to break the silence. She barely muttered hi back. 2) Bland food: No flavor in their power bowl with "garlic lime sauce" and salmon. I didn't taste any garlic, lime, or salt. I added more salt and lime, hoping to save the dish. It didn't help. My husband had the seafood combo plate. He said there was no flavor and everything tasted the same. I took one bite agreed. My son had the chicken burrito. Very plain, but it was the best out of all of our dishes. 3) Bad service #2: After a couple bites, I went back to ask for more garlic lime sauce. The guy who was previously clearing tables was at the cashier this time. He seemed just as unhappy as the girl who first took our order. He said, "Well, it's healthy, so it's bland". I said healthy food doesn't have to be bland. He slowly walked it back to the cook and asked for more sauce, but it tasted exactly the same. The cook is the third person I saw who looked unhappy. Management here should hire happy people - studies show that you're more productive when you're happy!. The food and energy here was just plain sad. I walked in on a Friday afternoon, to nobody there, didn't even know who the waitress is because I didn't hear a hello, or welcome. It is my first time here I stayed, so I kinda needed guidance, or maybe a suggestion. The waitress wasn't having it, so I proceeded to order something quickly. Ordered a nacho appetizer and the chips were horribly stale, and the plate was double dished because it definitely had just came out of the microwave. So disappointed in this place again. Came in with a friend and we ordered a strength bowl and a power bowl. Menue said it had a garlic lime sauce and barely cooked veggies. Service was very good and was fast for just one cook and one person waiting on people. The house salad was very good and would definitely have it again. The fish tacos were good but I'm not a fan of spice and there was a very spicy sauce on them. I went and got a side of sour cream, put that on them and that seamed to cut the spiciness a bit. Not bad, not bad...but not GREAT either. I know this isn't your traditional type Mexican food but I'd like to see them serve something other than chicken and beef (no carnitas?!). I'm also not crazy about the Mexi-cali thing. I ordered a chicken burrito and what was kinda annoying about the choices was that there wasn't an option that gave you all the burrito goods. For example, the Border burrito had the works but no guacamole and another option (can't remember the name) had guacamole but no beans. I ended up ordering the Border burrito, had to add extra guacamole and they only put like a drop in it. The burrito itself, despite the lack of guacamole, was not bad. The ingredients tasted fresh and healthy and I didn't feel weighed down after I devoured almost the entire thing. My mother and I go shopping in McHenry Village almost every time I come home and there aren't many food options within the plaza. We'll probably come back but more because we'd rather have that than nothing. read more

This is my favorite lunch spot in all of Modesto. The only place I can go eat and really know I am eating clean. The owners Ismeal & Katina are so nice and they are usually there to greet you, suggest some menu items and they even serve your food to you. I love local business that are family owned like this! They have a dish called the Bikini Bare Burrito, and it has to be the best thing on the menu. I could literally eat it everyday. Grilled spinach, bed of fresh lettuce, grilled veggies, black beans, jalapenos and add protein - you have a perfect meal. I am salivating thinking about it right now! I have nothing negative to say about this business, I wish there were more locations! I bring all my out of town friends here for lunch and everyone loves it. Tapatia salsa picante right there on the table,and i had ice water on the house with both fresh lime and lemon. I'm so glad i chose this place. The menu is big and offers grilled chicken,shrimp,salmon,and snapper which i will try next time. It was like having mom whip up a fresh lunch.my one taco had two soft grilled corn tortillas and was overfilled with fresh shredded cabbage,a thin coating of white sauce,a little chopped tomato and enough shrimp to separate the tortillas and make two tacos ...i had onitted the pico de gallo because it had cilantro..shudder. i cant wait to try the chicken and fish. There's the Power, Strength, and Conditioning Bowls each based around grilled vegetables and brown rice. I ended up with the Studio V "Bikini Bare Bowl". You don't normally associate zucchini, yellow squash, and spinach with your typical Mexican fare but it's a piquant and tasty dish. I don't think the owner is too enthralled with having a Qdoba open across the street - he seemed overly concerned with the lack of business the day we were there as it dominated any conversations he had with customers. Portions appear to be stingy except for the carne asada salad which is huge! It feels like a pretentious and snobbish place - not only the customers but the attitudes of the owner and employees. The owner was almost disdainful toward us when we were ordering. And one worker was wearing $500 coach boots (?). Huh?
