Awesome pasta at the farmers market.
    Wesley T.

I used to buy Onda Pasta's home made noodle to take home some years back when the farmers market was in the Ward Warehouse parking lot and the I lost track of him. Now at the newer location on Ward and Ala Moana he's back again. This is the best and freshest pasta you can buy bar none. I recently shared a plate of sauced noodles with my wife instead of buying uncooked pasta to bring home. The pasta was delicious and I was told that all of their sauces are good. I will be back.

I can still remember the moment I had my first handmade pasta at an Apartment3 Italian MUNCH event, it was love at first bite. Since then, I've been searching for an eatery that provides fresh, handmade pasta made to satisfy my love affair with Italian food, insert Onda Pasta. Social media has proven time & time again to be a wonderful source of invaluable information, the day of last year's "A Pinch of Salt for the Holidays" at Honolulu Night Market event, I scrolled through my Instagram feed & saw the answer to my inner fat kid's prayers: a gorgeous photo of Onda Pasta's Puttanesca pasta (Southern Italian cuisine: tomatoes, olive oil, olives, capers, and garlic). Since my first encounter with Onda Pasta, I've been obsessed with this brand & felt so fortunate to meet the loving couple: Andrea & Jessica Onetti. This husband & wife team are some of the warmest individuals you'll met; it's easy to recognize their genuine passion for introducing authentic Italian flavor to Hawaii & the fact that Onda Pasta uses, "... the highest quality flour imported from Italy & support local communities by using Hawaiian eggs & produce" makes me fall in love with this brand all over again. I can't wait for the day Onda Pasta has their own food truck, until then if you've been searching for fresh, authentic Italian food Onda Pasta is the solution to your foodie problems. Be sure to follow Onda Pasta on all of your social networks & one bite of their handmade pasta is guaranteed to make you a loyal customer.

7.21.13. Onda Pasta was the resident at Taste during this weekend's Night Market...& based off a recommendation from a friend, we decided to give this place a try! ...and it was well worth it! Tonight's menu featured a choice of pasta ($10) or gnocchi ($7) & a variety of sauces! I LOVE gnocchi so of course I had to go with that. I decided on a hearty meat sauce"; other choices were a pesto/macademia nut and another that I can't quite remember... The gnocchi was very different from any gnocchi that I've tried before! It was square shaped and the consistency was much more like polenta than the usually round, doughy balls that I a associate "gnocchi" with. However, it was still super yum & the sauce was a perfect pairing. This dish was served on one of those Chinette dessert paper plates...it may look like it's too small for a dinner but trust me, it's very filling and more than enough :) I def want to stop by the actual location and try some of the housemade pasta! Yum! Yelp 365 Challenge: #202/365

For my 100th review, I am going to review my favorite place to eat pasta...ONDA PASTA! You can find them every Saturday at the Ala Moana Farmers' Market, or at Taste on Tuesdays for lunch! I have eaten here three times and it gets better every time! I have gotten a puttanesca style one, a regular tomato sauce and basil one, and their uni pasta. They never disappoint! I can't wait to buy their noodles one day so that I can make some delicious pasta at home.

Onda Pasta is one of my favorite vendors at the Honolulu and Kakaako Farmers Markets. They always have a variety of different pasta and sauce combos for you to eat on the spot, or for you to take home, cook and eat! I've bought ready-to-eat items from them before, as well as raw pastas and prepared sauces to take home and cook. The ready-to-eat pastas are always cooked to perfection! Of course you wouldn't expect anything less... (btw, if you didn't already know, properly cooked noodles of any type is a MAJOR pet peeve for me). My favorite sauce from them right now is the corn pest, though I'm also a fan of the bolognese. Sauces are available for purchase in a container and are enough to feed 2 servings. Noodles are also available for purchase with a single container being good for about 2 servings. They keep for about a week in the fridge, and if the owner is there, he can even make recommendations on which noodles to buy based on the sauce you're buying/going to cook yourself at home. Only problem is they can and often do run out of stuff. So be sure to get to them as early as possible or just place an order ahead of time. They do accept credit card, so that's a plus as well!

Taste good but it's way to expensive for what you get. We are talking $8 for a side salad size plate, and not heaping either. Be prepared.

The restaurant itself is very small and, honestly, felt poorly managed on the Sunday night we visited. It appeared the manager had staffed the place almost entirely with high school-aged kids. To be fair, they were all polite and friendly, but they clearly were not trained professional waitstaff. The hostess in particular seemed completely overwhelmed and unsure of what she was doing. The food itself was average at best for the price point. Ambiance was okay, nothing particularly memorable one way or the other. We probably would have left thinking "meh, it was fine" except for one major problem. My wife ordered the seafood spaghetti, and the New Zealand mussels in the dish were BAD. Not "a little fishy" bad -- genuinely spoiled bad. The smell and taste were immediately obvious. We brought it to the manager's attention, and her response honestly shocked me more than the mussels themselves. She casually explained that sometimes they get "bad batches of mussels and you can't tell," as if serving spoiled mussels is just an unavoidable normal occurrence. That is not an acceptable answer from a restaurant serving seafood. To their credit, they did remove the dish from the bill, which was the minimum they should have done. Unfortunately, later that night my wife ended up vomiting after dinner. Thankfully it was not severe enough to ruin our vacation or require medical attention, but it absolutely confirmed our concern that something was wrong with the food. At the end of the day, average food and mediocre service are one thing. Serving spoiled shellfish and responding to the complaint with a shrug is another. We would not return.

The arincini was filled with pesto and feta perfectly fried and delightful, the bruschetta was so fresh with slices of roasted garlic and sundried tomatoes but the star was the lightly fried brussel sprouts served on a plate of balsamic reduction and I believe garlic aioli topped with Mac nuts and shaved cheese. Among the issues we encountered: * For two of the items we ordered off the menu, the server came back to our table to explain that the kitchen was "too busy" and as a result these items were not available. Neither was a complicated dish, they were simple appetizers. I've never heard this excuse at any restaurant before. What was especially annoying was that these were the two items ordered by my kids, both of whom are picky eaters on top of dietary restrictions, and therefore had limited options to begin with. * The menu says that substitutions are possible for a $3 charge. For a restaurant this expensive that's a little obnoxious, but fine, I was happy to pay it. Here again, we were told that the kitchen was "too busy" so they couldn't do any substitutions. That included the ridiculously simple request of putting a steak's sauce on the side rather than on top of the steak. I'm paying $55 for a 12-ounce steak and wanted to pay an additional $3 so that they didn't smother it in a sauce that my kid couldn't eat, but that was too much to ask, apparently. I ordered a steak for myself and asked if I could substitute a different vegetable, but this request got the same response: "too busy". I was even willing to pay the full cost of that vegetable as a side dish, but they were unwilling to accommodate. * When our steaks did arrive, my son's was literally almost raw. (In fairness, mine was a perfect medium rare.) I like rare steaks but this was ordered medium rare and was not even warm all the way through. It probably would be considered "blue rare" by standard definitions. * My wife paid $32 for the "scallops and shrimp" entree. It came with 3 scallops and 2 shrimp. Seriously? How is that a meal, much less a $32 meal? * We ordered three drinks (two glasses of wine and one cocktail). After 20 minutes of waiting, none had arrived. We needed to go up to the bar to order them there instead. * I very politely asked to speak to a manager so that I could explain our experience. I have restaurant industry experience and figured they needed to know about all of this. I was promised that a manager would call me within 2-3 days. It has been 6 weeks and I have not received a call. Needless to say, I'm not holding my breath. I won't ever be going back to Assaggio.
