Fresh, homemade pasta, and unique, authentic sauces. I think I just died and went to pasta heaven. Andrea is a super cool guy, setting up shop every weekend at the Kakaako and Kailua farmers market, selling his homemade pasta dishes. On today's farmers market adventure, my sister, my mom, and I set out for some cool local finds and came across Onda Pasta while looking for lunch. Andrea is super knowledgeable and passionate about his craft. We talked a bunch about pasta and I was surprised to find out that he makes everything himself! I purchased his mafaldine pasta (uncooked) and corn pesto sauce. Upon returning home, I was so excited to try out my purchase. The entire process took less than 10 minutes. Talk about a quick and easy meal! Andrea suggested I bring the pasta water to a boil and let the pasta cook for four minutes and that's exactly what I did. After letting the noodles cool I taste tested the noodles (of course) and they were perfect. Al dente! The perfect amount of chewy and taste. While boiling the noodles, I heated up the pasta sauce. The corn pesto was the perfect amount of sweet and savory. At the farmers market, Andrea suggested we add bits of crispy bacon and cheese to garnish our dish with. I unfortunately had neither bacon nor cheese so I made it my own and garnished it with baby tomatoes and basil from my garden. And let me tell you, he does not skimp on the pasta or sauce. One container of pasta and one container of sauce fed myself, my grandma, and mom comfortably. Picked up some fresh pappardelle pasta this morning and could hardly wait to get home to cook it up, and eat with my own fresh marinara sauce. One reason I stopped in was to ask about buying a large quantity of fresh pasta for an upcoming old fashioned Italian pasta party at my house. The guys were great, and answered all my questions easily. I cannot wait! I used to buy Onda Pasta's home made noodle to take home some years back when the farmers market was in the Ward Warehouse parking lot and the I lost track of him. Now at the newer location on Ward and Ala Moana he's back again. This is the best and freshest pasta you can buy bar none. I recently shared a plate of sauced noodles with my wife instead of buying uncooked pasta to bring home. The pasta was delicious and I was told that all of their sauces are good. 7.21.13. Onda Pasta was the resident at Taste during this weekend's Night Market...& based off a recommendation from a friend, we decided to give this place a try! ...and it was well worth it! Tonight's menu featured a choice of pasta ($10) or gnocchi ($7) & a variety of sauces! I LOVE gnocchi so of course I had to go with that. I decided on a hearty meat sauce"; other choices were a pesto/macademia nut and another that I can't quite remember... The gnocchi was very different from any gnocchi that I've tried before! It was square shaped and the consistency was much more like polenta than the usually round, doughy balls that I a associate "gnocchi" with. However, it was still super yum & the sauce was a perfect pairing. This dish was served on one of those Chinette dessert paper plates...it may look like it's too small for a dinner but trust me, it's very filling and more than enough :) I def want to stop by the actual location and try some of the housemade pasta! Tried Onda Pasta again at the April 2014 Kakaako Night Market. Over a year has passed since my boo-boo first experience with them and their offerings looked a lot better this time around. First of all, I paid $1 more than last time, but I got more than THREE TIMES as much food. The serving size went from two bites to a nice heaping mound of noodles, and I was full after finishing my plate. Not bad at all and reasonable for $8. The second thing I noticed was the wonderful texture of the noodles, as they were cooked perfectly this time! The alfredo sauce was quite bold, so much that it overpowered whatever flavor there may have been in the lovely pasta, but I'm not complaining. You could put the alfredo sauce on three day old refrigerated brown rice and it would make it taste good. Three stars for now...I'm still a little butthurt that one of their friends called me a fat, buffet-loving, overeating heifer in a five-star review to offset my previous two-star review when I complained about the obviously tiny portion. Onda Pasta is one of my favorite vendors at the Honolulu and Kakaako Farmers Markets. They always have a variety of different pasta and sauce combos for you to eat on the spot, or for you to take home, cook and eat! I've bought ready-to-eat items from them before, as well as raw pastas and prepared sauces to take home and cook. The ready-to-eat pastas are always cooked to perfection! Of course you wouldn't expect anything less... (btw, if you didn't already know, properly cooked noodles of any type is a MAJOR pet peeve for me). My favorite sauce from them right now is the corn pest, though I'm also a fan of the bolognese. Sauces are available for purchase in a container and are enough to feed 2 servings. Noodles are also available for purchase with a single container being good for about 2 servings. They keep for about a week in the fridge, and if the owner is there, he can even make recommendations on which noodles to buy based on the sauce you're buying/going to cook yourself at home. Only problem is they can and often do run out of stuff. So be sure to get to them as early as possible or just place an order ahead of time. They do accept credit card, so that's a plus as well! read more

OMG! My friend and I happend upon Onda at Taste Hawaii -- what a lucky find! The food was so delicious, well balanced and so good, I wanted to lick my plate clean! (Don't worry, I maintained composure). We each had a dish that the staff recommended, gnocchi alla Roma with puttanesca, tomato basil soup and black pepper pasta (I think that was the name). Its amazing that such simplicity, when done right is absolutely delicious!! We were bummed to find out that their stay at Taste Hawaii was temporary but that's how it works there, so we'll have to check the schedule and plan ahead. read more

Decided to try this farmer's market stand on my way home from work. Several people were in line so I figured it must be good. Signage stated pasta is all home made in Hawaii. They also took credit cards for payment. One man was in charge of the ordering and the other person behind the scene was the chef himself. Wait was going to be about 15 minutes. Ordered the $12.00 Gnoccha Ala romana-potato dumpling with tomato sauce mozzarella and parmigiana and Rigatoni Corn Pesto$10.00-corn, pine nuts, bacon and pecorino. Wait was over 20 min. Finally got my pasta and walked home. Gnocchi had good flavor but was not "melt in your mouth" (La Cucina's was better!) but it had great tasting tomato sauce. Portion was good size. Rigatoni was also flavorful but noodles in my opinion could have been cooked one minute longer. Portion size was good. read more

This place has quickly become a farmers market favorite for me! After seeing them around for quite some time, I decided to give in and I'm so glad I did. I tried a few of their pasta dishes at first and everything was always great. $10 a plate usually but it's always more than enough food. Lately I've been taking home their pasta and sauces. It's been LIFE CHANGING to have fresh pasta at home. Their corn pesto and puttanesca sauces are amazing! I try to bring my own tupperware for their dinner pastas or to take home sauce. Ah, the difference of freshly made pasta. It's subtle, but there's actually nuance in the flavor of the pasta, and it can really bring a dish to the next level. Onda makes fine pasta, cooked perfectly -- just getting soft in the middle -- with a variety of sauces that most of us will find kind of familiar but with different twists. I enjoyed the beef ragu linguini a lot. Then I tried the puttanseca gnocchi -- delicious! Not traditional gnocchi -- these were breaded with something -- but they are a successful variation for sure. They're at Taste for lunchtime through summer 2013, so check them out for sure! Get a salad or appetizer and a pasta dish and you've got a delicious, perfectly-sized lunch. They're also at Night Market. The food takes about 10 minutes once you order it. That's pretty slow for street food, but remember that's because they're cooking the pasta! read more

Onda Pasta and I met for the first time last night, at the Eat the Street event in Kaka'ako. Wow!!! I was a little tentative about ordering pasta from a food truck, but this is as good as it gets. You can just tell the difference between artificial and freshly made hand cut pasta, and this did not disappoint. Between the fresh noodles and the perfectly seasoned beef ragu (topped with cheese and fresh parsley), I was rendered silent as I practically inhaled this Italian goodness. Prior to this experience, Town in Kaimuki was my go-to place for pasta, but I'm happy to have another option as well. First let me say that coming from Italian family, I love to try most of new places always looking for "D" place to settle for my twice at week pasta needs. I went first to Kakaako Market on a Saturday close to noon and they were sold out so I went back yesterday to give a try. As I read the menu I ask the the guy taking the orders if they have some pasta with Italian sausage and he said not, so I said what about with meet balls and he said no we cook what we feel like. Although was not a bad attitude, but I did not received well that comment. Possible for my strong Italian look and accent maybe he thought I was just checking something else. I was hungry and I went there to eat. I order Alfredo Pasta with chicken medium size because I saw some portions and were very small. The pasta was not al dente, the chicken tasted and looked like it was boiled and mixed with the sauce that was very far from a decent Alfredo sauce. The portion was very small and surprise me that not even a small piece of bread was offer. For such small portions they serve, would be nice to offer to the clients that think their food is good, at least a piece of garlic bread. read more

Really delicious fresh pasta, plus friendly people! The only big down side is, they don't have their own retail space. I love fresh pasta, but I don't usually have the time or space to make my own. That's where Onda Pasta comes in! I love that I can purchase convenient to-go containers of their handmade tagliatelle at the Ala Moana Farmer's Market, as well as a few containers of their sauces (I like to mix the puttanesca and bolognese), and I'll have a tasty Italian meal in my own home. The mix-your-own stuff is very reasonably priced and comes with easy-to-follow instructions (basically, just boil the noodles for 3 minutes). The tricolor tagliatelle is died with beets (red) and spinach (green) for a nice visual, as well. I really hope that they'll expand to more farmer's markets (Blaisdell! Blaisdell! Blaisdell!) or other forms of availability soon! read more

If you've ever tried making your own fresh pasta, it takes a lot of work. Considering how much time and energy goes in to creating the product, I actually think the price point is quite reasonable. I happily buy both packaged pasta and cooked plates at the farmers market at Ala Moana and love these guys. such a cute couple and I feel like I've gotten to know them over the months. I was sorry to read that other negative review from Eat the Street but I encourage that gal to give them another chance! read more

My best friend and I are weekly customers at the farmers markets. They're so friendly and their selection of pasta is amazing. Our favorite? The pesto gnocchi or the corn pesto. Absolutely amazing. Delicious fresh pasta, and great service! We've tasted their pasta a couple of times, once at the last-Friday-of-the-month Kaka'ako food truck "Eat the street" event, and once when they were at Taste for lunch. We tried different dishes both times, including the puttanesca, their (Pro Bowl Special) Tennessee Titans Shrimp, and their yummy desserts. The shrimp dish included some sort of pesto truffle oil that made the pasta so delicious that the shrimp almost got in the way! It was that good. I'm not sure about the reviewer who complained about the portion sizes, but I found them to be appropriately sized for one, and more importantly, high quality and delicious. If you are: - A "big eater" (aka "big boned," or "working on my heart attack"), - Used to Cheesecake Factory-sized portions (read "enough for three meals"), or - A fan of buffets because they allow you to pile on as much food as you can stuff down your throat (see also "A wedding invitation?! Great! Free food!") ...then you might be disappointed by their portion sizes. The rest of us will be enjoying some first class pasta! Grazie, Andrea and Jessica, and keep up the good work!
