Ordered a very solid clam pizza from here for pickup - just to compare to Da Legna, which is in a similar style and class, I'd say that 163 has a slightly thicker, less cracker like crust with a nice chew. There's still some leopard spotting for flavor but less crunchy than da legnas crust. Big chunks of fresh clam, very meaty and well seasoned - definitely not too salty. We stopped in here for a late lunch/dinner situation on a Saturday. We'd never been before, but we read good reviews and a peek at the menu had us hooked on the idea. Upon arrival, we were surprised just how SMALL this place really is. There's a counter that separates the dining and the kitchen spaces and there's other wise four two-person tables or two four-person tables on the other wall, depending on how they are pushed together. We came in behind another group of two and there was a larger group eating so we ended up waiting a bit, but it was warm inside and so we just milled around a bit and waited. After this little rush, while we were dining, it cleared out and was empty so my understanding is that it's a timing thing. We ordered the brussel sprouts for a starter and three personal sized pizzas. We had the Memphis with half pork and half chicken, the Goat, and the Fungus Among Us pizzas. The brussel sprouts were awesome. I thought they were just what I'd expect of a well-handled brussel dish with good flavor and a few smaller, crunchier leaves though an overall soft texture. My boyfriend thought even higher of them than I did. All three of the pizzas were great. The crust is thin style, but not the burnt to a crisp thin of some other popular New Haven spots. This was thin crust done right, as far as I am concerned. The toppings are all very imaginative and experimental, but they really did work. Our of our three, the Fungus Among Us was our favorite because we are suckers for truffle anything really. I thought the Memphis with pork blended better flavor-wise, but I'm not a big chicken fan and my boyfriend disagreed. On the menu, I didn't see the option for anything smaller than a 12 inch pie, but we had personal sized ones and they were not 12 inch and didn't cost as much as listed on menu, this allowed us to try more of their many flavor combinations and would be my recommendation for how to go. As for the service, we found it amazing. It was friendly and attentive the entire time. It felt very welcoming and homestyle, where it's less about being a server-customer relationship and more about welcoming diners to your table, which I really enjoyed. Overall, other than a bit of a wait which is a given with a small spot at a peak dining hour (around 1:00 for late lunches) I was pleased with everything. For me, this pizzas beats the other popular spots like Frank Pepe's and Modern's without any competition. I prefer pizza with imagination and new concepts, so this place was a thrill for me. I don't live in New Haven, so I don't know if this is the best pizza or not. I do know that what they serve was really good pizza and if they are not the top spot, 1 6 3 should certainly be a contender. The crust is thin and light, just enough chewy texture to hold everything. The seafood with arugula was bursting with flavor, as was the mushroom pizza. The mashed potato and bacon was also phenomenal. All of these are cooked in what appears to be an authentic Italian wood pizza oven. The service was superb. What this place lacks is ambience. New haven is the pizza state so it's really good to have some amazing spots but a lot of these good pizza spots the wait can be over an hour. This restaurant is a hidden gem. New Haven is known for its pizza, and as locals we know New Haven as a place where the options for food is endless. This place is truly one of the highest on the list and is a must try. I will break this down just as I do in my reviews. 1) The atmosphere for dine in is small, but extremely neat and clean with such a warm decor that you can't help but feel comfortable. The open kitchen, which usually is a huge downside for places as you can see everything, just adds to this place as the kitchen is by far one of the cleanest I've seen. Employees are diligent with hand washing, and keeping everything extremely cleaned and organized. The lack of chaos even when it's very busy is an awesome thing to see. 2) The food is incredible. Hand cut French fries with house made sauce. Everything on the menu is great. The meatball sub, and chicken parm are to die for. The chicken and waffles is a unique play on a classic dish. Now for the pizza. The pizza is incredible, with options that range from the complete untraditional to the classics you can't go wrong. The crust is perfectly cooked and honestly one of the more consistent pizza shops here in new haven. The flavor of the sauce isn't too much, and the amount of toppings is a great quantity where it isn't overwhelming. With most restaurants that have this wide range of food on their menu you typically don't have this consistent of quality and taste that One 6 three has. For the price your paying, you are getting a bang for your bucks with both quality and quantity. 3) the staff are awesome. Friendly, considerate and just overall warm welcoming people. The chefs are great and will hold conversations with customers. The owners work in the shop and are some of the most down to earth nice people you'll meet. I'm looking at other people's reviews and wondering how on earth they can think this is the best pizza in New Haven?! My only explanation is that they either don't have taste buds, or they've only been to this place, because "the best pizza in new haven", this is not. Granted, it's a tall order to compete with the likes of Pepe's, Modern, BAR, etc, so that doesn't mean the pizza here is bad. It's just not the best. We ordered the Margarita and the Hannibal, and they tasted good, but not amazing. It's hard to strike a balance with meat-galore pizza, and the Hannibal missed its mark - too salty and oily, would have been better if less bacon (or none) and more meatballs. We didn't try the other dishes (or the weirder sounding pies), but perhaps we'll be back for those, because they looked interesting. It was decently priced though, so it's worth a try, since everyone has very personal notions about what constitutes great pizza, and I am by no means a pizza connoisseur. read more

I was in town visiting family for the Holidays and coming home to New haven it's always a must to grab a local pie! I decided to try something different so I ordered from One 6 Three. I called and ordered the pizza as soon as they opened. I wish I had more time to stay and enjoy the inside of the location as it was very industrious and had a unique vibe. The pizza itself I would love to give another try sometime. While I love that I could hold a slice upright and it was so put together that none of the toppings slid off, I did feel a little underwhelmed with the freshness of the pie. Like I said I ordered as soon as they opened so it was the first order of the day. The temperature of the pizza seemed a little off and the dough itself wasn't your typical New Haven style crisp. Something that sets New Haven pizza apart from others as well, is the sauce. The sauce on this pie didn't set itself apart from others. Forget about all the other pizza places that you hear so much about in New Haven. The pizza coming out of One 6 Three's brick oven is a strong contender for the top spot compared to the other pizza establishments that have made a name for themselves here in NH. One 6 three is a small little pizza shop hidden in the East Rock neighborhood. It's small but its dishing big flavors and large quantities of high quality brick oven pizza. As a NYC native, its hard to find great pizza. I've come to learn that NH pizza can be good but not comparable to NYC pizza. So its not far to compare the two. BUT One 6 Three is making a great name for itself and it truly serves pizza that deserves praise. I ordered the Hannibal: a meat lovers paradise: meatball, sausage, and pepperoni. The pizza crust was thin and crisp but not burnt. The dough had a great texture. There was copious amounts of cheese and toppings. The meats weren't not too salty and it just worked. The right amount of toppings that didn't make the dough soggy and still held together when you picked it up. The Scamp: a shrimp pie with arugula and bacon. What a great combo. Chunks of shrimp and bits of bacon that added a great salty smoky pop to this delicate pie and the a peppery arugula was a great foil to strong bacon and delicate shrimp. A unique pie with an authentic taste. For the apps, the fried cheese curds came recommended and they were delicious. Salty fried cheese dipped in their house made marinara or Ranch (the ranch dip is out of this world). Overall, One 6 three was a great experience. From the moment you walk in you are greeted by the whole staff and taken care of right away. It's a great atmosphere and I hope that this small pizza shop continues to grow and establish itself in the pantheon of NH pizza, so far its doing a great job. I will be back. read more

Newer kid in the City, so I had to give them a try. Easy access off of I91, much easier then other spots. Called ahead for takeout, and everything was ready in 20 minutes. Ordered a small broccoli rabe and sausage pie and a small salami, cherry pepper, honey. Splurged for their meatball appetizer and Ceasar salad too. Pizza was excellent, loved the crust with a wood fired hint, and a subtle amount of 'chew' and both pies toppings expertly prepared and topped. The meatballs were phenomenal, packed with flavor, tender, swimming in a pool of delicious red sauce and cheese. The salad was equally good, and I appreciated the dressing on the side eliminating soggy-ness. May be my go to spot when I'm in need of some new haven pizza, without the haste of going down a few more exits. read more

When this place opened, I was pretty amped to try it. It's located in East Rock, on the corner of Willow and Foster, so easily walkable, and who doesn't love New Haven pizza? It's definitely not bad. I'll say that much. It's hard to compete with the famous trio and DaLegna, especially when they are 2 miles away at most, but they do an ok job. Think of it like those are the masters and this place is the apprentice - learning, pretty good, but sometimes screws up a bit. I've had several pizzas there, along with the poutine. The poutine was pretty salty, and the fries were a bit thin, but overall not too bad. The pizza is typical (and delicious) New Haven style, though sometimes the dough was pretty thick. I'd go here before Modern or Sally's any day. The BYOB option is pretty cool, and there are plenty of liquor stores around to supply your dinner. However, the seating can be pretty limited, and in the summer, can get too hot with the ovens and the crowds. It's definitely worth a trip, and should be part of a pizza tour of the city. read more

For a pizza place the large fresh cut fries was the saving grace! On 2/15/20 I was visiting East rock brewing and my friends and I decided to order from this pizza place. We got the Large fresh cut fries with 3 homemade sauces, grandmas bbq, basil aioli, and bacon and hot pepper jam aioli, which were all very delicious and well worth the price! We were actually surprised how much we got and how the fried were not soggy being so many. Now for the pizza we were not impressed with. We got the scamp, and maybe our expectations were a little high for this pizza after hearing great things about it.. But it lacked in flavor, well I cant say it lacked in flavor because it was extremely salty. Being over salty it took away the other flavors that might have been on this pizza. The pizza was very good. You could choose from a very eclectic pizza or a traditional keep in mind. There is limited staff, and there is a theory behind keeping the staff limited. That is that if you keep the staff happy, they will do a better job and they will keep the customers happy so they don't need a lot of staff to work the staff was happy. They were very good, but there were a lot of them floating around however, the waitress we had was very attentive to us very limited seating but they did have extra seating outside, but it was very muggy and we chose the inside and we were glad we got there when we did because with five minutes there was no seating inside or outside there isn't that much seating anyhow so really a couple minutes can make a difference there but pizzas are making or they're making and they'll do just about anything. I found that kind of funny because they also do traditional pizzas and I don't know the spots near there, but it is true the spots for, this particular venue but pretty much is almost everyone in the area they will room with they want to do what you want unless they tell you no we can't do that and if they can't, you should listen to them because it's usually because they can't because they don't have enough staff or something very close to that just don't force him to do it because I don't think you'll be pleased. It's because they don't have enough staff or enough coverage for their other customers or whatever so if they're telling you, it's not night for it to the staff staff is pretty they're not with you. They are helping someone else you most likely just good people around there and the food is good, but you have some unusual or first time choices by For by far, good luck with you piece of choices or your dinner choices there. Great service and atmosphere including the owner, Andrew, who clearly strives to keep 163 an upbeat and friendly space to enjoy great food. The kitchen is open to the dining area and is very clean with a friendly hard working staff who all love their job. The music was well thought out, good sound quality and the right volume. Bathroom is very clean with a nice copper box sink with a quality working faucet and HOT water. The menu speaks for itself. We really loved the Eataly sub (great bread) and the PB&Fluff dessert pizza was a very big hit. They have poutine which I love but didn't order today however we did order a side of fried cheese curds and the curds were very good quality so I suspect that their Poutine is legit as they do fresh fries the right way. Let me preface that in any other region, this would easily be 4, maybe 5 star pizza. But when a pizza place opens around here, the scale changes. I thought the pizza was OK, but not great. The crust in New Haven pizza is usually transcendental, and here it's just underwhelming. Plenty of creative toppings, although the pulled pork pie fell short. It's a really nice, cozy space with great service, but I find it hard to come back since there's so much incredible pizza in town. This place is a real hidden gem! It's a smaller spot in East Rock, probably seats 20 people inside with a few tables outside as well. They have a gorgeous open kitchen with seats at the bar. I love to watch the inner workings of a kitchen but beware, it does get hot with the wood burning oven not being too far away. The pizza is scrumptious with your pick of either traditional or not so traditional flavors. My favorite thus far is the margherita, which consists of crushed tomatoes, mozzarella, and fresh basil (possibly picked from their shared garden outside the restaurant). The crust is perfectly chewy, crisp, charred, and carries a slight olive oil flavor. If you're a fan of wings, I would highly recommend them here! The Honey Sriracha is sweet, sticky, and slightly spicy and the Dad's Buffalo is garlicy, tangy and rich. The flavors burst and stand on their own. Dare I say it, they may be my favorite wings in New Haven. The sauces can also be ordered on the side to maintain the crispiness of the wings (not breaded) and moderate the sauce to wing ratio. The best part about this place is that it is BYOB (Bring Your Own Booze)! Your first time is on the house and every time after is a small charge. Get this, they have solid, varied, VEGGIE pizza's that won't make you regret not putting meat on it. My fav. asparagus with jam -- so delicious. Will definitely visit once I'm back in CT. Also, if you aren't counting your calories, they have deep-fried oreos with powdered sugar that will have you searching for carnival rides. Nostalgia. Must have been an off day as we saw the rave reviews and decided to stop by when we were visiting the area but the pies were pretty mediocre. Too much sauce, too burnt and a bit greasy. While their regular pies are reasonably priced, the gluten free pizza is overpriced. $5 upcharge for frozen 12 inch crust is one of the more expensive I've seen. Usually this is $2-$3 at other pizza places. The best part of the meal was the server. You can tell it is a nice family run business so hoping our experience was just an anomaly. read more

If Sally's is at one end of the New Haven pizza spectrum for having out-dated plain decor (but amazing pizza) then One 6 Three is at the opposite end of the spectrum for having chic hipster-ish decor (but so-so pizza). That's right, they make so-so pizza. It is pizza that wouldn't necessarily make me come back. Especially when there are so many other pizza places in the city that make a better pizza. Those pizza places just don't have the trendy decor like this place has. In fact all the wood and metal in this place is a little nauseating because it tries too hard to be hip. If you see the little herb garden out front with the little doggie leashes & sign you'll know what I mean. Plus I could be wrong but I swear the giant wall of graffiti whispered to me, "I am trying too hard." The crust is probably this pizza's biggest flaw and the crust is always the most important part of any pizza (though the most difficult to get right). Mine didn't taste cooked and it was extremely way too thin. Yes it was thinner than any of the big three pizzeria's in New Haven. The staffs' t-shirts say "Thin is in". I'm not sure what that means because the overwhelming majority of pizza in New Haven is thin style pizza. It's not like they're trendsetters in that particular genre. FYI one in four people in the area can trace their ancestry to southern Italy. So yea, you bet the pizza in this town is going to be thin style. It's equivalent to having t-shirts saying "Water is wet". The sauce is so-so, and the cheese is so-so as well. Hardly memorable. I've got to admit though, some of their pizza combinations appear kinda creative. i.e.; peanut butter sauce. So I just described both the atmosphere and the pizza, how's the staff? They seemed OK. This place replaced Angelo's, and wow, what a makeover! It looks awesome, interesting, and very clean with an open layout. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Their menu is way more than just pizza---really tasty, interesting offerings with a nod to family recipes as well as some hilariously named inventive stuff. Also, props for serving Foxon Park colas! They offer handcut seasoned fries with a variety of dipping sauces (basil aioli, bacon jam) ...and also poutine! Real poutine, with cheese curds, and just the right amount of gravy that preserves some crispy fries around the edge. Top notch fries. We also got the Memphis, a bbq pulled pork pizza with feta and fresh blueberries. It was tangy, zesty, with just a hint of sweetness. It actually made my mouth water. The crust was great too--great flavor, great dough, thin but with a crisp yet chewy crust: satisfying with each bite. Not charcoal like Modern or thin/soggy like Pepe's, it was just right. They have veggie and gluten free offerings, but their real stars are the meat dishes. I decided before we even finished eating that I wanted to come back to try so many other things--which rarely happens. Also, they are BYOB and have a little compartment in the wall where you can throw in your cork and add to the history of the place, which I thought was sweet. We work down the street and come here regularly for lunch. Absolutely my new favorite pizza place. I could eat The Goat every other day and not get sick of it. Everyone at work has a different favorite pizza and I haven't tried one I don't like yet. They have some great appetizers, sandwiches and side items as well that you shouldn't overlook, but you have to try a pizza! The only downside to eating there is that the place is small and has busy periods, but it doesn't take them long to make a pizza, so seats will open up.
