We came to One and Only BBQ for a late dinner in June. It was pretty humid out, but we were dining with our fur baby, so decided to sit outside. They have a few tables for outdoor dining. Dave was super nice and personable and it was super cool to learn that we were dining at their original store front location! We ordered the following: -BBQ chicken quesadilla (1/2 order) -Deviled eggs -Ribs & 1 meat dinner combo (pulled pork shoulder, twice baked potato salad, vegetarian bbq baked beans) We managed to finish all of our food, but were too full for dessert. We still ordered their famous banana pudding to go though! I was not pleased at all with the food. This is the first bbq place I tried since moving to Memphis. Everything was full of sugar. I prefer to have my meat seasoned and then barbecue sauce but barbecue sauce does not have to be full of sugar extremely sweet which this was. The big beans and potato salad was also full of sugar. I LIVE for good BBQ. BBQ Ribs are my favorite food and being from St. Louis, every time I visit Memphis, I HAVE to get some BBQ while in town. My first choice was packed and I was in a rush so I came here yesterday around 5pm. I hate to admit, but I was disappointed with my meal here. Upon entering the restaurant, which has a small dining room, the staff, although friendly, asked me what I wanted to drink and announced everything in the tiny dining room before I could even sit down. It was so off-putting to me, granted it was my first time there and I didn't know what to expect when arriving, still it made me feel awkward having all of my dining business (what I wanted to drink, how many people I had with me, etc) put out there for the entire full dining room to hear. I ordered a half-slab of pork ribs, with mac n' cheese and green beans for my sides. The ribs were tough! Like really tough. I seriously had to saw into the meat to cut the ribs apart. There was nothing "fall-off-the-bone" about these ribs. I will say that they were very meaty, however, but they definitely needed more time in the pit so they could tenderize. The sides were nothing to write home about at all. The green beans, although piping hot, had NO SEASONING AT ALL! They had no flavor whatsoever. The mac n' cheese was definitely cheesy but wasn't baked and lacked seasoning as well. I'm not a local and came to One and Only as a tourist. My cousin who is a local told me today that it's her family's favorite restaurant although she said she had never been to this location. I've had much better BBQ in Memphis and everywhere else for that matter. I'm no fortune teller, but I don't see myself returning here on future visits to Memphis. read more

I loved the brisket and potato salad. The green beans were very good as well, but very peppery (black), so be sure you like that seasoning if you try them. My family and I are visiting from Virginia and this place came highly recommended from our hotel. They made sure to tell us to check out the original location on Kirby. We came in and Amber was our server. She was AMAZING. Although the place is very small all tables were full and they were super busy. We ordered the feast which was an excellent recommendation from Amber. Jason (the manager I think) brung our food out fairly quickly. The ribs were so delicious and the turkey beast was my favorite for the underdog. We were given samples of the homemade banana pudding and had to take some home. As an out-of-towner, I prefer to experience the less touristy parts of a new city, and go to where the locals go. My time in Memphis was exactly like that, and I thank Yelp for the suggestion! The One and Only BBQ was suggested by a lovely Memphian in the airport when me and my traveling partner arrived. Even though I had researched the local restaurants in the area near my hotel, I came across this jem. Me and my partner arrived at this location. First of all, this restaurant isn't made to impress by the building it's in, but by the friendly staff and food inside! We sat in a corner and split time between the Olympics and discussion on dinner. I had already saw the menu previous to our visit, and kinda homed in on the ribs. I had them dry-rubbed with the choice of two sides. I choose greens and deviled eggs, and a slice of buttered bread completed the meal. Adding in some of their mild and spicy BBQ sauces added a level of taste and flavor that I was very impressed by!! The final piece to our Memphis barbecue puzzle was dessert. I had heard of their banana pudding, and asked for it right after the meal. I shared with my companion, and my companion ate more of it than I did!! Very good, not too sweet and flavored well. First let me tell you, I simply wanted some filling but not burdensome to my belly. Decided to check this location out and my goodness they didn't disappoint. Service, food the environment was great! I didn't eat there but sat inside to wait for my food which I would typically wait in my car( blame the introvert in me) but I for some reason felt comfy in there. I have gone twice in one week now. Very very fresh tasting. Comes with blue cheese and house-made candied spiced walnuts. The smoked chicken quesadilla was also very well done. I never leave bad reviews but I'm hoping to save someone from experiencing the same sad situation I found myself in. I was traveling from New Orleans to St. Louis and had a few hours to spend in Memphis. My plan was to have some BBQ and take the Sun Records tour. Thank God for Sun Records because One and Only BBQ almost made me wish I had kept on driving. The people were nice. That's why they get one star. The "brisket" was a pile of dry, overly salty beef scraps in a pile that looked like fast food gyro meat but tasted worse. I could have forgiven the "brisket" with the understanding that Memphis is known for its pork if not for the fact that ribs were worse. Not properly rendered, yet dry as if the cooking process had not gone long enough but then they sat overnight in a fridge and were warmed up the next day. They serve them in a half rack with no knife to cut them apart with so you have to rip them apart because again, they did not cook them long enough to break down the collagen so they were just a tough mess. It's pretty sad when you stop in the "BBQ Capital of the World" and a place with 4.4 out of 5 stars on Yelp and spend $30 for lunch and the best bite you had was the cole slaw. The sauce was like bbq sauce-colored corn syrup. Maybe that's just what Memphis sauce is supposed to taste like but for my taste that was the last straw. Most of my meal went in the trash and I left feeling confused about the town's BBQ status. I do not recommend this place. read more

We tried the wet ribs, smoked wings, twice baked potato salad, baked beans, deviled eggs and cole slaw. The sides were all delicious. I tried all three of the sauces that they served at the table and the habanero was my favorite; so good! I really loved the smoked chicken wings too. The ribs, I'm sad to say, we're just okay. While the dry rub ribs were amazing, I did not care too much for the thinly sliced and lean brisket, which reminded me of roast beef slices. I'm used to having some crust on my brisket, which adds to the overall flavor of beef brisket. Their brisket lacked a true smoky flavor like Texas brisket does. The sweet potato fries were on point but the twice baked potato salad lacked seasoning/spices and was too rich and creamy for my taste. Our drinks were always full and the staff was attentive as we dined. The dry rub BBQ ribs were the shining stars of the night.
