The service was incredibly slow and the bread was quite stale. However the rest of the meal was alright. Probably wouldn't visit here again.

Set inside the vintage (but modern) Hotel Viking, One Bellevue is both swanky and elegant. It's not very big, but it's deceivingly larger than I had assumed from my first glance at the bar area in the Viking lobby. I want to begin by saying how wonderful the wait staff is. We were greeted by the hostess, then we had someone bring us water, a different someone take out order, and a different someone bring us our bread, check on us, and bring us the dessert menu. All of those someones tended to us during the entire duration of our meal. We felt very taken care of. The food was heavenly. I highly suggest their seafood chowder. But then don't bother getting an actual meal unless you have a massive appetite. After the bread and the chef's special dish that he lets you try and then the chowder, you will be stuffed -- especially since the chowder is jam-packed with full pieces of shrimp, scallops, lobster, and fish. I also think they make it with salt pork (aka they make it the RIGHT way). Anyway, this is one of the best, if not THE best, chowder I have ever had. Get their mashed potatoes. They make them with browned butter. Amazing. If I had enough room in my full stomach I would have ordered dessert, but I just couldn't. I did, however, order the s'mores martini, which was very strong and very decadent. read more

This place is 5 stars all the way! The reason I gave this place 5 stars was because of our server Spencer! She was amazing! So upbeat, smiley, & friendly. She made our dinning experience a memorable one. Thank you so much Spencer! Our food was so yummy!!! It's was delicious & had so much flavor. My boyfriend had the seafood chowder (loved it so much that he wants to order one to take home the day we leave Newport) & the asparagus/spinach salad (it was HUGE) I had the crab cakes which were so yummy! One Bellevue, I found to be a hidden little gem in Newport. It's slightly off the beaten path of the touristy downtown newport area.... But that's only about 5 blocks of Thames. This means never a wait and you will be seated promptly. Breakfast menu is brief, but it hits all the regular breakfast faire highlights with a boutique flair. The service was exceptionally good. Morning Mimosas were a bit pricey... But hey, it's a 5 star hotel (that has earned all of said stars) and it's in Newport. read more

I went to this restaurant for my Bachelorette party dinner in Newport this past weekend. We had trouble finding a reservation for around 19 people originally in the Newport area. One Bellevue was extremely accommodating to us even though we had a very large party of guests. The food was amazing and service was outstanding. I could not have had a better dinner for my bachelorette. My sister picked this place randomly on open table because we did not know the area well and I am so glad that she did! It was the best experience. Our server even helped us take a group photo for my bachelorette. So cute!! The waitresses and other staff are excellent. I will be spreading the word on this one! Also the food was really amazing. I had the lobster mac and cheese and it was very good. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy their food as well. The Viking Hotel provided the absolute worst Mother's Day Brunch I have ever experienced. The food was tasteless and borderline dangerous to ingest ( the raw oysters were looking dehydrated and clingy, I could barely pry one from it's shell). But, let me start from the beginning... Upon arrival, our brunch adventure seemed like it was on the right track. We received complimentary valet parking and the attendants were very pleasant. Then we walk into the hotel and are engulfed in it's history and beautiful setting. But then... We were ushered into the banquet room which was dreary, poorly lit and reminded me a little of the Shining- without the glitz and glamour of the hayday. We were pleased because there was a duo playing music in the front corner of the room and the songs were very pleasant. The staff (we had, I think, 3 servers for our table of two adults and two children) were nice enough but it seemed to take over ten minutes to get our drinks or have our plates removed. Then it was off to the buffet. The kids buffet was really just okay. They provided mac n cheese, etc but no waffles, no pancakes and no kid desserts. And now, the adult's buffet. It was awful. As I said above, the raw oysters were absolutely disgusting. The cracked crab was mealy and rubbery at the same time- how they managed that, I don't know. The other dishes were typical: ceasar salad, which was okay. Eggs Benedict which consisted of overcooked eggs with solid yolks atop english muffins that were too dry or taosted to cut into. Some kind of steak which was cold and tough. A stuffed sole dish that was overly fishy with crunchy rice. And more and more of this sort of grossness. All in all, I would say avoid any brunches at The Viking Hotel. While the hotel is beautiful, the buffet suffers from disgust... read more

Hubby and I thought we'd start the day off with a breakfast at One Bellevue -- they make very nice Greek omelets -- with table outside to enjoy one of the last great days of summer. Got to the restaurant and if the hostess were any slower in seating people, we would have had to check for a pulse. Actually, we later discovered that if she wasn't bussing tables as well, maybe she could have done a proper job dealing with the front. We asked for a table outside. No can do. Seems the restaurant didn't have enough staff available to open the outside, which is only open during warm months anyway. Food was okay but it was a huge disappointment. There were two Romanian guys working to staff an entire dining room, which wasn't any fairer to them. A hotel that can't staff up for holiday weekends? One has to wonder. read more

I have been to the garden patio twice for specials. Last summer (2015) I went for Beer and Bacon deal. This was ok. Beers were good but we only got 1 bouquet of bacon and it wasnt presented well. Last night (Sunday night) I went for the $59 Seafood Paella for 2 plus a house bottle of wine. I really enjoyed the meal. I would call this a deal at $49 but for the amount of food $59 is standard pricing. It was however very delicious with a whole lobster, clams, mussels, scallops and shrimp. Minimal rice which makes the dish a paella but everything was very fresh and tasted great. Our waitress had a great attitude and was very friendly, however did not know how to open a wine bottle but apologized for it very much lol. we also asked for melted butter and she forgot. It seems like she was the only waitress for the outside area and the inside area for the night so she was trying her best. read more

Has every other person who reviewed One Bellevue gone to a different restaurant?!? I love this place and go there at least 2-3 times a year. The wait staff is always attentive without being overbearing. The food has always been well prepared and commensurate with what I'd expect in an establishment such as the Viking. One thing that surprises me is that if there was a problem I didn't see any of the posters say they attempted to resolve it with the hotel manager. I once had a problem at the Viking (not the restaurant) and they did such a great job of rectifying it that I was made an instant fan! btw...the eggs Benedict is the best I've had and as a matter of fact I always ask for a third egg and extra sauce which I'm given at no charge. read more

UNREAL!!!!!! The soft shell crab was incredible, the french onion soup was made perfectly, the ahi tuna as the main was memorable and the truffle mac and cheese was unreal we licked the bowl after. We finished our dinner off with guiness brownie which was the perfect ending. I'm def having dinner there again everything on the menu sounds delicious cant wait to go back. The food was ok. The service needs serious work. Took forever to be seated and the place was empty. Took forever to be greeted but then got greeted by 3 different servers. We ordered, got food (no plates to eat it with) but didn't see our server again until the check was ready. Food fabulous- Service/ Ambiance a bad night's dream It saddens me to write this review regarding a hotel I have been fond of for these many passed years. Unfortunately, last night we were treated to a Dr Jeckel/ Mr Hyde experience in their dining room. Where in the past, they had booths, plants and a romantic ambiance, we were greeted with emptiness of small tables and large open floor space. More resembling a version of a Holiday Inn versus than a romantic boutique hotel setting. Business was slow at 8:30 which makes the poor attendance of our server that much more inexcusable. Water glasses never refilled, empty wine glasses never removed ( though she did try sell us another glass twice). No bread available. No suggestions for an alternative. And the music. 60's rock? We asked it to be turned down lower 3 times. Speaker was right over the table. With all the empty tables to choose from already a bad decision by the management Food was incredible but at the prices their asking, ambiance and service must also be of similar standards. It just rubs me the wrong way when a restaurant charges for iced tea refills. I can't help it. Sure, charge extra for a soda. But iced tea? Please. This is a defining factor in whether or not I will return to your patio, One Bellevue. I sincerely hope you change your policy, hotel or not. The food was good, some of it awkward. They need to tighten the game a bit. Serving some entrees with flair and others in a bowl with no garnish is a little amateur. Absolutely one of the best places for lunch or dinner....amazing food and staff. For dinner the filet or the lamb are both delicious. For lunch we had the balsamic portobello sandwich and Monterey chicken sandwich....both were equally good as well as the side Caesar salad. read more

While the space itself is beautiful, I was underwhelmed by both the service and the food. We arrived and were seated, and we told them that we were there for afternoon tea. They brought us a menu but gave no instructions. When the server returned, my spouse indicated that she would like the gluten free options, and we were informed that we could not split the order so I would be having gluten free as well. I let them know that we also had a nut allergy, so we would not want anything with almonds - they were actually very accommodating about this, which was a plus. We wanted to order the Royal Tea with champagne, but they didn't actually ask us, and so we had to catch the server before he left the table to ask for it. We selected our teas and they brought hot water, but never inquired about milk, which we wanted. We also didn't receive our champagne. After some time, a new server came to tell us that she would be taking care of us from that point on. We asked for and finally received our drinks. When our tiered tray of food came, they told us they were making sure that there were no nuts in the scones by re-reading the packaging. We were served tea sandwiches on gluten free bread (cucumber and cream cheese, a few with smoked salmon, and some with a sun-dried tomato spread). We also had two types of gluten free scones - chocolate chip and one that was maybe dates or figs? We also had fresh fruit instead of small cakes or truffles. I appreciate that they accommodated both a nut and a gluten allergy, but there were two of us at the table and I have had tea at other establishments where the food sensitivity of one was not imposed on all parties. Service was slow, and other tables remarked on it as well. Overall, fair, but I wouldn't return and wouldn't recommend this to other diners. read more

My husband and I had a great experience here while on vacation. We like to fish and were able to bring in fresh fish from our charter for dinner, quite a treat. I am writing to express my dismay after an experience in your restaurant this past Saturday evening. We had met friends for drinks on your roof top bar with intentions of going into town for Dinner @ the Black Pearl Restaurant. Our friends are Newport Locals & suggested we just stay at the hotel & have dinner there. We were promptly seated in the outdoor dining area at approximately 7pm. We were greeted by our server Tom but he didn't take our drink orders for at least 15 minutes. After we ordered our wine, it was another 15 minutes before Tom returned with it & things just went downhill from there. We ordered oysters, salads & entrees all at the same time. Our oysters were delivered at about 8pm, salads about 20 minutes later & our entrees were not brought to the table until well past 9pm! I order the Shrimp Pad Thai, my boyfriend ordered lamp chops & our friends ordered Filet & French Onion Soup. There was no apology or explanation as to why our food took so long to be served which was disturbing because on 2 different occasions, we used the restrooms & upon returning to our table, we asked when we could expect our entrees. Although my shrimp was "warm", the Pad Thai was cold. The Filet Mignon was served with a heap of "butter" that had not melted in the slightest (clearly the filet was "stone cold"). The French Onion Soup had a "slab" of cheese on top that wasn't melted. The sides with the Lamp Chops were piping hot but the chops were luke warm. We told Tom how disappointed we were. He offered to bring us new entrees but after waiting an hour, we really didn't want to wait any longer & we were meeting friends down at the Harbor. The Filet was sent back, the Soup wasn't touched, I ate the shrimp but not the Pad Thai & my boyfriend was so hungry, he ate his luke warm meal. This type of service/food quality was hardly expected at the Viking Hotel! Our tab was close to $300 and we got nothing but aggrevation. To top it off, a female "manager" approached our table at least 10 minutes after we had talked to Tom & had NO idea how dissatisfied we were! read more

One Bellevue at The Hotel Viking has never disappointed us. We have dined there many times and had breakfast, lunch and dinner. Recently on Nov. 5, 2015 we stopped in for a late lunch. We are frequent Newport visitors and have dined in many restaurants..this by far is the best...We started out with a bowl of New England Clam Chowder... so creamy and abundant. I had the lobster roll on a brioche roll, with harvest greens. Divine.... lots of lobster and I just love brioche rolls. The best lobster roll I have ever had, anywhere..... My husband had The Viking Club. again just the best...Roasted turkey breast, crispy bacon, harvest greens with cranberry sage mayo (so good). Club was served in triangles on a long skewer.. very nice presentation.. we both chose fries.. again very unique.. thin wide long strips of potatoes that curled.... the best.. also served with house made pickles. We finished up with cheese cake with fresh berries and cream. We will be returning very soon. And our server Spencer was so nice..very efficient without being intrusive, and very knowledgeable about all menu items. read more

After an awkward start of having to get the hotel attendant to find a host/ess to seat us, we had an enjoyable and relaxing lunch here at One Bellevue. My husband and I had the Spring Carrot Soup as an appetizer. The presentation was simple and beautiful - the orange soup with green parsley oil drizzled over the top and a dollop of lemon creme fraiche in the middle made for a lovely and colorful start to our meal. The soup was delicious. It was rich and light and the lemon creme fraiche was a tasty treat in each bite. When the soup was gone, my husband asked if we should order more! For our lunch entree we shared the Monterey Chicken Sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich was simple, fresh, and nicely flavored. The salad was a refreshing mix of greens, chopped asparagus, sun-dried tomatoes, and sunflower seeds. But the star of the show was the dressing. I have no idea what kind it was but I licked my bowl clean! The service was appropriately sparse but attentive throughout the mean. We ordered the blueberry pancakes for breakfast, which were described on the menu as having "maple syrup and whipped cream." The pancakes were not fully cooked (batter inside), the maple syrup was probably Aunt Jemima, not real maple syrup, and there was no whipped cream. They should have done far better for $8. Then add $4 for the bottomless cup of coffee. read more

This review is specifically for the tea service. My friend and I went to afternoon tea last Friday, and I was completely unimpressed. The server, while pleasant, didn't remember some basics - like spoons. Sort of hard to stir your tea with no spoon... and the sugar came on a swizzle stick. Great for penny candy, horrid for tea. The food was uninspired, and not tea-like at all. Chunky chicken salad, cucumber sandwiches made with left-over crudites (really? diced cucumber? and mozzarella? and balsamic vinegar?), and shitake-onion sandwiches (with crunchy, not-rehydrated mushrooms) - all under-seasoned. They did cut the crusts off - I'll give them that. Coffee cake was tasty. Scones ...were not scones, and were not fully baked. Raw pastry with "lemon curd" (more of a lemon-flavored foam) and "truffles" (a wad of melted baking chocolate held together with chopped walnuts) were not the way I wanted to end the meal. My friend found that she was still hungry, and ordered a club sandwich - which she said was great (I can attest to the fries being wonderful), so it's not all the food, just the tea service, that's not up to snuff. read more

i first reviewed this restaurant a year ago, as it is down the street from our home, hence convenient. my husband and i always enjoyed it, and found the food consistently good and reliable. last night, we were a party of six, and not only was the service missing in action, the kitchen was off. while it was a sunday night, it IS season, and if they are not on their "A" game in July, well, 'nuff said. my caesar salad was made with iceberg lettuce. iceberg. bottled dressing. i suspect the lobster salad was made with frozen lobster meat, for it did not have that fresh, abundant taste. a huge disappointment. crab cakes looked amazing, and our guest pronounced them wonderful. they have recently done some landscaping outside to visually open up the patio area outside the restaurant. nice idea. lovely patio. it was raining last night, or else we would have been eating there. i am truly hoping we caught an off night, and we will try this one more time, but i must tell you, what a dramatic spiral downward in the service and food . please guys, pull it together. you've been too good in the past, to ruin it for your future. read more

The hotel viking in Newport continues to disappoint. The service is fair at best, the food is mediocre and the rooms are shoddy. We were on the rooftop for the Fourth of July. We had a reservation, yet they had no table for us. They ended up seating us at a counter, the food was cold and the waitstaff were overwhelmed. Would not return. Totally overpriced. read more

On vacation recently my husband, sister , brother in law and I went into this restaurant for desserts and after dinner drinks. It was late about 9:45. We took seats at a table and were ignored by the staff. If it was closed fine the staff could have let us know. We left. I sent an email which went unanswered. So it's 2014, Easter weekend. And we've just had the nicest Easter buffet brunch within memory here. And we've done a few in MA where we live. We stayed elsewhere in Newport but picked here from a few choices for Easter dinner. To start, the valet parking guys outside greeted us nicely. The large room ambience was fine, food was nicely set up, plenty of variety and sectioned into breakfast food, fruit, dinner sides, meat carving station, raw bar (hello HUGE fabulous shrimp, hello!) kids food area, omelet station, and dessert and coffee. They even had potato latkes, who DOES that this side of a real Jewish deli? What an unexpected treat. Good too. The broccolini and carrots were a little on the crunchy side, the smoked shoulder was fabulous, the roast beef looked very rare. Fresh salads, Boursin cheese mashed potatoes, all good. The various desserts looked amazing, I just wasn't in the mood for sweet. Hubby loved the carrot cake. Coffee was good. The thing that earns 5 stars is that nothing was over salted. So rare to find a meal not liberally loaded with salt in everything from veggies to potato dishes to brined meats. Its.everywhere.ugh. But not here at the Viking! We tasted flavor instead of salt-as-flavor in the dishes we had, so really have to thank the chef. Thank you Viking chef! Well played sir or m'am! The staff was responsive to some requests I had, the duo that sang added a little extra something you want in a special dinner, and they had an Easter egg hunt outside for the kids. We will probably do this again and recommend brunch here. Very easy to find, park, and worth the price. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Viking again this year. One reason is the location and the other is one Bellevue. Dinner was wonderful...lamb chops, swordfish, salmon. Portions are huge and beautifully presented. We dined outdoors on the patio which was very pleasant. I suggest candles or lights on the tables which were not offered. By the time we finished dinner, we could not see to sign the check. Otherwise, terrific. read more

My wife and I went there for Thanksgiving dinner. That was our first mistake. I had the salad and my wife had soup for starters. Both were good. But we both ordered the traditional turkey dinner. Second mistake. I've never had turkey as bland and tasteless as that. And the cranberry sauce was right out of a can. Neither of us finished our dinner. I just ate here and it was excellent. I travel all over the US and sometimes Europe and this restaurant holds its own. Not overpriced or pretentious, staff was very friendly. I read the reviews before coming, and perhaps some of the negative ones had an effort, so I was aware of where the bumps might be but really a fine meal reasonably priced. Btw, staying at a great room that is a fraction of the price at peak season and apparently there is a roof deck bar that is a local secret but a tad chilly now. read more
