One thing you need to know about this place is that it seems there will always be long waits due to the restaurant being small and also the popularity behind it. We were told that it would take about half an hour for us to get seated, so we spent our time walking around the International District. After being seated, we all ordered donburi bowls. I chose the Pork Katsu bowl, and I had also ordered their special Spicy Tuna Mayo onigiri. Being that this place specialized in onigiri, I really enjoyed the Tuna Mayo onigiri. It was a good size and the rice to filling ratio was perfect. For the Pork Katsu, it was good, but I don't think it was for me personally. I visited Onibaba on a Sunday for lunch since I heard that they were new in the area and had pretty good reviews. I arrived there around noon just in time to nab a table, which was lucky since the restaurant filled up quite quickly! The waiter was nice, and I particularly appreciated how they greeted customers in japanese as they walked in. I ended up ordering the Oyako (salmon and salmon roe) Ochazuke, which I was super pleasantly surprised to see, since I rarely, if ever see japanese restaurants in Seattle have the classic dish I grew to love after visiting Kyoto. I also ordered a salmon onigiri. The food was on the more expensive side, but I had high hopes. I was a bit surprised by the ochazuke, which was made with dashi broth instead of green tea (which is supposed to be the o-cha in ochazuke). This made the whole dish super flavorful but wasn't as refreshing and light as I expected it to be. They also didn't give much rice, and it also didn't include many pickled vegetables on the side, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, though, the dish was quite flavorful. I've been here 3-4 times and I've always had a wonderful experience. The waiters are so nice! They were helpful with suggestions and helped us understand certain ingredients we were unsure of. This is a great place to go with a small group so everyone can share and try a bit of everything. My favorites are the unagi onigiri, mentaiko onigiri, and spam and radish musubi. Honorable mention for the mustard leaf and kombu onigiri for veggie lovers. Our mini chicken curry was delicious with the right amount of spice in my opinion. Very hot and comforting. This place was pretty ok. Very small on the inside and not suitable for large groups unless you're ok breaking apart. I think probably no more than 4 people max for a group. My boyfriend and I got the oyako (salmon with salmon roe) and mentaiko special (roe with cheese) and ebi mayo (shrimp tempura with honey mayo). It was pretty good and beautifully presented. Everything came out quickly. The oyako has lots of filling with I appreciated, the mentaiko special had loads of rich cheese, and the ebi mayo reminded me of honey walnut shrimp but without the walnuts. I wish there was more filling in the ebi mayo because at one point I was just eating rice. This makes a good snack if all you're ordering is onigiri (they have other meal items but I wasn't in the mood for it) but realistically it is pricy for a snack. I say snack because I wasn't actually full after. We also ordered one cup of green tea (free refills!) and the total after tax but before tip was around $30. I've only gotten onigiri at Onibaba. Definitely go early for lunch as the restaurant don't have a lot of seating so might have to wait a bit. I've tried the regular mentaiko, mentaiko special, oyako, ebi mayo, and spam tama musubi. Personally, I really enjoyed mentaiko and oyaka onigiris. They were packed with ingredients. I'm not a huge of the mentaiko as the cheese wasn't completely melted on top and too heavy on top of mentaiko that mask the cod roe. Onibaba is a cute dinner spot when you're craving a comforting rice ball or soup with good company in close quarters. Super busy for a small place. Expect a wait but service staff are very kind and are trying their best to get everyone in and out and provide good service. Una-Tama 4/5 The eel and egg are both really soft, the egg especially. Egg is sweet and seems like it just melts away on your tongue. The eel was saucy and seemed like there were tiny edible bones so don't be surprised Kaarage 4/5 Pieces are big and the meat is succulent and juicy, Doesn't taste very marinated and it doesn't come with any dipping sauce, just a wedge of lemon for some tang. Ochazuke (Grilled Unagi Onigiri Ochazuke 4/5, Sake Ochazuke 3/5) Salty cooked salmon on a rice ball. The salmon is fairly salty so the addition of the light broth balances the flavors well. Personally however not my top pick. I enjoyed the concept but i don't think that it's something I'd regularly order if I came to this restaurant. The place breathes, and there is little risk of your walking derrière edging a table as was always the case in the past. But the table sizes are still tiny. We went for lunch with 40 mins to closing time. They were out of a lot of stuff. We had: 1) Agedashi Tofu - Don't be fooled by the dense looking pillows of tofu. They are ultra soft, drowning in the thickened bonito broth. Different from what I've eaten elsewhere but very nice. 4/5 2) Katsu Onigiri - So good. Almost like what I've sampled in Japan. The Katsu is breaded beautifully, and with the rice, the Tonkatsu sauce and Nori, every bite is pure delight. Well not ever - there are portions where the rice is missing the Tonkatsu sauce - which just nudges your mouth to take another bite to find that missing ingredient. Bug or feature? Don't know! 4/5 3) Sake (Salmon) Okazuke with the Soy dashi broth - I reluctantly picked this because they were out the ones I wanted. Cute little Japanese restaurant in the International District. The lines can get pretty long for dinner, so if you can, try to line up when they first open. My friend lined up at 5pm and we got the last available table. Otherwise we probably would have needed to wait an hour. Half of the menu is onigiri but the other half has things like ochazuke, karaage, curry udon etc. I actually don't really like onigiri that much because I feel like you're eating primarily rice half the time, so I got the curry udon. That bowl they used insulated extremely well to the point that the soup was so hot for like 90% of the time we were there! The temperature made it a little difficult to eat the dish since it was so hot for so long. But I thought the curry udon itself was decent. Nice chewy noodles. This is another one of those places I really don't want to write a review for, but fairness demands that I do... Once upon a time there were some enterprising restauranteurs who opened a small Japanese restaurant in the Japantown section of Seattle's International District. It was called 'Tsukushinbo', but I called it 'The-Restaurant-With-No-Name' because it was operating incognito - no signage outside to let you know what it was The restaurant was a big hit, and one of Seattle's hardest tables to get. It operated quite successfully for several years, and then.... The owners decided to switch gears and do a somewhat different Japanese restaurant, so out with Tsukushinbo and its sushi bar, and in with 'Onibaba', a casual eatery with a rather limited, casual menu. Most people (like me) would've told them 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Was this a crazy thing to do? It appears these folks were crazy like foxes... THE ROSES: First and foremost, the food - it is uniformly excellent! Their specialty is onigiri, and I've never had better (and I've eaten it in Japan!). Other dishes like their ochazuke are excellent as well. I'm personally partial to the Curry Udon; it's the best I've ever had. Portions are right-sized and the prices are reasonable. Service is always efficient and very pleasant. THE THORNS: As other Yelpers have noted, the dining space is a bit small, so waits for a table are common. Parking can be tricky, but there are pay lots nearby. Thanks to a shamefully inept city government, the area is overrun with vagrants and addicts; be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and don't leave anything visible in your car if you drive and park. Menu is a little limited, but everything they offer is done extremely well. NEITER ROSE NOR THORN: Onibaba is still 'The Restaurant with No Name'. There is STILL no signage outside. If you're not familiar with the area finding this place may be a challenge, but that's part of the fun, isn't it? SOUNDS LIKE YOU REALLY LIKE THIS PLACE; WHY DIDN'T YOU WANT TO WRITE THIS REVIEW? After visiting Japan, we've been trying to find a good onigiri place and decided to try this place out! The storefront is pretty unassuming so may be difficult to find. We preordered the onigiri and the pickup was a breeze. We got the salmon/ikura one (the ikura was a tad on the saltier side), unagi and tonkatsu. Everything was on the smaller side for the price and oily. The onigiri in Japan are wrapped in a way to keep the nori crispy; however, these are not so you'll have to eat them fast. We got lucky getting seated an hour before closing but were informed they were out of the katsu curry. They explained the curry sauce took 3 days to make but that explanation didn't make me feel much better. The Yaki Onigiri with cheese looked great but had a strong taste of propane. It had an unbearable taste of whatever fuel their torch used to melt the cheese and char the surface. We each had a bite and stopped. Popped in around 12:15ish on a Saturday (they open at 12) and the restaurant was already full, it's got about 6 tables. We ended up waiting 30 minutes, which isn't too bad. Once we were seated, most of the big tables received their orders, so we didn't have to wait long. My partner ordered the Oyako ochazuke, she loved it. I thought it was a touch salty for me. I ordered the shoyu butter yaki onigiri, ajitama onigiri and tori karrage. Everything was super delicious, karrage a touch salty but not bad, yaki onigiri crispy and the ajitama- my favorite, the egg was the best. The restaurant is in the old Tsukushinbo location, nondescript, except for a wooden placard inside the window. The interior is renovated, fresh, minimal, fits the space well. Tsukushinbo fans rejoice! Onibaba is open for business! Onibaba is in the same space as Tsukushinbo, but it's NOT Tsukushinbo! Yes, it looks familiar and has some familar items, familiar faces, but it's rebranded! The footprint is still small, but they have somehow managed to fit more tables and seating by removing the sushi bar. Don't worry sushi fans, they will return at some point with their famous omakase sets, but not in the Onibaba spot. So what's new besides the removal of sushi and sashimi items? They have kept some of our favorites like gyoza and agedashi tofu (which we did order BTW), but now the menu focuses on rice balls. More specifically Onigiri! If you've been to Japan, you know these rice balls are everywhere and are the perfect snack! What makes Onibaba's concept appealing is there are over 20 offerings here! On this opening day, we chose Spam Tama (egg) musubi, and Una(gi) Tama (egg) musubi. This is comfort food to us, so we gravitated to musubi. BUT we are excited to try more options the next time around - I'm definitely eyeing the Mentaiko and Ebi Mayo Onigiri. Apparently the hubby's eyes were bigger than his stomach and he ordered the Pork Katsu Curry - a meal on it's own. It's a pork (or you can choose chicken) cutlet, perfectly panko-breaded and fried over rice, and topped with their homemade curry sauce, served with a green salad, pickled ginger and miso soup. We ordered: -okaka onigiri - packed full! -shoyu butter yaki onigiri - perfectly crisp outside with melty butter pat -ume ochazuke - paaaaacked with ume!!! -yasai ochazuke - loved the veggie-ness of it and the mix of sour and sweet pickle flavor with the rich dashi -agedashi tofu - the thick dashi was super flavorful but it took some crunch out of the tofu -oyakudon - gentle flavors but NOT bland.
