I actually think it's the latter. It's a lot smaller than I imagined with very limited seating. We went here for the grilled salmon sandwich. We had seen many online reviews saying it is amazing. They make the sandwiches right in front of you, so you know that they are fresh. We took our sandwiches to go and by the time we got them home , they were cold. The fries traveled well, but again they were also cold bu the time we got home. The grilled salmon sandwiches were very good, but not great , and I really would have loved to have eaten it warm. Prices are on the high side for the butcher meats. But I guess you should expect that since they are an artisanal butcher. I did not like the look of some of the meats in the cases. Would we go back? Maybe to try the Bacon Burger. But we would definitely recommend eating your food in the butcher shop and not taking it to go. I have just found out that that are moving into Carnival Grocery in Oak Park.

As soon as I walked in, I saw so many goodies I knew I was taking home. They had a very well curated selection of fancy condiments from small makers, rare ingredients, and the highest quality version of many every day foods! Everyone behind the counter was so friendly and knowledgeable. I had to try one of their sandwiches and got the salmon po boy at their recommendation. It was really well seasoned and super fresh with a very generous slice of fish on it. Definitely coming back for another one next time I'm in the area! The rainbow rolls consisted of plain, uncooked vegetables wrapped in rice paper, accompanied by peanut sauce as well as a vinegar dip. There was absolutely no taste to the rainbow rolls, and the peanut sauce tasted like peanut butter that had been microwaved for twenty seconds. The vinegar dip was the only thing that salvaged the rolls. The teriyaki did not come as advertised. There were chunks of glazed soy in brown rice - no other veggies in the bowl itself. There was a side salad that I dumped into the bowl to add some crunch and texture. The glazed soy was tasty but the rice was remarkably bland and mushy. This regime of blandness continued with the Burmese noodle salad: some of the flavours had potential and the dish might have been tastier if those flavours were accentuated, but instead it was a bowl of noodles and assorted vegetables with no compelling taste or texture. The cheesecake was both too sweet and remarkably bitter at the same time. It was fine texturally but the sweetness was overwhelming. The layer of tea on top of the cheesecake added some bitterness. The two flavours were totally incongruous. I have never wasted dessert before - if I can't finish it I take it home, but this dessert was so inedible that even at nine dollars it was not worth salvaging. Service was fine and the food came out quickly. The location of the restaurant in downtown Oak Park was nice - there was some sort of music festival going on outside that made an otherwise aggressively mediocre meal more bearable. Overall, I do not recommend this establishment.

Advanced Physical Medicine has been located next door to the Onion Roll Deli since 2007. Being from NY, I can honestly say that it is one of the diverse, well-maintained establishments in the area. Food is always fresh and corned beef is always lean. I never had a bad meal there. The new owners are making changes for the better. All our staff eats there daily and we always purchase beautiful deli trays. They even offer a Passover Tray which we pre-ordered for the holiday. The new matzo ball soup is HOMEMADE with chicken and veggies and MUCH better than the old salty soup that was served. The specialty coffee and teas are our favorite. Those that don't like the changes have to be absolutely crazy. The only changes we noticed was the brand new equipment and additions to the menu. Try going elsewhere for this type of food. You will never see prices like this anywhere in Chicago. In fact, take the NY test and go into one of the deli's there! read more

Great corned beef omelets! My fav on Sunday mornings! I've lived in the area for the past 18 years & the Onion Roll has never disappointed me whether I order take out food or sit in. Ahhh, matzo ball soup or kreplach soup on a cold winter's day hits the spot. And how many places sell bialys?!! Getting their corned beef & cabbage dinner has become a tradition for me on St. Patrick's day. Stopping in for a nice lean corned beef sandwich beats a hot dog joint any day. Onion Roll has a small town, cordial feel.......never rushed & a very pleasant attentive staff. Ralph makes sure that cup of coffee is hot & refilled. Waitress Lisa is the best.......no matter how busy the place gets, Lisa always serves with a smile & it is obvious she loves the patrons of the Onion Roll & is darn good at her job. We have been going to the Onion Roll for years, since my almost college-bound daughter was in diapers. The lox are cut right off the fish, a real treat. The bagels are NY Bagel & Bialy--yes, they don't make them on the premises but they're hands down the best bagels around (certainly superior to the faux pastry that passes for bagels throughout most of Chicagoland). The dish I always get is one I taught them from Detroit--lox, eggs and onions. Ask for it by it's Onion Roll name: Daddy eggs. The staff is always friendly--Lisa, Lena and Matt have watched my kids grow up. Overall, a great neighborhood restaurant that seems to have stood the test of time. read more

Pretty below average for a a kosher deli, which I realize they're not. I actually like the Onion Roll, but the reviewer who says its "criminal" to not get their bagels has a pretty low bar for bagels. As for a kosher deli..well, it's not and doesn't really claim to be. As far as I know, the folks who own/run the place are italian catholics. I called for a tray of food for a shiva...and they had no idea what a shiva was. So it looks like a traditional kosher deli, but it's not. Really, its more of a greasy spoon with a takeout counter. This is not a bad thing, just not a deli. read more

I have been going to Onion Roll for years and fell very comfortable when having my lunch there. The staff is always friendly and a little cheeky which just adds to the experience. My favorite is the pastrami omelette but all the food they make is fresh and very tasty. They have recently renovated the restaurant and even have a patio now so it is even more enjoyable then before which was pretty great then. I work next door to the Onion Roll and love getting my morning fix from here. Their breakfast sandwiches are amazing. I just tried their new hot chocolate for the first time today and I have to say I am a fan. I also recommend the corned beef, it's my favorite. Oh and not to mention the homemade cheese cake...mmmmm. Wow, I really like this place. I walked by and stopped in, I was by myself so I sat at the counter in the dining area. I wasn't really familiar with the menu but the server (Maureen) was so helpful, she made a few recommendations and with her advice I had a wonderful late lunch! Well being that was raised by a jewish Grandma I know what good Matzo ball soup is SUPOSE to taste like and sorry but when went to the onion roll it was really bad the balls tasted old and just plain icky! I came home and made my self some from the box and tasted better then theirs! also food was just nothing special. read more
