We haven't been out on date night since COVID started (sad, I know), so we were very excited to come to Onyx, especially since the restaurant is located inside the Four Seasons. The hotel itself was beautifully decorated for Christmas. The restaurant is classy, but dress code is casual. The service was excellent, but the food was so disappointing! The meal started out good enough with the tuna tartare rice cakes and scallop/lobster dumplings, but quickly went downhill. One thing to note: I did not find any garlic chili crunch in the dumplings, but the shellfish broth was delicious (but maybe provide a spoon so patrons can actually drink the broth without looking like barbarians). We ordered the following maki: toro, hamachi, and spicy tuna. Toro was hands-down the best. The other two were mediocre. Next came the fried rice and crispy Brussels sprouts. The rice was mushy and overly salty. The Brussels sprouts were over drenched in tonkatsu sauce. Highly do not recommend! Last item that I also do not recommend is their A5 Wagyu specialty roll. The roll simply tasted like sauce and left a strange, unpleasant flavor in our mouths. Not only was date night an epic fail, we won't be back. Onxy is located inside the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake. I made a reservation for dinner but walk-ins are welcome. Upon actually walking into the establishment, I wasn't greeted at all by the Staff or the Sushi Chef despite them all being well aware of my arrival since the restaurant is actually very small and we all made eye contact. It felt strange at first, but after my party and I was seated, service ended up being really good for the rest of the evening. There wasn't much of a sushi / sashimi selection but overall, everything tasted fresh. My favorite was the miso soup served in a tea pot and I was happy with everything that was ordered, however the bf gave Onyx just a 5/10 rating, even though I am usually the picky one. I've stayed at various FS hotels and it is nice to find something that is not the usual Steak or Pasta. Prices are reasonable, but I cannot recall whether they offer Omakase. The total for two for food and a bottle of Sake came out to about $400. I am planning to book a staycation at the hotel some time this month so I am looking forward to coming back again. read more

Disappointed with tonight's dinner. The sushi/sashimi were slightly fishy again. The rice was just ok, I'm not sure it was seasoned. I might just stick with cooked food moving forward. One star deducted. Service was sub-par. The waiter got my order wrong, and also forgot a few items even though he appeared to be "writing it down". The busier was more attentive than the server, and even asked if I wanted another drink when it had clearly been empty for some time. Another star deducted. Ambiance is great as always. I always love watching the live tank located behind the sushi chefs. Will be awhile before I give this place another shot. Hopefully their consistency will improve. read more

Some of the Malibu locals recommended this place to us to check out, and it was definitely worth it! Hidden in a hotel, this Japanese restaurant is very elegant looking but has a casual family and welcoming feel. We ordered the omakase for the evening, of which they give you two choice types; one with more fish and the other with more exotic sushi types. We also ordered the sake pairing to go with the dish. The prices were perfect for normal omakase. With each course, came more and more mouth watering sushi, each better than the next. They even brought out fresh wasabi for us to use. The service was incredible and attentive, they even walked us thru each sake course which was very informative. The price is high for the amount you get but you kinda expect the highway robbery when you eat dinner at Four Seasons but daymmmm you can't expect me to pay $8-$10 for one piece of Nigiri!! They usually come as a pair! Hot plate scallops sounded good but when they said the $17 hot dish app only came with 1 cooked scallop I said excuse me thinking I misheard him! A lovely celebration dinner at the 4 Season and the recently read-opened Onyx Japanese kitchen - from start to finish a great dining experience including our aptly named sushi server (Ocean, yes that's her name) who kept the food and drinks coming throughout the evening. Our party of 5 tried most of the menu and found most, if not all to be delish - the only disappointment was the "fish and chips"- it's missed the spot as part of the fish and chips experience is the wonderful "crunchy batter" on the fish that was missing in this interpretation. We enjoyed (very much) the Rice Chicharron; a super fresh big eye tuna, green onions, watermelon radish, avocado, osetra caviar onto of a large rice cracker. The fish was tasty and paired so very well with the cracker underneath. We enjoyed our outside seat - it allowed our party to spread out and enjoy the April evening. The waterfall out back along with the trees transformed us from Westlake to vacation elsewhere! A great spot for a sushi celebration anytime of the year! read more

It saddens me to write a negative review for Onyx. My husband and I have dined here many times and it used to be our go-to date night spot. Between the food, the service and the ambience, we loved coming here. I also want to mention that they did a wonderful job during the pandemic and were compliant with all the safety protocols, while also providing a great dining experience. They had to close down for about a year, due to a fire, I believe. They opened back up a few months ago and we were thrilled to return. However, it was immediately clear that the restaurant menu was not the same. Someone in management made the very unfortunate decision to revamp the menu entirely and remove their best items. It also appears that they have a new head sushi chef. Our favorite rolls are gone (hayabusa roll, toro taku roll), and have been replaced by underwhelming, mediocre rolls that lack flavor. The nigiri used to be outstanding, but the quality of the fish has gone way down. They now have an abundance of hot appetizers, which might apeal to some people. However, I couldn't care less about hot appetizers at a sushi restaurant. I want the focus to be on the nigiri, sashimi and rolls. When we spoke to one of the sushi chefs (Scott) about the change in the menu, he was kind enough to bring out a custom roll that he made, which was absolutely delicious. No joke- management needs to consult with Scott on how to improve the menu because he understands what the customers want. I will say that the service is still excellent. The hosts are very professional, the waiters are so kind and the busboys are always hustling. The drink list is great and they offer a lovely selection of wine and cocktails. However, unless the menu vastly improves, my husband and I will not be returning. The high prices are insulting, quite frankly, given the quality of the sushi. My message to Onyx is- do better. read more

Definitely recommend this place. It is located within the Four Season's in Westlake. The parking is easy and the grounds are beautiful. We were seated promptly and the staff was all very attentive and knowledgeable about the food and the ingredients. Every dish was beautifully presented. What's not to love about the renovated Onyx at the FourSeasons in Westlake Village? Definitely 4.5 stars!! It's beautiful, intimate and the service is spectacular!! Jesus was my waiter and he knows how to treat customers!! I usually sit at the bar and Keith is one of my favorite sushi chefs but I opted for a table last night. The sushi bar is now on the opposite side of the restaurant and there is a beautiful fish tank behind it. I ordered the truffle edamame which wasn't very truffle-y for $9. I also had hamachi crudo was was EXCELLENT!! It was perfectly tender and moist! I had the manga roll without rice and it was an interesting flavor profile with 3 types of fish. This was such a mixed bag of delightful and disgusting that I'm not sure how many stars to give. I am going to split the difference and say three stars, but this is how it breaks down: Our server Ocean was lovely, very attentive, very kind, gave all around good service. Her recommendations for starters were all delicious. The staff were attentive and friendly, accommodating our elderly parents needs with kindness and discretion. The decor is modern and feels luxe. Sounds great, right? The 'regular' sushi was good, the fish was fresh and well cut. But there were some random items on the menu that sounded good in theory but were absolutely mind bogglingly bad. The "risotto" was supposedly sushi rice, but was just flavorless plain short grain rice, drowned in an insipid broth with minuscule bits of snow crab and seaweed. It was soupy, but served on a flat plate. I suppose it was meant to look like a risotto, but it was nearly impossible to eat with chopsticks or even a fork. I can't imagine any actual Asian person created this dish, because most Asian cultures put rice in a bowl in order to eat it. There was lobster, but it was overcooked and tough. The chef's choice nigiri was okay, but one expects more than just the usual types of fish, no? Something a little more interesting than tamago, ebi, and unagi? I love unagi, so much that I ordered three pieces separately. Chef's choice implies something special. This was not special, though $6 more expensive than if I'd just ordered 6 pieces of nigiri separately. All in all a mixed bag, some delicious bits and some not so delicious, adding up to a solid Meh. read more

I feel I'm rounding up or maybe even donating a star here. Bottom line is that the service and food did not match the price or the expectations. I was really hoping I had found a slightly over-priced-but-super-high-quality sushi bar I could call home. But it was missing a few things. The server was cool... and his back-up guy (busser?) was cool and the two girls doing the seating were cool. But the fish was a little mediocre and the rolls uninspired. If the food is gonna be average, you have to step it up everywhere else... and they don't. Made ressies (on Open Table) for the outdoor seating and it was a problem (that got resolved quickly) even tho there was only one other group out there. It would have been nice to know that a wedding taking place on a nearby lawn was going to really hamper conversation at the table, the cold sake was not really cold, everything seemed like it was going about 25% slower than it should have been going. (We didn't bag on them... like I said, the server was nice... they did mention that a few people called in sick. Could be.) I mean... this is a restaurant at a FOUR SEASONS! Didn't that used to mean something? I was expecting something like just-below-one-Michelin-Star... or a Nobu vibe... maybe Asanebo? This was more like a Marmalade Cafe vibe. BUT... we are recovering from a pandemic, someone else paid the bill, I might have caught them on an off evening. But they had the freshly grated real wasabi on everyone's dishes and they didn't even mention it... nice touch. read more

The hamachi ponzu was fine, but not as good as other versions I've had where the sauce is less vinegary. The dynamite roll was a nice combination of crunchy and chewy textures and sweet and spicy flavors. The best item we had was actually a garlic chicken noodle side dish that was plenty for two people to share as an entree.
