This restaurant was really good. The service was pretty good too. I had a quick catch with one of the items I ordered--I have a shellfish allergy and ordered the fried catfish nuggets. Right as I was preparing to eat, I thought to ask if they were fried in the same grease as the shrimp and other shellfish items and turns out they were. So glad I asked, but that made me wait longer to actually eat. It was no fault to the restaurant, I just was really hungry. I'm giving them a three because they're open and the staff was very delightful. However I will say I'm disappointed in the food. We ordered the family meal. 16 wings, 6 pieces of whiting, three large sides: yams, Mac n cheese, greens. $45 not a bad deal. Outside of the yams everything else was flavorless. The fish didn't have much seasoning despite being fried. Neither did the wings. The macaroni and cheese is probably going in the trash unfortunately. I really wanted to give them a chance. I was so excited when learning that Oohh's and Aahh's was opening a second location. I've been a fan of their flagship U Street location for years. The second location is adjacent to the Walmart on Georgia Ave in Brightwood. However, this restaurant is a disappointment to their brand. I started writing this review inside the place as I'd been waiting on my takeout order going 30+ minutes. SHORT VERSION (if you don't want to read too much): They don't take phone orders after 3:30 PM, online menu and hours of operation differ from the in-store menu and hours, staff is unprofessional and lacks urgency, and they gave me average, lukewarm Mac n Cheese/Yams with overcooked shrimp. -------------------------------------------------- **Subpar Customer Service**: #1) They wouldn't take an order over the phone. I called ahead, hoping I could order my dinner and swing by to pick it up. To my dismay, I was told they don't take phone orders after 3:30. Huh? Which makes no sense because this area is primarily residential, so who would be calling in to pick up food besides the Walmart workers? I asked her would it be a long wait if I came in to place my order and she said the place was empty. So why not just take the phone order? #2): the online menu and hours of operation differ from the actual in-store menu and hours. I had my heart set on meatloaf, which was online but not offered at this location. On Thursday, they close at 7 even though the website says 10. #3): the staff is extremely unprofessional everyone is mostly friendly, but they lack professionalism. They joke with each other loudly. The guy who was opening my trays to show me the orders had dirt all under his nails. No one is moving with any sense of urgency. **Dissapointing Food** #1) I've been a huge Oohh's and Aahh's fan for years, but the Georgia Avenue location has made me question if I'll ever visit either location again. The mac and cheese at U Street used to be the best I had ever had. I'm not sure if the recipe has changed across the board or if the Georgia Avenue location is lacking, but the mac and cheese was average at best. #2) My food was lukewarm. I was going literally just 5 minutes away from the restaurant to eat with my family and I had to warm up my food. #3) My shrimp was overcooked. I don't know if it's because it was lukewarm and I had to warm it up, or whether it was already overcooked. The meat was tough and rubbery. The only good part about it was the shrimp's coating. #4) The portions are smaller. The sides at the U street location usually are spilling in the takeout tray (in a good way). Pretty good food. The staff is nice and the service is good. The fried whiting was tasty as was the mac and cheese and sweet potato cake. The underwhelming things were the collards, which were way too sweet, and the blackened whiting, which was not blackened and barely had any flavor. When I visited in the past, my family would always take me to Mid-Atlantic or Carolina Kitchen. Each place had a "portion" of the dish or side item that was "Ohmigosh" this is good but not like my grandma's food. So going to Oohhs & Aahhs, I pretty much expected the same experience. But I was pleasantly surprised...I have ordered delivery twice and taken groups of 4 to dine-in twice. I have had the following: Lightly battered shrimp - cabbage, Mac n cheese Sampler platter - includes ALL sides Fried whiting - greens and yams Beef short ribs - mashed potatoes and yams Meatloaf - Portion size - check Texture - check Flavor - check (but I will say, the gravy is a little too salty for me, but I monitor my sodium intake and taste salt easily on foods) Now, they are NOT great on service. But, I figured out the issue. While the servers try to be nice, they are just younger people who have not been trained well. Not sure if the servers are family members of the owner or some sort of "help the kids" program. I tried the U street location and I wasn't impressed. This location is a covered gem by the ratchet Walmart ‍. The restaurant is nice inside with ample seating. I ordered take out and they were fast. My food was given to me within ten minutes. The staff were very nice and helpful. There's free two hour parking on the side. I enjoyed my food and the cornbread is yummy. (My favorite) I wasn't a huge fan of the yams .., there's a interesting apple taste to them. My turkey wings and Mac and cheese were very good. I went to the Georgia Ave location because U St. (in general) is always busy, so I didn't want to even try driving over there. The food and environment was amazing. Mark (The GM) was super friendly and gave us some good conversation. Our waiter, Chazz, was a really nice guy as well. This was such a disappointing dining experience. We decided to come here after Milk & Honey (across the street) told it us it would be a two hour wait. Oohh's and Aahh's is known for their soul food so we were surely shocked that our dining experience lacked soul, food, oohh's, and aahh's. As someone who has dined in before during the week and has ordered delivery from this place several time, I cannot believe the customer service or food me and my friends received yesterday. First, it took forever to alert somebody that we wanted to be seated. We were escorted a dark upstairs space where a party of at least 20 already was. it was so dark we could barely see. We asked the employee if he could turn on the lights. He said yes but they would complaint hat the lights make it too hot up there. Who is "they", we never found out. We had no menus and it took about 15 mins for somebody to come and deliver those. She took our drink orders and returned maybe out 10- 15 minutes later to take our orders. Our waitress was very unprofessional and had an attitude that radiated off of her. This set the tone for our dining experience. As a party of six in a loud upstairs space, our waitress refused to move around the table to take each person's order. Instead, she yelled "next" across the table. We waited over an hour and a half for our mediocre food. During this time, the large party that was there before us walked out due to horrible service, more big parties were brought upstairs, and a party of six that arrived at least 20 minutes after us receive our food before us. We also witnessed the waitress bring a side of untouched macaroni that was placed at the abandoned large party's table to the other table of six, as if she hadn't just placed it on an empty table 5-10 minutes ago. During this time, we requested water and drink refills that we never got and kept being told that out food was on the way. It got to the point that my friend had to go downstairs to speak to management about our orders and why we hadn't received them. About 10 minutes later, someone who I assume to be management came up and apologized and said they would be assigning us a new waiter. Magically, our food came out instantly after this and we finally got our refills. And this is where it gets even worse. My shrimp and grits was disgusting. I don't even know if what I was served should be called shrimp and grits. The sweet grits were topped with shredded (not melted) cheese, gravy, sauteed peppers, and blackened shrimp. After stirring it well and trying to enjoy it, it still didn't taste good. Someone else at our table, also had shrimp and grit. She had the same complaint. They ended up giving us 50% off the bill but only took one of the shrimp and grits orders off. We left disappointed and hungry. I cannot see myself dining at this establishment again. Oohh's and Aahh's has an opportunity to benefit from the long wait times at Milk & Honey across the street, but will continue to disappoint new and returning customers if they continue deliver dining experiences like the one me and friends had. If you're in search of authentic soul food, look no further. I had a craving for fried whiting and took to Yelp to find the best local spot. We ordered two meals, the first being fried whiting w/ medium mac n cheese & green beans and the other dinner was fried catfish w/ medium collards and yams. The fish was seasoned perfectly, little to no bones, and portion size satisfying. What I most enjoyed were their collards and yams. The green beans were a little stiff but that was my fault. I accidentally ordered two collards while placing my order online and when I got to the store, I saw I had made a mistake. They were nice enough to cook some green beans up real quick for me and swap them out without making a fuss. Their customer service is excellent. It was nice "seeing" warm faces and yes, I can tell if someone is smiling/happy even with a mask on especially with their tone of voice. Inside the restaurent was bigger than I expected for the location. They have outdoor dining if you don't want to eat inside. They're located next to Walmart and easy to spot. You're not able to park in front on the main street but we found side street 2-hour free parking. I was extremely disappointed in not only the service, but also how the manager handled the situation. As a college administrator who brought 40+ students to our establishment, they were absolutely unprepared for our arrival. 1) We called days in advance to inform them that we would have close to 50 individuals in our party, they weren't ready. 2) The young lady who served us insisted that she didn't need any help serving because she wanted the tip from the gratuity. I heard her say that personally. 3) She took food orders and drink orders at the same time. SHES THE ONLY ONE SERVING 40+ folks! 4) It took 45 minutes after she took the orders just to get drinks. 5) Not everyone got drinks 6) We had to get our own drinks and they left us a brown wash tub for dishes.... but this had ice cubs in it but no scope to scope out the ice. Obviously not sanitary. 7) Once the food came out, 30% of the orders were incorrect or weren't put in correctly into the system or weren't put into the system at all. 8) The air condition didn't work. 40+ black folks in one room with no A/C eating.... is disrespectful. 9) The waitress mentioned that we could divide the checks once finished. The waitress brought us two whole checks. Equaling up to $950.00. We get up to the cash register to get the checks corrected due to negligence, the manager says they (students) can't pay individually. Soooo myself and work colleagues divided the checks and paid the bill. #trash I will NEVER go back to this establishment NOR suggest it to anyone else! Sorry to say that the service at Oohh's and Aahh's leaves something to be desired. This is the third time we have been there. It is as if they are doing you a favor to wait on you. The service is slow which we attribute to the food being prepared fresh. But the waitress is completely non caring. We ordered un-sweet ice tea. One glass came no ice, the other full of ice. I asked for some ice the waitress took my glass and filled it up with ice and left it sitting on the counter while she played on her phone . She asked if my husband wanted ketsup and never came back with it. After about 15 minutes waiting for my tea, my husband got up and got it from the counter.
