The catfish dinner is spot-on. I love the collard greens which accompany; they're fresh with a deft touch of vinegar. The potato salad is traditional, something my mom would make and yummy. I didn't find the preparation of whiting fish as top notch. The fountain drinks are generous in size. The strawberry lemonade is balanced, just what I like. My wife found a new place for lunch. Oohs and Aahs Soul Food Restaurant on Georgia Ave. We arrived just before the restaurant opened, the staff greeted us with smiles, soft neosoul music playing. the place appears recently renovated, with windows opening to the street and a back room available. Concerning the food. My wife ordered fried catfish, cabbage and macaroni and cheese. The catfish filets were seasoned and fried perfectly. The cabbage was well seasoned and the first forkful of baked macaroni and cheese told me all I needed to know as it pulled away with several strings of cheese that showed how dense and cheesy it was. My wife said her entire meal was well prepared and presented. She added after eating such good filling food she needed a nap. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles. The server offered chicken breast, thighs or wings. I selected the chicken breast. When my meal arrived I loved the dusting of powdered sugar and when I cut into the waffle it seemed to be flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg, which paired wonderfully with with the sweetness of the syrup, against the savory flavors of the fried chicken. Amazing food and service!! In town for a sorority convention and got a recommedation to try this spot. So glad we did! We arrived about 30 minutes before closing and were still seated. The ordering process was easy and thorough. The food came out PIPPING HOT and the food was delicious!! The waiter (maybe Owner) Kenny was helpful and accommodating. What do you call it when you do the same thing expecting different results? Oh yeah...insanity! I've had Oohh's & Aahh'a before yet I somehow thought things would be different this time because it's been a minute since my last visit. I had the catfish with yams, macaroni and cheese and a side of potato salad. I even added on a piece of the strawberry cake to satisfy my sweet tooth. Here's what I thought about each item. Catfish: The seasoning is too salty just like I remembered but the dinner comes with 2 pieces unlike other places where you only get 1. Yams: I didn't care for them and tasted like pie filling like I saw on another review. Macaroni and cheese: I also didn't care for it and was flavorless. The cheese was not melted and gooey like a good Mac and cheese always is. Potato salad: Decent enough but not the best by far. The large chunks of potatoes were inconsistent in size which is a personal pet peeve for potato salad for me. Strawberry cake: Dense and had an odd texture. I'm from the Deep South so I love, and I do mean love soul food. This restaurant did not disappoint. I went to this restaurant to celebrate my personal new year aka my birthday. We decided to sit outside since it was a nice evening. I got the fried chicken wings with collard greens and potato salad, my daughter got the fried whiting with Mac and cheese and collard greens. The server we had was nice, but preoccupied, he was on his phone a lot, I assumed he had an emergency or something, but it was weird. He did give me a free slice of cake for my birthday, it was a strawberry cake. The cake was delicious. The fried chicken wings were very succulent and still crispy. They were seasoned to perfection. I ordered a 10 piece but only got 8, I just charged it to the game :/ My daughter loved her fried whiting, she said it was so delicious. Our collard greens were delicious, the macaroni and cheese was good, the potato salad was ok, not as good as my grandmother's but it was still tasty. Fantastic Black Owned Establishment!! We ventured here after taking youngest on a local college visit. I had to visit after reading several of my Yelp VIP's ratings and pics. Establishment was easy to find w plenty of inexpensive street parking. We walked in and the dining space was a welcoming open space where we were able to choose our seats. Kamille assisted us and gave great recommendations. We ordered the HH Wings, Baked Chix Breast Meal, Catfish Platter, 10 Wingette Meal w plenty of sides galore and a piece of Corn Bread. We loved each and everything ordered. Everything came out hot, well seasoned and plentiful. Kamille was great w visiting our table at the perfect times and making sure we did not want for anything. This place came highly recommended, but it just didn't do it for me. First off, I sat there for almost 10 minutes before the server even came. Then the heavyset lady with the dreads, whom I'm assuming is the manager, spoke to the table of the white people in front of me but kept it pushing right past me like I wasn't even there. Now let's talk about the food. The whiting was okay but who serves fish with bones in it in 2025? Pay the extra money for boneless fish because serving fish with bones in it, and not even telling the customer could've ended all bad. That's a choking hazard waiting to happen. Anyways, then to top it off everything was SUPER salty. I can't stand soul food spots that feel like they have to cover it in Old Bay or Lawry's in order to season it. I felt like I left with high blood pressure after all of that saltiness. Then the mac and cheese was super oily and greasy and the potato salad tasted store bought. The shrimp and crab fritters were aight but $17 for 3 little fritters was kind of ridiculous, plus they were small and had so much Old Bay it took over the flavor of the seafood itself. THEN to top if off, I have NEVER in my life been to a so-called dine-in spot and they server your food in plastic to-go containers with plastic forks and knives. Also that red velvet cake did not taste homemade and it actually tasted old. When cake is fresh, the icing does not separate from the cake, even when it's refrigerated. Lastly, how do you have unsweet ice tea but only in the bottle, and then when you ask for sweetener, they claim they don't have any? HOW do you have UNSWEET tea with NO sweetener? Lastly, I do not like the fact that they add a 20% gratuity "to all dine in orders" without telling you beforehand. This is actually illegal in most states. As soon as I entered the establishment I was greeted by a hostess. I told her I was placing an order to go and she showed me where to go. Upon placing my order I was told it would be a 20-25 minute wait on food. That's a plus because most establishments won't tell you that until you order your food. I ordered cornbread which they forgot. This is the 2nd time I've ordered fro them and they've forgotten the cornbread. I even added in my comments to ensure the cornbread was in the bag. I've NEVER heard of or had sweet collards before and though it wasn't bad, it wasn't my vibe. I also sampled the yams too and they were sweet and more like a soufflés but delicious. It didn't take long for me to realize sugar is their main ingredient lol. Even my cabbage was sweet (face palm). I probably should had gotten the fried whiting instead bc even though it was seasoned, it definitely needed more. I had to add hot sauce and salt and even the hot sauce was sweet. Now the peach cobbler- to me- was breading pudding with peaches. Definitely good flavor and a highlight for the food. My friend enjoyed her Turkey wings and the meat was falling off the bone. To be honest, I had avoided Oohs and Aahs for years on U Street because of the location and i thought the food was overpriced and just ok in terms of taste and quality. I decided to give this location a chance during this covid-19, stay at home period and have had overall a good experience. I have ordered via Uber Eats and take-out. The staff is pleasant and accommodating. The food is decent. I recommend the fried fish, mac-n-cheese and potato salad. I have to give a special shout out about the potato salad. You CAN NOT eat everyone's potato salad. That's like rule number 1 for sure of soul food. Some people over or under cook the potatos, the flavor is over, or its too runny with mayo and mustard, or its spoiled (sadly, yes - you can't eat everyone's mayo based products). It's so stressful because you want your food right but you end up spending a lot of time doing the hunt and peck method on the computer just to pick everything. The corn bread portion was very small. We ordered 3 potato salads but only 1 arrived. however, in the past it was always good. When called the restaurant about the missing item they seem to know exactly what was missing. However, they stated that since it was ordered through Ubereats, there was nothing they could do about it. We received No Refund or the missing items delivered. A friend that lives in the area swears by this place. I love Southern food and supporting black-owned businesses so trying this place out was a no-brainer! My party of 10 arrived around 4pm on a Saturday just in time for Happy Hour and we were seated upstairs right away. The hostess was very welcoming and our server was friendly. I ordered the Hennessy Sangria and it was STRONG! The bartender definitely has a heavy hand. My friend enjoyed her turkey wings. The chicken wings were a good size and tasty and I loved their greens but my favorite thing was the catfish nuggets. I'll definitely get that next time. It was seasoned and fried to perfection! I did the mistake of not getting them tossed in sauce and asking for it on the side because of course the sauce was missing from my order... I like to order wings like that so I can taste how their seasoned. The weird thing about that, at least for my order, some pieces had great taste, and some tasted like absolutely nothing. I don't know what happened that the seasoning wasn't evenly distributed but it is what it is.. the sauce would have masked that I'm sure. As for crunchiness, there's no lack of that and I enjoyed the skins texture (and I enjoyed the few pieces that were actually seasoned, like others said, it had good taste). Stopped by for lunch while in town for a visit. Underground parking is available by turning on the street just north of restaurant. There's about 7 or 8 tables outside, just below street level. There is a special lunch menu; note that not everything on the menu is available during lunch. Ordered the catfish with grits and a side of yams. The catfish was lightly breaded and delicious, and the grits were a perfect complement. The grits were topped with just the right amount of peppers, onions, and gravy. The real star of the lunch for me were the yams, kind of like pumpkin pie without the crust. Although it was listed as a side item, it could also serve as a dessert if you ask me. Service was excellent. In fact, we accidentally left our credit card behind and the chef ran us down in the Walmart to return it! Keep in mind that this level of quality comes at a price. We were told we had to pay for another mimosa. We had not closed out or paid for anything so this confused many of us. I am very unhappy now because this is toxic and an extreme health hazard. This is very sloppy and not good at all. Ive never had an ENTIRE WRAPPER cooked into my food. This is not right, I'm definitely second guessing everything else on my plate and the manner in which it was cooked. The food was impeccable. I loved the flavors and presentation. Our waitress was amazing. She made up for the curt impersonal hostess that seated us. I expected a little more from the vibe. I appreciated the soundtrack. With food this amazing, a few things should be highlighted. #1 there's only one piece of art hanging in the downstairs area that throws everything off. Add more or present it a the focal point of the restaurant. Display your accolades. I only knew they were on the food network after seeing a glimpse of one of the waitresses shirts. That should be posted on the exterior and visible to draw foodies. A gentle came upstairs and greeted all tables except ours and I felt slighted after getting back watching the episode. He actually looked like the owner. I guess he didn't come over because we only had water at the time. The only side dish I didn't like was the Mac&Cheese. read more
