This was my 2nd visit to S&G, after I had a craving for fried fish. The first visit I ordered at the restaurant and this time I called ahead. I recommend calling ahead! Both times the service was excellent!! This is a carryout spot that sells fried fish, fried shrimp, fried chicken, french fries (I've had all of these), and a few other items. Although this would be considered a "hole in the wall", it's clear that the chef knows what she's doing. The food is seasoned well and the shrimp are butterflied!!!!! Since i was a kid i disnt think i liked fried fish. Greasy weird taste. who it was being cooked wrong. There is nothing better than a well cooked peice of fish. I still the ljs fish planks of old. The first week after moving nearby, I remember biking by seeing a huge group of people hanging in front of S&G, so I knew I'd have to drop by. They ran out of chicken wings tonight, so my friend and I got the whiting platter with potato salad and mac and cheese. Added a half lb of fried shrimp to round out the order. Everything was made fresh and smelled delicious. They had some dry spices to add on top of your fried stuff (i.e. lemon pepper, etc), but we just went w their packaged sauces of ketchup, hot sauce, and tartar sauce. Noooo regrets! Everything was delicious, and I surprised I enjoyed the mac n cheese and potato salad. I typically find both of those sides are bland when I buy them outside, but these were flavorful and tasty. Arrived in Washington and wasn't sure what I wanted for dinner, so I went to my trusty friend, Yelp for some assistance. I found S&G Seafood House, which had a 4.25 star rating. I figured this place had to be pretty good. I placed my takeout order via Ubereats. I ordered the fish and wing platter that came with fries even though I didn't want any fries (cost 13.00) . I added mac n cheese for $3.00 and string beans for $3.00. I eagerly awaited the arrival of my evening meal. Everything arrived timely and was still warm to the touch. The restaurant even added hot sauce, tarter sauce and utensils as requested. I cracked open the large container and found two very large pieces of fish, two wings, and an abundance of french fries. The two smaller containers contained my sides. The mac n cheese was not good. The contents tasted like buttered elbow noodles with melted cheese. I felt like the mac n cheese might have been made on a stove top and not baked in an oven. It was just not good at all. I moved on to the string beans. I was scared to try them bc I noticed the absence of smoked meat, which is usually an indicator of fresh string beans as opposed to canned string beans. Welp, the string beans were definitely canned beans with some added flavor. Didn't think I would say this, but the string beans were the highlight of my meal. I moved on to the fish and wings. Let's just say I needed the hot sauce for every bit of fish and chicken. Without the hot sauce both items lacked any kind of flavor. I expected A LOT MORE from a place named S&G Seafood House. I hate to be the first 3 star review, but in comparison to the many soul food places I have dined at (in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New York, Georgia and Louisiana) S&G fell way short. If it wasn't for the YELP reviews, I'd never found nor considered this place. I was in search of some seafood in NE WDC so I GPS'd my way to SGs. They don't have any parking, since they are located on the corner of a hill so I parked in the neighborhood. I walked in to well kept establishment where I was greeted and ordered my food. 10 mins later my whiting (fish), hush puppies and collard greens were ready. Everything was good and fresh. And I was pleasantly surprised by the hush puppies, because most places can't get them right; these were delicious. This little hidden pleasure was one I past a couple hundred times and finally I decided to stop in and try it after reading a few reviews. The shrimp, fish and fries were hot and fresh. The service was quick but I called in my order while I was trying to find a parking spot. This is the most difficult thing here and I would advise not going when school has let out for the day! I wanted some Crocker and shrimp. The combo only comes with whiting so I ordered the Crocker entree and added shrimp to it ($2/piece). My sides were greens and potato salad. The fish was ok, needed seasoning. The lady did ask if I wanted to put something on it once the food was done. I said no, this was my first time so I didn't want to over season it. Next time I will add some on it. The shrimp was butterflied. The greens and potato salad were tasty. The potato salad a bit pepper for my taste. All in all, the food was ok. Recently ordered a fish platter from S & G seafood from Uber eats. The delivery came in about 45 minutes but they are not that close to me. I ordered based on the 4.6 star rating it received from Uber eats. I got Widing a side of collard greens mac & cheese, fries and of course a lemon pound cake to complete the meal! The mac and cheese was delicious and flavorful. The greens were ok, but were a perfect complement to the meal. The fries and fish were a little like warm but nothing a pop on the oven couldn't fix! Whiting well flavored and crispy and delicious with a lil hot sauce of course. The lemon cake, yaaaas! It was dense, yet moist and a Perfect finish to my already full meal! So here is a place that is slightly in the cut on 7th street. This is a carryout minority owned establishment that's worth checking out. I had the fried chicken wings and shrimp for $12 not including tax. I got the 2 chicken wings and 5 large shrimp with fries and bread. The chicken wings are pretty large with a nice crunchy batter. They're not heavily seasoned, but still carries a nice flavor to it. The shrimp are pretty large and they butterfly them also in a pretty decent shrimp batter. Fries are pretty good, but nothing spectacular. They do give you plenty of them though. The downside of this establishment is price. Unfortunately, items on the menu do get a bit pricey for what you're getting. If I was going to get just shrimp, I would have paid $13 for 6 shrimp. They are slightly larger than other establishments, but maybe with an extra side or something, it wouldn't have bothered me as much. The last thing is parking, which is kinda rough. There are "No parking, standing at anytime" signs on both sides of the street of the establishment. It sits on a funky intersection, so you kinda park at your own risk, but if you call it in, you can be in and out. I think it's worth checking out, but probably won't be a frequent establishment that I would visit regularly only due to the prices. I will go back and try their fish and other sides soon. This places is legit! The customer service was absolutely great with the ladies being sure I understood what I was getting. I was amazed at the size of the shrimp and whiting that I got along with the sweet potato and green beans. The food was absolutely delicious with the fish being breaded well and the fish still retaining some moisture and not being dry. I would recommend that they add a little bit more season to the batter or marinate the fish before cooking to enhance the flavor. Other than that I'll becoming back. read more

I interned in this neighborhood this summer, and if you've ever been to Edgewood, you'll probably know that unless you want to walk to Rhode Island Ave or towards CUA, there's really no good food within a 10/15 minute radius. That was an issue for me on those 95 degree days when talking a 15 minute walk to go get food was not happening, and that's where S&G came in. This place is a gem. I've had the crispy chicken sandwich a couple of times, which is awesome because they serve it on a buttered bun, and if you ask for onions, they don't give you raw onions - they give you possibly some of the best grilled onions ever. The fries are always fried to order, and while I believe they come from frozen, they're always cooked well and perfectly salted. These little things are what make a hole in the wall like S&G so good. I've also had the fried tilapia platter. The batter they use on their fish is so flavorful and crispy, and really light. I don't eat a lot of seafood, so I can't tell you how it is comparatively, but I could not have imagined a better execution of a dish as simple as fried fish. The chicken wings are also really good, very flavorful, and they go SO well with Old Bay - make sure you sprinkle some on if you get them. My favorite sides there are the fries and the mac and cheese - unlike a lot of other soul food mac and cheese, you can see strings of cheese still intact, and not in a mushed up mess. The one thing that really stands out to me more than anything though - this food is PIPING hot. As someone who microwaves food she just took off the stove, I really do appreciate that. I have gotten food from S&G, taken 5/10 minutes to walk back to the office and start eating, and have seen literal steam still rising from the food. I got a few of my coworkers to try it, and they all also had positive things to say. If you're in the neighborhood, instead of heading to the Chipotle or McDonalds on Rhode Island Ave, take a little walk and support a local business. read more

When it comes to hole in the wall DC spots there aren't many people whose opinion I trust more than the omniscient Pooh B, so when trying to satiate my fried chicken craving that I failed miserably at earlier in the day I was pleased to see this place pop up on my radar after a quick stop into the nearby Home Depot (aka third circle of Hell). You never know what to expect from these types of places. I affectionately refer to them with Suzy as "curry outs", based on an interaction I had with a local H Street area resident, inquiring where I could find one such place. My attempts to route her to the nearest curry selling business were quickly corrected, although phonetically still off base. Still, it's become one of my favorite DC-isms. No photos of this place or the food left me skeptical as well, along with the fact I would be arriving about 15 minutes before their listed closing time. Well, sometimes going with your gut pays off, and it certainly did here. Despite the rather dingy looking exterior, the interior is kept remarkably clean (especially for a place that specializes in fried foods) and about as welcoming as any of these places can look. They even take credit card! the 2 ladies inside were both really friendly as well, if I lived in the neighborhood I would probably be giving them regular business. Given the name of the places, and the other positive reviews, I couldn't pass up getting some fish along with my fried chicken, so I went with the combo that's 2 pieces of fish and 2 chicken wing+drums, along with a side of fries, for about $13 after tax. Everything was fried to order, and they used a different vat for the chicken and fries than the fish, a nice bonus. By the time I got home (about 15 minutes) the moisture in the bag had made the fries a bit limp, but the chicken and fish both held up well. The fish was outstanding, in fact it's some of the best fried fish I've ever had...perfectly flaky with the ideal amount of crust. The chicken was also fantastic, with that slightly crispy skin that's also fried enough to make it somewhat firm. The pieces were large, not quite jumbo size, but big enough to easily stand on their own if you wanted to pass on the fish. They also threw in their version of mumbo sauce, which was a bit sweeter than I like without the requisite heat. I wouldn't call this place a destination, as there are numerous similar business dispersed through the DC neighborhoods, but if you happen to find yourself in this particular part of town and aren't sure where to go, your chances of leaving here satisfied should be quite high. read more

Sometimes that craving hits and you gotta do something about it. Now when a craving for fried seafood hits, I only have to walk across the Franklin St bridge to S&G Seafood House. You get your choice of whiting, croaker, and some shellfish options, all fried to order. I like to keep it OG at S&G and go with the whiting, and at S&G you get a lot.... 4 fillets, hot and crispy. A generous helping of hot sauce (or tartar sauce, if you swing that way) and I'm good to go. Craving satisfied, all for under $10. While I want to judge S&G on their product as they present it and I'm hesitant to critique them for something they DON'T do, I can't help but wish they used cornmeal coating instead of generic fish fry. Once you've had fish fried in cornmeal breading, nothing will compare. NOTHING. Fish fried in cornmeal turns out extra crunchy, and the sweetness of cornmeal just elevates the tastiness to another level. S&G would really be able to differentiate themselves by doing a cornmeal breading, so here's hoping that maybe they'll read this and consider.... I recommend getting a platter so you can choose two of the sides on offer. The potato salad and green beans are very good, but the cole slaw is too vinegary for my liking... I'd cut the vinegar in half and add a touch of sugar. They also have french fries, yams, and hopefully next time I stop in S&G will have collards available, which have been absent during my visits thus far. The people that run S&G are incredibly friendly, and sometimes when you know the care that goes into making the food, it can contribute to the satisfaction. Good food, good people, good neighborhood.... hopefully they'll be successful, improve on customer feedback, and continue offer Brooklanders a place to satisfy our fried fish cravings. read more
