As someone who grew up eating onigiri, I've always DREAMT of a restaurant solely dedicated to delicious rice triangles, stuffed with meat, wrapped with seaweed. Imagine how excited I was when Oori opened, a ten minute walk from me!! Unfortunately, Oori's only getting three stars from me due to the service. The cashiers and servers seemed to be confused and untrained. The main cashier was rude and seemed kind of out of it, to be honest, and the entire exchange threw me off. The actual rice triangles are delicious, however. I got two chicken ones, for $3.92 (what a steal!!) in total, thanks to the $1 for your first rice triangle deal. Meat was perfectly seasoned, incredibly warm, and soooo tender. The nori wrapper and rice perfectly complemented the meat. Two rice triangles are enough for a lunch, about the size of a fist, though I could definitely eat endless amounts. I'm unsure about the restaurant's hours. The sign at the restaurant, their online hours, and their Yelp hours all say different things - I'd recommend calling ahead on the day of and asking for hours, until they get that further sorted out. Parking is incredibly limited. There's rarely parking available on College Ave, and I ended up scouting a spot on the side street. When I started my car while leaving, a Prius was already waiting for me to leave and take my spot, to give you an idea. Overall, despite the mediocre service, I'm definitely coming back. The food is pretty tasty, but the owner/manager can use some lessons in customer service. I had a take out order which was botched, but I didn't discover the incorrect order until getting home. At that point, I was not going to return just to swap my order. I reached out to Oori, and Chris responded offering to refund and comp me a future order. A few weeks later, I was in the area and decided to take Chris up on his offer. Since there is no one staffing the counter, I couldn't get anyone's attention to ask for my refund. I noticed someone yelling at an employee in a back area, and the cooks seemed to signal he was the owner or manager. Since he was yelling at this other employee for ten minutes in an open area, I felt weird interrupting his tirade. Eventually, he finished yelling at the employee, and without smiling or greeting me asked what I wanted. I told him about the misorder, and he said he had no idea what I was talking about. I named dropped his name, and it was then clear we had communicated before (since I had never met him in-person before). Chris asked how I wanted to resolve this, but he was begruding and unfriendly. I asked him to remake my order and we could call it even. I see from some other Yelp reviews mentioning "bad" or "rude" management, they are probably talking about Chris. When we, your customers make an order, it is your job to make it right. If you don't get it right, you need to make it right with a smile, not be a dick about it. read more

It was a pretty satisfying lunch and cheap as well! I would say the spicy shrimp was my favorite out of the rest, but they were all pretty good. Growing up, my folks would make fun of me for always asking for the leftover white rice to go and eating it either alone or with a bit of sauce. So when I learned about Onigiri, I was thrilled - even if I can't open the prepackaged ones to save my life. My friend and I were having an afternoon in Rockridge, and I needed something simple and quick to eat. Fortunately we came across Oori. While more on the Korean influence, it's still the essential rice triangle with a filling, wrapped in seaweed. For $10 or so you can get 3 with a side of edamame, and fortunately for my vegan friend, there were some options between tofu, kimchi, and veggies. They also do offer meal plates, but come on, the place is called Rice Triangles. Go with the name. I got a short rib and a crab, and my friend the spicy tofu. He really enjoyed his. The crab was great - fresh crab meat, I did add some soy sauce, but was delicious. The short rib did steal the show - full of flavorful meat, I was worried some would spill out, but was able to keep it all contained. They offer complimentary water and hot tea, which is also a nice treat. So if looking for a simple, quick, and affordable meal - worth checking out! read more

Big fan of this place! The triangles are relatively cheap, filling, and delicious! I had the Ahi Tuna and the short rib. The tuna was wonderfully fresh, evident in its texture. It was blissful when paired with Oori's marinade. The short rib was tender, juicy, and well-seasoned. No complaints from me! I absolutely loved this place and will be back very soon. I was especially impressed by the strength of the seaweed and the manner in which the triangle was wrapped. When trying a similar dish at another restaurant, the triangle fell apart. Happy an onigiri shop is more conveniently in my reach than a trip to Japanese grocery stores, but am I entirely satisfied? Sort of! They have an array of different fillings (bulgogi, teriyaki chicken, salmon, unagi, crab, etc) and other rice plate options, but there was a deal for 3 and a free side of "greens" so I went with a combo of crab, salmon, and unagi for around $13, which came with a small cup of edamame. Salmon was kinda sweet with teriyaki, unagi was a generous chunk of your typical unagi, and crab was a little disappointing. Maybe I would have preferred chunks of crab meat but this was just shredded crab mixed with mayo that gave it more volume. biting into it was more of a gooey mayo mess. Each riceball is roughly $3-4+ so a little more expensive than konbini riceballs, but you get a heaping portion of fillings that justify the price I guess. The sad part is that you get half the amount of rice compared to your typical riceball so after a while, it isn't quite as filling! If youre looking to bite into a ball of rice lightly shaped and seasoned with a bit of salt water and eventually hitting the core of filling, this isn't the one! But it is delicious. My -free- side of edamame was just beans, no salt. Don't overdo it for the side of you wanna save a couple of bucks. I guess my preference is a little biased, but I prefer the traditional balance and ratio of Konbini-style onigiri! There's a lot of Korean influence, so I was expecting a bit of a difference. It felt a little underwhelming to my expectations but it's a good place to split a snack if you aren't down to split a rice plate combo somewhere. read more

Disappointing. Not the traditional samgak kimbap - Korean style rice triangles, that I was craving and not really onigiri either. The triangles I tried ranged from unappetizing to mediocre and the Korean/Japanese/American fusion just didn't work for me. The good: love the free barley tea, food tasted fresh, rice was soft and orders came out quickly. The fresh limes were unexpected and a nice addition to the fish triangles and the condiment table had a nice selection of toppings. The bad: the kimchi tasted like it had spicy tomato pasta sauce mixed into it, very strange, and the seaweed was tough and chewy, not crisp like I expect for rice triangles, and the sauce on salmon was too sugary and not very flavorful. And this is a personal preference but I really wished for more traditional filling choices like canned tuna salad, tuna kimchi, dried anchovy, mixed vegetables, etc. read more

When I was feeling poorly, my godson (a sweetie pie) offered to bring me dinner. I'd seen him with a huge chicken teriyaki dinner recently and I asked for that. When he showed up on my doorstep with a still steaming heap of chicken over rice, with small containers of sesame seeds and packets of sauces (soy, sriracha) I couldn't wait to dive in. It was SOOOOOO good!! I demolished it until I was full, and I'd only eaten half it, so got a satisfying lunch again the next day. When he told me where it was from, I heard it as Oar-y or Ohrē, and couldn't find it under those spellings, but when I did a search on chicken teriyaki rockridge I found this and had to laugh. He'd brought me here once before, and I was so focused on the rice triangles I didn't notice the teriyaki plates. I showed up on a Saturday night 20 minutes before closing and my to-go order was assembled and served promptly and courteously - loved that. Some places are so busy getting ready to close (your shift's ending, I feel you) that you feel bad for interrupting, but not here and I appreciated that. The only challenge here is parking. Wanted to leave downtown so as to reduce my parking fees, so I headed over to Rockridge for the express purpose of randomly stumbling on something cool for lunch. I randomly found something very cool. Mission freaking accomplished. I asked the cashier how big the onigiri were, and she said something to the effect of "Oh, the rice triangles? They're about..." and indicated with her hands. Two things here: 1) they are not 'rice triangles' unless you're trying too hard to be hipster or appealing hard to those unfamiliar with Japanese cuisine; 2) she indicated a size that was approximately correct if the whole of the nori wrappings had actually been filled all the way with rice (they weren't). So after receiving my two onigiri (you get free edamame with the purchase of three, but I thought that would have been too much food before seeing the actual size), I realized that I wasn't going to have as much food as I'd anticipated. And I'd skipped breakfast. Oh well. My order was for one salmon onigiri and one kalbi, but I ended up with one salmon and one ahi. Not quite right, but the ahi would have been my third choice anyway, so I didn't complain. Seat yourself, pick up order at the counter (you know, fast casual normal).
