I have ordered takeout and dine in several times from this place and the sushi/sashimi is always fresh and delicious. The price is definitely on the higher end so expect to leave with a big bill but it is worth it. Pre-Covid, we did the Omakese and everything was delicious. Most of the chef special came with the the best fish, king crab, uni, etc. This is definitely one of my favorite LA sushi place to dine. Definitely a meal worth talking about!! Rather than eating in, I decided to do take out and I was still blown away by the presentation! Ordered a day in advance and got to pick up the dinner super quick the following day (only waiting like 5 minutes for them to grab my order). Ordered their Special Omakase and a side of Sake and OO Toro Sushi. Everything was absolutely delicious from the King Crab and what looks like Tiger Shrimp to their mouth melting Sashimi! Looking forward to coming back but might try dining in next time for the experience! So I came here for valentines day with my girl at around 6:00pm. Even though I did not call for a reservation, We were seated relatively quickly. We ordered 2 mixed chirashi with eel, 1 piece of kamatoro sushi, and 2 pieces of aji spanish mackerel. The kamatoro was delicious, fatty piece melted in mouth with great taste. Spanish mackerel was also very good, though I should have eaten a piece of ginger first for better taste. The mixed chirashi with eel was amazing as well. Cuts of fish were generously thick and good quality. There was also some seaweed salad, what I assume to be spicy scallop sashimi, a crab tartare and one other meat which I could not figure out. The eel was cooked well and soft. Overall amazing food and worth its steeper price. My only complaint was the service where I had to call for a waiter a few times until one showed up but I assume it was because of valentines day. I will be coming back for more. read more

Quality is off the charts. Even the Diet Coke, as described by my step dad, was the best he's ever had. We had the Kobe shabu, the meat was super tender expect I think we overcooked ours a bit. Best sushi ever! I've had omakase at Tsukiji Market in Japan and the fish I had here was very similar in terms of the quality and freshness. This place holds true to its four dollar signs that you see; however, it is worth every single penny. If you are on a budget but want to splurge on a nice meal, I recommend coming during lunch time. The chirashi bowl is around $18 before tax and tip which is a very fair price for the quality you are receiving. The standard chirashi bowl will come with a few pieces of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. I normally prefer salmon but the tuna here was exceptional and blew my mind. There will also be tamago, wakame, and spicy salmon in the bowl as well which all complimented the meal well. Our meal also came with tofu and miso soup on the side which were also delicious. Service here is great. Our waitress was kind and answered all of our questions. She also told us about the daily special which was a scallop sashimi with some Japanese sauce (tasted like yuzu). Love this place. Like many sushi joints that's on my list Ootoro Sushi was one of them and did not disappoint one bit. We were on our way to the grandparents and decided to stop by here for lunch. Luckily for us we arrived 15 minutes before it open and was surprised there was a line of 10 peeps form outside of the restaurant. SERVICE: Very friendly. Our server was kindly enough to tell us that our food might take a little long due to the fact that everyone showed up to the restaurant all at once. FOOD: Premium Chirashi Bowl which come with thick and I mean "THICK"cuts of Blue fin tuna, chutoro, toro, yellowtail, kanpachi, salmon, sweet shrimp, uni, blue crab and spicy salmon. Everything in this bowl was very fresh and the amount of food you get you could easily be shared with two people. Toro Don: Fantastic.They were very generous on the toro cuts. Highly recommended this bowl of fresh fatty toro. Salmon & Ikura Bowl: Excellent. Like the chirashi bowl the cuts were amazing and fresh. If you're salmon lovers this is the bowl for you. As someone who loves sushi, I ate at Ootoro Sushi often. My recent experience was extremely disappointing. The quality of the sushi has clearly gone down, with the fish tasting somewhat not as fresh as before and the rolls lacking the freshness and vibrancy that I would expect from a good sushi restaurant. And, to make matters worse, the prices were outrageously high for what we received. I felt that we were paying for the name of the restaurant rather than the quality of the food. Overall, I would not recommend Ootoro Sushi to anyone looking for a good sushi restaurant. Instead, I would suggest checking out Sushi Yuen in the City of Industry, which offers much better quality sushi at a more reasonable omakase price. read more

One of my family's favorite sushi spots! We come here every Father's Day (be advised that they are closed on Sundays though) because my dad loves the sashimi deluxe. The dish comes with a shrimp head that can be either fried or cooked in soup (my dad opts for the soup every time). The rest of us typically order the Chirashi bowl. At first glance it doesn't feel like there's much to the bowl but we always end up leaving full. The thickest cut is typically the tuna, then salmon and yellowtail (which is a shame because that's my favorite). It also comes with two types of seaweed and two types of tuna (albacore tuna and spicy tuna, if I recall correctly). My sister and I absolutely love their wasabi because it's fresh. Our trip last week had my sister checking out the set plates and she chose the miso grilled cod and seared toro salad. We loved both! The cod was grilled so well and the fish stayed tender and buttery. If you're not a fan of buttery fish, this is probably not the way to go. The seared toro salad was just as delicious and the fish melts in your mouth as well. The restaurant is always packed and they don't take reservations for lunch so get there early! My sister had gotten there 15 minutes prior to opening and was fourth on the list. I think they take reservations for dinner but I've yet to go (the dinner pricing is more expensive but I'm guessing they give more variety). read more

So she brought me there on the last day of LA trip. We arrived around 11:30 am and there was already a long line for the restaurant and full house since the restaurant has opened The food ordering method was very easy AKA pick & point, lol. We ordered 2 bowls of Tempura, a Sashimi platter, Spicy tuna handroll, and sear Salmon. The server came back quickly with starters which were Miso soup, and side dish (if I wasn't wrong I believe it's preserved shredded carrot and daikon.) It was very tasty, I hope I can get some more. After a while, our orders had arrived. First is a Sashimi platter which I can tell all meats were very firm but soft enough to melt in the mouth. It's a must-have! Second, Sear Salmon, it's good, but I'm more prefer Hamaji (Yellowtail cheek). Salmon was kinda too normal. It's good but not great. The rest was 2 Bowls of Tempura; shrimps, eggplant, shishito, pumpkin. It's very fresh, the crispy yellowish Pangko coated very well. However, it's our mistake to order 2. 1st bowl was good, but 2nd was the sort of too much-fried thing. Oh I forgot to mention about spicy tuna handroll which was good again. ! We did not have to see the menu and without ordering omakase, she put in orders slowly at the bar so we can experience without feeling rushed. I don't know if she is super amazing or that Ootoro is just wonderful but everything was delicious. My friend & I came here for lunch today. They have very limited outdoor seating so if you plan on dining there, be prepared to wait. Servers were very nice but did not explain to me that the menu was a QR code posted on the table. They just assumed that we had been there before. As for COVID guidelines, tables are well-spaced out; however, if you have a table near the entrance (which we did), waiting customers don't really respect your personal space. Servers wore face masks and some wore them with face shields but did not wear gloves...which kind of irked me as they were touching plates, utensils, etc (minus one star) Now let's get to food. Food was amazing. Everything was fresh and cuts of fish were so thick. We both got the premium chirashi, an order of uni sushi, & an order of halibut sushi. The cuts of fish in the chirashi were so thick and everything was melt-in-your-mouth status. I did not think I would be full off the chirashi bowl, but it was extremely filling. You also get the option of having the shrimp head fried or in soup. We both chose fried & it was delicious. The uni and halibut sushi were amazing as well. Overall, 5 stars for food quality and portion! Although it is on the pricier side, the quality of fish and thick pieces of sushi were justifiable in price. I used to fancy this place a lot several years ago & on, and only dine at the sushi bar w André-san while doing a combination of chef's choice & my own fancy feel-of-the-day omakase. So today I strolled in for lunch about 2-3min before opening and was surprised to see an almost packed house.. I didn't sit at the sushi bar bc I planned on having a chirashi bowl and a combo lunch special (people please don't sit at the bar unless ur ordering sushi &/or sashimi only, know ur role). Yeah that's correct I ate two lunches to the dome so what? Omgoodness the deluxe chirashi lunch bowl for $44.95 has to be one of the best deals ever for the quality & quantity of fish.. there were 3 chunky melt-in-ur mouth pieces of toro, 2 massive pieces of bluefin tuna(some people will have to eat each piece in two bites), 2 salmon, 2 hamachi, surf clam, amaebi w ikura (& ur choice to deep fry or soup-up the shrimp head), tamago, seaweed, a few other fishies, and a dollop of blue crab, spicy tuna, & something that tasted like dried/shredded beef jerky lololol(very interesting but good!). For my second entree I got the combo lunch w grilled miso Chilean sea bass on a bed of greens w a perfectly subtle dressing and blue crab hand roll for $29. The seabass was amazing, one of the better ones I ever had. Can't say enough about this place. Now I know why it was packed right @ opening. Yelp 100 Challenge 2018: 77/100 Located inside a small strip mall in Walnut, Ootoro is definitely the place to go if you are craving some good sushi! Walking into the restaurant, you can immediately tell that Ootoro, like any authentic Japanese restaurant, pays very close attention to the details and ensures that you have the perfect dining experience with not only the food but with the ambiance. My group of 4 got here at around 11:40AM on a Thursday, and we were immediately seated. From then till noon, a lot of people rolled in and the restaurant definitely got busy very quickly. We came early because we heard about their daily chirashi bowl, which includes a lot of fresh fish. There's no specific menu list on what will be included in the daily chirashi bowl since they pick out the freshest fish to put on the bowl! Compared to other items on their menu, the daily chirashi bowl is comparably cheaper, and worth every penny that you pay. My chirashi bowl came with at least 5 different types of sashimi, VERY thick cuts, and some shredded real crab meat. The wasabi that they used is grounded, unlike the paste style that you get at most, if not all Japanese restaurants. You can tell it's fresh because it's spicier than most! If you arrive too late and missed the daily chirashi bowl (since it only has limited quantity!), you can still order the regular chirashi bowl (for ~$17 as opposed to $15). There are also a wide variety of options on the menu that are also priced very differently. I am so glad I was introduced to Ootoro, and I hope to come back again soon! read more

I had been waiting ages to try Ootoro and finally had a chance to make it here with my coworker (thank you~). Came here for a lunch, eyes widened and stomach ready. My coworker had put the name on the list, but the wait wasn't that long. Actually, upon sitting, there were a couple unoccupied tables (it felt weird sitting in a table meant for 8 with only 2 people but hey more space!) I went for the chirashi but I think the salmon ikura looks so divine. The quality is great and the fish taste so fresh. Tuna, salmon, yellowtail. And they are thick slices too so that you're able to get amazing slabs of fish in yo mouth. They have a seaweed salad and a spicy tuna-feel mix on the bottom of the dish as well. Also miso soup :D. Me love the salmon. (: I also got an order of the halibut with uni, wasabi on top. It's the sweet-sour feel taste of the halibut that comes at you and then you get the taste of the uni and wasabi. The service was not on spot, they didn't really accommodate me when I asked about the Omakase which is practically the most expensive course there. I wanted a few guaranteed dish such as the toro but they couldn't guarantee. I feel like they didn't want to try and just wanted to stuff whatever they have left over for my course. So I didn't order the omakase. The food at that price seemed like it could be better. I don't know what changed but maybe the chef wasn't there or something. This is my favorite sashimi place now in Walnut. There are not a lot of places like this to begin with in suburbia. This place is better than sushi gen (jtown) and definitely without the ridiculous wait time. But my heart still saves a place for sushi gen, the first OG Chirashi lunch deal spot w the freshness of Japan and the price point of a broke college student. Good ole UCLA days. But, I digress. We came to Ootoro for lunch around 1pm and were seated within 20 minutes. We were third on the wait list. They still use paper pencil sign up. Not sure why they're not using Yelp reservations yet, I think that would be an efficient method. So yes, even on a Wednesday, it was a busy lunch spot. We started with Hirame Halibut sashimi (3.50) the special for the day. We ordered two of the popular sashimi lunch (19.95) which comes with usual appetizers (steamed tofu, pickled veggies, miso soup). My favorite was the toro because it was so fresh and melted in your mouth. Definitely worth it. Parking is easy and free but oddly shaped parking lot. This is not a place you want to speed through. Go slow. The interior of the restaurant has an evening LA sushi place vibe. Nice wood tones and partitioned booths for privacy. Its space is fancy, dimly lit interior design. I'm a regular here. Still the best Japanese restaurant. Unfortunately, Japanese food is pricey in America and the Omakase is around $285 per person. Affordable compared to those in Beverly Hills. Wished they had more variety for Omakase. Had it many times and they tend to be the same. For this price range, my other favorite is a little far from LA. It's in Rancho Cucamonga and it's called Ken's Sushi Restaurant. And go to N/NAKA if u can. Definitely better than Ootoro and slightly cheaper! read more
