The ambiance and staff were amazing. Love the look and location of the restaurant as well. I wanted to try their gyro as it's one of my go-to Greek dishes. First, they charge extra for the meat to be lamb, which I found very strange as 99.9% of my past experiences with gyros have been lamb-based. Next, the meat was soggy and shredded. Not traditional or enjoyable. The "salad" they put on the side is a salt bomb with zero lettuce. All for $27. They may have other food that's better but this was definitely one of the worst gyros I've ever had. Opa brings some incredible Greek food to Waterville. You'll want to make reservations here as it can fill up quickly. We've sat both upstairs and downstairs during our visits. The upstairs is somewhat louder with the downstairs being a quieter experience but both spots have great vibes and a great atmosphere. I highly recommend starting with one of their delicious cocktails. They have a very wide selection which should cater to anyone's tastes. Bread and olive oil is provided for the table, but you definitely need to get some pita and try some of the dips. I highly recommend the hummus and the spicy feta, but you can't go wrong with any of them. I appreciate that Opa's menu is clearly labeled with what is vegetarian and vegan. I've had the Melitzana twice now and both times it was incredible. The grilled eggplant pairs beautifully with the caramelized onions, roasted mushrooms and the delicious sauce. My wife really enjoyed the Greek Salad and the rest of our party loved their Gyro and Scallops. I wanted to love Opa so much I really did because Greek food is my favorite! We arrived at 12:39on a Friday afternoon and sat outside. It was a bit chilly outside but since I'm still protecting my two year old from Covid we decided it was best to sit out there. We ordered drinks. Twenty minutes later two Luke warm teas arrive and a chocolate milk. We order our food once the drinks arrive. Two salads-one greek & one Greek caprese, tzatziki dip with cucumber for dipping, French fries, spanakopita and falafel. Where we went wrong was not having it all come out at once. They do bring warm dip and olive oil upon arrival. My salad was literally drowning in salad dressing, I basically at the halloumi which was smoked nicely and that was it. My mom really enjoyed her Greek salad. The tzatziki was really garlicky for taste but it was thick and creamy. This took another 30-40 minutes to come out. It took so long for the remainder of the food arrive that we were not hungry anymore. The falafels were just okay. But $12-14 for three falafels and a small dish of hummus is highway robbery. My mom loved the spanakopita. The fries basically went into the trash because after waiting an hour and 15 minutes for food my little one was done. I won't return. For $84 dollars we had cold drinks ($3 for great value brand black tea) small portions, over fried food. The reason for the three stars is when we saw the waitress or any staff they were nice and polite and the outside seating area is nice. Unfortunately we arrived at 12:15 and didn't leave till 1:45, I had an appointment so I eventually had to mention this to get the ball rolling. I hope things improve for them. read more

Stopped in on a whim while in Waterville for a show. Wow! This place is fantastic! The service was spot on! We were seated downstairs. My only suggestion would be to pipe in some music. But the food... even better than the show we saw that night at the opera house! Started with delicious warm bread and warm olives... could have eaten 3 more baskets! We had the Greek salad, calamari, hummus plate and the spanakopita. Each dish was perfectly prepared, amazingly fresh, quality ingredients and delicious. Prices are reasonable given the quality. Our group of 7 was seated downstairs (basement) where it was much quieter than the packed street level. Friendly service, delicious complimentary bread and warm olives. Our drinks and appetizer platter of 3 (small) dips was delivered reasonably quickly. Eggplant dip was especially tasty, hummus and spicy feta were good but pricey for the size. We were recommended to buy an additional order of pita - we really did not need it. We waited a long time for our main courses. 3 Gyro platters had lukewarm meat and fries - one platter's cheese garnish on fries was missing. Meatballs were dense and served lukewarm. Our child's hamburger was good but was off regular menu, not available on the children's menu . Lamb shank dinner was very good but pricey at 45 dollars for a very basic preparation. Calamari was served warm with nice sweet and sour relish. After adding bar tab ( good martini, white wine and Prosecco were not as cold as we like) we paid quite a bit for a pretty basic meal which was served lukewarm to the majority of our party. *** Thank you for responding, Opa. My wife's roasted eggplant was really tasty, but my chicken skewers were slightly dry (although still tasting good). Where to start... I love Greek food and was very excited to find this place. I had wanted to go here for some time and finally had the occasion to go with my son. The place was very nice inside - inviting, comfortable, air conditioned, nice decor, casual, lively conversation going on. Greeted with great service and pleasant staff (the only real reason I'm not giving it one star). We were starving and both got lamb gyros. Came out pretty quickly. Pretty underwhelming to say the least. Good fries, but the gyro was completely tasteless. Honestly, it was about at the level of something I would make at home. (I'm hinting at how terrible a cook I am). It was very disappointing. For the price we paid for them one would hope that there would at least be some flavor to it. Got a beer with my meal, looking forward to it. Came out in a glass that was smaller than a pint. But at a pint price. Yeah, no. Major no-no. Ultimately, we paid a crazy tab for subpar food. I don't want to say how much , especially if you don't have the ambulance on speed dial. We could have paid half of what we paid and it still would have been disappointing. This was almost insulting. Do you love over cooked meat? We'll then this may be the spot for you. The most unfortunate part about restaurants like this is the location. The closest Greek restaurant has to be Portland. So people seem to think this spot has good food. I have now tried this spot 3 times and every time, without fail, the meat has been cooked to the point of dry and rubbery. The best service is clearly saved for the regulars. Which to be totally honest, it's really surprising they have regulars. As I said to the seating host "If it was legal in the state of Maine to marry a lamb shank, I would marry this one." But I'm getting ahead of myself. My friend and I arrived to find a packed restaurant. We were told a 30 minute wait (I don't think it was that long). There's not really a waiting area-- either by the door or by the bar, both kind of in the way-- but I'm not going to dock them for that. They can figure that out in time. The space is cute, and the staff was all very friendly. I hadn't been out in a while, so I splurged hardcore. I ordered the calamari, because it's a good litmus test of whether the kitchen knows what they're doing. What came out was a plate mounded with rings and tentacles, delicately battered and fried to perfection, topped with both a sweet chili Thai sauce and a lemon garlic aoli, which was to die for. There wasn't an overcooked piece in the lot, and it was a very generous appetizer for two people. And then, the lamb shank. Oh, the beautiful, soft, fall off the bone lamb shank. When I ordered the lamb shank, I was expecting a slice of shank, not the entire shank itself. This was cooked to absolute perfection. The meat was tender, flavorful, and excellent quality (lamb can sometimes have an unpleasant gaminess). I knew, at that moment, at that first bite, that this would probably be the only entree I ever ordered there again. Lamb is one of my favorites, and when I find a place that does it right, I cling to that dish forever. The lamb was served with a demiglace and mashed potatoes (which were... mashed potatoes, hard to mess up) as well as roasted root vegetables (carrots, potatoes, and I'm assuming parsnips). All was good, but the star really was that gorgeous hunk of meat. I even splurged on dessert, which I typically don't do. I love baklava, and it's so hard to get good baklava anywhere, so I was intrigued by the "deconstructed" baklava on the menu. Don't be alarmed by the word "deconstructed," because it's really not. Instead of a layered pastry cut in squares or diamonds, the phyllo and nuts were rolled. It was delicious--not the best baklava I've had, but by far not the worst-- and served with an excellent vanilla ice cream. I am so glad we now have a place like Opa! in Waterville. Central Maine, in general, really lacks Mediterranean restaurants, so when I heard about Opa! I knew I had to go. read more

Had a lovely outside experience here this week. The Moussaka was killer! My only disappointment was the limited salad choices. I had a hankering for what i know as a Greek salad ( greens, feta, cucumbers, olives et al....) the only salad with greens was infiltrated by a Greek cheese ( not feta) and drenched in dressing. The meatballs with a Tzatziki sort of dressing were delish... tender and filling. I was excited to see that they had tequila options on the menu, but probably should have known that a Greek restaurant wasn't the place to have a tequila drink. I ordered a spicy marg. There was absolutely no spice--maybe not even any tequila as I could only taste sour mix. My husband had the house red wine which was okay. We decided to order the trio of dips and falafel to start with plans to order more if we were still hungry. The falafel was terrible--I make better at home from mix. It's a Greek restaurant, therefore, falafel should be one of their stars and it was not. The dips (spicy feta, hummus and tzatziki) were all bland save the hummus. I have never been to a Greek restaurant where flavor and salt are needed. We basically stuffed ourselves with pita. Lastly, we had to flag down our server as we were more than ready to go. This wasn't just me. During our meal, a woman next to us had actually turned her entire body around waiting to find their server and finally got up and told them they were ready to go after being ignored for a good 10 minutes. read more

We have had lunch here twice, about a year apart, and it was still as good the second time. Besides being a lovely place and having charming waitstaff, everything is very fresh and nicely presented. The serving of meatballs is generous as is the gyro with fries and a little salad. It's really nice that before ordering, we were served fresh baguette slices with a variety of olives and olive oil for dipping. We ordered the eggplant dip that came with warm, soft pita. Spanakopita is 4 hot and crispy individual triangles set on top of tzaziki.
