The problem I've encountered from looking at private rescue organizations, is that they are frequently very selective about the potential adopters of the dogs that they're rescuing from often bad situations. I understand that they have a right to be so considering that they are covering a good deal of expenses like vaccinations, spaying/neutering, dental work, etc in preparing a dog for a new home. Not to mention that this work is done outside of their regular jobs. I thought I was aware of all these things when I visited Operation Greyhound. I thought I understood that the ball was largely in their court. But I also thought they knew that I didn't have to rescue a dog at all. I could have strolled into the pound or answered a Craigslist ad for puppies and walked away with a dog no questions asked. I thought they would have been eager to get me excited to help a dog in need. The treatment I actually received, upon hearing that I wasn't married or a homeowner was suspicion and a hearty serving of self-righteous lecturing about how I wasn't good enough to receive one of Operation Greyhound's dogs. While the majority of the volunteers at this place were courteous and helpful, the supposed founder who goes by the name Bruna was absolutely horrible. Both conversations I had with her gave me the strong impression that they were in no hurry to assist me, that I was an imposition on them to make them wait more than a day to hear from me, and that I was more or less a monster for considering more than one greyhound rescue organization at a time. I literally had never been more insulted in all my life by this woman telling me how she thinks the world works. You will be treated with great scepticism if you don't fit her exact specifications. She doesn't give a damn about the human aspect of adoption, just her dogs. Good luck and God speed if you consider working with this woman read more

I have been adopting greyhounds from Operation Greyhound for many years now. Every experience has been wonderful and the staff, especially Bruna and Bob, have been extremly helpful. Their expertise and knowledge of each dog has always been right on. This family oriented group is the best ever. Even after adopting they are always there for you to answer your question and to help with any needs or concerns you may have. Thank God they are selective and thorough in placing their greyhounds. A greyhound is unlike many other breeds and require a home that will allow a greyhound to fully retire and blossom. Operation Greyhound strives to make sure all their greyhounds find their loving forever home. The time, love and energy they put into their available greyhounds is exceptional. When our precious Champ passed away, Elvis was terribly sad and went into a funk. Bruna was so patient in helping us and Elvis find a new buddy and totally understood how Elvis was feeling and why. I have been fortunate to know Operation Greyhound for almost 10 years now, which is when we adopted our beloved Elle. We now have two greyhounds in our family (both saved by Operation Greyhound) and I am still amazed by what gentle, loving and friendly dogs these are, especially after what they have been through. Bruna and Bob have dedicated their lives and their home to the rescue of these beautiful creatures. I think they have been doing this now for over 20 years and are personally responsible for saving the lives of thousands of ex-racing greyhounds. If you are interested in adopting a rescued greyhound then this is a good place to go. But be forewarned that greyhounds are not suitable for all environments. They are actually very low maintenance as they like to sleep most of the day, but they do need to be walked daily or access to a secure yard - believe me, you don't want to try chasing down a loose greyhound! We went there to meet Tony and instantly fell in love and were able to take him home on the spot after a little paper work. We adopted our first greyhound from Operation Greyhound 11 years ago. We had never in our lives seen a greyhound up close, and I had never had a dog my entire life, and I was 45 at the time. We had a son with special needs and his doctor kept saying "get him a dog". I was NOT a dog person . I did a lot of research on breeds of dogs and decided to check out greyhounds because they were said to have great temperaments, they are calm quiet and affectionate (who knew) and clean. They don't shed much and don't have that dreaded "doggy smell". Since smelly barking dogs were what I was trying to avoid, we decided to go with the greyhound. We went out to Operation Greyhound and met Bob and Alberto. They had just received a new batch of dogs from the track. My 13 year old son met with several of the dogs and he really liked a little brindle girl named Addie. After being briefed by Bob on the do's and dont's of owning a greyhound, and the book "greyhounds for dummies" in our hands, we went home to consider the adoption. We returned a few days later and brought Addie home with us. She raced into our hearts immediately. She was such an easy addition to our family. She bonded with my son and did her job being his constant companion at home, especially at night when he was uneasy sleeping alone in his room. I could go on and on about everyone at Operation Greyhound and how wonderful and caring they are, and their beautiful dogs, but here we are 11 years later, sweet Addie passed away but we have 2 greyhounds taking her place. Another beautiful brindle called "Lilly", and a beautiful white girl who after 5 long years at the racetrack is enjoying her retirement as part of our family, and goes by the name "Bear". We have had several friends adopt greyhounds after meeting our dogs, and all our kids and nieces and nephews say when they get a dog, they will absolutely choose greyhounds. There is a gorgeous brindled greyhound currently a-snooze on my sofa and each time I look at him my heart swells with gratitude to the folks at Operation Greyhound who saved him from certain death and made his placement into my home possible. Not only did they rescue this dog as a puppy from the most dire of conditions, but the vet attention and foster care enabling him to eventually be adopted was exemplary and thorough. They went leagues beyond the extra mile. This rescue organization treats its adopters and adoptees as forever family and are more than eager to help when questions and problems arise. When you adopt from Operation Greyhound you join a community, and it is a community of like-minded folks without a personal agenda who want what's best for the dogs, as is evidenced by the large turnout of joyful greyhounds and their happy owners at the annual Operation Greyhound gathering or the ongoing adoption promotions they have in the community. The folks at Operation Greyhound truly care about the dogs that come into their care and finding the right homes for them. It would be hard to find such a selfless charitable organization or group who provides such incredible follow-up for both the dogs and their owners. I would not hesitate when the time is right to add another dog to my home in contacting Bob or Bruna as I know they will endeavor to find the best fit for all. After researching many greyhound rescues in my area I decided to visit the facility in El Cajon. I found a wonderfully sweet and loving greyhound on my first visit. I was told that she was in good health and that all of her tests came back normal & that there were no health issues. Upon returning 3 days later to pick up /adopt our hound I met Bruna, the co-founder. Right off the bat she acted with suspicion, which made no sense because I had previously met Bob (her husband) and Alberto (her brother) which are the most delightful ones of the bunch. I also had a home visit with a lovely volunteer family and their greyhound and it went well. Back to the reason I am writing this review: after dealing with Bruna over a serious and extremely stressful health issue with our dog (that was not disclosed to us until we were about to leave with the dog that captured our hearts) Bruna has been unbelievably nasty in regards to providing us with the remainder of the medication she said she'd mail us for our dog (she said that he needed to be on it for its illness). Upon leaving the" facility" I noticed that there was no mention/record of when our dog had last been treated for fleas/ticks. Bruna assured me that the dog had been, but could not give me a date and said "just put it on once a month". I explained to her that I needed to know the approximate date of the last application so that I would know when to reapply. Finally she went inside and said she'd check on the date and then came back out and said that the dog had never been treated since they got it back in the beginning of August. I don't know if they are overwhelmed because they are taking in a lot of hounds in need of a good home or what the situation is. Maybe I'm just unfamiliar with the whole greyhound adoption process. I don't want to judge anyone without knowing what it's like to walk in their shoes. I do wish that this experience had been like what I had read about in the positive reviews on Yelp-that being said I feel that we have the most loving and adorable greyhound in the world!! read more

These folks are the absolute salt of the earth! I adopted a total of (3) greys from them over the years, and am so thankful they are around. They are always available to offer advice on the dogs, as well as a great deal of help. I just called them last weekend about my dogs swollen foot; they are quick to help and they really care about the dogs. They sacrifice a great deal (majority) of their free time to rescue animals and make sure they live the rest of their lives in a healthy, happy place. Two days ago we adopted a beautiful girl. She is sweet and very sensitive. I have worked with animals for most of my life and was glad to see that they will not adopt out to anyone. I had seen her at Grossmont center at a mega pet adoption "party" and fell in love with her but realized she did have some special needs. I contacted our vet and when I understood what her needs entailed I realized they were minimal and contacted Bob. About 8 days later she became our princess. It hurts when I hear people say how rude Operation Greyhound was or how upset they were when they wouldn't give them a dog. This shows that Bob made a good choice because this person would not understand a retired greyhound. Just look at the other greyhound site that is nearby and see the dogs that have been returned due to bad or you might say unlucky placement. These dogs only know cages And need quiet and time and understanding and I feel Bob has a great sense of what each of his dogs need!!!! read more

There has got to be no more thankless job than rescuing, rehabilitating, and homing dogs that pass through on their way to future families. Bruna is one of those people who does that job tirelessly, with a passion and dedication that would put most of us to shame. She has created a beautiful facility that spends its time, energy and funding on dogs that have traditionally been slaughtered without a second thought once their racing careers were over. Greyhounds are magnificent and intelligent creatures (not to mention hilarious and loving) and they are not for everyone. I have volunteered at her facility and have several friends who have dogs from Operation Greyhound, and I really appreciate the way she runs her rescue organization. She understands so much about dogs, people, and the combination of the two, and is a master at placing and finding the best homes for her pups. I met the ever patient and understanding Bruna two and a half years ago after my beloved lab mix died. I adopted my lab mix as a puppy and knew that there would be differences adopting a dog that was three to four years old and that had never been inside a house. Bruna was so patient answering all of my questions. She was glad that I had a loving home to provide for my new "love". I do not have a yard and this was not a problem since my home provided security for the dog not to run off. My marital status was never mentioned. The main emphasis for Bruna was that I find the dog that was right for me. She thought there was one that was just right and indeed he is! We have been together for two and a half years. I remember Bruna asking me where I planned to have the dog sleep. I answered "in my bedroom". This was exactly the answer that Bruna was looking for. She devotes her life to helping the dogs find loving homes. I will always be grateful. read more

Over the past 10 years we have adopted 5 Greyhounds from Operation Greyhound. We recently adopted our 5th, which puts our current count at 3. We live in Eastvale and make the 2 hour drive because we know what to expect with them. Initially, they do ask a lot of questions and they do want to make sure that the home they are adopting their dogs out to is going to be a good fit. These guys put a lot of time and energy into rescuing the dogs and I would suspect the dogs probably spend a minimum of a month at Operation Greyhound once they have been rescued from the track before they are adopted out. You can tell right away that they are attached to these dogs. Aside from the time they put into it, you have to think also about what the dogs have been through before they were rescued. Bob, Bruna and crew try to not cause the dogs any additional trauma...they've already been through enough. They try to find the perfect fit the first time around instead of just hoping for the best and having people return the dogs, saying it wasn't a good fit, only for the dog to try another home. They will tell you if a dog has special needs or quirks about their personalities that may or may not fit into your lifestyle. They do a great job of assisting in the process of matching dog to owner. I say assisting, because it seems like you don't have a choice once you walk through those doors...the right dog will pick you. Or, if you have your own dogs, you can bring them in to meet the potential new family members and THEY will help make the choice. We took our 2 greys to meet the recently rescued 7 or 8 dogs, and our dogs picked Harry. (Actually, they also picked Jade, and we will probably be bringing her home soon as well) Our newest dog, Harry, is the youngest we have adopted. He's 21 months. All of our other dogs have been quiet, obedient, perfect pets....but they came to us around 5 yrs old each. Harry is like a rambunctious teenager. Bob told us about all of his quirks, and although it seemed like we were in for a whirlwind of crazy, Harry is adjusting quite well, as well as our other dogs. They also do Boarding. We have boarded with them. It's worth the trip because we know they are well cared for, we don't have to worry about our dogs bringing home kennel cough or anything else. It was a very difficult decision for us to leave Rambo, our first grey, behind for boarding the first time. It had been a year since he had been down to Op Greyhound. We got there, and it just so happened that the kennel we had found him in the first time, had an open door. He went straight in, hopped up into the kennel, lay down and looked at us as if to say "see you when you get back". I trust them. They have been good to us and they have rescued soooo many and placed sooooo many dogs over the years. Here's the deal. You pay an inexpensive adoption fee and you get a fully trained, well behaved, spayed or neutered with all their shots dog....AND you get the support of Operation Greyhound for years to come. This is a WONDERFUL organization, run and staffed by individuals who are to be admired for the dedication and love they bring to their rescue efforts. We feel truly blessed to have found Operation Greyhound and are grateful each day for the beautiful greyhound they rescued and allowed us to adopt. Bob and Bruna are remarkable people who have essentially dedicated their lives to saving greyhounds. And yes, they are selective about adopters, as is every greyhound rescue adoption group. Rescued greyhounds require certain types of homes and environments, and rescue organizations understand this and do their best to make sure the match between the dog and human will be a good one. Greyhounds suffer separation anxiety so it can be difficult if no one is home during the day. Although they can certainly live in an apartment, they really do need daily exercise and a fenced-in yard is ideal. They may or may not be able to adapt to other dogs, cats, or small children. They are highly intelligent dogs but they do require special care. I'm sorry the previous reviewer felt slighted by Operation Greyhound, but I can assure you that wasn't the intent. Bruna cares about saving greyhounds and giving them the best possible life. They've already suffered enough before their rescue and deserve to find the right kind of permanent home. Everyone isn't right for what are essentially "special needs" dogs. Operation Greyhound has successfully rescued and placed almost 3000 greyhound dogs -- lives that would otherwise have been lost. Bruna and Bob deserve our thanks and support for their work and dedication. Our beautiful 3-year old Neesha would likely not be alive today if it wasn't for them, and we will be forever grateful. read more

We adopted our 4th greyhound today from Operation Greyhound, a little girl named Paula. Bruna, Bob, Albert and all of the volunteers do an outstanding job of preparing the hounds for adoption. They take the rehoming very seriously. A greyhound is not your average dog...they are special and need to be understood. They simply are not just "regular" dogs. It is important that potential adopters be vetted and that the environment that they will be brought home to is safe for them. Operation Greyhound makes sure that this is the case. We adopted our first greyhound, Moe, about 11 years ago and he had a long and happy life. Monica came to us shortly afterwards...she is 13 now and still as regal as always. We brought Curly home in November 2013 after we had to say goodbye to Moe and he is a true joy. Playful, princely and affectionate, he is one of a kind. It is surprising how many people will return a greyhound because it was not a good fit but for us, our greyhounds make our lives complete. We have not had a bad experience....ever. And if we need advice, we know who to call. I highly recommend OG to anyone interested in having a retired racer change your life. read more
