We had a farewell dinner for a dear friend and colleague here. It was upscale dining in a formal but relaxed setting. The atmosphere is subdued with dim lighting, so bring a flash light. However, if you don't have one, they will shine one on the menu for you. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about the fare for the evening, as well as their abundant selection of wine on hand. They offer a variety of fare to choose, from seafood to steaks, venison, and duck. Everyone ordered a variety of main dishes. No one said much during the dinner, as they were too busy savoring their food and imbibing their choice of drink. The seafood was cooked as it should be, neither over nor under, just right! Steaks were succulent as were the sides. Appetizers were great, but beware, they cost as much as some of the main dish offeings! This place is great in terms of food, ambiance, and drink, however, it comes at a cost....$$$$$$! So be prepared to shell out. Proper attire will keep you from getting side glances, as this place is quite fancy. I'm a carnivore! I've dined in steakhouses in NYC, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas and Denver. Opus 9 can compete with any of them. The menu has something for everyone. The wine list is not 1,000 bottles deep and it doesn't have to be. Opus 9 has a knowledgable staff that can provide you with the vino you need to correctly compliment your meal. I was disappointed. Our server, Michael was very pleasant. The service was very slow. It took 15 minutes to order our drinks. The rolls took another 15 minutes. The entrees were not worth the money. I had a 6 0z fillet, medium rare but it was dry and tasted funny. The sauteed veggies and potatoes were good but the lunch was not worth $32. Michael was apologetic, but they must have been short staffed. The place was packed at 1:30 pm and when we left at 2:45, there was only one person left in the restaurant. Weird. Opus 9 A group of us met for a lunch meeting on 4/22. This restaurant was recommended by the members who reside in the Williamsburg (although only the Richmond members attended) I must say this restaurant did not disappoint. The restaurant is elegant. I was greeted and seated immediately as the first to arrive. They had is in a sort of a private meeting room which was closed off to the main dining room which was perfect. I ordered the crab cake sandwich with a side of fruit and a side Caesar salad. The serving sizes were nice and I had to get the crab cake sandwich to go. Everything was delicious. My friends had the seafood bisque, crab cake sandwich with potato salad and one had the puffed pot pie . The butter for the warm yeast roll was pulled out of a bag. Yummy. I was thinking buttercream frosting and our server Ashley got a good chuckle from that comment. Speaking of Ashley. She did a great job even though 3 of our party did not attend. Overall, a very enjoyable dining experience and, for a steakhouse, the most important part - the steaks - we done exceptionally well. We had 2 filets and 2 strip steaks and each was well prepared and delicious. The steaks were right on the edge of being over-salted which could be an issue for some, but were perfect to my palate. The sides did have some inconsistency as one of the baked potatoes was a bit underdone. Appetizers (calamari and salads) were all good, but not exceptional. And we enjoyed our desserts: crème brûlée and cheesecakes. Service is very attentive without being overbearing/hovering. I will suggest management up their game on wine service as our white wine was served cellar temp and our red served room temp vs. chilled and cellar temp, respectively. Also, the white was left on the table vs. being placed in an ice bucket. Not having the wines served at the right temp didn't ruin our meal or make it less enjoyable, but was an inconsistency given how well the rest of the service went. I can't compare it to other steakhouses in Williamsburg, but will recommend it for a good steak or special occasion dinner. read more

I wanna get this out of the way the only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because my blue rare steak was served on a plate that was extremely hot so it continued to cook to medium before I could finish eating. The service was some of the best I've ever had in a restaurant! My wife and I went for a date night while my parents were in town and could babysit for us. We started with a beer and glass of wine. The bread was dropped with water and let me tell you it was great! We started our meal with the crab cakes and they were delicious! The red pepper remoulade was absolutely amazing! My wife had the seafood trio for an entree and I had the filet. My cut was extremely nice I just wish the plate would've been room temperature so as to not continue cooking my steak. My wife's seafood trio with scallops, shrimp, and a crab cake were all fantastic! We will certainly be back! read more

Went there last night with a group of 15. I would have given it 5 stars but it was a little overpriced for what we had. I thin $48 for a boneless ribeye of the quality they served was about $20 too much. The wine was fantastic as was the app, corn and spinach. They were very courteous and maybe a little too helpful. The waiter pulled out a mag light to show me the meat was cooked medium rare. It really wasn't that dark in the room and a light was not really necessary. The other problem was the flashlight looked pretty banged up and used. For the prices they charge and the tip the young man received- please buy a nice light. Had a very good experience with this restaurant until the end! If you have vouchers from Holiday club make sure you show them first before you order! Our server George was wonderful and the food was very good. We both had the surf n turf, mine with crab cake and hers with scallops. All very good, the steak had a nice flavor and didnt need steak sauce or anything to help it and the crab cake was very very good and no filler!! Barbecue shrimp for an appetizer was just awesome! The dessert was just average. All in all it was a very nice experience. The situation with the vouchers gave you 4 stars, because it was not posted anywhere or asked so we know how to use them. Pros: Excellent steaks, great atmosphere, huge wine list, knowledgeable and friendly service Cons: Price, dessert So I noticed Williamsburg has an abundance of steak houses, so my wife and I made a point to pick one steakhouse each trip we take there. Opus 9 came highly recommended throughout Williamsburg. We spoke with several hotel concierges, vacation spots, and tourist centers. Most times it came up as the arguably the top steakhouse in Williamsburg, however pricey usually followed the description. Regardless, we couldn't turn down such a highly recommended location. My wife and I called at 6:00pm on Saturday to check wait times and if they took reservations. The hostess over the phone stated that they are booked until 8:30pm and do take reservations. I strongly recommend calling ahead on the weekend. Parking doesn't seem to be a major issue even during peak times. The outside is welcoming but not indicating what is on the inside. As you walk through the doors, the dim lighting and hostess set the atmosphere and are a great welcome. We noticed we were slightly under dressed, most gentlemen were wearing button up shirts and slacks or nice pants, women wearing skirts/dresses or equally as nice as the men. We were told from a few locals that it was still casual place and not too dressy, I don't recommend jeans and a t-shirt though. We were sat at our table in a large room, the area was nicely lit and had great décor. I believe this would be a elegant and classy place for a date or special occasion. We were met by Micheal our server, a very respectful individual who made our experience. He has been in the restaurant business 15 years, I strongly recommend asking to be sat in his area as he is very quick to meet your needs and has great recommendations. He started us out with the restaurants hand made honey butter and bread which is by far an excellent way to start the experience and great treat while looking over the extensive wine list and drink menu. The wine choices are amazing, but you have to be careful, you can spend $10 for a glass of wine or you could spend $300+ for a bottle. You could pay $20 dollars for a glass of scotch or $125. We decided to stick with wine during our visit but were recommended many of the martinis and cocktails. We decided to go with Micheal's recommendation for an appetizer after he explained that the crab cakes were Williamsburg award winning 5 years running. I will have to say that they delicious, and definitely worth the try. Micheal recommended quite a few steaks. My wife went with the cowboy cut and I went with the Filet Mignon. I also was given the choice for a soup or salad which I opted for the soup and the recommended French onion. I will say the soup was great, had a great flavor, again strongly recommend. Regarding the service, Micheal made sure that our needs were met and checked in enough to make sure when our wine glasses low if we wanted more but not enough to be pushy or annoying. The time between food was perfect, we weren't waiting on anything but weren't rushing to finish our crab cakes as our food came out. We felt very relaxed and enjoyed every moment. As the main course arrived, the plate sizzled as the steaks come in a plate with a thin layer of butter. Both steaks smelled delicious and looked equally as good. Although the sides were also recommendations they were only a separate place holder on the table compared to the steaks and didn't stand out in comparison. I ordered my steak medium rare, although as I cut into my steak I noticed it was about medium and not as pink as I had hoped. Although I blame myself as I didn't take into account it cooking slightly after being taken off the grill. Regardless, the steak was tender as expected. The outside was a delicious and seasoned with the fire in which in came, the inside was tender and still juicy regardless of being slightly cooked beyond my expectations, and every bite almost melted in my mouth. I use a previous statement of, I cut my steak into the smallest pieces so I could enjoy every bite and moment. We also decided to do dessert regardless of being extremely full. We decided to share a slice of cheesecake and end the night sharing a 20 year Port. I'm a HUGE cheesecake fan and sadly I will have to say this was my biggest disappointment. The cheesecake was small, didn't stick out or really shout exciting. The cheesecake also had a zest to it, a lemon flavor. The great finish was Port, however don't expect a glass but a sip of Port (which is standard for most restaurants). I strongly recommend this restaurant! Regardless of the price, which between my wife and I, we spent $210 (including tip) for an appetizer, four glasses of wine, soup, two steaks, cheesecake, and a glass of port. Although the price may be a factor, the quality is exceptional along with beyond our expectation service. A must try for anyone in Williamsburg. read more

The food was pretty good but the service was not. The waiter pretty much ruined this place for us. He tried to push expensive wine and then seemed to look down on us for not ordering it. I just wanted a nice craft beer to go with my steak but was sorely disappointed in their selection. I popped into Opus 9 on my way back from... somewhere, training maybe? I don't recall. Anyway, the gal at the Outlet mall, when asked what her favorite eatery was nearby, she said, "Omigosh, Opus 9". So, off I went. As a typical solo diner you never know what you're going to get when you walk into a posh establishment, but the cheery maitre de asked if the bar would be okay, and it was! Service was a *little* spotty (I was the only one at the bar), but I can't really ding them a star for it (although it's definitely a half-star). The waiter knew the menu though, and was gracious enough to not snicker when I murdered the phrase Au Poivre. It would be so much easier if they just called it a "Black Pepper Steak"... French people *eye roll* Anyway, the most interesting thing about this meal, that I've not seen in any steakhouse, and I've been to my share, is they ask you to cut your steak before they leave the table, to ensure the temprature is spot on. This little detail has cost many a steak house reviews of mine to lose a star. Overall, I felt it was a great meal and experience, I'd go back for sure. read more

I took my son to Opus 9 because he made good grades. We were also celebrating my birthday. My son and I ordered filets. We both ordered them medium rare. Mine came bloody---my son's came rare. Needless to say, we sent them back. When they came back, the grease splattering on the plate sprayed all over my $70 dress shirt. To make it worse, the filets were overcooked and dry. Opus 9 is overrated. The steaks at Texas Roadhouse are far better...and for half the price. I guess you can say we were quite disappointed in paying $100 for overcooked filets--I would think the cooks would be "spot-on" when charging this much for a steak. I also didn't appreciate my shirt being ruined Will have a hard time going back...will stick with Texas Roadhouse and Longhorns where they know how to cook a steak. read more

We came to Opus 9 tonight to celebrate my mom's birthday. The appetizers we pretty good. My sister has the calamari and I had the ahi tuna which were both delicious. The problem came with our main courses. After ordering it took almost an hour for the dishes to arrive. I ordered the Strip Au Poivre which came out ice cold inside and out, my sister had the Australian Lamb chops which also came out undercooked and the lobster my mother ordered was tough and had little taste. When the manager brought the food back out for my sister, I asked to have them make me a new piece of steak. The manager had the nerve to huff at me as he took my plate. Never have I been treated so rudely by a restaurant manager. We will not ever return to this establishment. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for being busy, but the manager's attitude was unacceptable. read more

We had never heard of Opus 9 but got a gift cert from friends to eat there. The most notable thing is honestly how expensive it is compared to any local alternative. I have been to my share of high-end steakhouse/restaurants like this across the country (Ruth's Chris etc) and unfortunately I was rather unimpressed, especially given the premium pricing. Average 2 person dinner there with an appetizer and a drink or two is going to run between $150 to 200. The atmosphere was overly dark for how bright it was outside, so we felt like we were sitting in a cave. Cheap battery candles in place of the real thing offered no help for the lighting situation. I had a filet that despite being ordered as "medium" came out as rare, after waiting 45 minutes despite the place being less than 1/4 full. There was truthfully nothing that special about the filet, either so I was pretty disappointed that it costed over $50. After dinner my wife and I both agreed that we'd actually had better food at Logan's across town. All that being said, if you're just seeking the "upscale" look/feel, or somewhere to dress up then you're good to go. It's probably good for business or special occasions - I just can't recommend that you go for the food itself, if that's what you're looking for specifically. read more

It was the full steakhouse experience and more. Food, decor and service rivaled any other place I have been to. From the greeting in to the greeting back out it was a perfect experience. We were looking for a nice dinner while traveling through historic Jamestown/Williamsburg area. At first glance, we thought it a bit odd that such a fancy restaurant would be in the middle of a mini-mall.. But we forged on the try this experience, per our pending reservations. Upon entering, Opus does have a nice ambiance. We were seated in 1 of 2 warm/cozy rooms that included dim lighting, decorative pieces, and a fireplace. I would like to think that these more intimate rooms are for reservations only, as the rest of the restaurant seemed very average. Once seated in our elegant 'living room' type dining area, we experienced good service and delicious food! I chose to have the wahoo fish special, while my BF enjoyed the seafood sampler. We went on a Monday, and all wine bottles were 1/2 price! Pretty amazing. The food was some of the best I have had in a long time, and it will be memorable. Only disappointing part was the key lime pie dessert, which was bland and not tangy at all. The staff was kind and courteous, and I would highly recommend Opus as a nice dining experience if looking for a romantic/intimate dinner for 2! Came in for birthday lunch with family. Ordered salad with grilled chicken, feta and walnuts. Salad was wilted and didn't taste fresh. Grilled chicken was tough, bland; they forgot the walnuts and cheese on the salad. Sent the salad back for a quiche with fresh fruit and greens. Quiche had no taste. There was a fly buzzing around our table the entire meal. Ordered two deserts which delicious. The date we dined was July 5. I attributed bland, less than fresh food to, perhaps, a lack of staff in the kitchen following a holiday. This was my 3rd time dining at Opus. No problem with the other two visits. As someone from DC who is used to spending $25-$90 per person on buffet brunch menus I went into this "$$$" Resturant with an open mind. Food: AMAZING. The omelette station was great and manned by very friendly staff. The eggs Benedict was great! The bacon was tasty!! The fresh fruit selection was a great quality. Their dessert/pastry portion of the brunch was plentiful. There were many cakes, eclairs, and chocolate fondue to choose from! Price: AWESOME. My brunch + bottled water was $40 for one person, that's a steal. However, if you're a drinker than I'd skip their $5 mimosa, bloody Mary, screwdriver menu and opt for their speciality cocktails at $13 a piece. The brunch $5 menu drinks are (no surprise) the lowest quality of liquors you can find. #JustSayNo to hangovers! They have an excellent cocktail menu and full bar. Service: MEH. Any Resturant with white table cloths, linen napkins, and servers with white lapelled jackets sets a certain expectation level of their service. At my brunch I filled my water myself from my bottled water, I fetched my own brunch plate here several times (despite my silverware being laid across my plate to indicate I was done), I never came back to my table to a refolded napkin, and I was left with an unsatisfactory bar drink for way too long. I waited a very long time to see if my waitress would notice that she never brought a clean plate but she never did. I found plates 3 seperate times! My waitress also didn't notice that I didn't touch my drink. I wanted her to give me an opportunity to ask for the drink menu and get a subsequent drink- but that never happened. My waitress chased me down after my third time getting my own plate to ask if she should remove my plate ------------- ?? My silverware was placed in a way across my plate that universally (or so I thought) indicated that the plate is no longer being used. Staff: The manager skipped my table on her first go around - maybe she was waiting to see if I was really dining alone - but she returned several times to check on my meal and nearby patrons. When I sent back my $5 brunch screwdriver (I didn't like the Vodka they use) she followed up with me immediately. My waitress was NOT HELPFUL. she was nice but no where to be found. I fetched my own brunch plates because in this Resturant unless your waitress is doting on you- you'll never get a clean one! The dining space is arranged to give diners a bit of privacy with an intimate ambiance. The staff is very professional and helpful with candid recommendations. I had the cowboy cut ribeye, which comes with the bone for enhanced flavor. The meat was cooked just right for me, was excellent quality, and tasted delicious. Additionally, I had a house salad to start and a berry dessert to finish; both were great. The dressing for the salad made the dish. After receiving our food, I tasted hers and I must admit, I was a bit jealous. My steak was good but her Filet Mignon was fantastic. Sides were the garlic mashers and also an order of creamed spinach. Both of which were great as well. We were stuffed by the end of our date and were provided a small bottle of champagne to share for our anniversary which was a welcomed gift. We almost went back the next night because we wanted to try different things on the menu. We ended up somewhere else due to scheduling, unfortunately. On a recent visit to Williamsburg I took one of my hosts out to lunch at Opus 9. The decor is very elegant and the service is near perfect. The wait staff is very friendly and engaging and is also quite helpful when deciding what to order. Bread is quickly brought to the table accompanied by butter squeezed from a pastry bag. Nice touch! My dining companion and started off with a couple of (regular) Bloody Marys and an order of calamari frita to split. Very generous portion of calamari although a little over battered in my opinion. My host ordered the Prime Rib sandwich and I ordered the Salad Niçoise. Everything I tasted was very good to excellent. If I had one complaint it would be that when served a Salad Niçoise, the restaurant actually uses the correct olives for the salad - the Niçoise Cailletier olives and not the standard green olives that were also used for the Bloody Mary. I realize this sounds a bit petty, but when one is claiming their restaurant is, 'premier' and is offering high end food and at upper level prices, cutting corners on olives for a salad type that actually has a particular olive with same name, you've got to wonder what they were thinking.
